Global Visit -
Friday morning I drove down to visit Global Oil Tools in Houma, LA. First off, that place is in the middle of nowhere. And Yahoo! Maps gave me jacked up directions so if anyone is ever planning on visiting there, let me know, and I’ll steer you the right way. OK, the building is pretty much what I expected after viewing Cleverrox’s pictures. It’s a good size facility.
Upon entering, I was immediately greeted by a nice secretary-type lady who brought me to Brian Barnhill’s office. Brian is the VP of Global, and his family started the business in (I think) 1979. Brian is a super nice guy, and he gave me a tour of the shop. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take pictures so I’m sorry. But check out cleverrox’s b/c that’s exactly what the place looks like. OK, Brian first showed me a room with a bunch of finished tools. He then showed me the area where all the current order tickets are hung on the wall. Let’s just say that business is pretty dang good b/c they actually ran out of room on the wall, and orders were stacked up all over the table at the order station. Brian told me that they have been slammed lately and are having the employees work some serious overtime. (I liked hearing that a lot.)
We then entered the actual manufacturing area. I was shocked because it was humming. There were a lot more workers there than I figured being that it was the day before a holiday weekend. I’d guess there were 20 guys in total. He said only 2 took vacation that day. The company is currently operating 6 CNC machines and 8 manual lathes. A 7th CNC machine will be delivered this week, and I saw the space where it will be positioned. Brian spoke of getting 2 more CNC machines next quarter b/c they speed up production big time, and the business is growing enough to need them. (I’m not sure how this information jives with the recent PR about Global though?) He also said he will have to add on to the building in the near future to accommodate the business' growth. He said they are averaging about $300K/month in revenue, and last month they did $400K. The hurricane slowed them down in the previous 2 months, and they’re still playing a little catch-up. By the way, they ARE profitable.
He then showed me the quality control room. It was a fairly large room with tools very neatly organized on tables, shelves, and cubby holes on the wall. Global is ISO 9001 certified, and it also has an API-14L certification. (It used to be API-14A but it was changed. I haven’t yet been able to research what is the difference, but I’m sure we can look that up.) From what I gathered, the ISO certification is over the business and facility as a whole, and the API is for the manufacturing of individual tools. Being ISO 9001 is a big deal apparently b/c many large companies will not work with you unless you have the certification. Brian said it’s a giant pain in the butt sometimes b/c it requires tons of extra paperwork, but it’s absolutely necessary for them to have it. Back in August Dial told me he was trying to work the logistics of having Grifco’s shop being grandfathered into the ISO certification, but Brian said that hasn’t really gotten anywhere yet.
We then went back to Brian’s office to have a little chat. He first had to sign some sort of payroll check thing, and he rolled his eyes b/c all the overtime has caused his payroll expenses to shoot through the roof. Aww shucks. I started off by asking him about Global’s customers and the countries in which they do business. The two biggest names they deal with are Baker Oil Tools and BP. They currently sell tools to a myriad of countries including Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Columbia, and even Pakistan. They also do lots of business in Texas, California, and Alaska.
I then tried to casually ease in to the Libya venture without much success. It’s apparently a slow moving process with lots of red tape. He said he hopes to begin generating revenue sometime in 2006. The wheels are turning though. He stressed that Lyamec is the real deal. Lyamec’s executives are extremely bullish about Global Libya, and it is definitely laying the groundwork. He said he was very impressed with Raymond (of Lyamec) and what he’s been able to do so far. Brian said there have been lots of sales contacts established, and the $20MM “kickstart” order will be not only for Libya but also for some of the surrounding countries like Qatar. But, he reminded me that the building construction will take time and it’s not as if once it opens, they will be able to instantaneously begin manufacturing all the same tools as Global Houma. I also asked him about the preparation of the technology transfer but wasn’t really able to get a straight answer. He basically just said it was in process, but he wasn’t sure when it would be completed. I may try and contact Lyamec and see if they can tell me. From what I gather, we’re just going to have to be patient with the Libya deal. It may be a while before we start seeing dollars from that one.
We then started talking about the GFCI stock price and how much it sucks right now. He seemed just as frustrated as me about it, but he did say that Global was currently being audited. The auditors were out there not too long ago auditing the inventory. I should have asked who it was and when the actual financials would be audited, but I didn’t for some moronic reason. He gave me his business card though so I may try and call him this week to see if he’ll tell me. He said he thinks the Global audit should be complete by the end of January or February, but please take that for what it’s worth. I am in no way, shape, or form saying they will be done by then.
That’s pretty much it I guess. All in all, I’m definitely glad I visited. I was impressed with the facility, and it was blatantly obvious that those guys are extremely busy. It also helped me feel a little more comfortable with my GFCI investment, and it adds another tangible piece to the puzzle. I ASSURE you, Global is a real company with real people, real tools, and real machines.

Los Angeles, CA, Dec. 23rd, 2005 -- Lyamec Corp. a U.S. merchandising and distribution services firm, completed its acquisition, as stakeholder, in more than 13 power generation plants in the United States. The Lyamec Corporation is expanding its acquisitions and is building a multi-billion dollar portfolio through aggressive mergers and acquisitions in the U.S., Libya, the United Kingdom, and including France. Recent additions into its diversification strategies including its Libya facility in Misurata with Global Oil Tools, Grifco International, Coil Tubing Technologies in pre-construction stage, and newly launched J.V. of Brooks-Line Films as an independent producer and distributor for motion pictures, in the U.S.
“No doubt about it, this is a high stake acquisition and the assets of the plants run more that 17 Billion U.S. Dollars. Granted this is a rare opportunity to get in with other major stakeholders such as Deutsche Bank, Citi Corp, and others alike, but we will be in the long run, in a continued tug of war for a higher share. As difficult as it is to get an entrance into the power industry circle at this level, it was long in planning and I am glad that we are now able to get the opportunity to complete and fund our stake and bring this acquisition into our program.“ Said Interim CEO R.G. Raymond.
In his statement, R.G. Raymond continued by adding, that the latest stake in the power generation plants, which currently supply customers and communities U.S. states and Canada with electricity from clean, efficient, natural gas-fired and geothermal power plants, “ it is our way of saying that we are in the fight for the better of mankind by focusing on our environment and we plan to make significant stake increases in the industry, in the U.S., and abroad.”
Operations and integrated systems of the plants cover major U.S states, and in Canada with further expansions currently planned in Latin America. Products and services provided include wholesale and retail electricity, gas turbine components and services, energy management, and a wide range of power plant engineering, construction and maintenance, and operational services.
