4x....considering STX marketshare and their whole drive units, I´d thing 1M/Q is a little bit high, but I can live with it!LOL
Assuming that EVERY drive will be an FDE in the next years, I can live with 40M at 3.5 or even 2 bucks too......
(without ERAS of course)

Ramsey...since I don´t know what features are provided by Danbury, it´s hard to answer. But to encrypt encrypted files would make no sense. It depends on the preboot authentication Danbury provides, if any. If there is no one FDE/ETDM/ETS has won agains DANBURY/ETS!LOL
BR
ISPRO
Doma.....I´m speaking of both desktop and laptops. You´re right on the timeframe! I await Danbury chipset only on high level business boards end of 2008.
FDEs should arrive for desktops in 2ndQ/2008. The FDE drives can be plugged into legacy machines while the Danbury can NOT, since you´d have to change too many components.
For me hardware drive encryption belongs to the drive itself, while Danbury has to encrypt data(unencrypted) coming from the drive to the processor and the way back, to ensure that all data is ALWAYS encrypted...(add SecureBlue from IBM and you´ll NEVER have an UNENCRYPTED bit of data)
BR
ISPRO
Doma....I think Ramsey wanted to point out that sales of FDEs could be influenced by Danbury, not the bundling. Therefore we await ETSPro to be bundled with both FDEs and Danbury! ALL keys need to be managed.....
BR
ISPRO
Ramsey...just answered AWK, before reading your post. That are exactly my thoughts and as I pointed out in my post you were responding, I´m not worried about bundling deals a year from now, since our money is made otherwhere then...
BR
ISPRO
AWK...fully agreed! What I meant is that the client sided ETSL would be sufficient for this purpose, while the FDE needs additional functionalities like preboot authentication, instant erase and so on...
Both need server sided software and that´s where Wave will earn the money! But the 7 bucks are for the ETSPro/ETDM, I hope Dell will bundle ETSPro with Danbury too.
BR
ISPRO
GoKite...absolutely agreed! I think the concern here is, that there is no additional Wave ETS functionality needed and most here wouldn´t like to see the about 7bucks revenue for the FDE bundling to be shrinked to 1buck for ETSL.
For those who fear this scenario, please think about the timeframe. This new Intel technology will hit the market when Wave is in a position where the bundling fees add a minuscule amount to Waves bottom line.

Thanx all......for those who are interested in raid and who it works read the following.
Speed optimizing: (AA)
"If you copy a file to the stripe set, one-third of the file will be copied to each of the three hard drives. The advantage of doing this is that your computer is capable of reading from and writing to all three drives simultaneously. Therefore, disk I/O is three times faster with a three-hard-drive stripe set than it would be using a single hard drive"
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/winntas/maintain/turbo1.mspx?mfr=true
Ramsey, yes most enterprise machines are NON raid, since their data is backuped on the enterprise server (raid1) and drive capacities (raid0) is a non issue these days...
Nite all
BR
ISPRO
Ramsey...ABSOLUTELY every Raid systems fits better in this Danbury encryption sheme. Not only servers are raid machines. I see many workstations and high end gaming/multimedia machines now and in the future setup as raid0 systems...
BR
ISPRO
AA...Raid0 is called stripe set and exists of minimum 2 discs. The stripe set makes one "virtual" disc of the two with double capacity. Since the discs act like one disc there is an improvement in capacity and speed. Raid0 is dangerous in my eyes since if one disc has a head crash you´ll loose ALL data.
Raid1 is a simple HDD mirror...
IMO the key point regarding encryption is, that an FDE in a Raid systems has the problem that since several discs store data redundant and data is therefore redundant encrypted (5 to 20 times in a high level raid). It´s better to encrypt data before REACHING the disc, since you have to encrypt only once and the encrypted data is stored mulitple.
But for all NON raid systems I would consider FDEs as the better solution. SO we´ll see FDE in all discs in the next years....

Helpful.....regarding the release time, I think our company is transforming from a NEWS driven one to a REAL company. It doesn´t count anymore WHEN a PR is released, only the content and future earnings.....
The time we´ll see earnings released BEFORE market open will be the point WHEN it is too late to step in!

Wise and absolutely reasonable words of one of my favorites here! Fully agreed and thanx for expressing my thoughts...

Alea....re: Renesas, what we know for sure is that Wave was able to convince them to use the NTRU TSS. Well now there are two possibilities:
1. They build their TPM management software on their own
2. They´ll bundle ESC or ETSL
Since Renesas is a Silicon company, I´d guess they´ll bundle ESC in the future....BICBW
BR

Doma, Ramsey.....Tarox offers different packages, beginning with ESC/ETDM up to the full ETS/ETDM with server sided software.

Thanx for the kind words, this is really a great community and I´m glad to be able to add something here and there.
I´m sure my guess is as good as yours zen or anybody else here Since I´ve some customers, who force me to sell them hardware LOL, I can take a look on the different OEMs and what they are doing. Except Dell and HP, NOBODY jumped on the TC train yet!
Good for us that all the IFX equipped machines come without preinstalled TPM management, so here is room for Wave....
Have a nice day all

FDE.2 drive support-competition-Waves advantage.....
Since many folks here wonder about announcements from software FDE companies to support the FDE.2 drives I want to discuss a few points about their intentions and the implications...
1. Software vs. Hardware FDE
I think everybody knows that hardware based solutions are much BETTER, FASTER, CHEAPER than pure software. Software solution consume CPU power for encryption and have to initially encrypt the hole drive before working. Sometimes software based solutions have to be deactivated if you want to install an new software.
2. NEW systems and legacy machines
Software FDE companies can support new and legacy machines with their solution, FDE.2 has to be installed on legacy machines. The good news here is, that FDE.2 doesn´t need a TPM present to work, since it can store (limited) and generate key on a hidden partition. Nevertheless you have to switch the drive on legacy systems. So I would say ALL new machines will be ordered with FDE.2 while old one used the software encryption systems.
AND HERE IS THE POINT!
Software vendors KNOW their TIME RUNS OUT, so they have to build support for the new drives to maintain their position as an encryption company. But consider, their MARGIN lies in their software, and NOT in supporting FDE.2! It´s just their ONLY chance to sell their software in the NEAR future. Assuming the hardware replacement cycle is about 4 years, we can calculate WHEN the end of software based encryption is here....
3. FDE.2 with/without TPM binding
FDE.2 can act (limited) as root of trust, since they store the keys on a hidden partition. Being mobile devices, they can´t assure, WHAT machine connects to the network. It´s a matter of time when FDE.2 HAS to be used ONLY in conjunction with TPMs. The NON TPM function is designed to support legacy systems IMO!
4. Waves role vs. other FDE.2 supporting companies
It can be discussed OFTEN enough, what Wave does and what the OTHERS can´t do. Wave has built a FULL client and server sided TPM/FDE.2/BIOMETRIC management infrastructure, while others ONLY support FDE.2 WITHIN their excisting SOFTWARE solution ON THE CLIENT SIDE!
So GUESS WHICH company will win the race, WHEN enterprises, govs demand an INTEGRATED, EASYtoUSE and COMPLETE management suite for the NEW TCG ecosystem....
Make your bets, we´re in the middle of the HW replacement cycle and I guess the NEW FDEs will be deployed on near EVERY machine containing critical data. TC is here and here to stay, nobody has what we have, nobody is bundled on so many different industry leaders like we are.
It has begun, ONLY upside from here on.....
Have a nice sunday all

Helpful, your efforts are really appreciated! Thanx/eom
BR

Lugan, zen, sorry to step in.............
This is the WEAKNESS (if one can call this weakness) of a NON TPM enabled FDE.
A removeable RootOfTrust has no machine binding. So if the thieves know your pin they can install the drive in another machine and boot the disc.
If the password is stored IN the TPM they have to KNOW the password and have to boot it in YOUR machine to reconfigure it to work in other machines.
But since most the hole laptop is stolen this doesn´t matter. They have to know the pin!
BR
ISPRO
SENSATIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanx
ISPRO
Matt......implications. Difficult to answer, but I often posted, that we´ll see MANY companies claiming the usage and compatibility of/with a TPM. But be sure it´s a HUGE difference (in a programming point of few) to say "hey TPM, PLEASE generate and STORE a password for my application called X" or to say "Hey TPM you´re mine and I, and ONLY I have the right and the capabilities to manage you" and BTW "I talked with my father and he committed to manage and store your keys CENTRALLY".
And thats REALLY difficult to copy, especially at this stage of development.....BE SURE of it, the RACE is already WON !
