I miss coffee.
Had to give it up. Also had to give up DR. Pepper. It's been years since I had either.
BTW,
Have you heard that Dr. Pepper will be putting the Pledge of Allegiance on their product during the month of September? Sounds Good...until you find out that for fear of "offending" the Pledge will be missing two words...UNDER GOD.

Muell,
While I agree that the electric chair is too mild a punishment far too often, the form you support is too problematic with present technology. Until we can subject the vermin to suffering equivalent to that of their victims without involving another person to do the inflicting, we risk either scarring some individuals permanently or creating more monsters like those of which we are trying to rid ourselves.
Perhaps a return to the medieval forms of execution might be more appropriate, Drawing and Quartering comes to mind (a very tamed down example of this was used in Braveheart) (very tamed down).

I don't know if it's really his or not, thus the use of the word "apparently". However, I don't think he needs the ticket you describe either if it is his. I happen to agree with a number of the things said there. Not everything, but quite a bit of it.

THe Bill of NO Rights
The following has apparently been attributed to State Representative
Mitchell Kaye from GA.
We, the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help
everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid any more riots, keep
our nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure the blessings of debt
free liberty to ourselves and our great-great-great-grandchildren, hereby
try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines
for the terminally whiny, guilt ridden, delusional, and other liberal, bed wetters.
We hold these truths to be self-evident: that a whole lot of people are
confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim that they require a Bill of
No Rights.
ARTICLE I: You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV or any
other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them,
but no one is guaranteeing you anything.
ARTICLE II: You do not have the right to never be offended. This country
is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone -- not just you!
You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc,
but the world is full of idiots, and probably always will be.
ARTICLE III: You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick
a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful, do not expect the tool
manufacturer to make you and all your relatives independently wealthy.
ARTICLE IV: You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans
are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone
in need, but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation after
generation of professional bums who achieve nothing more than the
creation of another generation of professional bums.
ARTICLE V: You do not have the right to free health care. That would be
nice, but from the looks of public housing, we're just not interested in
public health care.
ARTICLE VI: You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If
you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim, or kill someone, don't be surprised
if the rest of us want to see you fry in the electric chair.
ARTICLE VII: You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If
you rob, cheat or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don't
be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place
where you still won't have the right to a big screen color TV or a life of leisure.
ARTICLE VIII: You don't have the right to demand that our children risk
their lives in foreign wars to soothe your aching conscience. We hate
oppressive governments and won't lift a finger to stop you from going to
fight if you'd like. However, we do not enjoy parenting the entire world
and do not want to spend so much of our time battling each and every
little tyrant with a military uniform and a funny hat.
ARTICLE IX: You don't have the right to a job. All of us sure want you to
have a job, and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we expect
you to take advantage of the opportunities of education and vocational
training laid before you to make yourself useful.
ARTICLE X: You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American
means that you have the right to PURSUE happiness -- which by the way, is a lot
easier if you are unencumbered by an overabundance of idiotic laws
created by those of you who were confused by the Bill of Rights.
If you agree, share this with a friend. No, you don't have to, and
nothing tragic will befall you if you don't. I just think it is about time common
sense is allowed to flourish - call it the age of reason revisited.

Dr. Seuss Explains Why Computers Sometimes Crash
(Read this aloud, if you can!)
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted at a very last resort,
and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk
abort, then the socket packet pocket has an error to
report.
If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,
and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the
trash, and your data is corrupted cause the index doesn't
hash, then your situation's hopeless and your system's
gonna crash!!
If the label on the cable on the table at your house
says the network is connected to the button on your
mouse, but your packets want to tunnel to another protocol,
that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the
hall, and your screen is all distorted by the side effects
of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse;
then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'cuz sure
as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang!
When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy in the
disk, and the macro code instructions cause unnecessary
risk, then you'll have to flash the memory and you'll want
to RAM your ROM.
Quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell
your Mom!

ILLEGAL POEM
I come for visit, get treated regal,
So I stay, who care I illegal?
I cross border, poor and broke,
Take bus, see employment folk.
Nice man treat me good in there,
Say I need to see welfare.
Welfare say, "You come no more,
We send cash right to your door."
Welfare checks, they make you wealthy,
Medicaid it keep you healthy!
By and by, I got plenty money,
Thanks to you, American dummy.
Write to friends in motherland,
Tell them come as fast as you can.
They come in rags and Chebby trucks,
I buy big house with welfare bucks.
They come here, we live together,
More welfare checks, it gets better!
Fourteen families they moving in,
But neighbor's patience wearing thin.
Finally, white guy moves away,
Now I buy his house, and then I say,
"Find more aliens for house to rent."
And in the yard I put a tent.
Send for family (they just trash),
But they, too, draw the welfare cash!
Everything is mucho good,
And soon we own the neighborhood.
We have hobby--it's called breeding,
Welfare pay for baby feeding.
Kids need dentist? Wife need pills?
We get free! We got no bills!
American crazy! He pay all year,
To keep welfare running here.
We think America darn good place!
Too darn good for the white man race.
If they no like us, they can go,
Got lots of room in Mexico.

Wow!
Seventy-four words with out a single profanity! A new record! Keep that up and you might actually get my attention!
Of course, you still can't seem to get the hang of the oblique.
And if simply agreeing with one of your "opponents" is dredging up old news then I suppose I'll cop to it. And I'm pretty sure most everyone here recognizes your style of broadsiding your opponent (spam, profanity and whatnot), instead of rationally and factually answering the charges levied against you as a Non-Denial Denial.
Oh, and FTR, the alleged threat against a member of the gentler sex has so far not harmed a single red hair on her head. In fact, we occasionally have exchanged non-combative email since her departure from IH. I wouldn't call us friends, but hate seems too strong as well. As I recall, you have also been offered an olive branch, which you publicly rejected and saw fit to insult me publicly for making the offer. Additionally I'm not the one that is either keeping some very old posts or spending the time to look them up in hope of discrediting my detractor. I simply took the side of someone that you and your cohorts we're harassing.
Now, when you learn to play nice you'll get your action figures back, until then...

PS Nice touch, spamming your alleged rebuttal. Doesn't add any weight but it does increase the volume!
PPS If I make more than 1 post will you continue to spam in triplicate?
Sad to say but it's much worse than that...
When he is unavailable he has his "buddies" do the search for him, and if no one is talking about him, he'll have one or two of them 'start' with an old adversary so that he can jump in. He loves to name call and seems to believe that whomever can provide the grossest, most disgusting profanity wins the "argument".
Oh, OMT while it is OK for his friends to "bring family into it"...NO ONE (and I do mean NO One) should say ANYTHING (and I do mean ANYTHING) about HIS family.
But then he does leave plenty of room to question, aside from his alleged "flaming" skills he demonstrates no special stockpicking ability or technical insight. It would be nice if, just once, he would provide some explanation of the relevance of one of his P&F charts or give some insight as to the process that led to his reasoning for presenting a particular chart. All too often his "stock related" post is a simple P&F chart without any commentary or even an explanation of why one should spend time looking at it...even if one already understands and practices the arcane art of reading P&F charts.
My advice, say something about his Momma and let's all see if Matt has the brass to rid IH of this foul mouthed cretin.

Colt,
My wife loves to talk about how "rabid" Dolphin fans can be. And unforgiving. And downright crazy even.
She calls us spoiled by success (there are a number of teams that have more losing seasons since the turn of the millennium than the `Phins have in their entire history). When I see things like what happened Thursday night (the booing) and hear how fans reacted, I begin to see her point. Any student of the game knows that Fiedler is not now nor ever will be Marino...(no one else will either...ever), but booing him like that 1 week after being cleared to practice again only shows how little about football some people really know. I don't believe that Dolphin fans are any crazier that the fans of any other team. I just think that because of their long term success, they have attracted a class of fan that, while not knowing the why or how success is achieved, demand and expect them to win the SB every year. Some may even believe that `72 will be repeated...by another Dolphins team. God (or the NFL) forbid that should happen or we'll need a new term to describe "fanatic".

Muell,
It was the `72 Dolphins that went unbeaten. The `73 team went 15-2 and won the big game.
Comparing teams from different eras is an exercise in futility. Todays players dwarf the starters on every SB champ from before the early `80's.
But I do have one quibble with the list...
The `85 BEARS????? as the best of all time??? give me a break!!!
what did they do the year before??? the year after??? nothing!
there are at least half a dozen teams that should be ranked ahead of them, for instance every team that won back to back SB's. As much of a Dolphin fan that I am I am still hard pressed to argue the greatness of the Packers in the sixties and the Steelers of the late seventies. But I will say this, were it not for a fluke pass that replays show the knee clearly down before the ball left Stabler's hand... we would not be talking about if there would ever be a SB three peat, the Dolphins would already have done it.
Final note: Marino and the Marks Bros. shredded the vaunted '85 bears defense for 38 points in handing them there only loss... and came within one game of doing it to them again in the SB. What a game that would have been.

Regarding your nick, I associate it with a Vulcan space ship that has a cloaking device. Mixed feelings there as I am more or less a supporter of the Federation.
1. It's a Klingon ship, not Vulcan.
2. Vulcans ARE part of the Federation.
3. Klingons are now considered allies of the Federation though once they were enemies. Granted the Alliance is a bit cantankerous.

It is precisely this future of Islam that is the true root of the problem we face today. More so than poverty, it is this perceived (and in many cases real) "loss of power" by the "old school" militants that drives their movement and seduces young men to their "cause". This has been going on for decades as the extremist religious zealots try to hold on to the "old ways" on which their power is based. That young women and girls are now being included in the movement is both a sign of their desperation and the futility of their struggle against the inevitable. Eventually Islam will reconcile and blend with the modern world. In the meantime, we see that those of it's members that refuse to adapt will go to any lengths and fight to the last. They will never surrender. For them there is only the option of win or die. Because of this mentality they believe we can be beaten because we currently do not fight with the same fervor. What they do not realize is that we will reach the point where we will not only equal their commitment, but we will exceed it by a significant margin. When it comes to defending freedom, we will fight to the last. Our history is replete with examples of men (and women) fighting against tyrants with seemingly unstoppable armies...and defeating those unstoppable armies so completely they were never the same fighting force again.
Make no mistake, our enemies are resolute and resourceful. They neither ask, nor will they give quarter. They will inflict many grievous wounds upon us. But ultimately they will succumb to our overwhelming advantage... We all WANT to be FREE...And we will kill anyone trying to take that from us or die in the attempt. No tyrant living or dead can truly inspire that kind of loyalty.

Mat, Bob, Muell and everyone else...
Moderated boards - I thought IH already had moderated boards! But it appears that you are discussing adding the ability of Moderators to exclude certain users from posting to their boards.
If the board is a stock board I would vote absolutely not. For personal threads (Zeev, Arch, etc) and non stock boards...maybe.
I was under the impression that things were working smoothly under the present system. If that is the case the old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies.
Scoring, ranking, users/boards - If your are going to do it...
DON"T TELL ANYONE WHAT THE BASIS OF THE RANKING IS!!!!!
EVER!!!
Just from what you've said already everyone knows that the more bookmarks they have the higher they'll score!
I personally don't miss the users ranking. I think a better idea would be for Matt & Bob to select a group of 20 boards or so that get promoted in a rotation on the front page. Each visit to the home page would have a different board featured in the feature spot. the IH users should be able to figure out who is a guru and who isn't from there.
My latest idea for being able to know when someone on my favorites list was online or not.
Hey,if everyone agreed with me all the time I'd have no one to "discuss" things with. Besides I did say that it would be OK for there to be a toggle to allow a user to remain "anonymous" as regards online presence. Besides if I really want to know if someone is about I can check to see if they are making posts when I'm online.
BTW, for those slightly less paranoid this feature has been know to get people that have never interacted before to begin exchanging posts. sometimes meeting new people can be a positive thing!
Have a great day!

Earlier today I got a PM that the sender wanted to know what I thought of the restrictions placed on users here at IH. My response was a long winded way of telling them that "you reap what you sow" then while reading my email today I saw this...
Sad But True, please read this and think about what Anne Graham is saying. If you don't have the time to read it now, print and read it later. Something for us to think about.
In light of the many perversions and jokes we send along to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This joke today is not intended to be a joke, it's not intended to be funny, it's intended to get you thinking.
Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her "How could God let something like this happen?" (regarding the attacks on Sept. 11 ). Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said "I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?" In light of recent events...terrorists attack, school shootings, missing children in massive numbers etc."
I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found recently) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools. Also think about the recent Liberal California 9th Circuit Court decision on the Pledge of Allegiance. We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school ... the Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. It must be bad for kids to read. We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about. We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
Then someone said teachers and principals better not discipline our children when they misbehave. The school administrators said no faculty member in this school better touch a student when they misbehave because we don't want any bad publicity, and we surely don't want to be sued (there's a big difference between disciplining or touching, beating, smacking, humiliating, kicking, etc..) We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
Then someone said, let's let our daughters have abortions if they want, and they won't even have to tell their parents. We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
Then some wise school board member said, since boys will be boys and they're going to do it anyway, let's give our sons all the condoms they want so they can have all the fun they desire, and we won't have to tell their parents they got them at school. We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
Then some of our top elected officials said it doesn't matter what we do in private as long as we do our jobs. Agreeing with them, we said it doesn't matter to me what anyone, including the President, does in private as long as I have a job and the economy is good. We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
And then someone took that appreciation of the nude body a step further and published pictures of nude children and then further again by making them available on the Internet. We let it go thereby saying it's OK, they're entitled to free speech.
Then the entertainment industry said, let's make TV shows and movies that promote profanity, violence, and illicit sex. Let's record music that encourages rape, drugs, murder, suicide, and satanic themes. And we said it's just entertainment, it has no adverse effect, nobody takes it seriously anyway, so go right ahead. Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother children to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves. We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
We have our borders wide open for anyone to come here, take what they need and leave. What happened to the days when foreigners actually filled out papers, waited for approval to come here and then did. We do not grow cocaine or heroin in this country and yet it is being grown and imported into this country by three of the four nations that owe us enough money to wipe out the national debt. We give welfare, food stamps, medical aid and an education to those that don't even belong here and let Americans starve and pay higher taxes than anywhere else in the world. But hey; We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with "WE REAP WHAT WE SOW."
Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.
Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.
Are you laughing?

No, it wouldn't tell everyone who was on all the time. It would only indicate to someone who had you marked on their favorites list that you were online when they were online.
If you and I had each other peoplemarked we would have known the other was online when we logged in and checked our favorites page. I suppose there could be some kind of disable feature for the truly paranoid.
BTW, I only peoplemark users that I really have an interest in. Wouldn't bother me if the people that really have an interest in what I'm posting knew if I was logged in to IH at the time or not. I can see the opposing side of this...being stalked is no fun and a stalker could abuse such a feature. However, with Bob and Matt working so hard on getting this "filtering" thing right and the USB idea installed...stalking someone at IH should be exceedingly difficult long before this suggestion gets serious consideration.

Keeping your Cool when it's Hot and Humid
Ok, maybe cool isn't the right word, but you certainly don't
have to be completely miserable during the hot, humid dog days
of summer. After all Air Conditioning for residential use didn't
exist before WWII and folks were moving to Florida (where hot
and humid are the natural order) in droves long before then. So
how did they (and many current residents) tolerate the
conditions without AC? If you get a chance to look at how and
where homes were built in "Old Florida", you'll notice a number
of common characteristics that lead to more comfortable
accommodations.
First, let's talk about "where" these homes were built.
Many structures can be found near (or even on) the water, often
with little or no obstruction to the breezes coming off of the
water. More often than not the structure will be situated so the
water is to the north of the house. This allows the trees to be
placed to the south and west of the building to block/filter the
blazing summer sun. I've been in homes that were sited like this
and in homes sited exactly opposite of this but with nearly
identical construction. The temperature difference is amazing.
Once the site has been selected and the orientation of the
structure decided, how do we best take advantage of our hard
work so far. Again the old timers may not have had our computer
models and information to draw on but they certainly got it
right. The most comfortable houses all share a number of common
construction elements; a tin (or metal) roof with a moderate to
high pitch, porches on at least the south, west and east walls
(if not all 4 walls), breezeways (hallways that allowed breezes
to travel the entire length and/or width of the structure), and
foundations raised above ground. Also, it was not uncommon for
there to be little or no attic space, all rooms were open to the
underside of the roof. Usually a cupola would be placed at the
roof peak.
So what does this do? It takes full advantage of convection. We
all know that hot air rises. What this structure does is,
provide a funnel that takes in air at the coolest possible
temperature, provides a means of quickly heating that air and
then allows the heated air to escape at the highest point in the
building. In simplest terms these houses create their own
breeze! It is not unusual to have a consistent wind "blowing"
throughout one of these houses. By siting the house to draw in
the coolest available air (from over the water and/or through
the trees), it was often possible to obtain temperatures 3 or 4
degrees lower than the base outside temperature. Couple this
with the 3 to 4 degree "feels like" drop in temperature you get
from moving air (you did read that booklet that came with your
ceiling fan didn't you?) and while it might really be 90 degrees
outside, you might feel like it was only 82!
Now, I realize that for you folks (like me) born after WWII
having become accustomed to AC and the comfortable temperatures
it affords, even the situation described above would be
intolerable. But consider this…
Having built a home without any consideration of the site
benefits or hazards as regards heating and cooling. Having no
porches to shield your 20' high walls from the blazing sun.
Creating an attic space that is better at retaining heat than
the lid of a pressure cooker… Do you really enjoy spending $300
a month to keep you comfortable at 72 degrees?
Just employing some of the techniques used by the old timers
could make it easier for your AC unit to get that temperature
down. And lower your electric bill!
It is possible to build an attractive home and get the best
possible heating and cooling efficiency built into the design.

he can just block both of you form seeing and posting to each other...no need for promises...no chance to break your promise either.

Bull,
I will be glad indeed when you will be able to apply that "filter". I never found it necessary to "battle" with JM, since he had more than enough users standing ready to tilt at the windmills he erected. What took restraint was ignoring some of the ridiculous responses he provoked. Mind you, many responding to him did so sincerely and intelligently. But there were a few that entered the battle of wits unarmed.
I most likely would not use a "filter" to eliminate the viewing of posts from a particular user, but I do champion it's inclusion here at IH because so many have need of the comfort an 'ignore' provides.

AK,
As you can perhaps guess, assembling a Database od !/2 a million taglines is not a simple, nor easy, task. Currently, given that it is a spare time project, I expect to have the database online and search ready in about a month. In the meantime I'll whet your appetite with a few from my favorites list.
Note: the @FN@ and @N@ are some markers that will allow one to substitute names or aliases in the taglines.

Charley,
JM is still around and doing well I understand. He and Matt came to an understanding a while back and JM has backed off posting for a while. He promises he will return soon though.
I agree with you about his ability to stimulate a discussion, though I rarely agreed with him and felt he did "cross the line" too often. He does appear to learn and come back better the next time. His personality is one of those that always seeks to "push the limits" and as such he engenders such strong polar reactions. I do hope he will return soon. Though I think it might bode well if he abandoned the JM persona and established a new one. Some of his troubles were due to the baggage that has become associated with that name. Of course he should never reveal the connection to make such a switch work.
In nearly thirty years of BBSing, chatrooms and message boards it has been a rare event that I've requested the termination of another users account. Only 4 times in that span. You have to go pretty far out there to make me want you gone. JM never got that far out. Bob never got that far out. Strangely enough those that did...were booted. Not so much because I asked, but because those I asked to boot were so bad that admins had no other choice. Currently, there is no one posting to IH that I would ask Matt to can their account. It's amazing what you can learn from the folks posting here.

Hi Sara!
As chairman/moderator/#1 Dragon here at The Aviary, I propose that every Friday be Sprint Bashing day. Posts that hoist them on their own petard are both welcome and encouraged.
BTW, I have nothing good to say about Sprint.
