Smartphones shipments grew 64% world wide, Android grew 886% too:

Hence, IMO, what does AAPL need to do:
1) More frequent updates of iOS and/or hardware?
2) One or more killer Apps or hardware break throughs?
3) More carries. . .
4) Distance themselves from competitors in stability and security?
5) Add a smaller, lighter, and less expensive iPad, and update Mama iPad?
6) Expand further into enterprise and education markets? And,
7) No missteps competitors can exploit.
All of the above?
What else?
The next one to three years are going to be very challenging and competitive for the company. . .and that's assuming stability in management and internal operations. A year from now the challenges and offerings created by competitors will be sizable.
Lots of sad faced Bears today. . .
Is this a breakout?
Will Amazon Turn The Kindle E-Reader Into A Fully Fledged Tablet?

Look what escaped from the lab:

Clearly, IMO, not ready for prime time. . .
I seriously doubt many here will be willing to spring for one of these in its current form, a few changes to the hardware (processor, screen, etc.) could produce a much better tablet.
So, here's AMZN, 118+.
Anyone buying the new Kindle for $139?
Will the Kindle go even lower as the holiday season nears?

Anything you especially like vs the iPhone?
It all started with the iPhone:

You could probably make one for an iPad out of a paper grocery sack.
I heard on NPR today that GS nets about 550m in two weeks.
That's a bundle, if true.
Anyone care to verify that?
Karin,
Although I don't have an iPad (yet) I do have an iPod Touch (mini iPad) I've used for about two years to make occasional trades, including futures at 3AM! I've used platforms and data from Schwab and Interactive Brokers, the latter is my favorite, and I use StockCharts during market hours, when I'm away from my trading desk.
Interactive Brokers has a nice App in the Store. I also sometimes email myself charts from QuoteTracker that I store in Dropbox. Many things are possible for a trader using an iPT, and it can only get better with an iPad. . .faster, larger screen, better battery, and 3G.
Check out some market related Apps on an iPad at an Apple Store.
There's a huge future for the iPad and similar devices. I think it's a big tech step forward.
SPY Daily continues Up.
GS driving financials higher.
May settle with SEC soon, perhaps today!
The Financial Reform bill that just passed has disrupted the market today, IMO.
SPY, Up again.
Whippy times.
SPY: Whipped, Down at 1520 (NYT).
Yes, it was the current version of SPY 30.
That will change. . .it's going to get faster, in terms of how early in the cycle the signal occurs.
SPY D update will come later.
. . .later today.
BTW: FAS Up today at 1300 (NYT).
Been busy tweaking the SPY model, since it's not leveraged it's a little different from FAS.
SPY: Up 1435 (NYT).
Concerning "the bumper solution" to the iPhone4 reception issue, AAPL could:
A) Give out bumpers to all iPhone4 customers, or,
B) Offer a time limited coupon over the Internet that could, in combo with a receipt for an iPhone4, be exchanged for a bumper.
Option A would likely be more expensive for the company since each customer would receive a bumper, whereas option B would not be taken by all customers and, in addition, could give an impression of how many customers considered they were experiencing a significant reception problem with their iPhone4s.

. . .and a show of strength, now.
The futures might be trying to spark a rally.
We shall see. Final hour might be exciting.

Red again.
SPY turned intraday Down at 1400 (NYT).
Microsoft recruits iPad owners for study on its Redmond campus:

Imagine that!
Hi Tom,
Thanks for the info and review!
BTW: How's ol' CHY looking for you? I'm still in and profitable.
Futures weakening.
S&P Futures moving Up following the low shortly after NYSE opening today.
AAPL moving Up nicely this AM.
So SPY 30 has reset and is now Up.
Waiting on INTC earnings.
Did he have it in a case?
That seems to be a simple solution to the reception problem that's getting a lot of attention in the media, on the net.
Those simple bumper cases they sell for about $30 (probably cost less than $1 to make, in mass) will take care of the issue, apparently.
IPhone 4 Recall? Get a Grip!
http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100713/iphone-4-recall-get-a-grip/?reflink=ATD_yahoo_ticker
Yes, yet the alternative is that SPY 30 resets for another leg up.
We shall see.
Apple's iPhone 4 woes deepen as some see recall 'inevitable':

How low might it go?
If there's follow through on this 30 min signal SPY Daily will also be Down EOD.
SPY: Intraday 30 min, Down 1330 (NYT).
Playing The Rebound With Leveraged ETFs:

Yes, I'll post when the direction for $SPX changes.
It's looking increasingly toppy, short term.
PS: We're still due for a pullback / some profit taking. Might start today or after near earnings reports. Then watch for higher lows, which would be quite bullish.
FAS, $SPX, SPY, SSO, TNA, etc. are all pretty much running together here. Strong move today with the gap up. Futures led the way starting about 3AM (NYT).
The 25 to 26 area for FAS is one to watch. . .some distance away at this point. If it moves through that, well, we'll see.
Watch the small to medium caps, too. Semis strong with INTC earnings near.
Bullish day.
AAPL taking a hard hit with their iP4 problems, including PR goofs.
