Looks like you're off the hook. :)

CHKP meets all around and is getting killed in pre-trade. Another case of selling the news, I guess.

Mahal...How could anyone resent visiting the Taj? The most remarkable building I've ever seen, I shot 70 rolls of film and still didn't do it justice.
Sandy
Lee...I'm seeing the normal robin's egg blue background with black print.
Sandy
Thanks to you, too, pm.
Sandy
Thanks, titan, for the backup site.
Sandy
Can anyone post for me the S&P and Naz futures at this moment? The site I use is downand I don't have a backup.
BTW, has anyone else noticed that everything is tanking after earnings no matter the content of the report? I read that as the market having already baked in all of whatever good news/numbers could be released, leaving nowhere to go but down regardless...a pretty bearish condition. Seems we're pretty close to the rollover everyone's been awaiting.
Sandy
Yes, Rick...a "limit stop" gives one the ability to set a "spread" for the stop where the "stop" # activates the stop and the "limit" number sets the minimum amount for a transaction. However, be careful that the spread is large enough to preclude your getting "jumped" which would result in your getting stuck in the position.
Sandy
Lee...Just read an interesting article in the current (July 14/21) in The New Yorker magazine regarding the Red Sox versus their nemisis the Yankees, and the Sox' hiring last year of Bill James whose focus is on non-traditional statistics...he's the guy who produces the Historical Abstract collection of stats. Interesting stuff.

The best time to buy lobster is during a Red Tide when everyone shuns shellfish, but most don't know that lobster isn't affected by the tide's organisms. I once bought (in Boston) 25 pounds @ 55 cents a pound and had lobster salad all summer!

As long as it's Olde Home Week, I lived in Mendham while I taught at West Morris (my 1st career), then in Bernardsville when I started my 2nd career. Most folks think NJ is an armpit, but most folks only know the view and aromas from the Turnpike.
Sandy
...this week *felt* alot like last year, late august timeframe.
Sorry, TJ, but that just isn't my recollection. This week's daily average for the Naz was 1.9bn shares and at least 2 days were well in excess of 2bn. The ball is in your court: prove me wrong and show some August '02 volume data that comes close to that. I'm too lazy to dig it up, but my gut tells me you can't do it. Frankly, I'm amazed at the number of 2+bn days we've had this summer...far in excess of what I've experienced over the past 5 summers. Until this year, "Sell in May and go away" has been a viable Street credo. This year, it would have been a mistake.

D2...FWIW, an actual example of how stops can help. Wanted to get the Bu$$ near the day's lo and entered @ 18.52 w/ a stop @ 18.49. Was stopped out (actually, got 18.5 execution), then re-entered @ 18.36...now, holding over the w/e with a better entry by 16 cents.

Security breach in South Africa: an uncredentialed stowaway rode the Press Corps' 747 and bus right to Bush's hotel before being discovered. The inmates have the keys!
Sandy
Indeed, Babylon, where one places the stop is a whole 'nother discussion...I used the 50 cents only as an example and wished only to present the importance of stops as a concept. For my own part, I play it much more conservatively. I try to make entries at support, or resistance points and most often place the stop < 10 cents from the entry...the theory being that if the stop is reached, it means support, or resistance has been violated and further erosion is more than likely and a better entry (or, an entry for the opposite direction from the original intent) inevitable.
Sandy
D2, with all due respect, you may want to consider using stops with your entries rather than depending on doubling an underwater position. After all, it doesn't take many plummeting doubles to do serious damage to an account (I learned this the hard way...the very hard way)...and the essence of trading is capital preservation before anything else. For example, if you'd implemented a 50-cent stop with your 35.5 entry, you'd have been stopped out w/ a 50-cent loss and able to re-enter ~33+...then, by the time the price gets back to your current buy-in average, you'd be in the green by a buck and a quarter (minus the 50 cents, of course). I know, I know...Zeev breaks the "rule" all the time, but he does invoke disciplined exits when his "box" gets violated and that approach works for him. For most of us, though, doubling a losing position should be considered an absolute no-no.
BTW, did ya notice VTSS's move today...and what volume! I love it when a plan comes together.

Re. the YHOO cc currently in session:
Terry Semel speaking: strongest revenue quarter in history. Marketing services and fee growth was balanced. Revenues up 42%, with double-digit increases in three revenue lines. EBITDA was $97 million for triple-digit year-over-year gains.
Active registered users now 116 million, up from 83 million. ARU's consume two times as many services as registered users. Paying relationships are 3.5 million, up from 2.9 million in Q1 and 1 million one year ago.
Talking about BT alliance, and some of the growth areas for Yahoo!, such as Personals and Yahoo! Search. International now has four consecutive quarters in operating profitability. Semel continues to talk about opportunities in consumer-packaged goods, and the movement of traditional advertising to the Internet.
In edit, more:
CFO babbling since then, really impressive co. magins/& grwth wise regardless of expectations and valuation which can argue about w/ yhoo forever.
Total revenue was at the high end of management expectations. Global marketing was $219 million, up 44% year over year, growth that is positive and accelerating.
YHOO gaining share in overall Internet pie and in sponsored search. Sponsored search revenue doubled year over year. Fees grew 43% to $70 million, grew 20% sequentially.
Paid relationships are at 3.5 million, already at the low end of February guidance. CFO is raising guidance for paid relationships now, but it may not be material to revenues. Operating cash flow came in at $92 million.
free cash flow was (trailing) $261 million

The entry notwithstanding, an entry with no stop is a very dangerous venture.

I figured ANY number would get sold...been jus' too much hype and all baked in IMHO.

MSFT announcing they are eliminating employee stock options programs.

The assumption in your evaluation is that "everyone and their sister" got in to EBAY @ ~120...and that they all will accept a break-even exit. Seems a stretch.

Pace is ~ 1.8bn on the Naz.

Still using my own Spotmatic gear purchased in '69...good quality never dies!

MERQ looking pretty weak today, and CHKP can't even get green.
Sandy
Gd, I wouldn't recommend any of your choices for DT. Go w/ a direct access broker...many have already been mentioned. However, if you like to trade in mega-thousands of penny stocks, steer clear of IB since the penny/share commish will eat you alive.
Sandy
which one is the best?
For what kind of trading?
Sandy
Welcome to direct access trading, TG.
Sandy
A split decision, actually. In the med school case, affirmative action was upheld, whereas in the ungergrad school case, descrimination will not be allowed. What the heck is that all about?
Sandy
Hehehe...so I noticed after I responded to your post. Gold notwithstanding, the north Georgia mountains is a beautiful part of this country and the trout fishing, I'm told, is quite good (also, largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie and brim). I used to attend a dozen-or-so weekend bluegrass festivals every summer and my absolute favorite was in Dahlonega, 3rd weekend in June...went to 23-in-a-row 'til they moved it to a much less desirable site in Cherokee, NC.
Sandy
mlsoft...In Dahlonega, GA, an hour north of Atlanta. It's the site where gold was first discovered in this country back in the early 19th century.
Sandy
OT: TG, that was surely the case when gold was $30/oz, but since domestic regulations outlawing gold sales were eliminated and the price zoomed into the 100s of $$, panning in local rivers and streams has become a very popular hobby in GA. True, there are still no commercial efforts, but that doesn't preclude the little guys making a buck, or two in the wilds. When our state house dome was re-gold-leafed back in the '80s, it was all done with Dahlonega gold...no small amount, either, I should say.
Sandy
Several years ago, I met a county sheriff from Dahlonega whose hobby is panning for gold. At the time (~10 years ago), he'd accumulated 3 mayo jars full of gold dust over a 20-year period. "My retirement account", he said.
Sandy
Cashing in on stops is part of there game.
It's part of the game we all play, SS. That doesn't negate the benefit of stops.
Sandy
SS...Complaining that "stops are useless" is like complaining 'bout the diagonal red mark a seatbelt leaves on your chest after you're in a wreck.
Sandy
The only expectation of +11 that I saw was from Briefing.com. Anyone putting faith in that # was bound to be disappointed. Concensus (and actual, as it turn out) was ~+4.
In edit: i.e., I bought the dip.

Old "news" during AH last night.
Sandy
Boing sure is getting slammed these days...lost another major ($5bn) commercial bid this morning...Airbus the winner, again.
Sandy
Nice play, Z...got partialed @ 17.12/.14, myself, and now tryin' to figger our where those 17.94 transactions are taking place.
Sandy
At first, I thought Ellison was doing it only to hinder the JDEC deal and wasn't interested in buying PSFT at all. I now think the $19.50 offer is a serious offer, but is prolly contingent on JDEC's not being a part of the deal at all...and I'm guessing there's a 50/50 chance of a deal being consumated. Those aren't the odds, though, that would entise me to make a play for the PSFT premium.
