...In the frenzy to virtualize servers, companies are forgetting to virtualize an important and yet critical component of their infrastructures: the network addresses and I/O of the Ethernet and Fibre Channel cards on the physical servers that host virtual machines (VMs)....
Virtualized Ethernet and Fibre Channel cards or their I/O is easy to overlook.
...Administrators may correctly assume that there is ample bandwidth on the server's Ethernet and Fibre Channel cards to support the normal workload of the multiple VMs it hosts. The problem is that VM workloads can become abnormal. Spikes in read or write I/O on one VM may immediately adversely affect the I/O performance of other VMs hosted by that physical server. Equally problematic are backups, especially full server backups. Backing up a single VM can quickly congest network pipes and degrade the performance of other VMs on that server....
There are two new ways that companies can use to address this issue:
One is to use intelligent Ethernet network interface cards (NIC) and Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBA) that create virtual NICs and virtual HBAs.
...These cards assign specific virtual NICs and virtual HBAs to each VM, which then logs into Ethernet or Fibre Channel networks using these unique IDs. Administrators may then set policies that limit that VM's bandwidth consumption based on these VM identifiers.
The other option is to eliminate these cards entirely by using InfiniBand.
...InfiniBand virtualizes Ethernet and Fibre Channel I/O, creates virtual NICs and HBAs like intelligent Ethernet and Fibre Channel cards, and delivers more than twice the effective bandwidth of either Ethernet or Fibre Channel cards....
Server virtualization makes sense from a lot of different perspectives,
...but congested networks can quickly mitigate whatever initial benefits virtualization delivers. By using intelligent Ethernet or Fibre Channel cards or virtualizing their I/O with InfiniBand, companies can reap the full benefits of virtualization without some of its unexpected surprises....

WAAV and RocketStream Demonstrate Ability to Double Cellular Upload Speeds

WAAV and RocketStream Demonstrate Ability to Double Cellular Upload Speeds
Thursday November 15, 8:00 am ET
Upload Speeds Average 1.2 Mbps Over Two EV-DO Rev A Connections
CAMBRIDGE, MA and SANTA BARBARA, CA--(MARKET WIRE)--Nov 15, 2007 -- WAAV, Inc. and RocketStream, Inc. (OTC BB:VOYT.OB - News) today announced they have achieved average file upload speeds of 1.2 Mbps over two EV-DO Rev A network connections. A 31 MB file accelerated by the RocketStream(TM) data transfer acceleration software suite through WAAV's Airbox X2(TM) multiple-connection cellular router was uploaded in only 3 minutes and 19 seconds.
The ability to upload such huge files in short periods of time opens enormous opportunities for large file transfers from remote locations and moving vehicles. Users have been limited to the average upload speeds of 400-600 kbps over today's EV-DO Rev A networks. The AirBox X2, WAAV's multiple-connection cellular router, is now able to double that upload speed when used in conjunction with RocketStream's proprietary PDP file transfer acceleration technology. Media companies and large enterprises with remote file upload needs, have expressed significant interest in such a solution.
The AirBox X2 establishes two EV-DO Rev A cellular Internet connections and balances outgoing traffic over both interfaces. The RocketStream Protocol is able to simultaneously utilize both of these cellular connections to double the upload speed. The combination of the Airbox X2 and the RocketStream software will be demonstrated at WAAV's booth #931 at the Government Video & Technology Expo 2007 in Washington, DC, Nov. 14 - 16, 2007.
Availability:
The AirBox X2 is available now directly from WAAV and authorized WAAV distributors nationwide. The RocketStream file transfer acceleration suite is available directly from RocketStream and from a network of value-added resellers in North America, Europe, and Asia.
Testing Information:
Testing was performed on the Sprint EV-DO Rev A network in Cambridge, Mass. Similar results would be expected in other Sprint EV-DO Rev A coverage areas.
About WAAV:

..."WAAV®, formerly Omniwav Mobile, debuted the first broadband router for use in a fast moving vehicle in 2004. The AirBox® cellular router enables broadband Internet connectivity in remote or mobile environments, and turns any vehicle into its own Wi-Fi hotspot.
WAAV has continued to innovate with enhanced software, remote management, and GPS fleet tracking.
In 2007, WAAV debuted the AirBox X2, the world’s first multiple connection cellular router. The X2 is designed for wide bandwidth applications like real-time video streaming or use in buses and mass transportation to accommodate many users at once. It also provides redundancy and the combined coverage area of multiple cellular carriers.
WAAV's Breakthroughs
2004 – WAAV (formerly Omniwav Mobile) debuts the first broadband router for use in a fast moving vehicle, the MBR-1100. This EV-DO cellular router turns any vehicle into its own Wi-Fi hotspot.
2005 - WAAV releases the second generation cellular router, the WavBoard. With all of the great features of the MBR-1100, the smaller WavBoard includes an optional GPS receiver for fleet management.
2006 - WAAV introduces their third generation cellular router, the AirBox CM3. The AirBox CM3 packs all of the features of the WavBoard into a smaller form factor at a significantly lower price.
The AirBox CM3 can connect to HSDPA, UMTS and EV-DO Rev. A networks in addition to EV-DO Rev. 0. AirBox CM3’s are currently being used on many different cellular carriers around the globe.
2007 – WAAV introduces the AirBox X2, the first cellular router with two simultaneous connections. Two connections can be used on the same provider or separate providers for increased bandwidth, coverage area, and reliability. "...

NOTE: This is not a recommendation to buy shares of Netflix, but a look at the potentials of a business model that includes Watch Now instant-viewing. MLD38
In the section, "A fix of Netflix" in TMF's "5 More Unloved Growth Stocks" By Tim Beyers November 29, 2007
http://www.fool.com/investing/high-growth/2007/11/29/5-more-unloved-growth-stocks.aspx
Near the bottom, it says ..." Bear in mind that this isn't a list of recommendations. Instead, I offer these stocks as candidates for further research."...
Included in section, "A fix of Netflix"
..."the other TV stock on our list, Netflix, better for two reasons:
Capital requirements.
Cash flow.
What I mean is that Netflix, because of its lower capital requirements, produces a ton of free cash flow that is being used to fund growth and protect its franchise."...
and includes:
..."thanks to its emerging Watch Now instant-viewing service, I see a far richer future for Netflix than others might. Here's why:
IPTV, which is tech-speak for delivering the Internet to your TV, is real and being delivered by AT&T.
Chip makers such as Sigma Designs (Nasdaq: SIGM) are making it easier to create set-top boxes that deliver IPTV signals.
Roughly half of American households have broadband access today, and the number is growing.
See the pattern here?
The pace of innovation ensures that you'll someday be broadcasting Web content via your TV.
What you'll broadcast remains the question.
I have a radical idea.
How about TV shows?
How about any TV show, any time of day or night?
That's what Netflix is in position to provide.
Right now, for example, you can instantly watch all 23 episodes of the first season of Heroes.
If only Netflix could deliver new movie releases this way, eh?
Yeah, but don't worry too much about that. DVDs won't go away soon, and the company's rent-by-mail business should provide years of free cash flow."...
And includes this on improving the Watch Now service:
..."Expect CEO Reed Hastings to put that to work on improving the Watch Now service, to the point that you'd pay a small fee to stream your favorite shows in the format that best suits your TV, budget, and tastes -- with or without ads, high-definition or regular, unlimited-menu or pay-as-you-go.
Doesn't that sound like a business model worth owning?"...
TO singh & others: NOTE from MLD38
Just to repeat something I have written before:
My mission, now as in the past, has been to try to provide research type posts to help individual investors and traders.
Since 1999, my posts have tended to be informational in nature with links, when available. I believed then, as I do now, that the Internet is a great place for individuals to use for researching and sharing information to level the Investment Field against the deep-pocketed monied crowd.
Long ago and faraway when I first started financial research, the material was usually out-dated and found on the dusty bottom shelves of libraries by candle light. OK, maybe candle light is a stretch.
The Internet is much better and faster.
However, please do not rely on Internet message boards or Internet articles for advice or clarification. If you invest or trade on information from the Internet, and the material is incorrect or a hoax or etc, you have no recourse, except to eat your loss.
If you have questions, you should consult with your financial advisor, tax advisor, brokerage firm, etc. Discuss your strategy with your broker. If you get incorrect advice, then you will have a way of receiving a refund.
However, I do think the Internet has finally opened up enough to allow a large flow of great ideas from various individuals and the tide may have turned in our favor, so we do not have to rely on biased and spoon-fed items from the media and their talking heads.
Good Luck to all who post and lurk on this board. MLD38

If I see something on one of the many message boards I scan for ideas, I might bring the C/W items back to this board, but not as often.

Actions have consequences
Here is a quote from the end of Greg iles novel, The Quiet Game:

Video Prophet, Fat File, Ubiquitous Courier
Is it dot-com blather, a folly, stock swindle, etc?
NOTEs: I do not have a position in AKAM, but thought these might be of interest. While Video Prophet (very long 04.23.07 Forbes Cover and story) & Fat File Paradox & Cyberworld's Ubiquitous Courier, are mainly about AKAM, the history and detail reveal the struggles involved in startups and shine some light on content delivery, etc..
Video Prophet
On The Cover/Top Stories by Scott Woolley 04.23.07
http://www.forbes.com/free_forbes/2007/0423/068.html
Starts off:
..."Paul Sagan has ridden hard over the wildest extremes of the Internet economy. In 1999 he stumbled into a $700 million fortune--on paper--by joining a brilliantly conceived startup called Akamai Technologies, which provided superfast digital delivery services to dozens of new Web sites. Then Sagan watched as the dot-com boom blew up. Akamai's Web site customers went bust, and Akamai plunged toward bankruptcy. Shareholders filed ten lawsuits, alleging a stock swindle."...
And then came the worst blow of all:
....Daniel Lewin, the brilliant young founder at the heart of the company, was killed on 09/11/01 by terrorists. He left a wife and two young sons. He was 31....
Later in the article, you will find:
..."Danny" is Daniel Lewin, Akamai's founder, an MIT-trained mathematician who conceived the algorithms and concepts that would form the business. On Sept. 11, 2001 Lewin, Akamai's chief technology officer, boarded the American Airlines (AMR) flight from Boston to Los Angeles, on his way to a business meeting. Lewin settled into seat 9B in business class. One row ahead of him, on the other side of the aisle, sat Mohamed Atta.
A pair of hijackers got up from their seats in the second row and forced their way into the cockpit. They were followed by Atta, the only trained pilot in the group. No one knows for certain what happened next, but according to the 9/11 Commission, Lewin--a former commando in the Israeli army--likely tried to fight four hijackers singlehandedly, unaware of a fifth, seated directly behind him.
Flight attendant Betty Ong radioed the news of Lewin's battle to stunned co-workers on the ground: "Somebody's stabbed in business class." Half an hour later, at 8:46 a.m., the Boeing (BA) 767 slammed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Daniel Lewin left a wife and two young sons. He was 31.
Paul Sagan, like the rest of Akamai's devastated employees, was left to question whether Danny Lewin's company had any chance of surviving his murder. Akamai had $101 million in cash, enough to last just over a year. Its stock, down 99%, was in danger of being delisted from Nasdaq. Lewin's vision of Akamai remaking the Internet suddenly seemed more like hubris than genius. "People told us what we were doing was both crazy and impossible," Sagan says. "It was a horribly dark period."
Yet through it all Sagan and others stubbornly clung to their belief in "the Big Idea"--Danny's idea"....
Includes this: (re was it dot-com blather, a folly, stock swindle, etc?)
..."With startups going broke by the hundreds, Sagan realized Danny's grand vision sounded to the world like all the other dot-com blather. At best Akamai looked like the folly of academic theorists who were not as clever as they thought.
At worst it looked like a stock swindle built on a mountain of mathematical nonsense. The ten investor lawsuits accused the company of defrauding the public during its wildly profitable public offering, as well as of other misdeeds.
In the week following Lewin's death, Sagan spoke frequently with Conrades and Leighton; with Lewin, they always had run Akamai by committee, says Martin Coyne, a board member. "They were and are inseparable."
With Danny dead, they considered giving up. The trio began to ask one another hard questions. Their current customers were disappearing: Could they be replaced? After some debate each of the three agreed they could.
"Look around the room," Conrades said. "Do you believe we have good people?" That one was easy.
Then Conrades asked the most important question: "Do you still believe in the Big Idea?"
Danny's now ridiculed vision of building an infinitely powerful Internet--could they make it real?
Conrades, Sagan and Leighton looked one another in the eye. Despite the trauma and turmoil that Akamai had endured, they still believed.
And there was this: "We had to do it for Danny," Sagan says"....

Sidebar: A More Clever Internet
http://www.forbes.com/free_forbes/2007/0423/068a.html
Akamai is founded on the notion that the Internet’s basic rules are too dumb for the modern age and need improving. The company’s algorithm writers constantly suss out new ways to get digital data where it’s going in a hurry.
Flash Crowds
BEFORE: A video of a cute tiger cub is loaded onto a computer in India. Word of the video spreads virally around the world. Requests to see it swamp the computer in India.
AFTER: Akamai’s computers deduce where copies will be wanted, make copies of the video and store it around the globe. The more popular it becomes, the more copies Akamai makes.
Fat File Paradox
BEFORE: A user in L.A. requests a movie from New York. Under the Internet’s archaic rules, after sending 128,000 bits of data the computer in NYC must wait for a confirmation it all got to L.A. (In the old days that rule kept the Web from getting clogged with misdirected bits.) Now, an hourlong, billion-bit movie might require 8,000 back-andforth acknowledgments. Even though the data travel most of the way at the speed of light, this can still add a delay of half an hour.
AFTER: Akamai sends the movie between two of its own servers, ignoring old Internet rules and zipping across the country in seconds. The movie travels only the last few miles on the public Internet.
Line Cuts
BEFORE: When a tsunami snapped undersea cables in Asia recently, regular Internet traffic stacked up. For a week 25% of packets sent to Asia were lost.
AFTER: Akamai’s complex algorithms deduce optimal routes, learning which paths to avoid. Even after the tsunami, fewer than 1% of packets sent via Akamai failed to reach their destinations in Asia.

starts off:
..."This rant is about virtual software and hardware, but there's nothing virtual about the big profits we've already made in this space! And those very real profits are nothing compared to the ones we're going to make.
We just received the results of our latest ChangeWave Alliance survey on the virtualization phenomenon. While I won't bore you with the technical details, I can tell you that what we're seeing is very similar to Apple's (AAPL) breakout thanks to the iPod and its move to Intel (INTC) processors.
includes:
....And the Winner Is …
Storage software. With all of the virtual servers running at the same time, you'll need real-time storage.
In this space, we've added a new stock to our ChangeWave Investing Buy List that you definitely want to own. It's a company with around an 18 P/E, and its new product deals purely with the virtual world. It's just getting started, and hasn't hit its earnings flow at all, but it will be in a big way in '08 and '09.
We're buying this stock under $24, and we think it's worth $40 to $44.
There are very real profits to be made in the Virtualization Wave.
This is one of those S-curve-type changes, which you don't see very often. The last big one we had was the Apple Wave. And this wave is going to be even bigger because it's a much broader market.
Bottom Line: It may be virtual, but the profits are very, very real....
10/23/07: Comcast Admits Delaying Some Traffic

Comcast Acknowledges Delaying Some Internet Traffic, Denies That It Amounts to Blocking
NEW YORK (AP) -- Comcast Corp. on Tuesday acknowledged "delaying" some subscriber Internet traffic, but said any roadblocks it puts up are temporary and intended to improve surfing for other users.
The statement was a response to an Associated Press report last week that detailed how the nation's largest cable company was interfering with file sharing by some of its Internet subscribers. The AP also found that Comcast's computers masqueraded as those of its users to interrupt file-sharing connections.
Internet watchdog groups denounced Comcast's actions, calling it an example of the kind of abuse that could be curbed with so-called "Net Neutrality" legislation. It would require Internet providers to treat all traffic equally -- as has largely been the case historically.
Comcast has repeatedly denied blocking any Internet application, including "peer-to-peer" file-sharing programs like BitTorrent, which the AP used in its nationwide tests.
On Tuesday, Mitch Bowling, senior vice president of Comcast Online Services, added a nuance to that statement, saying that while Comcast may block initial connection attempts between two computers, it eventually lets the traffic through if the computers keep trying.
"During periods of heavy peer-to-peer congestion, which can degrade the experience for all customers, we use several network management technologies that, when necessary, enable us to delay -- not block -- some peer-to-peer traffic. However, the peer-to-peer transaction will eventually be completed as requested," Bowling said.
The explanation is not inconsistent with the AP's tests. In one case, a BitTorrent file transfer was squelched, apparently by messages generated by Comcast, only to start 10 minutes later. Other tests were called off after around 5 minutes, while the transfers were still stifled.
Comcast's statement did not mollify Markham Erickson, executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based Open Internet Coalition, a group that counts Google Inc. and eBay Inc. among its supporters.
"What applications work, what don't, and at what speeds? Only Comcast really knows," he said. "Comcast is making arbitrary bandwidth allocation decisions slowing use of basic (programs) without being clear to consumers what they really get when they buy a broadband connection."
The Electronic Frontier Foundation confirmed the AP's findings with its own tests -- including spotting forged messages sent by Comcast's computers to shut down connections.
While BitTorrent connections may eventually resume after being shut down by Comcast, other file-sharing programs like Gnutella may be more severely affected by the interference, preventing any kind of upload, said Peter Eckersley, staff technologist at the online civil liberties group.
"Characterizing that as delaying traffic I think is ... a stretch. What they are doing is spoofing traffic or jamming traffic," Eckersley said.
"I think they are trying to create as much confusion about this story as they can because they've done something really scurrilous and out of line for an ISP, and I'm sure they've been burned by the community's reaction to it," he added.
Applications like BitTorrent and Gnutella are often used to illegally share copyrighted files, giving the applications themselves an image of shadiness. Recently, however, several companies have started using BitTorrent to distribute legal files.
However, users also reported Comcast blocking some transfers of e-mails with large attachments through an application that is fully in the legal sphere: Lotus Notes, an IBM Corp. program used in corporate settings.
Kevin Kanarski, a network engineer for a major law firm, noticed the disruption in August and eventually traced the problem to Comcast. But he got the cold shoulder from the company's customer support department.
On Tuesday, Bowling acknowledged the problem, saying it was unintentional and due to a software bug that has been fixed. Kanarski said transfers started working again last week.
"These are the kinds of software bugs you get when you have ISPs messing around with hacking techniques to get some applications running on their networks and not others," said EFF's Eckersley, who is himself a Comcast subscriber.
"The bottom line is that if ISPs start regularly engaging in conduct like this, then kids in their dorm rooms or small startup companies that are trying to develop innovative new uses of the Internet are going to have to come and get permission from players like Comcast to get their protocols working properly," Eckersley said. "That kind of veto over innovation would be very bad news."

Rob75, RE: NXXI
Date 2007-10-02
"Nutrition 21 reported fiscal Q4 (June 30) revenues of $12 million, a 380% jump over the year-ago number. For the fiscal year, NXXI reported total revenues of $42.1 million compared to $10.7 million last year. Net loss for fiscal year 2007 was $19.1 million, compared to a net loss of $10.3 million in 2006.
Nutrition 21 has grown revenues in each of the last four quarters, excluding a one-time charge in the fourth quarter. And with the investments made during this past year and the recent $17.75 million financing, NXXI is in the strongest position it's ever been to build its brands and to generate sustainable growth in 2008 and beyond.
Bottom Line: Nutrition 21 begins fiscal 2008 with a clean slate, having transitioned from an R&D-focused company to a marketing-driven one selling branded consumer products targeted at diabetes, cardiovascular health, obesity, joint health and other age-related ailments.
At less than $1, NXXI is a very attractive buy. We're looking for the company to transform to profitability in the second half of 2008."
NXXI is currently sitting at its 52 week low.
