The U.S. will surpass Saudi Arabia and Russia to become the world's largest oil producer by 2017 and become "all but (energy) self-sufficient" by 2030, the IEA predicts in its annual World Energy Outlook. The forecast highlights how the U.S. shale revolution is changing the energy sector, although analysts warn that the nature of shale production means that the growth the IEA predicts isn't guaranteed.

As expected, with a comfortable majority, Greece passes its 2013 austerity budget. German finmin Schaeuble maintains there's no rush on signing off on the newest €31B tranche of aid, though.
Timothy Geithner will stay on as Treasury Secretary until at least Pres. Obama's inauguration on Jan. 21, White House press secretary Jay Carney said on Friday, adding that Geithner is a "key participant" in the talks to avert the fiscal cliff. Geithner has already said he doesn't plan to stay on for a second Obama term; his possible successors include White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew.

Facebook FB is rallying ahead of today's Q3 report - short-covering is likely a big factor (16.5% of the float was shorted as of Sep. 28). The bull argument: shares are down 48% from the IPO and 27% since the Q2 report; monthly users just topped 1B; and Facebook is pulling out all the stops to improve monetization, with some success. The bear argument: U.S. PC activity is plunging thanks to the mobile shift, shares still carry lofty forward P/Es, and buyers could be cautious ahead of a huge Nov. 14 lockup expiration.
Ahead of Apple's AAPL 1PM ET event, almost certain to center around an iPad Mini launch, 9to5 Mac leaks the specs for 13" retina MacBook Pro models (previous) that it claims will also be unveiled. Meanwhile, BGR has posted images a of a new regular iPad that could be either for a 4th-gen model, or (more likely) an updated 3rd-gen model. The pictures show an improved front camera, and an optically bonded display that reduces glare.
