MusclePharm signs two year pact with the UFC
September 19, 2011
MusclePharm announced that it will be the official nutritional supplement company of the UFC. The partnership will give Musclepharm space in the Octagon, on the UFC website and its Twitter and Facebook pages.
Via MusclePharm press release:
With the partnership, MusclePharm will now have exclusive in-ring placement, including its trademark MP logo on the Octagon mat and bumpers up to 10 times per year during UFC live events, which are viewed by millions of fans worldwide. The map and bumper placement will be in place for the UFC’s ground breaking network television debut on FOX that takes place on Nov. 11. MusclePharm’s strong presence will be evident on that night, as the UFC makes its network debut with a heavyweight championship fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos that will be seen by tens of millions of fans across the United States and will be one of the most-viewed matchups in UFC history.
In addition, the partnership includes strong digital media activation and will include an exclusive MusclePharm nutritional section on the www.UFC.com homepage, which draws millions of visitors each month. The activation will also allow MusclePharm access and visibility on the UFC’s Facebook and Twitter pages, which are considered some of the most popular in the social media world and include more than seven million fans.
Payout Perspective:
Its a turnaround from where the company was last year as it settled outstanding debt from its WEC sponsorship obligations. With working capital to fund new marketing efforts it decided to make a splash. Earlier this year, it signed NFL star Michael Vick to a lucrative sponsorship deal although it turned into a bit of an issue. The latest move to maintain its sponsorship ties with the UFC is smart considering the UFC’s big move to Fox. The partnership and media activation should aid the company’s presence. Time will tell to see if this new marketing strategy will pay off.

For Sure! I think this is going to be an incredible Event with lots of surprises. Just look at the last one and I do believe they will have a TV Deal in place for it which will just add to the momentum, excitement and impact.
Tim Sylvia as a previous 5x UFC Champion would be another nice addition and if they did do the fight between he and Andrei Arlovski I personally think that would be great fight that would draw the public's attention! Also add in Kendal Grove, Reagan Penn, Mark Ellis as well as others and this event will have the potential of absolutely huge draw power.
In reality we have not heard NJ confirmed although I think it will be there! I have heard the Date which is again yet to fully confirmed though have heard it will be Nov 5 / 2011!
Tim is Twittering this and who else at this time would hold an Event in Hawaii and could draw Tim Sylvia. I think Hawaii is just being thrown out there as a possibility until there is a confirmation on the location.
The third piece is that Tim Sylvia & Andrei Arlovski have long standing very very bitter rivalry that stems from a major battle over the UFC Heavyweight Title among some other things! This Fight if this is the plan would be the continuance of one the top Epic Battles in MMA History and make it an incredible Draw along with other solid fights!

Strikeforce: Barnett Vs Kharitonov A TV Ratings Disaster For Showtime
Sep 13, 2011
The TV ratings are now in for Saturday night’s Strikeforce: Barnett Vs Kharitonov event on Showtime, and to be quite frank they can only be described as a complete disaster for all concerned.
An average of just 274,000 viewers tuned in to see the semi-finals of the promotion’s flagship event, the heavyweight grand-prix. That ranks as the second worst ratings ever for a major event during the strikeforce – Showtime era and is more comparable with the Strikeforce Challengers series which is aimed at promoting up and coming talent.
By way of contrast the previous two GP events had posted record ratings with Fedor vs Silva drawing 741,000 viewers while Overeem Vs Werdum did 624,000.
Despite those impressive numbers it was actually rumored that Zuffa were disappointed that the latter event starring Alistair Overeem didn’t do better given the stacked card they put on, so it boggles the mind to contemplate what they must be thinking about the Ohio show, especially given that the wage bill came in at a hefty $942,000.
Today’s figures come following further bad news emerging from the event at the weekend which indicated that there were as little as 1500 – 2000 people in attendance in Ohio to watch the show live. In abreak from tradition Strikeforce have so far failed to report the official attendance.
While the main event between Josh Barnett and Sergei Kharitonov wasn’t the most glamorous match-up that the tournament could have provided the overall fight card did have plenty of strength and depth, including a middleweight title fight as Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza attempted unsuccesfully to defend his belt, plus former light-heavyweight champions Muhammed ‘King Mo’ Lawal and Rafael ‘feijao’ Cavalcante amongst a number of other significant stars.
We’ve already covered in a separate article after the event the major reasons for the show having proven to be a flop, but to quickly recap, a lack of interest in the latter stages of the tournament due to the early exit of the biggest stars, a general feeling that Strikeforce is now fading fast as the UFC cherry picks it’s top talent, and major breaking news over the past few weeks in the UFC overshadowing the promotion in the build-up to the event are amongst the biggest problems they’ve faced.
Sadly, as Strikeforce star ‘King Mo’ said himself at the post-fight press conference which was eerily quiet due to the lack of media in attendance, it appears as if the promotion is now on life support and is waiting for someone to flick a switch and put an end to it’s misery.

You said it yourself "no one has a true answer"! And no one here does so this appears to be the wrong place to ask.
Nobody cares if you want to post something relative to the DTCC but please make it useful and meaningful as none of us have control over the issue. Everybody is encouraged to talk about the Stock and the company.
If you want answers relative to the DTCC call the DTCC and your Broker as they both best positioned to answer questions to create movement or change on the situation and the company may be able to provide some information. I have done the same myself along with many here and have chosen to deal with some Brokerages over others for that reasons and others where I feel I can and will get the best service to deal with my needs and all have the option to do so.
As has been stated a number of times this is an independent regulatory issue with the DTCC who are able exert control regarding trading of some stocks at their own discretion and this only affects some Brokers and some stocks and Pro happens to be included relative something to something that happened many years ago, done by a specific Hedge Fund and individuals associated with that fund and all of these un-associated the actual company past and of course present.
This is also the case for hundreds of other stocks who happen to be under this lock for this and other reasons and tens of thousands others who have been under it in the past past.
The issue with the DTCC Lock has nothing to do with the current company or trading of it's stock hence why it is able to trade with some Brokerages and it is understood the company is operational.
My understanding is the company is aware of the issue and looking help in this regard but is also working a number of other things that would position the stock in the long term better as well as a side note probably help position the stock to be removed out from underneath the Lock with the remaining Brokerages.
Putting this into base facts, the board is here to talk about the Company and it's stock. The company is fully operational and the stock is trading! The company has done some big things already and its planning bigger things in the very very near future which should play well for the stock and all investors.
Individual issues and the issues some Brokerages should be and is with the DTCC. I personally would suggest dealing with them to get anything done and feel free to call the company as we all have that right and again they are best positioned to answer those question that they can. I personally along with many would also like to see it trading with everybody and also help it will be soon. We do have to assume if it was a quick easy thing, it would have already been done as the company and other Shareholders have nothing to gain by it not trading with everyone and this includes the other shareholders including Corporate ones like Stratus, CBS/ShowTime, etc as well as the current executive with the company itself and Stratus.
All are welcomed and encouraged to post information regarding the Company, the Stock and anything that is new information regarding the DTCC Lock would be appreciated as I have seen others do and would expect most would want to do.
We can all but to beat it death but that does not seem to make sense nor does not appear to help or change the situation. This also could be seen very easily as bashing and come at the expense of others who can trade or are quite comfortable waiting for higher market value as the company continues its plan of progression and growth.
We do not at all encourage bashing, off topic or any other things that might be considered a violation of the TOU of the board.
Just my thoughts.
No problem. I thought it was a great article as well and have been following the issue closely for the impact aside from the sheer curiosity.
It will be very interesting to watch this develop. I believe this is huge for the Industry aside from the fact his will place huge Financial and Political pressure on the UFC like nothing it has ever seen before and that process has already begun but as they say I don't think the none of us have seen anything yet and the best is yet come.
There are few to none who do battle with the US Government and walk away unscathed much less when a Union takes issue with you, your business or your business practices. Having either of them with you in their sights is not good thing much less both.
I think in any case this will place a huge financial burden on UFC like nothing it has ever seen and again mounting public pressure that the Unions will continue to play out in public arena, the media and in their operations at the back end and all who support them which are many.
I really believe this will be hard for the US Government and it's Courts to ignore and this itself will play well for those who compete in any way with Zuffa/UFC and it's holdings. And you can bet that any other and/or additional anti-Competitive behavior by the Zuffa/UFC will come under huge scrutiny.
This is in my opinion is going to blow the market wide open and/or force Zuffa to play much much nicer giving competing organization a much bigger and better chance. The closer the size and type operation the bigger and better chance it will offer with the biggest and best organization being biggest benefactors to complete for organizational depth and market share and therefore the dollars associated with that market share.
I think ProElite will be very very strongly positioned to benefit from the process and most all the impact and the outcome!

The FTC investigation of Zuffa/UFC: The plot thickens like a good reduction
by Mike Olenski on September 01, 2011
The largest hurdle in the expansion of the UFC has been New York State. For years now Dana White, Lorenzo Fertitta, and many others involved have been petitioning for New York to get on board with the growing sport of Mixed Martial Arts.
Despite the massive revenue for the state, and the Unified Rules keeping a check on the brutality, the bill to legalize MMA has been shot down year after year. White has placed the blame on corruption and politics, saying it has nothing to do with the safety of the sport.
"It has nothing to do with Mixed Martial Arts. Of all things it is the Culinary Union that's keeping us out of New York," White said in a radio interview with Boomer and Craig on WFAN. "They're powerful guys here."
You may ask why a culinary union would want to stop MMA from taking place in New York. Well, funny you ask that. The Culinary Union isn't opposed to MMA at all, they are opposed to Zuffa. Zuffa is owned by the Fertitta brothers, the same men who own Station Casinos in Las Vegas. Station Casinos is one of the largest non-union Casinos in the country, and as you would expect, the Culinary Union is not too fond of them.
In the last week or so, rumors of the Federal Trade Commission investigating Zuffa on anti-trust issues have been swirling. It has been confirmed that Zuffa has retained the services of one of the best anti-trust law firms in the country.
The reports coming in are that the buy out of StrikeForce raised flags with the FTC in the realm of collusion. It can be viewed that the largest MMA organization (UFC) merging with the second largest MMA organization (StrikeForce) is putting a strangle hold, or rather a rear-naked choke, on the MMA world.
Now the Culinary Union is throwing their weight around this topic, issuing a letter to the FTC in support of an investigation of the business practices of Zuffa. FiveKnuckles.com gained access to parts of this letter, and here are some excerpts:
Key Complaints:
a) "Automatic renewal" contract provisions such as the "champion's clause," which extends the contract of an athlete who becomes a champion. Such clauses effectively prevent some athletes who sign contracts with Zuffa from becoming free agents and negotiating for higher pay.
b) Exclusive negotiation and "right to match" clauses that lock athletes into negotiating with Zuffa for a period after their contracts have expired. These clauses diminish the ability and incentive of smaller promotions to bid for top mixed martial arts athletes.
c) Merchandise and ancillary rights agreements that require athletes to forfeit their image and likeness rights "in perpetuity," or forever. These far-reaching agreements deprive athletes of the freedom to make money from their own success and further bind them to Zuffa indefinitely.
They expand a little:
These contractual restraints can have the effect of forcing some athletes under contract with the UFC to negotiate with one buyer, depriving them of any real barganing power and depressing pay below competitive levels. The Mixed Martial Arts Fighters Association estimates that professional mixed martial arts athletes received just 5.7 percent of total gate and pay-per-view revenues at five UFC events in 2009 while athletes who compete in other pro sports organiations receive 50 percent or more of revenues.
More on how they feel Zuffa blocks competition:
Professional sports leagues have sought to justify restraints on athlete mobility by arguing that such restraints are necessary to maintain a competitive balance among teams, and thereby maintain spectator interest. In some cases, courts have agreed. In American Needle v. the National Football League, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that competitive balance is "unquestionably an interest that may well justify a variety of collective decisions made by the teams."
However, Zuffa does not operate as a professional league, and thus cannot justify its restrictive behavior as being necessary to preserve a competitive balance in mixed martial arts. Zuffa is a private limited liability partnership that promotes and produces professional mixed martial arts events for the benefit of its owners. The anticompetitive restrictions it imposes on athlete mobility serve no legitimate business justification beyond stifling competition and increasing Zuffa's already dominant position in the market.

Me Too! LOL! Got to hope people want to give their Shares away! Especially if you want to buy.
Agreed for sure but you can bet the WWE is going to put some averting muscle behind it to be a big tier 2 specialty Channel/Network and that looks very similar to what the UFC was planning with G4.
It will be interesting to see how Vince plays this as I see it and I think he believes this meant to be a huge offensive maneuver for them in maintaining and/or developing market buy and interest whether he wants to actually say he is competing directly or indirectly with the "Sports" offerings specifically the combat sports demographic as an entertainment offering or not and to some degree they all are Entertainment no matter what your want to classify them as.
Go ProElite!
Very Interesting and a big move by the WWE. It's gonna put pressure on everybody looking to capture some of huge market of Sports and Entertainment Broadcasting. Our day is coming! IMO.
Go ProElite!
CBS is the natural and best option although there are definitely others who could also bring huge value to their own TV Network Stations. For ProElite the absolute best fit is CBS/ShowTime as Shareholders in ProElite they already they have vested Interest in it's success and could gain on two fronts with that interest alone.
Things are interesting with the word being Bellator is jumping to SpikeTV and the upcoming Prelimins already booked to be streamed for the upcoming Bellator Event on the Spike Web Site indications appear to be very clear where Bellator is headed.
So what happens to MTV who is also a Viacom Company who also own CBS and ShowTime. Hmmm! I could see Viacom getting started with ProElite on MTV and then expanding it to CBS and Showtime for the bigger Bang and Bucks once the Strikeforce Contract is completely done with, which should not be long now.
NBC have had a great interest for some time with previously Broadcasts of Strikeforce( Who are now under UFC Ownership and headed to Fox ) so they could be very very interested in ProElite with the concerns of the UFC on Fox.
NBC were also thought to be the ones responsible when and if it airs the New Series "Ultimate Women Challenge" MMA reality show which seems to have stalled out for the time being but maybe with ProElite in the mix things could well change very quickly and put NBC back in as a contender.
NBC under the ownership of Comcast and their minority partner in GE( General Electric ) they also own MSNBC, CNBC, and the USA Network which they might have an interest again in getting things started there only to make a major later push on NBC or one of it's other affiliates stations under NBC Universal.
NBC may also be a little bothered by the UFC and a failure of either a partnership or outright sale of G4 to the UFC so may have an another interest in getting ProElite on there with a solid similar demographic to MTV which seems well suited for solid MMA content and specifically ProElite at this time.
CBS along with NBC also have to realize with the UFC on FOX they will have stiff competition for market and ratings, and few with such a growth rate and such an eager buying public both of the product and the other Product Advertizers selling their products along with the core product into that market space.
Who knows though ABC could make this a very interesting Race especially with under it's ownership of the Disney Corporation and it's holdings of ABC and but even more so it's very prime holding and property of ESPN who have Not seen Eye-to-Eye with the UFC for some time and a solid push by and with ESPN using ProElite content to offset any pressure than Fox might present with the the UFC in their corner. Disney may want to play a solid mix of ProElite first on ESPN and then ABC against Fox and the UFC.
The other Dark Horse could well be Time Warner with HBO who is back in the midst of their ongoing major battle with ShowTime and recently brought back Manny Pacquiao and Promoter Bob Arum ( who is a hated enemy of Dana White ) for the most recent Boxing Event/Fight which will air on Nov 12/2011. Bob may even want to help that process and that relationship maybe even helping to Cross-Promote the Events along with ProElite and to turn this into major battle for territory, Advertizing dollars and market.
Nov 12 / 2011 appears at this time to be a popular date! Wouldn't that make for an interesting story. Time Warner might want also to make use of its News and Distribution Channels with it's holdings and ownership of CNN and Time Magazine.
But still thinking Viacom/CBS/Showtime to be the favorite. Just my thoughts and IMO.
Go ProElite!

King Mo: 'We're just waiting for Strikeforce to die'
by Kevin Haggerty on Sep 5, 2011 2:34 PM EDT in Strikeforce News
"Business as usual."
Remember that? It's what Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White used as the mantra for the acquisition process regarding the Strikeforce organization.
It all started in March of 2011, when Zuffa bought Strikeforce and fans were told that it would not be a merger. Strikeforce would keep doing what they were doing and the UFC would do the same.
Separate entities, right?
Fast forward to almost six months later. In the time that has passed, one of Strikeforce's champions (welterweight Nick Diaz) has vacated his belt and jumped ships to the UFC. Two other Strikeforce champions, Alistair Overeem and Dan Henderson, are no longer under contract.
Most believe that Strikeforce's lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez, will also be leaving the fold, just as soon as he gets an offer from the UFC.
People outside the Strikeforce organization have been open and honest about the outlook for the one-time Scott Coker led promotion. Until now, no one inside the organization has been willing to go on record with a critically realistic prediction of how things will go down.
"King Mo" Muhammed Lawal told Ariel Helwani what he thinks it means to be a Strikeforce champion these days.
"The thing is, what's the point? What's the point of having the belt when it's been vacated, and the person who vacated it is still fighting somewhere else within the same umbrella, but not the same organization?"
Lawal was surprisingly honest with Helwani during his interview on the MMA Hour, stating that he believes Strikeforce's days are numbered.
"It feels a little weird, because it's not the same," Lawal said. "It's like a cancer patient, like a dying cancer patient. That's how I feel like the organization is. We're just waiting for it to die, to pass. As long as I can get my fights in and they're still around, I want to get them in."
Everyone was thinking it. Lawal just had the "set" to say it.

Kurt Angle Says He Was Recently Offered UFC Contract; Dana White Calls Bullsh*t
(Rear-naked-choke to the ankle: If done right, no can defend.)
Kurt Angle appeared on a recent episode of MMAWeekly Radio and dropped a bombshell that he was very close to coming to terms with the UFC recently.
A former Olympic gold medalist in wrestling, Angle says that appearing in the soon-to-be-relesed MMA movie, “Warrior” re-stoked his fire to compete in MMA. Following his last appearance in the Olympics, Angle chose pro wrestling over MMA and has hinted ever since that he would try his hand at the sport one day.
“I actually contacted Dana White again after the movie. I flew out to meet him once and got a great offer. I contacted him again, I was thinking about dropping out of [TNA] Impact Wrestling, and there were some personal problems with my marriage and I just wanted to get away,” he explained. “I contacted Dana White, I flew out, and he had me take the UFC physical. I passed it, thank God, and he gave me the offer.”
He says that some of the clauses in the deal were stifling to his wrestling career and his counter terms, which likely were financially-related weren’t a positive fit for either party.
“The terms weren’t good, I mean not for me, and the terms I gave him weren’t good for him. He wanted me ready in four-and-a-half weeks; I wanted three to six months,” he pointed out. “So I respect Dana White and I love him to death, very good friend. I knew I was capable of winning in four-and-a-half weeks, but I wanted to be at my best.”
The UFC president responded to the 42-year-old former WWE champion’s claims via Twitter with a short, but concise reply: “love Kurt, but not true.”
