An Old Lady's Poem;

"See Me":

What do you see, nurses, what do you see?

What are you thinking when you're looking at me?

A crabby old woman, not very wise,

Uncertain of habit, with faraway eyes?

Who dribbles her food and makes no reply

When you say in a loud voice, "I do wish you'd try!"

Who seems not to notice the things that you do,

And forever is losing a stocking or shoe.....

Who, resisting or not, lets you do as you will,

With bathing and feeding, the long day to fill....

Is that what you're thinking? Is that what you see?

Then open your eyes, nurse, you're not looking at me.

I'll tell you who I am as I sit here so still,

As I do at your bidding, as I eat at your will.

I'm a small child of ten ....with a father and mother,

Brothers and sisters, who love one another.

A young girl of sixteen, with wings on her feet,

Dreaming that soon now a lover she'll meet.

A bride soon at twenty -- my heart gives a leap,

Remembering the vows that I promised to keep.

Am twenty-five now, I have young of my own,

Who need me to guide and a secure happy home.

A woman of thirty, my young now grown fast,
Bound to each other with ties that should last.

At forty, my young sons have grown and are gone,

But my man's beside me to see I don't mourn.

At fifty once more, babies play round my knee,

Again we know children, my loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me, my husband is dead;

I look at the future, I shudder with dread.

For my young are all rearing young of their own,

And I think of the years and the love that I've known.

I'm now an old woman ...and nature is cruel;

'Tis jest to make old age look like a fool.

The body, it crumbles, grace and vigor depart,

There is now a stone where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass a young girl still dwells,

And now and again my battered heart swells.

I remember the joys, I remember the pain,

And I'm loving and living life over again.

I think of the years ....all too few, gone too fast,

And accept the stark fact that nothing can last.

So open your eyes, nurses, open and see,

Not a crabby old woman.... look closer....see ME!!

Potential


What is potential?
He asked himself,
Will it bring you,
Joy and wealth,
Is it anything,
Inside itself?
Untapped, he had it,
Unpursued,
Lying dormant,
And subdued.
Would the greatness,
Bestowed on him,
Be discounted blessings,
Or idle whims?
Inside, he knew,
His limits were none,
But somehow he failed,
To get the job done.
Come time unstopped,
And wisdom with age,
So young by days,
So far from sage.
Potential was always,
A great excuse,
For all his talents,
Not put to use.
The one who never tries,
Never fails and also dies.
The one who dared,
To take the risks,
Can’t blame himself,
For what he missed.
So many great men,
Turned to sheep,
Potential buried,
Way too deep.
What separates,
The special few,
Who realized,
All they ever knew?
And died fulfilled,
With no regrets,
Of dreams and goals,
They never met.
No English word,
Can pinpoint it,
Not born of brawn,
Or even wit.
Potential,
Is an empty hope,
Of dreamers,
Dangling from a rope,
Clenching tight,
To where they are,
Hanging from,
A distant star.
God bless the few,
Who find their way,
To their potential,
Everyday.
Cursed are those,
Who’ll never know,
But still they die,
Late for the show.

Pieces of You


Never the whole thing,
Only a piece,
Attached are no strings,
And no unwanted lease.
You want it all,
And I want it more,
No way you can fall,
With your face on the floor.
Pieces of you,
Is all you will give,
What can I do,
To help you live?
What can I do,
to help you smile,
On the inside too,
If just for a while?
I want to know,
If I can stand close,
To the beautiful glow,
Of your Holy Ghost.
Pieces of you,
All over the floor,
A heart torn into,
That beats no more.
Hurt by the world,
And the price that love cost,
No longer a girl,
Her innocence lost.
One piece of you,
Is worth so much more,
Than everyone else,
I've been living for.
I'd give all of me,
For one piece of you,
Just so you could see,
That this heart is true...

Thanks so much SUBBlime...you have know idea how much it means just to know that even one person can get some meaning and substance from my poems. I have been writing them off and on since an early age. In all honesty, many of them were written during my college days when I was really into drugs.

I like my poems but have never really had a chance to share them with many people. I have a bunch more and many were wasted on girls who didn't deserve them...lol... Most of the romantic ones were given away with no copies made unfortunately...

I have some more that I will post a little later...

Pebbles in the Sea

He holds the pebble
Tightly in his hand,
Ready to launch the stone,
His feet planted firmly in the sand.
Without a thought
He lets it rip,
And counts the times
His rock does skip.
One, two, three…
No four,
Much better this time
Than before.
Now his rock has sunk
To the bottom of the sea,
But the ripples remain,
Carried by destiny.
He squints and tries
To make them out,
His ripples fight the waves,
But soon get tossed about.
He smiles and laughs…
The ocean thinks its won,
But deep inside his pocket
The pebbles go on and on.
How long can ripples really last
When tossed about the sea?
He doesn’t care about these things,
He’s got eternity...

Notable Ruler


The air is ruled by many,
But music doesn’t care,
It dominates opponents
And reverberates the air.
Heard but not seen,
Its message can be kind or mean.
But when it reaches into your soul,
All your little hairs stand up in pairs,
And give a great ovation
To the force that rocks the nations.
Its rhythm does intimidate,
The strongest foe has met its fate.
When aligned as music’s ally,
Even weak ones become great.
If only for a moment,
Until the music ends,
Reality’s intermission
Will soon begin again.

Mind the Gap


This dotted line do I connect,
And bridge the gap of mind and neck.
It has its charm the way it lies,
With simple beauty and disguise.
Perception fills the gaps for me,
So obvious, they all must see,
Each eye creates reality.
The secret lies within the gap,
Religion forms a living map.
Without a map we travel blind,
From dot to dot along the line.

Lonely Flowers


I bought some flowers today,
An urge that I let have its way,
A ritual performed each waking day.
This bunch was free,
I’m a regular see,
This is the lucky bunch for me.
So beautiful, so many colors,
Beauty longs to share with others.
Beauty giving all its got,
The man that lady luck forgot,
Temperate blood that once boiled hot,
His flowers settle in his pot.
Tomorrow brings another day,
The sun will take the clouds away,
And paint skies blue that once were gray.
New flowers grow a different way,
Tonight, he tucks his flowers away.

He ties his shoes,
Same as before,
They wait for him,
Beside the door.
He ties his shoes,
Like yesterday,

The exact same way.

Left foot first,
And then the right.

He ties the shoes,
That hard work bought.

And clears his mind,

Hazy Days


I used to hate raindrops,
‘Till I learned what they were for,
See if it was sunny all the time,
We simply would get bored.
We must have rain and gloomy days,
That bore us to a hazy daze,
For you cannot reach eternal bliss,
If the stormy days you always missed.
Who’s happier,
the one who survived the storm,
Or the sun burnt man who’s always warm?
From every good thing,
We sometimes need a break,
To have true appreciation
That you have no need to fake.

Eviction Notice


That energy that roams around,
Is never lost
And seldom found.
Where do you hide,
When hearts stop
And bodies die?
You steal the twinkle from each eye,
From every body that you try.
Unseen by any human eye,
Energy conserved,
You cannot die.
Where do you go
When body and mind
Declare that its eviction time?
If words that Einstein
Spoke were true,
That energy in me and you,
Can never die, but only move,
I hope my next place has a better view.

These words I write
To decimate,
The empty void
That I do hate.
The constant buzzing
In my ears,
Silence,
Is the lure of fears.
I shout
Out loud
To make a noise,
Uneasy stillness
Words destroy.
My black ink

Fights desolation
That endures.
An echo rings
Throughout the land,
Saneness

An Ordinary Day


Looks can be deceiving,
As it was this one fine day,
When I arose, it all seemed normal,
Breakfast, same as yesterday.
The sun rose in the East,
And was heading toward the West,
When the hum flew out of humdrum,
A magic sunbeam hit my chest.
You probably don’t believe me,
I figured just as much,
There was no one there to witness,
Which is normal of my luck.
But I know in my heart,
That it was magic, yes indeed,
You probably don’t believe me,
As this story you do read.
But don’t be surprised,
While on your merry way,
If a magic sunbeam hits you,
On an ordinary day.

A Guest Uninvited


A guest uninvited,
Appeared at my door,
He ate all my food,
And then asked me for more.
He comes unexpected,
With often no warning,
Like a thief in the night,
With no trace in the morning.
He’s silent, and he always creeps,
Upon the victims that he meets.
He discriminates,
Not in the least,
A guest uninvited,
Never late for his feast.
Have you prepared
A chair for him,
In case he blows in
With the Wind.
You’ll see him once
And never again.

Birds Outside My Window


Their whistles,
Call me from my sleep,
Whistles mixed,
With cackles peeps.
Inclinations,
First of violence,
Wretched birds,
Who murdered silence.
Laying there,
Not yet coherent,
My intentions,
Now apparent.
All at once,
A change of heart,
A stone melts,
And falls apart.
Blessed sounds,
Of family love,
Calls of life,
From mother dove,
Fill my soul,
And make me high,
Wondrous sounds,
Invade the sky.
Chirps so proud,
Yet gentle, though,
God protect these
Birds outside my window.

Salty mist,
Kiss the fish,
Who ride the wave,
Against God’s wish.
Rebels,
Traveling in schools,
Pride defeats,
The elder’s rules.
From the deep,
The big fish rise,
Cocky once,
The old school dies.
Ignorance,
With no more chances,
One wrong turn,
And death advances,
To the deep,
The big fish swim,
Pride provides,
Their meal again.

I speak,
As I always have,
My words wander
Into the dark,
So lost,
They dissipate in air,
Each vain attempt,
A deaf remark.
What purpose
Does this voice serve,
Too many times
Did I embark,
Growing tired,
I close my lips,
My tree,
Now covered in its bark.
It grows,
A little tougher now,
My words
Push us apart,
The end
Of the beginning,
That was not allowed to start.

Be still and quiet my son,
I know its hard at first,
The squirming of impatience
Is what bothers most the worst.
Like a doctor and a patient,
Who quietly awaits his birth,
The world makes much more sense,
When you understand its worth.
There’s a time for everything,
Silence…
Meditate my son.
If you succeed in this game
There are prizes to be won.
Inner peace and clarity,
Knowledge wrought with joy,
Faithfulness is also one,
Gifts I give to you my boy.

Just Another Game?


She spoke of us
In future tense,
And at the time
It all made sense.
And after less days
Than a week,
He knew their outcome
Now was bleak.
She tossed him
For a lover past,
Deep down he’d known
It would not last.
But still,
He had ventured on,
He’d known the risk
All along.
He thought,
That after all the games,
And arguments
And calling names,
That finally
They saw eye to eye,
Instead she smiled
And passed him by.
I do not hate her,
Or do I blame,
That girl who
Moves on just the same.
But still,
I cannot understand,
What led her to
That other man?
She smiled easily
And let go of my hand.

Perilous Runner in the Race Unfinished


With youth comes unbound energy,
Unset, unsure, but truly free.
The fool chased time,
And time chased back,
Whose eyes were closed
While years still stacked?
Is wisdom worth the price of youth?
The wisest owl would tell the truth,
He’d give it all to go again,
And face the wrath of childhood sin,
It all looks different now to him,
His age reminds him of an end.
So young, once, and so naïve,
Time comes uninvited,
A guest that won’t leave.
The wisest man has once cursed time,
Maturity planned by design,
He fooled himself for quite some time,
Reality now grips his mind.
A new incentive now in place,
To meet each second face to face,
He reinitiates the race,
Each step reminds him of the chase.

Soul Vision


A sight I do not claim to know,
A first time meeting for us both.
New ground for the eyes and ears,
The soul’s familiar glow I hear.
I’ve met this soul
Somewhere before,
Through one of life’s familiar doors,
Walks a stranger nevermore.
There’s something that I cannot place,
It goes beyond the mortal face,
On the tip of my tongue I do taste,
Unfamiliar familiarity,
Unbeknownst my soul did see,
The soulmate for life that she would be.

Soul Food (Nourishment for the Neglected Third)


The soul, our most important essence,
We do not celebrate with presents.
Body, worshiped as a shrine,
A golden calf made up your mind.
The most important of the three,
We neglect what eyes can’t see.
Only when in harmony,
With chorus wrote for you and me,
Does perfect peace exist in three.
A Dichotomy exist for most,
Two out of three is all you boast.
What will replace the Holy Ghost,
If we neglect him as our host?
A host that we must entertain,
With effort we might ascertain,
Assertion to a higher plane.
A triangle that has two sides,
The weak link snaps with changing tides.
A trinity we must uphold,
Enlightenment worth more than gold,
A diamond made of patient coal.
Unflawed in its many angles,
A rock built strong upon triangles.

Take a Number


I’m more than a dot,
On life’s timeline,
Transversing space,
With my soul, not mind.
More than a number,
Absorbed in a stat,
Above demographics
And marketing acts.
Lies beget lies,
A fictional fact,
Thoughts remain stagnant,
Reflexes react.
Bombarded by words
Only poets revered,
Once passionate words,
Become slogans for beer.
Our conscience unconsciously
Takes a back seat,
Our filter removed,
We gulp and don’t chew,
And gluttons continue to eat…
The wise gnaw the bone
For the marrow alone,
And take time to trim fat from the meat.

The Gaping Hole


I gave
Till I could give no more,
And wondered
What it’d all been for.
Where love
Once overflowed my cup,
A gaping hole
Now opened up.
A void
That he might never fill,
But strong
He musters up his will.
In retrospect,
He’s better now,
In search of love
Kept pure somehow.
To everyday
Feel truly blessed,
To catch one’s eye
Above the rest,
The things she loves
He does the best,
To think of him
Does warm her breast.
He’ll find her soon,
Of this he’s sure,
If only he knew
What he was looking for.

She looks just like us,
You would never know,
Her insides were made
Of ice and snow.
Don’t be fooled
By sunny smiles,
She plots and schemes
All the while.
No colder heart
Is known to man,
Getting close to you
Is half her plan.
Then tight
She’ll grip you with her claws,
And pull you under
Just because.
And like a fool,
With your last breath,
You curse
The Queen of Icy Death.
Another heart
The Queen does claim,
Another victim
Of her game.

The Stages of Life


The life I live,
Played in reverse,
The plot unfolds,
From scripted verse.
The leading role,
Each actor fills,
Unknown they act,
By unseen wills.
The camera’s eye,
Absorbs each act,
Truth divides,
Fiction from fact.
So many plays,
That go unpraised,
We criticize,
Them everyday.
It’s so much easier,
To stand aside,
And dwell on faults,
The plays can’t hide.
The challenge I propose
Is clear,
To be an actor,
Free from fear.
That each of us,
Might chose today,
Supporting roles,
In other’s plays.
When courage and loyalty
Run deep,
Your drama staged
Directs the weak.
Do not deny,
The role you play,
In shaping dramas,
Day by day.

Black and white
Like boldface type,
The day of paper
Ink of night.
Invasion of the untraversed,
The ink moves in
With waves of verse.
One line forms
Behind the next,
Paper
Growing more perplexed.
A battle ground
Without a foe,
Soot and ashes
Paint the snow.
A battlefield
With many names,
Throughout the years
That it has claimed.
A kingdom
That defends itself,
Void of an army
Void of wealth.
Tis the void
That birthed the fears
In hopeful men
Throughout the years.
Remember those
Who won the fight,
And conquered day
With ink of night.

These Open Eyes


How much change
Can these open eyes bear?
It’s a shame,
It’s no use what glasses you wear.
I can remember a time
When humankind cared,
About a boy in a well
And the tragedy fared.
How much pain
Can these fragile eyes bear?
In time we forgot
The heroes that dared,
And lost all our innocence,
And fear of our God,
We’re used to the brown grass
Where green grass was sod.
How many tears
Can these weeping eyes bear?
No sympathy,
No one who cares.
The world lost its way,
And confused happy with gay,
Till death do us part
Dies each wedding day.
Our kids pay the price
For prayers we forgot,
A modern day Sodom
With no modern day Lot.

The Glistening Pearl


From the day she was born
She was a beautiful girl,
Trapped in an oyster,
A glistening pearl.
A gift to the world,
For those who will see,
The missing piece,
In a strong family.
To question fate,
Is to only waste time,
With human perception,
Of a plan divine.
Life is a treasure,
Of your own making,
Embrace the pure heart
That knows no faking.
A childlike faith,
Unknown to us,
A daily struggle,
Without a fuss.
To curse or regret,
Is only our loss,
To nurture an angel,
An act of the cross.
Blessings arrive,
In many forms,
As humans we falter
And worship the norm.
Thank you Nina,

To have you as a sister,
Makes life worth living!
