Survey: 86% won't be following Stern to satellite radio

By Tim Barker
Feb 06, 2006 (The Orlando Sentinel - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- Howard Stern's move last month to satellite radio was supposed to signal the beginning of a new era for the fledgling industry. In exchange for his $500 million five-year contract, Stern was expected to drive droves of listeners to subscriber-based Sirius Satellite Radio, currently No. 2 behind market leader XM Satellite Radio. So far, so good for Sirius, which watched its subscriber base leap to 3.3 million from 2.17 million during the months leading up to Stern's switch. Still, it may be a little too soon to proclaim conventional radio dead, according to a recent survey by American Media Services, a radio brokerage and consulting firm based in Charleston, S.C. In the random telephone survey of 1,008 adults, the vast majority -- 86 percent -- said they would not be switching to satellite radio because of Stern. "We have long suspected that all the national media interest in Stern and satellite radio did not reflect what was going on with the American consumer," said Ed Seeger, president of American Media. Conventional radio stations got high marks from respondents for providing local traffic and weather information, as well as local news coverage. Super Bowl on the satellite It's hard to argue, however, about some of the inherent advantages of satellite. For this year's Super Bowl in Detroit, Sirius demonstrated one of its selling points by offering a variety of play-by-play broadcasts. Pittsburgh Steelers' fans could choose a Steelers' team broadcast channel. Ditto for fans of the Seattle Seahawks. And for those non-English speaking fans, there were offerings in Spanish, French, Japanese, Russian, and even Mandarin Chinese. Briefly Kenton Smith Advertising & Public Relations has become the agency of record for Healthcare Support Staffing. The firm will manage the health-care company's marketing, planning, advertising and public relations efforts. Fry Hammond Barr recently signed on to handle advertising and public relations for a pair of condominium conversions. The firm will work with the Residences at Sabal Point in Longwood and the Residences at Millenia in Orlando. Both properties are owned by M Properties, an investor group. The Orlando Advertising Federation will have its 2006 ADDY Awards presentation on Feb. 25 at Hard Rock Live. Organizers said they received more than 1,300 entries for the broadcast and print competitions. For more information, e-mail addys@oaf.com. Dodge hoping made-in-Toledo Nitro will ignite SUV market
Sunday , February 05, 2006 14:55 ET
By Julie M. Mckinnon
Feb 05, 2006 (The Blade - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- With options such as a 4.0-liter V-6 engine delivering 255 horsepower, 20-inch tires paired with chrome-clad aluminum wheels, and a sliding cargo floor that can hold up to 400 pounds, DaimlerChrysler AG promises the Toledo-made Dodge Nitro will "ignite" the compact sport utility vehicle market. The chairman of the Dodge National Dealer Council hopes the macho SUV will put some spark back in the brand, which has had a rough couple of years. Dodge's U.S. sales dropped 1 percent last year with less than 1.18 million sold. "This Nitro is exactly what we need," said Andy Palmen, who owns four dealerships in Wisconsin, including two Dodge stores. He added: "This will be Dodge's home run." Three models of the 2007 SUV -- Dodge Nitro, Dodge Nitro SLT, and Dodge Nitro R/T -- will be available in both two and four-wheel drive starting in August. There are two V-6 engines available and three transmissions. The high-end R/T comes standard with performance suspension for sportier handling, 20-inch tires, the bigger engine, and a five-speed automatic. All Nitros will have side curtain airbags in front and back, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control, as well as a rear cargo area completely covered in rubber, said Joe Veltri, director of Dodge truck marketing and product planning. The Nitro also has a rear cargo tray that can be flipped over to make a bin, while a tray that can be taken out and used as a picnic table is an option, Mr. Veltri said. The cargo floor that slides out 18 inches to ease loading and unloading is standard on SLT and R/T models, and both rear and front passenger seats can be folded flat in all Nitros, Mr. Veltri said. "The cargo area is very important to SUV customers," Mr. Veltri said. An optional DVD-based navigation system is available on the Nitro that, in a first for Chrysler, includes real-time traffic updates with Sirius Satellite Radio. Other Nitro features include a remote start, MP3 compatible radio, and the capability to tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. Nitros sold

Howard Stern available on Sirius Canada
The people have spoken and Sirius Canada has listened. Beginning on February 6th, 2006, The 'King of All Media' Howard Stern will have his widely publicized Howard 100 channel added to the Sirius Canada lineup.
Stern garnered much media attention in the final quarter on 2005 as he prepared to make the transition from the Public Airwaves to the Pay-Radio realm. Launching on Sirius Radio in the US on January 9th, Stern in widely acknowledged as being the driving force behind Sirius' recent subscription explosion in the US.
In a statement regarding the Channel's launch in Canada Mark Redmond, SIRIUS Canada President and CEO said, “No one in radio commands more attention than Howard Stern. He is an industry icon with millions of loyal fans throughout the continent who will follow him anywhere to hear his unique form of entertainment. SIRIUS Canada is committed to providing an unrivaled radio experience for Canadian subscribers with the most variety and choice available in radio, and Howard’s show will make our unique entertainment offering even more exciting."
Stern is arguably North America’s most recognized radio personality, and had the top rated morning drive show in the U.S. In the past in Canada, he has faced opposition from many special interest groups and the CRTC due to the content of his show. His show aired for a brief time on public radio in Toronto before being pulled due to complaints.

CANADA GETS SIRIUS
Howard announced that SIRIUS Canada will start broadcasting the show starting on Feb. 6. Howard then mentioned that the whole situation made no sense to him, explaining that he was thrown off stations in Montreal and Toronto years ago for alleged "hate speech" and that he hasn't been on Canadian airwaves since. Although Howard admitted that he didn’t know why the Canadian government changed its mind about broadcasting the show, he commented that it’s “good news” that he’ll be on.

Miniaturized Power
With nanobatteries, power sources finally shrink with the rest of electronics
By Charles Q. Choi
The transistor, dating from 1947, has shrunk from a kludgy, half-inch-high contraption to a device whose components boast dimensions a few hundreds of atoms in length. Batteries, on the other hand, have improved how much power they deliver at roughly one fiftieth of that pace.
Bell Laboratories, which built the first transistor, has now become involved with the reinvention of the battery. The goal is to apply the techniques used for manufacturing transistors to mass-produce a battery that can be built in with the other circuitry on a chip. The device, called a nanobattery, shrinks features of the electrodes to the nanometer scale....continued at Scientific American Digital

Jan 26, 2006 (Chicago Tribune - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- It's another milestone for radio shock jock Howard Stern.
Sirius Satellite Radio, which began airing Stern this month, has grabbed the lead from software giant Microsoft as the biggest short-interest position on the Nasdaq stock market.
Short interest, reported monthly by stock exchanges, represents the number of shares of a stock sold short.
A stock is considered "sold short" when it is borrowed and sold. A short seller is betting on a lower share price, so that the shares borrowed can be repaid at a profit.
Sirius had 113.9 million shares sold short in January, up 12 percent from December, according to Reuters. Microsoft, which has held first place for several months, fell to fourth place, with 81.0 million shares sold short.
Given that Sirius has 1.33 billion shares outstanding, compared to 10.64 billion for Microsoft, Sirius is under serious short-selling pressure.
Two weeks ago, Stern disclosed that he has the right to sell the 34.4 million shares he was awarded in early January.
Over the weekend, the financial weekly Barron's speculated that Sirius rival XM Satellite Radio Holdings represents a better investment.
A high level of short interest is not always a negative signal for investors. Short interest may represent latent "buy" orders, especially if the company's share price rises and squeezes short sellers.
JOINING THE HERD: For years, Abbott Laboratories was one of the first of the Standard & Poor's 500 stocks to post quarterly results.
On Wednesday, the company's 2005 fourth-quarter report emerged a week later than the 2004 fourth-quarter report. Abbott is blending in. Thirty-seven S&P 500 companies posted results Wednesday.
But given the disappointing report Tuesday by Johnson & Johnson, another health-care giant, Abbott's numbers Wednesday not only looked good but looked good by comparison. It was worth the wait.
