LIQUIDITY
We are not going to have a rule that requires that any stock you pick have X amount of shares traded on a daily average or X amount of dollars traded on a daily average.
However... YOU NEED TO RECOGNIZE THAT YOU ARE AT A GREAT DISADVANTAGE IF YOU PICK STOCKS THAT HAVE POOR LIQUIDITY!
Here are the two rules in the Ibox that pertain to this issue. Both were in place in PSL3. Very few people had any negative consequences from these two rules, but I want to make sure I highlight them ahead of time so that everyone will take a look at the liquidity issue before they pick their stocks and before they go to make a transaction and realize they have problems. After all, we look at the liquidity before we buy a stock in real life. You should do so here as well.
15) The 15% rule is designed specifically to discourage picking stocks that have low liquidity. If, after a sell or freeze, a stock trades below the 15% parameter on the first trade of the next day on no news, the person will be given the option by the end of the day to take the lower opening price. They use up a transaction either way - whether they opt for the lower price or not. Thus risk is associated with shooting the moon on a potentially bogus trade. The same rule applies if, after a buy, a stock trades above the 15% parameter on the first trade of the next day on no news, the person will be given the option by the end of the day to take the higher opening price. This will also use up a transaction - whether they opt for the higher price or not. In any case, if the next trading day goes by and no trades have been made on the stock, the trade does not go through and no transaction is charged to the contestant.
16) You cannot make a transaction on ANY stock that had no trades the day you did it. The reason is because any stock that doesn't trade on day 1 is far more likely not to trade on day 2. If a person is "trapped" by a stock that never trades, they will be less likely (hopefully much less likely) to pick such a stock in their pick six.
If you have questions about these two rules, please ask. But, no matter what, I hope it is clear that they discourage the picking of stocks that don't have trades every day. If you pick a stock that rarely moves, you are putting handcuffs on yourself. But, it is your choice.
PSL contests are designed to reflect real life as best as possible. Despite the fact that the vast majority of stocks that we own have enough liquidity, I'm sure almost all of us own one-to-several stocks with poor liquidity. And, in real life, maybe we can wait them out. But, in PSL, you may not have time to wait them out. Better that you pick stocks that you can freely trade if you so desire.

VMC PSL 3 Indexes (Revised 9/7/06)
Commentary: We have numerous indexes to present this contest, actually many more then the last contest. So without further ado let me give a brief explanation of them. The The Top 22 Index is made up of all stock being picked at least 5 times in the contest, this index is equally weighted. The Top 250 Index, is also equally weighted, and measures the average performance of all the stocks picked in this contest (Our stock universe). The Average Portfolio Return, measure the average performance of the 89 portfolios. These indexes or averages should be familiar to everyone, as I have presented these in past contest(s).
Now new indexes to be presented: Average Wildcard Index this index measures the average performance of the 42 wildcards chosen in the contest, this index is equally weighted. Average Non Wildcard Index This index measures the average performance of the 208 non-wildcard entries, and this index is also equally weighted as well. Average Wildcard Index (Weighted Average) this index only difference from the Average Wildcard Index is this index uses a weighted average approach. What This basically means is there are 47 units in this portfolio, obviously the majority of stock only have 1 unit, but a stock like ERHE.ob has 3 units because it was picked 3 times in the contest. Average Non Wildcard Index (Weighted Average) this index only difference from the Average Non Wildcard Index is this index uses a weighted average approach. What this basically means is there are 481 units in this portfolio, obviously the majority of stock only have 1 unit, but a stock like EZM is weighted much more heavily and has 23 units because it was picked 23 times in the contest. Finally, we get to the Average Portfolio (Original) the only difference between this index and the average portfolio return is it excludes the impact of transactions, meaning if no one could make transactions (Which is obviously not the case) this would be the average portfolio return. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask, and I will answer them to the best of my ability. Hope you enjoy the info.

Dickmilde, Great Catch. It did not affect 10bagger (The only one who ever owned SLP at any point in the contest) because as you can see from the i-box he already traded out of SLP way before it ever split. If he owned it I definetly would have caught it. The only thing that needs to revised is the indexes post and the individual stock returns. I'm sorry for the mistake, but what can I say I told you those thousands of posts with the all is just my opinion, and granted I could always be wrong would come in handy sooner or later. LOL. Fortunetly, the mistake was caught thanks to you and it really didn't have that much significance in the contest, as it didn't affect the team/individual competitions. And for good measure. All is just my opinion, and I could always be wrong though.
It looks like the SLP stock split may not have been accounted for in the Individual Stock Returns shown in post 1597.
http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/060814/20060814005482.html?.v=1
SLP is a significant holding in my real portfolio.
Correcting this might raise 10 bagger's credibility slightly

Stan:
You are welcome. I'm not sure facilitating is the right word at the moment. I still haven't done the PSL4 IBOX, but hope to do it tonight.
Len
Thanks SSK and Len for facilitating the PSLs.. I know it takes a lot of time to maintain this... and it's nice of you to do this for the benefit of the whole group... I learned a lot by watching other make their stock picks and trades...
Stan
He must have a connection to the SEC (just like in the movie wallstreet where Bud Fox got a conenction at the airport)...
Stan
Thanks KIK for the acknowledgement.
I hope to continue to compete and raise the bar for everyone... jk... :) IMO it will only go towards the mean (market returns plus a couple points), but I will try my best...
Nice work Snakes, no trade 29%.. that is awesome..
Stan
KIK- A great perfomance in a down market. We were all just fighting for second place. Good luck in psl4 and in your real portfolio.

~Congrats KIK! A huge thanks SSK and Len
for providing the contest, I truly enjoyed
it and learned alot...even the bear that
got me thanks you and everyone else.
PSL4 REMINDER:
The deadline for entry into PSL4 will be Friday, September 15th at the market close.
Obviously PSL3's results were considerably below PSL1 and PSL2. However, it is still a fun opportunity to compete against other VMC'ers.
All the rules in PSL3 will be in force for PSL4. Three transactions allowed - including freezes, doubledowns and trades. We decided to implement one addition only - the ability to short an index. I posted this on the PSL3 board http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=5644 already, but the text of the post is below.
If you are concerned about the markets, it will be possible to have a very conservative portfolio in PSL4 with the ability to flip to 100% long during the contest. If you think you will have trouble picking 6 stocks, I have the perfect solution below.
The PSL4 Ibox probably won't be compiled for a couple more days. However, here is the link. Please go ahead and make it a favorite so that you can keep up with what is happening leading up to the September 15th deadline.

PSL4 - One Modification - SHORTING:
We are very happy with the way the rules are set up for PSL3. It took three contests to get it just right, but we think we just about have it.
SHORTING
We decided to allow one thing that we have not allowed in the past. Part of the reason for this is because there has been more discussion of shorting on VMC than in the past. But, the main reason is because the markets have weakened from previous PSL contests and our group performance in PSL3 showed it.
Thus, we think it makes sense to allow selected shorts as one option for the WILD CARD.
In PSL3, the WILD CARD could be a stock that had no earnings or no reporting. That is still true. If you want to make that your WILD CARD, you can. However, if you want to make it a short, you can do that instead. Theoretically, it could be a non-earner and then you could trade it for a short later.
SHORT DEFINITION: The shorts that will be allowed, will be "market shorts - ETF's" as opposed to individual stock shorts. The only ones we know of are below:
Nasdaq 100: QID
S&P 500: SDS
S&P MidCap 400: MZZ
Dow Jones Industrial Average: DXD
These are all double-beta shorts against the corresponding index.
----------------------------------------
One more thought on this. Let's say you are fairly negative on the markets. Some of you may feel you have a hard time coming up with 6 long positions before September 15th for PSL4. However, by allowing a short position, here is an example of what you could do.
Pick 3 longs, GE, 1 short, 1 cash. You cannot double down for two weeks, but after two weeks, double down your GE into cash and you have 3 longs, 2 cash and 1 short (which is a double-beta market short). As you can see, this is a VERY conservative position.
Now, let's say as the contest goes on, you decide you are more optimistic. You still have two transactions left. You could, hypothetically, trade your 2 cash positions into a new long and you could either trade your short into a new long or double it down into one of your other 3 longs. Either way, you are back to 100% long.
-------------------------
The short position simply gives a person more flexibility if they are either 1) Not optimistic on the markets or 2) Cannot come up with 6 longs out of the gate.

VISIT THE PSL CHAMPION'S BOARD:
KIK has written his summary of the contest. It, along with other facts, are in the IBOX.
You can view the former IBOX contents after PSL1 and PSL2 by going to the bottom of the IBOX and clicking the appropriate links. After each contest, the winner will be immortalized in the VMC Champions Board Ibox until a new winner is crowned.

R59:
"Nobody is quicker (on average) to report on a 10Q filing than you are!"
Yeah, I agree with you on that! I don't know what he has going, but he must have a T1 line directly to somebody! What happens when he has to take a crap?????
Also, SSK definitely deserves credit. Even a good percentage of the stuff I post comes from his database.
Len
SSK--wanted to add my voice to those saying a big THANK YOU for all the work you do to make the contest results visible.
You too Len...
Knowledge: Congrats on your well deserved and impressive lopsided win in PSL3 .... I've benefited many times from your posts on the VMC board, and your promptness in reporting on earnings releases is uncanny. Nobody is quicker (on average) to report on a 10Q filing than you are !
SSKILLZ1: great job with all the statistics, and of course thanks for all the hard work managing the contest and providing daily updates. I'm planning to spend some more time scrutinizing the results in the coming week.
I think we all benefit from these contests and I'm already looking forward to PSL4 !
Thanks to all well-wishers...
My victory was on the back of just two good trades. Out of CKGT (up 100%) into a double-down on TELT. And then out of TELT (up 55%).
Both stocks are down sharply from where I sold, so not alot of glory in the big picture. Despite my win, I still like the format of PSL1 better. My hat's off to snakeman84, who was up 29% in the contest without any trades. I'll be focusing on his (her?) PSL4 picks when they come out next week. Also congrats to Stanu for his near-50% average over three PSLs -- that's an impressive track record!
Thanks Len, I didn't realize that until you pointed that out...
I was thinking along the same line earlier about average returns and I am thinking how those returns must continue to drop (normalize or move towards market average plus several points) as we continue going to PSL4,5,6 and so on so forth..
and also thinking probably after psl 4,5,6 we probably will see who are the real good (and consistent) stockpicker.. didn't realize that I'm up there (and ahead of Mr Sheep)
Again thank you Len for the recognition... that surely boost my confidence and hope that I can continue to perform well and consistent in the next PSLs...
Have a good long weekend!
Stan
Stan:
Maybe the single most noteworthy credit should go to you.
You rank not only #1, but the ONLY person ahead of Mr. Sheep in average total returns for those who have participated in all three contests!!!!!!!!!
1. STANU78 49.61%
2. MR. SHEEP 46.55%
Len
Congrats KIK, c1001, otcbargain, and team 2 (nsom, len, ereh, apish)...
and glad to see the average PSL return over the last 3 PSL...
and I'm surely glad to make it to the big board (top 10) with all the other amazing stock pickers..
Stan

1) CL001
2) MIKE056
Commentary: as you can see this is a pretty long list. LOL. Congrats to CL001 and MIKE056 to be the only two to have all 6 units positive at the end of the contest.

KIK, you da man. I'm just happy to be sitting at the final table.
GLTA
Congrats to Knowledge and to everyone who came out in the top 10.
Even though I ended up in the pentultimate spot, I still had a lot of fun.
Thanks to Lentinman and to SSKILLZ1 for another great contest.
See you here on the 18th!
bbtocs
LittleJohn I'm sure there are others but TSSW.ob and SIMC are two good examples of that.
MOVI was exciting during the contest...What other companies had good run-ups before they fell from grace during the contest period?...Just some general names,,,no official stats needed...Seemed to be a lot of volatility during this contest period...LJ
Congrats Knowledge! A great performance.
yield
and a big think you for SSKILLZ for putting it all together
Average Non-WildCard Index vs. Average Non-WildCard Index (Weighted Average)
The only difference between the two indexes, is the average Non-wildcard index weights things equally. And the weighted average weights a stock that was picked by 3 people, gets weighted 3 times, where a stocks that was only picked once gets weighted only once in this index. As we can the weighted index (Stocks that were picked more turned out to do better as a whole).
A positive differential means us weighting certain stocks over others has helped. A negative differential means the stock we picked more didn't do as well as a group.

KIK lived up to his moniker. Winning by a margin of 16.52% over the second place contestant is a noble feat.
I wonder how long that record will last? The increasing flexibility in the contest should allow for a wider range of results, but I think 16.5% will probably prove to be tough number to beat.
Congrats KIK!
Thanks lentinman and SKILLZ.
Congratulations to everyone who participated, "22 MR. SHEEP 3.98%"
That's extremely impressive considering 89 total players partcipated including the hybrid of the top picks "MR. SHEEP"
Also consider that from rank #32 down finished negative, that's a tough stock pickers market!
Personally, I felt like I accomplished something just by being able to finish in the green, especially after my poor decision to double-down WEGI and double-down HEC, I'd have been better off just not using the trades option at all, but that's where in the risk lies...
How did stocks do for the three contests by there purchase price.
This is a collective look of the three contests results merged together.

Commentary: As we can see if we look at the three contests the $5.00-9.99 Purchase Price stocks are doing the best, this will be very interesting to see the trends after numerous contests in my opinion, although it might not mean much I still like the info. And I hope everyone likes it too.
Congrats KIK! I am particularly impressed considering how a lot of us struggled.

As you can see those who have traded more have done substancially better in this contest. We know that the trades on average overall help us, hence it is no surprise those that trade more will do better. As for the exact, whether someone on average is better off if they used all 3 trades over 2 trades, 2 trades over 1 trade, and so on. Although it has been proven to be the case in this contest, we need many more contests to see if there is really a significant trend here or not in my opinion. Only Time Will Tell.
