Hi Friends:
Many of you have wondered where I had disappeared over
the last 9 days? No reply to Emails or phone or
anything. Well, I took an interesting detour on my
life journey and lived to tell you about it.
I had a quadrupled by-pass heart surgery on the last
day of the year. It was physically painful and
draining, but I felt a mental rebirth as I will start
2002 with a “fresh” blood supply designed to maximize
my energy. What a wonderful gift from God and the
American Medical Technology.
For those who did not know me too long, this is the
second heart attack: the first one was in Christmas
1987, 14 years ago. I was a different man then: I
smoked, I ate, I drank, I worked too much; without any
physical conditioning. I abused my body senselessly
and my spiritual life was equally appalling: I was a
self-centered arrogant executive who was money-hungry,
yet always full of anger and envy.
The first heart attack of 1987 changed my life
profoundly. I quit my high-salaried hi-pressured job
at Em Kay Group, I returned to the simplicity of being
a small businessman in Southern California. I started
playing tennis everyday, working out at least 3 times
a week, eating the right diet and trying every day to
become a person I could call “a true gentleman”,
someone with honesty, integrity, loving, giving,
learning… to really live a life full of purpose.
Everything changed, and I cannot thank God enough for
this spiritual renovation.
However, one thing I still could not face until last
Sunday: I had 3 major blockages in my arteries and my
cardiologist kept asking me to let him operate on
these blockages. The way he described the operation
was too painful for me to actually schedule it. So I
procrastinated for the last 14 years on this matter.
Thanks to my good habit on diet and exercise, I
experienced no pain or problem.
However, just 5 days before Christmas 2001, the flu
virus weakened me to the point of great vulnerability:
by the time I got back to California on 12/29, the
worst was about to start. I had a heart attack with
severe chest pain on Sunday 12/30 and on Monday 12/31
I had an open heart operation which lasted 6 hours.
The operation was successful and I am now a new
physical being with a new energy source. However, the
healing process will take at least 6 weeks and until
then, I can work only at half-capacity. I am glad that
it was over and I am looking forward to the new
challenges like a player looking at a new ball season.
A few quick lessons I have learned from this
life-changing experience:
1. Physically, it is very PAINFUL. I suggest that you
should never try it. I could not forget the moment
when the doctor removed the stitches from the metal
rib frame he just put in one day earlier: I would have
chosen the Nazi torture chamber instead. Therefore, if
you are young, keep your body in a good shape with
diet and exercise; if you are old, make sure that when
the blockages in the arteries are full, you are old
enough to die anyway;
2. I was gone for 7 days but the whole world did not
miss me a bit. I always thought that people would miss
me for at least a few weeks; but the reality is that
you are as important as your delusional ego allows
you. Think of this fact the next time you ask for a
pay raise or demand some concession because ”nothing
could run properly without me.” Like my old mentor
used to say,” The cemetery is full of irreplaceable
persons”;
3. If you are lucky enough, you would meet
kind-hearted angels at the most-needed moments. After
surgery, the 3 nurses who took care of me are so
devoted and giving in their duties that they erased my
cynicism on today’s workforce. They are immigrants
from the Philippines, from El Salvador, and from
Alabama, so they also prove that as a melting pot,
America ‘s experience with them is as successful as
with the Europeans last century.
4. After surgery, I had to learn how to breath, how to
stand, how to walk, how to be toilet-trained just like
a little child. When the major assignment of the day
was to take a shower, your perspective on life would
be improved greatly. A small wildflower, a nice-day
smile, a lonely bird, a blue sky…brought to my life
more happiness and meaning than they used to. I am
grateful for such gifts forever.
5. Above all, when I was (almost) at my deathbed, my
only thoughts are on the people I love and like. I did
not think of a single enemy. I wonder why I spent so
much time thinking about them when I was working. As
for the people I love, I am so grateful that my life
could be blessed with such sweet memories and
wonderful feelings. No, you cannot bring with you
anything when you are dead, but you can certainly
bring with you the most beautiful memories.
There you have it: old soldiers just refuse to die.
There are always battles to be fought, war to be won
and plans to be carried out. I have 421 Emails in my
Inbox after 9 days, so if I don’t get around to you
sooner, please don’t write me off. The good old Alan
Phan is still old but much better, I promise.
May God bless your heart and your spirit. 2002 will be
the Great Year we are always looking for.
Best
Alan

Will keep an eye on EENT, Willy. Looks like a good entry right about now. Charts really don't reveal much on that one since it's so "new" to the market. LOL! I'm not a "Sci-Fi" fan LOL! But take a look at this:
Stocks Likely to Rise on Economic Outlook
By Chelsea Emery
Reuters
NEW YORK (Jan. 4) - Expect stocks to climb for the third straight week as investors yank cash out of money market accounts and snap up shares on optimism an economic rebound is around the corner.
The best bets? So-called ''cyclical stocks'' that benefit from the beginning of an economic uptick, such as shares of industrial and chemical companies and makers of big-ticket consumer items like cars and refrigerators.
''We are in a cyclical rally that has more room to go,'' said Charles Reinhard, senior U.S. investment strategist at Lehman Brothers.
A slew of company announcements that profits will beat forecasts is driving investor optimism. Profit warnings are down sharply from recent quarters, the latest data show.
''There's been a huge pickup in positive preannouncements. That's good news,'' Reinhard said. ''The average market rebound from a recession is just under 40 percent and we're 20 percent off our Sept. 21 low. It's just beginning.''
Other factors that hearten investors include the slowing pace of job losses and signs the key services sector is growing. In addition, interest rates are so low that money market returns can't keep pace with inflation. That's prompting investors, who have billions of dollars parked in cash accounts, to buy stocks.
''The gains will be sustainable in the short term because the momentum of economic news is one of a rebound in the United States,'' said Gary Dugan, the London-based global market strategist for asset management firm JP Morgan Fleming, which oversees $600 billion. ''It's dangerous not to go with the flow with the amount of cash around.''
To be sure, investors are wary the fourth-quarter earnings season could bring bad news. Corporate profits are still falling and not expected to rise again until at least the second quarter of 2002, according to Thomson Financial/First Call. And it remains difficult for companies to boost earnings by raising prices amid a still-lagging economy.
Amid a relative dearth of economic data or profit reports next week, positive sentiment is expected to pull stocks still higher.
''Clearly there are some worries -- just look at the number of people who have been laid off -- but I still have the sense the bulls will carry next week,'' said Kevin Connellan, head of equity trading for Northern Trust Co. ''Investors are putting the money where their heart is.''
On the calendar next week: A report on producer prices will help investors gauge whether companies have been able to raise prices, and Alcoa Inc.'s profit report may give a signal of how the battered manufacturing sector is holding up.
Alcoa is the world's biggest aluminum producer and the first Dow Jones industrial average-listed company to report fourth-quarter profits.
For the week, the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.99 percent, up for the third straight week. The Dow average gained 1.2 percent and the Nasdaq composite index rose 3.6 percent.
PROFIT WARNINGS SLOW
Wall Street will remain on high alert for profit warnings ahead of the official earnings season, which begins mid-January.
So far, the positive tone of profit highlights has lifted investors' spirits and helped prompt the S&P 500's three-week rally.
Of the 1,204 early profit announcements so far, 25 percent have been positive. That's more than the 16 percent average clocked during the same time frame of the first three quarters of 2001, according to Thomson Financial/First Call.
At the same time, the pace of warnings has fallen. About 46 percent of all company preannouncements have been negative, down from 67 percent in the earlier three quarters.
Investors point to massive cash stockpiles that could send stocks higher. Just look at a liquidity gauge called ''money at zero maturity,'' or MZM. This measures investments that are easily converted into liquid funds, such as savings accounts and money market funds.
''There's enough cash out there to revive the economy, keep home sales strong and push stock prices higher,'' said Edward Yardeni, chief investment strategist for Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown.'' It's enough to create a whole new bubble if we set our mind to it.''
MZM has surged to $5.6 trillion, said Yardeni. That's up almost $1 trillion in the past year and it now equals about half of the U.S. gross domestic product.
JOBLESS CLAIMS
Weekly jobless claims data is expected on Thursday. The weekly number, formerly overlooked by most stock investors, has become important in recent months as Wall Street clamors for any signs of an economic recovery.
Most recently, the number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment benefits rose sharply, to 447,000, in a sign the labor market remains soft. Unemployment figures are closely watched because higher unemployment can hurt consumer spending, which makes up about two-thirds of the nation's economy.
Also scheduled is the producer price index, which signals change in wholesale prices paid for goods including food and lumber.
Wall Street economists surveyed by Reuters expect prices overall slipped by 0.2 percent, following a decline of 0.6 percent in the previous month. Still the core rate, which excludes the volatile food and energy groups, is expected to rise 0.1 percent, after a gain of 0.2 percent.

Should the GTCI/Sinobull.com merger go off as planned, does anyone have any idea what the new ticker symbol will be? Will it carry the "F" for "Foreign?" Any ideas? Also, does anyone know when the website is scheduled to be updated? Any confirmation on the SRUN/ET merger? Does anyone know when the vote will take place? Is HRCT in a "quiet period" of some sort? It would be nice to get an update. It sounds to me as if everyone that has emailed the company has received no responses. ?? I hope the "silence" will work in a favorful manner.

John,
HAL is one to play on "Investor Emotion." That's how the market appears to be working as of late. I usually put all my main money where the money is flowing. . .and get out just before the industry in which the money is flowing towards begins to peak. Take a look at pharmaceuticals and technology stocks over the past week. The trend should continue for INTC, SUNW, CSCO and CMGI, ICGE, DVNT and several others. Be the first in. . .and be the first out. That's one of my mottos. Get out before a "top" is reached. Don't get too greedy or one will end up waiting too long. Take profits and look for the next industry. Stock issues have NO emotions. Only investors do. Don't get too emotional.

Muell. . .I like that one too! Great penny stock pick. I'm building a very LARGE position in one of my favorite penny stocks. That's the only way I can make money off those doggon things. I need to open another account with a broker that is "penny stock" friendly. My commissions with CSFB are just too doggon high. That is. . .unless I find a penny that converts to a buck! LOL. LRCM should definitely be added to the "stocks to watch" list. It may turn hot, fast!

CMGI: We caught this one on Friday at the open @ 1.84. It's trading at 2.24 in the after hours. Could hit 3.00 in short duration. Strong watch: http://host.wallstreetcity.com/wsc2/chart.html?0fval0=104&1fval0=216&3fval0=204&4fval0=2...
OPLK: Trending upward, nicely. The RSI is just about to break the 70% line. When a stock breaks above the 70% line, it typically runs fast. Move fast if you're going to move: http://host.wallstreetcity.com/wsc2/chart.html?0fval0=104&1fval0=216&3fval0=204&4fval0=2...
**DVNT: Appears to be at a point "just before a run." Take a look at the charts. This is another fast mover and small cap stock that performs well: http://host.wallstreetcity.com/wsc2/chart.html?0fval0=104&1fval0=216&3fval0=204&4fval0=2...
Perhaps what we can do is "copy and paste" other stock charts to this list and narrow it down before Monday. Monday could be a good day to get positioned. The market usually takes a small breather after "3" consecutive "up" days. We've got some great stock pickers reading this thread!
Oh yeah. . .DNAP ~~ took a nap on Friday. The "ask" is now headed back up. It will be interesting to watch that one.

Thanks Ray! I've narrowed them down to about 10 stocks. Will report before the end of the weekend. Teamwork!

ICGE. . .is mounting for something. . .
And it appears it may be to "come out of the gate!":

Arch. . .thanks for your work! I'll read some charts later this afternoon and see what I come up with. CMGI traded very well after hours. I was watching RHAT but didn't bring it up since I thought it had already done the run it was going to do. WRONG! Just like CMGI and SUNW. INTC, CSCO. . .they will be powerful when the techs are running. SMTC should be reaching its high for January. At any rate, I'm looking for the lower priced goodies. My last read on CMGI has a potential of hitting over 3.00 in short duration. That stock has a history of running from 2 to 6 bucks. . .in a flash! Lets find more like that one.

I don't buy into that thought process. Just because someone sells some shares doesn't mean a stock is going lower. When/if managerial staff begin dumping shares, investors might want to look for the exits. For each sale, somebody is buying the stock. And it held above the 30-day MA. However, other technical reads aren't so strong. Nonetheless, they can turn rather swiftly on news. Actually, the only thing HRCT has to do is "deliver the goods" they state via PRs. Then the naysayers will go away and the stock will run its course. Whatever course that may turn out being.

Tinberry. . .Thanks for keeping OC's posts up. I think many of us have similar concerns, we just express them a little differently. This is going to be a critical month for HRCT to deliver on stated objectives. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about with GTCI and Sinobull. . .as the "vote" already took place, and finalization is expected to take place on January 15th. As far as SRUN goes, the vote still needs to take place prior to any possible confirmation. Only time will tell. It is nice, however, to see that the HRCT website is going to be updated. When HRCT first developed that site, I mentioned some of my own concerns and wasn't met with "open arms" so to speak. I did not care for it. . .but didn't think it was terrible by any stretch of imagination. Perhaps the "new website" will be more balanced for the future. ?? I sure hope so. It's going to be an interesting January.

I'm always watching PERF. It is a good company. When the volume picks up. . .that one jumps like DVNT. Lets catch em before they run or just after they start running!

Thanks John! I like HAL. I think the odd trading that has taken place in the last two weeks is "uncalled for," to say the least. HAL will bounce back. . .and I'm glad someone else thinks the same. I'll check the others out, as well.

**Just a note. . .before leaving. . .CHECK out the HRCT Ihub thread. . .there is someone posting logos that will apparently appear on the NEW HRCT website. I believe they may be posting the information, from China. Check it out. . .they're cool! Lets hope we can catch HRCT. . .Rockin next week!

Tim. . .I wish we would have been in on that one! I just took a look at the news. That would have been tough to catch. It was like an "overnight" dream. You had to be there to enjoy it. I doubt it will go much higher. Maybe we can catch a couple like that over the weekend. If anyone sees some interesting charts over the weekend, post the tickers so we can check em out and get ready for Monday. Actually, with 3 consecutive "up" days in the markets. . .Monday might prove to be challenging. Tuesday, however, should prove to be interesting.
Have a great weekend. I'm off . . .until I find some time tomorrow and Sunday to find some more WINNERS.
PS~~ Thanks Arch for bringing CMGI to the attention of the board right before the market got in!
