The rebound in companies paying dividends could be the beginning of a long-term change in the way they treat cash and their shareholders - one that would make investors much better off, Jason Zweig argues. Companies like Diamond Offshore $DO view dividends as rewarding loyal shareholders, harkening back to the 19th century when most of the returns on U.S. stocks came from dividend income
Used to being near the top of the list on Edgar's database sorted by reported portfolio weightings for Apple $AAPL , Wedgewood Partners (9% AUM in the stock) fell to 67th place in September. The fickle money is in the process of being weaned out, says the firm's David Rolfe, expecting Wedgewood will have moved back up the Edgar list by mid-February's update.

U.S. auto sales are expected to cap off the best year for the industry since 2007 with a projected 9% rise for December to an annual sales pace of ~15.2M vehicles, helped in part by higher incentive spending on pickup trucks. But a strong end to the year could be overshadowed by concerns that consumers will curb spending in January due to the fiscal cliff. $F $GM
11 analysts have lowered their Apple $AAPL targets in recent weeks, Fortune observes. Many of them attributed their cuts (I, II) to reports of iPhone order reductions, but the recent drop in Apple shares is probably playing a role as well. Topeka's Brian White maintains the highest target ($1,111), and ACI Research's Ed Zabisky the lowest ($270). The average target is still at $740, 44% above current levels.

It's time to "back up the truck" on Apple $AAPL , says Oracle Investment's Laurence Balter, who's reiterating a Strong Buy and $670 PT. Balter notes Apple money flows are down $1.56B over the last 30 days, something he considers a sign of retail capitulation, and believes block trade activity indicates heavy institutional buying. He ignited a firestorm in August by downgrading Apple to Hold (shares then traded at $659), but has made multiple upgrades since.
When Apple $AAPL slumps on iPhone estimate cuts, it's not surprising component suppliers are doing the same. Cirrus Logic $CRUS and Skyworks $SWKS are the biggest victims, but OmniVision $OVTI , TriQuint $TQNT , Broadcom $BRCM , and Qualcomm $QCOM aren't unscathed either. Avago $AVGO is off in spite of receiving an upgrade to Buy from Goldman, which cites a low valuation and an expected cyclical pickup in networking/industrial chip demand.

Market recap:
Stocks edged higher in a quiet session, as investors shook off good news (a big jump in McDonald's same-store sales) and bad news (political turmoil in Italy) alike. Stocks continue firmly stuck in a narrow range of 1,386-1,433 on the S&P, as everything is on hold pending a resolution to the fiscal cliff. Crude oil futures fell for a fifth straight session; gold climbed to $1,714.
A leukemia therapy that Novartis $NVS bought from the University of Pennsylvania has freed nine out of 12 patients of the blood cancer. The treatment works by taking the sufferers' immune cells, reprogramming them to target leukemia cells, and then re-injecting them into the patients. Novartis will call the treatment CTL019.
Apple $AAPL has its price target cut to $800 from $900 by Jefferies, which sees slowing iPhone growth and weaker margins ahead. Was it only a month ago Peter Misek reiterated his $900 target?
