This board is a total waste of time. I'm done posting here. I'd recommend the same to others. Let them sit and bash among themselves. They'll get tired of being ignored and move on. Maybe in a month or two it will be worth visiting again. Otherwise, see ya!!
Looks like someone needs to dump, no matter what the price. I may jump in for a few thousand if it gets any crazier. I'm hearing H&H is doing well - which is somewhat confirmed by RAW's posts. Woodland Hills is also still doing good business. Mountain View also has to be close, and they have a great location. Hopefully the dumper will be done before they announce MV. This is crazy.
Are you kidding? Hoping for another dip? It's been in a dip for months and months. Pre-split price is under 40 cents. Just buy it if you want more.
I've heard the soft opening will be June 17th. They are doing something for the media too. Not sure if they are the same. Either way, it should be open to the public the end of next week.
It's also nice to see some postings on the blog. They have been very quiet the past few months. H&H opening in June should mean additional PR.
This is my favorite part of the PR....
"Over the 40 years I've been in the restaurant business I have been waiting for someone to do what uWink has done," said Mr. Leovich. "I believe uWink's business model and technology will have an enormous impact on the future of food service. It is very exciting to be associated with the caliber of individuals that Nolan has assembled at uWink, and also to be part of such a meaningful contribution to the restaurant industry.
uWink is starting to sound exciting again.
uWink has been saying Hollywood and Hyland would open in May. Well it's two week until May.... any guesses when they'll open the doors to the public????? I'm guessing May 9th!
It's good to see some worthwhile posts again! Thanks!
From the sound of it.... Hollywood and Hyland in early May, Mountain View in June.
Hollywood and Highland will likely open sooner because there is less changes needed to convert to the uwink concept. I've heard Wolfgang Puck spent a couple million $$ building out Vert. It also has a fabulous kitchen.
The place in Mountain View needs more work, from what I hear. I'll try and find out a little more and post again.
Google has a street view for that location.
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=401+Castro+Ave,+Mountain+view&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl
Choose street view and look south. The building has a round entry. If you zoom in you can read the Roadhouse sign.
My understanding is uWink will be on two floors.... but I'm not 100% sure.
My thoughts on your questions.....
At what point does uWink become a growing, profitable company?
>>>They are growing right now. They continue to make improvements to the existing restaurant that are adding revenue. It appears that they will open two new, much larger, restaurants in the next few months. They are selling software and appear to have something going on in Miami and Canada.
How many restaurants does it take to become profitable?
>>>uWinkn has stated in the past, that they will be profitable with three restaurants. Again, they'll have three in the next few months.
I htink the real money is in the franchises.
>>>It's all real money. uWink's plan is 1/3 company owned and 2/3 franchises. A big unknown is software sales, which will be very profitable - though we have no idea how significant.
There willd efinitely be a pop-up when they open the new restaurants, but if they are not profitable.. I submit IMO it can't be sustained. It will fall back once the momentum and hypo wear off.. the only way it will continue to grow is if profitability is ensured into the future.
>>>Again, with three they believe they will be profitable.
This would have to come primarily from company-owned restaurants at first.
>>>Agreed, but the software revenue is unknown.
No boubt they have franchisees (ors?), but likely none of those contracts are binding.
>>>We don't know this, but they've only signed one so far so.....
If the concept company-owned stores don't make it, the franchises mean nothing.
>>>Yup. No one will buy a bad concept. But the revenue's are saying it is a good concept, the first store is doing very well in a poor location, they keep adding things to get people in the door, people who have been there think it's fantastic, as do most of the reviewers. I think they have proven it will work. Now they need to execute.
If the company-owned stores are self-sustaining in their own right, they franchises ar what will propel this stock onto a major exchange and maybe make us some real money...
>>>Agreed 100%
You asked "what things are they doing that you I know?"
Well, as Hogan's Heroes' Sgt. Schultz was known to say......
I see NOTHING! I know NOTHING!
Knowing something would be against the rules!!!
I spoke with someone the other day who participated in the last offering. The justification for the $2 price (and the warrent) was that that is what the investors were willing to pay for one restaurant. You could also say the market is saying one restaurant is worth around $1.35. One 3500 square foot restaurant in a not-so-great location that is.
We could argue that opening a 2nd should double the price - maybe more since it will be larger. The 3rd should then result in triple the price from here.
Seems logical that we could get back up into the $4 or $5 range by early summer.
That would be fantastic!!!!!
I suspect uWink will start work on both locations as soon as they are able. Hollywood and Highland on March 1 ??? and Mountain View, well, I don't know. Hopefully around the same time. I hope they announce when they start construction.
My guess is we'll see H&H open mid-April, say the 18th, and Mountain View, May 16th.
I'm saying they are not talking about things that have happened. You assume nothing is happening because you are not hearing about it. I'm saying things are happening and they are not talking about them.
We can't really say "That said, management's been talking a good game, but producing very little" since they're not telling us what they are doing.
We didn't know about them going into Wolfgang Pucks space - until a poster here found the story. They didn't announce it. What does it mean? I think it means once they take posession, assuming after the Oscars, it will be turned into a uWink fairly quickly. I'd guess late April or early May opening. Though I'm speculating here, because they haven't told us what is going to happen.
We didn't know they were working on making their software available to others - until they told us.
My point is, uWink is not talking, so we don't really know what's going on.
BUY ALERT: uWink Inc. (Nasdaq: UWKI.OB) BUY 1/4 Position 1/15/08 Around $1.25
http://peakstocks.com/buy-alert-uwink-inc-nasdaq-uwkiob-buy-14-position-11508-around-125
You think they raised $10 million from "us investors?" Sorry. We're all little guys. Institutions bought most of the offering.
Couldn't resist.... sounded like it connected!
Oh, and the bashers are out showing us how smart they think they are.
You are obviously not paying attention. The market is getting hammered. The market makers are discounting all the stocks because everyone is scared. The weak hands are folding.
PKG, if you'd actually do some DD, you'd find that things are going very well at uWink. Per their filings and announcements, they have the money to open all their planned restaurants, their existing restaurant is doing very well, they're constantly updating their software to improve the experience, the updates are working, their software is available to third parties, Hollywood and Hyland and Mountain View appear to be just around the corner, Canada and Miami are, well, I don't know, supposed to be happening. IMO, franchises will move in a big way once uWink gets the next two up and running.
My view on things are: Things are good at uWink. The market sucks. Everyone is scared. No one is buying. The stock tanks.
Meet the Oscars, "an exhibition of 50 golden statuettes" is being held in the former VERT restaurant at Hollywood and Hyland.
The Oscars are scheduled for Sunday, February 24 - which means that uWink should be able to take pocession and start work on their Hollywood and Hyland location by the end of February!
Here is a link to the Oscar site.....
http://www.oscars.org/80academyawards/meet_the_oscars/index.html
Reprising one of its most popular events, the Academy will unveil to the public the actual Oscars that will be handed out at the 80th Academy Awards ceremony. Beginning February 1, visitors will be able to view and photograph the 50 golden statuettes – and even pick one up – on the fourth level of the Hollywood & Highland Center.
Also on display will be the Oscar® designated for the recipient of this year’s Honorary Award, legendary production designer Robert Boyle; the Oscars given to director Frank Borzage and screenwriter Benjamin Glazer for their work on 7th Heaven (1927); and the miniature Oscar presented to Judy Garland for her outstanding performance as a screen juvenile in 1939, the year she appeared in The Wizard of Oz.
“Meet the Oscars” offers visitors an early opportunity to find out more about the Academy Awards and the dozens of artists and craftsmen whose outstanding film achievements in 2007 earned them nominations from their peers. Admission is free.
On February 23, the statuettes will be moved under heavy security into the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, where on Oscar Night® they will be placed in the hands of the winners. The 80th Academy Awards ceremony will be televised live on Sunday, February 24, 2008, beginning at 5 p.m. on the ABC Television Network.
Great post uNintendo! Seems to validate uWink's restaurant plan to meet people's desires for more social, game related experiences. I think the restaurant/bar concept provides an even better social experience!
uWink has done a good job of creating ways to get more people into their restaurant - and increase revenue. They have done two expansions. The first was the patio on the side of the restaurant, and recently the patio behind the restaurant. These added between 75 and 100 chairs, and revenue.
The new ROOM games are also increasing traffic on the traditionally slow late nights during the week. I've heard from a number of people that Trivia Thursday is a blast, and the crowds are reflecting this - they're even having to kick people out at closing time! According to the blog, we can expect a number of other "ROOM game" nights - and even more revenue.
I've also heard uWink is pushing private parties - kinda like Chuck E'Cheese - except for a much broader demographic - and way better food. These will, again, increase revenue during the normal slow times most restaurants experience.
uWink is working hard to develop a product with a broad appeal that will have people in the restaurant spending money ALL day, every day. Add in the additional revenue streams from games, merchandising, advertising, etc., we should see very high revenue per square foot - which should mean stong franchising sales in the future.
The restaurant people I speak to were surprised that uWink sold any franchises so soon - they thought it would take success at 2 or 3 restaurants before people would bite. uWink is saying we'll have 2 more open in the near future.... hopefully this will get the franchising sales moving again.
uWink Live!
I don’t know if you’ve heard but for a while now, customers have been playing games against other customers and packing the place on Thrusday nights until closing time! We call these ROOM GAMES! We have an MC moderate the competition – and the winners get $25 gift cards to uWink!
Currently we have uWink Trivia Live and Picture Perfect available for room game competition. We’ll be adding more in the next two weeks so stay tuned.
Seriously, fun doesn’t get any better than this! So come on down and check it out! The competition starts at 9 p.m. The fun starts when you arrive!
Since you did not answer my questions, we have to assume the answers to both questions are no. You have NOT been to the restaurant and you have NOT met anyone associated with the company.
Which makes me believe you have NO credibility when it comes to uWink.
Have you met Nolan or anyone else involved in uWink?
Have you been to the restaurant hexonx?
uWink is his family - in case you have not been following. This last round of financing was funds along with friends and family. The previous rounds of financing were mostly friends and family. I don't agree with what you said about Nolan, but if he takes care of friends and family, he also takes care of us, the stockbrokers.
It doesn't sound like you've been to the restaurant. Maybe you should go and then give us your opinion.
I also expect that uWink is working on the logistics for the franchises. Nolan has done this before, so has their head of development - the guy from California Pizza Kitchens.
uWink's website is at www.uwink.com. Spend some time there and you'll get a feel on where they are, and where they are going.
Also check out http://blog.uwink.com/ for lots of good stuff.
Today, as I write this, they have one restaurant open. It's located in Woodland Hills, California at the Promenade. It's not a very good location but is doing strong numbers. The restaurant's phone number is 818-992-1100 , give them a call once in a while and ask them how long a wait for a table. Weekends are usually an hour or two.
They have announced they will be opening 4 company restaurants in 2008. The first, IMO, will likely be in Mountain View, CA - which is the Silicon Valley, and near Google's campus. This is a great location.
The next to open, IMO, will be at Hollywood and Highland - which is home to the Kodak Center where the Oscars are held every year. This is also a great location. http://www.hollywoodandhighland.com/
They have announced plans to open a restaurant at the Hughes Center in California, and one in Dallas. I don't know anything more on these.
They have one franchise agreement with a group from Miami. They have not said much about this lately but I hope to see something soon.
They have a joint venture agreement with a group from Canada. Again, not hearing much but I hope to see something on this soon too.
You can read the press releases about the software venture. I have never talked to the company about that and don't know anything more than what was published.
I've been in this stock for a number of years.
Do your own DD. Visit the restaurant and see for yourself.
I agree, they need to be uWink the restaurant first. I'm sure they are working very hard on getting the new stores open. Hopefully, we'll hear something soon.
uWink is shaping up to be an interesting stock.
First, they are a restaurant stock with a "hot, new" concept. They will generate revenue from food and alcohol plus other sources like games, advertising and merchandising - which set them apart from the typical restaurant. Combined with good food, I'm expecting great things from the restuarant side of the business.
But wait, we found out this week they are also a software play. The software they developed for their restaurants also has a maket beyond the uWink bistro. How big? We'll just have to wait and see.
uWink's terminals are quite unique - and I suspect uWink will make them avaiable to the software customers as well. uWink won't be manufacturing them - but likely will generate some revenue from hardware sales.
Sounds pretty good. But there's likely more. uWink is developing a social restaurant concept - could you combine this with a social internet experience? I think so.... but we'll have to wait and see on that one.
IMO, if uWink can execute, this stock has the potential to absolutely explode!!!!
uWink video from their website....

Not sure if it has been posted before...
Good one Netman!!!!
Hollywood and Highland really needs to be open by Sunday, February 24, 2008 for the 80th Annual Academy Awards presentation - which will be held at the Kodak Theatre!!!
A friend is in Mountain View today and visited the restaurant that is being converted to a uWink. He said the location is fabulous. Downtown Mountain View, in the heart of Silicon Valley. I think he also said it was near Stanford U - not sure about that - not a great cell connection.
I'm traveling today and was reading the US Today. The entertainment section they had a story on the Spice Girls - they were hanging out at the lounge of the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood and Hyland - where another of uWink's restaurants will be located!
Restaurant #1 is doing great in a not-so-great location. How will uWink do in a top notch location? How much media exposure will celebs or Google brass hanging out at uWink bring in?
The offering has taken some of the steam out of the stock, OK, it took all of it out, but I think things are going to change. They have money, they have hot locations, Alissa is working hard on press events and this (IMO) is going to rock again really soon.
It's all about location, location, location. Sounds like they have great locatins for #2 and #3!!!!!!!!!11
UWink didn't raise $9 million from retail customers. I suspect the vast majority of the funds came from institutions. I don't think they're trying to simply get a free warrent out of the deal. They beat them down and ended up with a cheap share and warrent.
That might not be true for some of the retail buyers. They might have already owned uWink and are swapping old shares for new shares and a warrent. They probably thought they could buy into the offering using "other" money that they don't want in the stock and once the offering closes to sell their old shares. The stock was above $2 so it sounded like a good deal. Now it's less so they might be nervous and taking what they can get. I wouldn't think there would be alot of this so this should not last.
We should see some press in the near future. They've had a few months were they couldn't announce anything but material events - so there should be news and press in the works. I also hope to see a PR Blitz, but would love to see some consistant news and press moving forward.
Nolan has been developing this concept since the Chuck E' Cheese days. CEC worked but it was not the social environment Nolan was envisioning. Talk to him and he'll tell you uWink has been his dream for many, many years. It's also the culmination of many of Nolan's ventures coming together.
Entering the market is also not as easy as you make it sound. Copying hardware might be easy, but recreating the uWink experience will take a long, long time.
