Thanks Gulfbreeze...I don't think I'll go back to cedar. If I should decide against the composite material, my next choice would be the wolmanized lumber. I know it needs maintenance too but not as much, as I understand it.
I expect the same advice about the fasteners applies to it as well.
YES! Would like a gal's opinion, Susie. And appreciate the advice as well. I can see I'd better look at an existing deck..will ask about it Monday. Surely the guy at the store should know of any.
We live in our back yard so appearances are important to me especially since my goal is to eventually get a Yard of the Month award (to rub my sisters' noses in it...they all have received them in the towns where they live). Seriously though...any visitors see the deck immediately too as it is right next to our great room with lots of glass overlooking it.
One of the drawbacks about a small town...no Consumer Affairs or Better Business Bureau here. I had a long "talk" with the Chamber of Commerce people here about that...after the fiasco with my driveway... which resulted in a cancellation of our membership as the services they provided were virtually useless, IMO. Thankfully, our attorney took care of my problem.
Susie...I get that nasty red block with an x in the center....sorry. Would have loved to see it.
BTW, got my eye on my neighbour's pregnant calico? If she has a calico kitten, it's all mine!
I would never have thought of that one, Capt. Thanks once again. :)
Groan! Bull...you guys are something else when it comes to golf.
One of the gifts I received for my birthday was a plaque...
"When I die bury me on the golf course so my husband will visit me 5 times a week."
ROFL
Capt...one more question. How far apart should the boards be? I noticed in the pictures Bull had found that there is a difference between the two decks. (#1473)
Bull...you got that right! LOL Usually, one half of a spousal unit is considered handy. With us it would be a toss-up as to who is the most ignorant about such things.. but the difference is I don't balk at hiring someone to get whatever done...once and for all instead of constantly procrastinating.
My Dad could fix or replace ANYTHING around the house and I just assumed all men could. hahahahahahahaha!!
Doug....Yes, the samples that were sent out showed some fading just like cedar ...to a pale grey color. I selected "Saddle" ....it fades some but more of a brown color. The texture did appear to be a little grainy.
We have our bouts with rain and humidity but the sun is the most damaging...to everything down here, IMO.
Ah so, Bull. I see what you mean...quite a difference!
Bull...Well, in life one must compromise especially with a "Honey"...he doesn't nag me about being a computer addict (anymore) and I let him play as much golf as he wants. At least he doesn't hang around here trying to tell me what to do. LOL
Excel...I'm not even going to tell you about what he did with my driveway! Suffice it to say....after walking on it a couple of times and going into the house, my carpet was no longer white.
Live and learn!
Excel....it's beautiful. I intend having railings very similar to those in the picture. Have the lattice effect now but am bored with it.
Bull...not just replacing...adding a little more too.
SU???
Capt...thanks for the link. I feel sure at this point that I'll be going with the TREX. How do you feel about the knock off brands?
BTW, he did tell me he would use wolmanized (sp) lumber for the trusses and joints.
You say " have the contractor use the hidden clips to install it, No fastners holes showing at all.."
Hidden clips? Fastner holes? Am I out of my depth or what?? Never heard of that but I'll dang sure toss it in there very casual-like when I talk to the contractor again...by the time we're through just the talking stage, he's gonna think I know my stuff thanks to you guys!

He did tell me he was planning on using wolmanized (sp) lumber for the trusses and joints.

BullnBear...I have only one thing to say about that. Bullcorn! LOL
Excel...that reminds me of an incident years ago. Some guy was going door to door (I know! I learned a lesson, believe me.)...said he could do any job that was needed. So okay..the cedar deck and back of my house needed "treating"...we discussed it, he gave me a price and I agreed to it. But he wanted a check up front to get the material and I was so stupid I GAVE it to him.
Man, I was really sweating his return...not so much losing the money but I knew I'd catch hell from "the golfer." Well, the guy returned and he did a pretty good job except he'd rented a sprayer of some kind to apply the stuff and ended up killing my prize rose bushes! I could see him out there almost gagging at times from inhaling the fumes...finally he went and got a face mask.
Doug...The assistant manager sent out some samples of TREX...I can tell it isn't at all like the cedar I have now but the fact that it's virtually maintenance free is the big plus.
It just occurred to me that I need to find out if it's slippery when wet.
Y'all are really a big help...it also didn't occur to me to look at an existing deck as I'm very concerned with aesthetics.
Thanks!
BnB...Excel sent me a link to the website. Have already checked it out.
We don't have many choices in this small town...I find it interesting that one of the locally owned stores (there are only two)... carries TREX while our Lowe's SuperStore carries the knock off.
I'm learning more than I want to know about all this stuff but it is kinda interesting now that I'm into it.
Excel...I'm not even sure at this point if this guy is going to submit a formal bid. He is working closely with the store who handles TREX (the ass't manager has already called me twice) so hopefully it all will fall into place. He's bi-lingual which will help a lot.
I do have a call in to another contractor to get a bid. I'm in no hurry...this project has been ongoing for prox a year so I can be patient.
I don't know how I got stuck with it though! I guess that little white golf ball is more enticing than I thought! GRRR
Never even thought to check his license...thanks for that tip. I just assumed he had one as he was recommended by a local person connected with the police department.
Troy...the recycling places still pay for cans. I've been saving mine for a few years now for the kids next door who add the money they get to their college fund.
Excel...what a coincidence...the contractor just brought me a color chart for TREX. He hasn't given me a quote yet.
I had another (recommended) contractor lined up for months to replace my cedar deck...he claimed he was busy but had me on his list. Hah! Now his phone is disconnected so am starting all over with a new guy.
He doesn't speak English too well and I don't speak Spanish but he comes highly recommended....still it's like the blind leading the blind.
This type of thing is NOT in my area of expertise so appreciate your advice
Does anybody on this board know anything about composite decking material? I want to replace a cedar deck with something that is maintenance-free.
Would appreciate any input as I have no knowledge about such things.
I dunno what it is, Old_D. There was some discussion a while back about Geo-Cities but don't remember all the details plus I'm not a techie so probably wouldn't know what they were talking about anyway.
I do have the embedded sounds feature on.
My old Mac teacher will be visiting later this month...I've got my fingers crossed that it's something I'm doing and he'll correct it for me.
Until then, I'll enjoy your and Larry's selections. ;)
WTB...I "trained" MrNovo a long time ago...that is, if he wants to go to the racetrack or the golf course, don't mention my computer. Then again, perhaps he "trained" me...hmmmm, I never thought of that!
Anyway...y'all have a great weekend! ;)
WTB....As you should be! It's not your fault I can't hear the music.
I'll behave ...or at least try to (hee hee), and stop bitchen.
You got that right, Missy! ;)
I just checked....don't see any sign of the little boogers but it's still early.
I'll let you know.
IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT, LARRY!!!!!
You can't have me (in the audience) cause I can't
Hearrrrrrrrrr Youuuuuuuuu.
You and Missy frustrate me....Grrrrrrr!
I know, I know...throw the #$%@^$ Mac out the window. LOL
Have a good one, WTB!
Another good choice, Old-D....I can hear all your selections but none of Missy's. ;(
Old-D....good idea!
Missy...I like my Mac...it's all I know. If/or I ever do get a PC, I'll be in deep doo-doo as I most certainly know what you mean, however...at least I could get more help (I think) when I need it.
My original Mac teacher/guru is out of my life now...then I was fortunate to find another young man employed by my ISP who was an Apple techie ...now he's gone and I am beginning to go into panic mode each time I have a glitch.
Woe is me.
Cinderella is now 75 years old. After a fulfilling life with the now dead Prince, she happily sits upon her rocking chair, watching the world go by from her front porch, with a cat named Matt for companionship.
One sunny afternoon, out of nowhere, appeared the Fairy Godmother. Cinderella said "Fairy Godmother, what are you doing here after all these years?" The Fairy godmother replied, "Cinderella, you have lived an exemplary life since I last saw you. Is there anything for which your heart still yearns?" Cinderella was taken aback, overjoyed, and after some thoughtful consideration, and almost under her breath she uttered her first wish: "I wish I were wealthy beyond comprehension. Instantly, her rocking chair was turned into solid gold. Cinderella was stunned. Matt, her old faithful cat, jumped off her lap and scampered to the edge of the porch, quivering with fear.
Cinderella said, "Oh thank you, Fairy Godmother.
The Fairy Godmother replied, "It is the least I can do. What
does your heart want for your second wish?" Cinderella looked down at her frail body, and said, "I wish I were young and full of the beauty of youth again". At once, her wish became reality, and her beautiful youthful visage
returned. Cinderella felt stirrings inside her that had been dormant for years. A long- forgotten vigor and vitality began to course through her.
Then the Fairy Godmother again spoke, "You have one more wish, what shall you have?" Cinderella looks over to the frightened cat in the corner and says, "I wish for you to transform Matt, my old cat, into a kind and handsome young man." Magically, Matt suddenly underwent so fundamental a change in his biological make-up that, when complete he stood before her, a man so beautiful! the likes of which neither she nor the world had ever seen. The Fairy Godmother again spoke, "Congratulations, Cinderella.
Enjoy your new life." And, with a blazing shock of bright blue
electricity, she was gone. For a few eerie moments, Matt and Cinderella looked into each other's eyes. Cinderella sat, breathless, gazing at the most stunningly perfect man she had ever seen.
Then Matt walked over to Cinderella, who sat transfixed in her rocking chair, and held her close in his young muscular arms. He leaned in close, blowing her golden hair with his warm breath as he whispered:
"Bet you're sorry you neutered me now..."

Hey Old_D ....I got it! Go figure.
Haven't heard that in a long time...good selection. ;)
Missy....I think it's because I have an iMac...my next computer will be a Dell.
It's frustrating to be marching to a different drummer (nothing personal and no offense Old D ;) when it comes to the music world...otherwise I savor being "different." LOL
Awwww...."You do not have plug-in needed, etc., etc., etc. ...."
That's all I need.. It's been such a bad day and I wanted to hear this song.
Weep Sniff Sniff Sob
Hi Missy!
How about some "special" brownies? LOL
I've been catching up on old posts here. Now I really am getting back to work. Really, really.
See y'all later. :)
Twenty five? Dead or Alive?
I'm from the old school...there are some performers whom I don't consider "country."
BTW, I have a friend who has been collecting (and selling) old 78's (and old baseball cards) for a couple of years now. He tells me it's very lucrative. I bought a few albums from him...now am trying to find a vintage record player if such a thing exists.
I have one Jimmy Rodgers...or is it Rogers? He was playing it in his booth at a flea market...I wasn't too impressed and told him it sounded like he was dying. Sheesh...he was, as it turned out.
Also have one Segovia! Could I include him??
Ha Ha... German Shepherd....been there, done that. Fortunately the dog wasn't trained to sniff out illegal limes (only two of them) stuffed in my bra. LOL
It took a while...actually a long while...but am listening to it now.
Funny!
