Positive Affirmations
Overview
We all have a running internal monologue. This is called our ‘self-talk’. A lot of times our self talk can be negative and unhelpful which can cause stress. You can turn your thinking around by creating positive affirmations (positive self-talk statements), and training your brain to use these statements where you would traditionally use negative or unhelpful ones.
Developing positive self talk will help reinforce positive feelings and break cycles of stress.
Science Summary
Positive Affirmations uses the established techniques of positive affirmation training to help manage stress and worry by replacing negative self talk with more constructive and positive self talk. It was co-developed in conjunction with Ultrasis Interactive Healthcare, a leader in evidence-based digital wellness solutions.

Beating the Blues
The London company responsible for Beating the Blues, a mental health treatment for mild-to-moderate depression and anxiety based on computerised cognitive behavioural therapy, has agreed a joint venture with US healthcare company UPMC.
Ultrasis developed the treatment in conjunction with the Institute of Psychiatry in London, which was approved by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence for NHS use in 2006
. However, uncertainty about changes in the health service have led to a drop in revenues in the past year and it is hoped that the US venture will give the AIM-listed company fresh impetus.

04/11/09 INTERVIEW: Ultrasis Hopes To Seal US JV Deal Next Year
LONDON (Dow Jones)--Interactive healthcare services provider Ultrasis PLC (ULT.LN) Wednesday said it is in talks with potential joint venture partners in the U.S. and hopes to seal a deal next year.
The company's products provide computerised cognitive behavioural therapy for depression, anxiety, and other stress-related conditions.
Ultrasis, which recently launched a Dutch version of its "Beating the Blues" computerised CBT treatment, already serves healthcare providers in some parts of the U.S.
"We're having significant discussions in the U.S. about our services, which have been prompted by changes from the Obama administration," Chief Executive Nigel Brabbins told Dow Jones Newswires Wednesday.
He said any deals would likely take the form of licensing agreements.
"America spends a massive amount of money treating diabetes, obesity and things like that but they're not really tackling the depression which is prompting these health problems, so people aren't getting better," Brabbins said.
However, he said a recent shift in focus in the U.S. to tackling underlying mental health problems before physical conditions provides a big opportunity for Ultrasis to win more business.
"The market in the U.S. is worth more than $200 million and our aim is to find a partner with the delivery network to support our product," he said.

27/01/11 Partnership Pact With UPMC To Develop, Drive Beating The Blues............
LONDON (Dow Jones)--Ultrasis PLC (ULT.LN), a provider of interactive health care services, Thursday announce a partnership with the UPMC Insurance Services Division which is part of the U.S. healthcare provider, UPMC.
MAIN FACTS:
-UPMC Insurance Services is investing $1.0 million to develop a U.S. specific version of "Beating the Blues" ("BtB"), which will be available, from July 2011, and will be available across the UPMC's provider services as well as through UPMC Insurance Services companies, which provide health benefits management to well over one million people in Medicare, Medicaid, EAP and Behavioural Health programs.
-Ultrasis and UPMC Insurance Services have further agreed to the formation of a 50:50 owned joint venture company to launch the U.S. BtB in the wider U.S. market.
-Both Ultrasis and UPMC will invest to develop and drive sales opportunities across U.S. states, government, insurance, primary care providers, major corporations and other health care providers seeking to enhance their mental health and wellbeing services.

The Counselling Division comprises of a Staff Counselling Service and a Student Counselling Service.
Cardiff University Counselling Division is BACP Accredited, delivering safe, ethical and high quality counselling and other wellbeing options to the whole of the University Community. Most core counsellors are accredited and two supervisors are also BACP Accredited Supervisors. The Counselling Division works with approximately 1000 clients a year. CORE outcome measures are good, clients are pleased with what is provided, and there are opportunities for personal and professional development.
Staff are encouraged to write for professional journals: our counsellors have produced a steady output, over the last 4 years, to professional journals, on a wide range of topics.
Counselling for students is provided in the Student Support Centres at Cathays Park and at the Heath Park Campus where students studying for the healthcare professions are based. Staff counselling is based in a separate provision at Cathays Park. The Counselling Division enjoys an excellent reputation within the University as well as nationally. In 2010 Cardiff University Counselling Service was awarded the BACP Innovation Award for the “Cardiff Model”. This model delivers a managed care approach for students: providing a clear and structured model of working that ensures equality and rapid access. The model provides time limited counselling with a significant proportion of students opting for single session therapy.
The Staff Counselling Service follows a traditional EAP model and provides a range of additional services including:----
"The Relief Series and Beating The Blues"................. Staff Counselling is housed separately to the Student Counselling; however, in very close proximity.
Counsellors work at different times across the three venues. This provides best value for clients, potentially giving access to a wider range of counsellor’s skills, developing the skills of the counsellors. The result is a strong, integrated identity for the Counselling Division. This range of experience enables counsellors to develop and enhance their own skills working with different client groups.
Both the Staff and Student strands have popular workshop programmes
The Staff Counselling Service contributes to the University Positive Working Environment initiative, as well as supporting several HR policies.
We provide placements for trainee counsellors (Associates); these placements are highly valued and sought-after locally. All of our counsellors contribute to this programme by supervising associates.
We use CORE as our outcome measure; however, we are keen to develop a more holistic set of outcome measures to address some of the issues surrounding questions of “value added”. This will become a team discussion over 2011.
Our counsellors each have a particular area of interest which they are encouraged to develop, enhancing the provision for clients. These currently include: work to enhance provision for BME and LGBT clients; Eating Disorder provision; workshops, and communication with clients through the website and research.
It is anticipated that the new appointment would also contribute to service development in similar ways. Areas that have been under discussion over recent years as areas for potential development include: the use of technology in therapy; engaging clients to access therapy; equality and diversity issues; psychological coaching and research capability. This list is not exhaustive and we are open to creative and innovative service development.

The Implementation of Computerized Cognitive Behavioural Therapies in a Service User-Led, Third Sector Self Help Clinic. Cavanagh K, Seccombe N, Lidbetter N.
University of Sussex, UK.
Abstract
Background and aims: The efficacy and effectiveness of a computerized cognitive behavioural therapy (CCBT) package, Beating the Blues, has been demonstrated in a large randomized controlled trial and several pragmatic studies in the National Health Service (NHS). The current study tests the generalizability of this finding to the implementation of CCBT in a service user-led, third sector Self Help Clinic. Method: 510 referrals for the Beating the Blues program were received over a 16 month period in routine care. The Patient Health Questionnaire Depression (PHQ-9) and Anxiety (GAD-7) Scales were administered pre-treatment and during each treatment session. The 10-item Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation-Outcome Measure (CORE-OM), Work and Social Adjustment Scale and Patient Experience Questionnaire were also administered pre-treatment and immediately on completing treatment. Results: More than two-thirds of referrals were suitable for treatment and completed a baseline assessment; 84% of these started the Beating the Blues program. Two-hundred and twenty-six people meeting caseness criteria at baseline completed at least two sessions of CCBT. Of these, 50% met recovery criteria at their final point of measurement. Completer and intention-to-treat analysis also demonstrated statistically and clinically significant improvements on key outcome measures. Conclusion: CCBT can be effectively implemented in a service user-led, third sector Self Help Clinic, increasing access to psychological therapies to meet local needs for tier two interventions for depression and anxiety.

Beating The Blues N/Z........
What is the Evidence?Beating the Blues® has been through independent randomised controlled trials. The results of these trials, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, demonstrate that Beating the Blues® is an effective treatment for anxiety and depression, and is better than GP treatment as usual.
RCT evidence has shown that the effectiveness of Beating the Blues® was independent of the severity of depression. People with subthreshold depressive symptoms were also effectively treated.
Beating the Blues® has also been shown to be effective in treating depression in people with physical illness.
A full list of publications is available in the published papers section.
People using Beating the Blues® benefit from 30 additional depression free days in the 6 months after treatment. Patient satisfaction has been demonstrated in an open study, with 9 out of 10 patients indicating they would recommend Beating the Blues® to others and over half finding the programme better than other treatments they had previously received.
