Thanks for the response
Im not a subscriber yet and afaik all indicators on the free daily charts are calculated using DAYS as data points. For instance MACD(26,12,9) uses 26, 12 and 9 days as data points.
I assume that if I use the Extra rt service they offer, I will be able to select data points that are closer together, say for instance 30 seconds or one minute? So that way MACD(26,12,9) would mean 26, 12 and 9 minutes?
Sure they do.
You can even plot a 1 minute chart. There also is an auto-refresh feature, with the fastest rate being 15 secs.

Just a quick question regarding stockcharts, how does it work for intraday trading? I know they offer a real-time service to draw the price, BUT what about the indicators they offer? Do these indicators work for intraday trading? Im talking about indicators like CMF, RSI etc....
Thanks Quasi, That's great--you've certainly given me something to work with! Much appreciated!
Thank you soo much. This is what I was exactly looking for. I learn something new all the time from you. You are a pro at this. Thank you soo much again.
Re; Acura.. Scan for MA of Volume..??
If I understand what you are trying to do, it is possible.
First off the scan coding you've shown has an extra set of square brackets which aren't necessary but actually don't change how the clause is executed. So your section of code looks for todays 3 day average volume to be greater than yesterdays 3 day average volume.
[type = stock]
and [daily sma(3,daily volume) > [yesterdays daily sma(3,daily volume)]]
But as I understand it you're actually looking for todays 3 day average volume to be greater than yesterdays and every day for the last 6 months, (ie a new 6 month high in 3 SMA of volume). So all we need to do is have a section of code that finds the highest value of the 3 day average volume number over the last 6 months starting yesterday. Then require that todays 3 day average volume be greater than the highest value over the previous 6 months. So we'll use the MAX over time function and to define the 6 months we'll use 120 days.
[type = stock]
and [ sma(3, volume) > yesterdays MAX (120, sma(3, volume)) ]
hope this gives you some ideas

Re: Major.. scan range question..
Sorry its been a very busy time of year and it looks like no one else has given you any tips so far, so here's my take on the problem.
Not sure exactly what you put in the scan, but I assume it was something like this. And you were looking for stocks which have had a trading range over the last 30 days of at least 20% of todays close, the results seemed irrelevant.
[type = stock]
and [max (30, Range) > close * 0.20]
The problem is in the definition of range. With respect to the scanning engine, range is defined as the High minus the Low of the period. As this is a daily scan, it is looking for stocks which have had at least one DAILY "high - low" difference of at least 20% of todays close. This is quite different than what I believe you were trying to achieve.
So here's some coding which should work a little better. We need to find the highest close over the last 30 days and subtract from that the lowest close over the last 30 days, (of course the highest and lowest close will not be on the same day). Then we want this difference to be greater than 20% of todays close.
[type = stock]
and [[max (30, close) - min (30, close)] > close * 0.20]
** note we are using an extra set of square brackets to enclose the max minus min calculation.
Hope this gives you some ideas

I am thinking about it but haven't commited myself yet
Seems like a deal especially if they are throwing in a 1 year extra charting service but I would have preferred an online gotomeeting or something like that.
Anyone planning on going to the "Chartcon" in August? TIA.

Is it possible to create a scan to find stocks that have daily average volume breakouts over say a 6 month period? For instance I have the 3 sma volume indicator displayed as a line on my chart and I am trying to create a scan that will show me stocks that have a breakout 3 sma volume over the last 6 months. Heres one I tried [daily sma(3,daily volume) > [yesterdays daily sma(3,daily volume)]]
but I am looking for a record 3 day volume breakout over the last 6 months. Thank You
Re; Red delete button - can you undue?
Yes it is a delete button and I don't know of any way to recover the chart. If its a complicated and very important chart that can't be redone then I would send a very nice email to Stockcharts and see if they could possibly recover it from one of their backups.
If you have very important charts which can't be recreated then I would create bookmarks to the URL's for all of those charts, the bookmarks stored in your browser can be used to gain access to the chart again and then re-save it to your Fav List.
However there is another way to recover a chart if you've just accidentally deleted it. This may be a little different depending on your browser and version, but just use the back and forward buttons on your browser to navigate back to the page which had the chart on it. You may have to go back a page and then forward again before you see the chart. Then open that chart in another window or tab and then re-save it to your Fav List.

Re; any way to turn off the calendar pop up?
Sorry there is no way I know of to turn off the pop up calendar. However on my screen in FireFox it appears below the date input box, so I can still input the date manually if desired or use the calendar. Doesn't seem to slow down my system as the popup is almost immediate.

Hello everyone! A stockcharts scan question:
I'm not seeing that scanning for 'range' as a percentage of price works properly. That is, can a person not scan for stocks that, say, have fluctuated at least 20% in the last 30 days, etc.? When I attempt this, I get results that appear irrelevant. It seems as though perhaps a person can only scan for 'range' as a fixed numreric value, such as 1.5, etc., thus severely limiting the current price difference of any group of stocks that can be checked with a particular scan employing the 'range' criteria...
I don't want to run serveral scans on small groups of similarly-priced stocks--I just want to run my single system of scans (and try out 'range' now) on all price levels I normally follow.
How can a, say, 20 day range of >= 15% of current stock price be scanned for?
Thank you!
Red delete button - can you undue?
when you look at charts 10 on a page - I noticed today they looked a little blurry - maybe it was my monitor but then I noticed a very tiny gray box at the top right corner of a chart and when i moused over it turned red like a video full screen button does so I clicked on it and the charts disappeared - is it a delete button? if so how to get the chart back it was a very complex chart with a lot of work for months - I did a search but their knowledge base has nothing - why would they put a delete button on a chart - hope it isn't but a stupid idea as one could hit it by mistake. There is already a delete chart line next to the chart.
I see no note of this in the help file it says
10 Per Page: Displays up to 10 charts on a single page. Further customization options and links to other chart types are provided beside each chart. - Right to the right of the charts so what is this stupid red box that made my chart go away? I am not sure I can even duplicate this t charts again as the setting are not written down. Where is an undo button or location??
If they ended on half hour the last candle would only be 30 minutes and show 30 mins of volume - the last hours volume is important to many
anyway use 30 minutes charts and get all
any way to turn off the calendar pop up?
In their latest change to charts they put in some pop up calendar that opens right in your way when you go to change dates on charts. IMO it slows things down as very fast to change a date by hand. Any way to get rid of it?
thanks
All services I deal with end on the hour as well . . .
I find it easier/nicer to work with ...
especially since most of the action occurs during
the first 30-minutes after the Open and the last 30-minutes .. before the Close.
So ending on 1000 and 1600 is nice for me.
JMHO.
Copy of EMAIL to Stock Charts
....
Hourly Bars
Esignal and some other programs end the hourly bars on the half Hour
Like 7:30,8:30,9:30 Pac Time
.
Why does StockCharts end the Hourly Bars on the hour ?
7 AM, 8,9,10,11,12 Pac Time.
Is there a way to end StockCharts on the Half Hour ?
RE: Peter Pan, PSAR Question...
Yes, sorry Peter, company visiting and ah yes still digesting food and wine.
I did take a look at your question re some way to mimic a monthly PSAR from a modification of the weekly settings. However I don't have any ideas at present, I've looked at this before with other indicators trying to mimic a longer term and I didn't find any method that would work reliably.
If I think of anything I'll let you know.
Quasi
Are you all still digesting your Thanksgiving Turkey?
Anyone has an idea about the PSAR (my previous question)?
Thanks!
Parabolic SAR Scan
Great Questions & Answers about scanning! Keep it up!
Here's another one:
Stockcharts can only scan daily or weekly (to my knowledge), but I want to be able to do a Monthly scan with the PSAR.
How can I adjust the settings in the weekly scan so it can search for monthly PSAR?
For ex., the regular daily Parabolic SAR uses: 0.02,0.2
How can I convert these numbers into a monthly scan?
And why not, into a 60-minute scan?
Thanks for any insights.
Peter
Teh new addition to freestockcharts
Now they have a page showing most popular stock charts now
[url]
www.freestockcharts.com/LiveWatch/Symbol/SIMG[/url][tag]insert-text-here[/tag]
They also have a fast chart view if you do not need streaming
insert-text-here
Of course not at all like stochcharts.com but good for quick look at charts and for sharing on message boards and chat rooms and with friends
Trade to Live, Yes I tried a few different options myself tonight and I can pick it up but also getting too many other hits.
The problem is that the range of closes over that period of 10 or 20 days is fairly large, about +/- 5%, thus their will be 1000's of stocks also in that range. The tight range would have to be less than say +/- 1% to get only a few hits.
If I think of anything else I'll post it here, but I think you may have to think of some other ideas.

Have tried that several different ways....Getting old and I am losing brain power....lol...another clue or 12?

Re: Trade to live,, Looking for tight range....
Try something using the min / max range over time, you will have to modify the percentages and time a little, but it should give you what you want.

Quasi....again need your help....I'm trying to scan for a tight range over 20 days. I want my scan to basically stay in the same price range...therefore sideways....

as an example...from Sept forward to beginning of Oct
just can't seem to get the sideways action down....
Once again...tia

Was wondering what the interaction would be with realtime data. Had hoped Realtime Exchange data instead of BAT data would have allowed a more accurate calculation at a particular point of the trading day for volume based indicators. Hadn't tried the service yet so wasn't sure how volume based calculations were handled intraday.

Re: Trade15, IntraDay scans...
I only have SC Extra, not real time, so I'm just guessing here as to how it would work. You might have to contact Support at StockCharts to verify it would do what you want.
However as far as any indicators or overlays that are based on price it should work fine.
But any volume type scans would be a problem as volume is cumulative thru the day, thus comparing todays volume at 10:00 AM to the total volume yesterday is not a far comparison. You would have to pro-rate todays volume based on how far we are into the day at the time you ran the scan. See my previous post which covers this issue.
http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=56503441
Now for things like OBV it is not calculated until the close is fixed on the daily chart. Thus when comparing todays OBV intra day there is nothing to compare to yesterdays OBV until after the close.
hope this give you a little more background.

Hello Quasi
Thinking about subscrbing to Stockcharts realtime service. Wondered if the scan listed below would be possible using Stockcharts scan formulas ?
Close Price greater than or equal to 0.1
Close Price less than or equal to 2
Volume greater than or equal to 200,000
Fast Stochastic %K(14,3) increasing for 1 days
Slow Stochastic %K(14,3) less than or equal to 95
On Balance Volume greater than or equal to On Balance Volume EMA(10)
On Balance Volme increasing for 1 day
Appreciate any help you could offer.

Hello Quasi
Would the ExtraRT service allow me to do scans based on daily bars updated with real time values throughout the day ? I'll list in the next post the scan that I actually want to use.

Made a suggestioin to stockcharts
We know they are very slow to do things like still no search after 8 years - and it would cost them nothing - this would be to tell you which folder you stored a chart in.
This is another they could do really easily
A suggestion - when we add multiple symbols to a folder in edit view they come up as Default Style under company name- it is certainly not hard to have them reference the data base and put the company name in that space - so that would be a suggestion to implement.
I could help if other wrote- they only need to write a bit of code -
Yes I use them for some forex charts but mostly I use Quotetracker or Ninja charts for streaming.
Qcharts was bought by Esignal but like Qcharts better
thanks
have you tried checking out www.freestockcharts.com, i think its pretty sweet for the fact that its free
Intra day scan for movers
Quasi or others may have this answer. Now that SC has sort of intraday scans is it possible to get the movers? If so I guess there is no way to sort.
As example - at finviz you can scan for stocks that are 200k volume and at a volume run rate of at least 100% 0r 150% etc and have a price of over $2 etc - then sort them by gain at that moment then look at a page of the charts. I guess the best SC can do is candle glance but first you would need to scan then sort then save the list. I have not found any other site except finviz that can quickly show you many charts of stocks that are moving on good volume. If there is a way to do that with SC would be great as it would save an additional $40 month to finviz for real time.
Thanks
New Edit view of chart list adds a "Return" between every line of the text at the top of the list (in this case my Public List).
When I hit Save to save edits, about half of the text was lost due to the new added Returns, and the limited data allowed for text at the top of the list.
Arrggghhhhhh !!!!
Do they check these things before changing the site?
Reporting problems to Stockcharts....
I received the following reply from StockCharts support shortly after I sent them a problem report.
I don't know if I was the first to document and report the problem, but if I was, I would encourage all of you to report problems like this as soon as you've convinced yourself its not a problem at your end.
In this case it might have been fixed an hour earlier.
As an example here's what I sent them this morning, including all the background information I had at the time.

To: Support at Stockcharts
Seems I am able to login this morning, however I can't access many of the pages on the site or the members tab. I am getting an error "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading".
I can load charts and see my Fav lists, switch lists and pull up charts, however I can't use, view all or candle glance view. Links from the web page lead to "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading". Bookmarks to candle glance pages like this http://stockcharts.com/def/servlet/Favorites.CServlet?obj=2368072,62&cmd=show,IDAY[Y]&disp=F lead to the same thing, "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading".
Pingdom status reports show all OK, however I can also load all the pages they are looking at.
Seems others on the IHUB support forum are lining up to report the same problem.
Please have a look into this situation.
thanks

I'm up and running now.
Yes I'm having the same problem and just finished documenting my findings and reported it to Stockcharts help desk.
If you want to look at any of your charts and lists, just type in any chart symbol on the home page, then when that chart is up you will have access to all your Fav Lists and charts.
However I can't use the view all function or the candleglance function.
I'm sure this will be resolved shortly.
Same problem, can't open my own favorite charts.
