Rolandb, chart extension on top..
Not any way I can think of right now. But you could use this little trick and it might be good enough for your purpose.
Just add an indicator above the chart and set it to invisible or opacity 0. As shown below you will be able to extend the Fib lines into that area along with the price levels. However once you get about 1/2 way into that area the Fib values will change to ones derived from that area.
hope that helps

Is there a way to add space at top of bottom of chart?
We can add bars to the right but sometimes in doing a Fibonacci retrace or projection it would be nice to be able to add on top
is is possible?
Thanks
Now I see how you break it down...wow, I wasn't even close. Once again, I really appreciate your help Quasi, and your tips so we can learn this for ourselves going forward. Thanks!
Mckinley, Yes it is possible to create such a scan...
Q: A stock has 5 consecutive days down, then an inside day on the 6th day
A: First think about the criteria which must be met today and what criteria must be met in the previous several days. It often helps in the beginning to create a drawing of what you are looking for. The drawing can then be annotated with the required data formulas.
Here's your basic scan in an annotated drawing. (Note we will keep it simple at this point and just use the open and close data, ie ignoring the candle tails, highs and lows).
It just takes a while to start from the beginning and enter each criteria element one at a time. Here's what it would look like in the basic scan engine.
http://stockcharts.com/def/servlet/SC.uscan?s=I.N|G.0|USAD[T.T_EQ_S]![DAS0,20,TV_GT_40000]![DTC0_GT_DTO0]![DTC0_LT_DTO1]![DTO0_GT_DTC1]![DTC1_LT_DTO1]![DTC1_LT_DTC2]![DTC2_LT_DTO2]![DTC2_LT_DTC3]![DTC3_LT_DTO3]![DTC3_LT_DTC4]![DTC4_LT_DTO4]![DTC4_LT_DTC5]![DTC5_LT_DTO5]
And in the advanced scan engine.
[type = stock]
and [daily sma(20,daily volume) > 40000]
and [daily close > daily open]
and [daily close < yesterday's daily open]
and [daily open > yesterday's daily close]
and [yesterday's daily close < yesterday's daily open]
and [yesterday's daily close < 2 days ago daily close]
and [2 days ago daily close < 2 days ago daily open]
and [2 days ago daily close < 3 days ago daily close]
and [3 days ago daily close < 3 days ago daily open]
and [3 days ago daily close < 4 days ago daily close]
and [4 days ago daily close < 4 days ago daily open]
and [4 days ago daily close < 5 days ago daily close]
and [5 days ago daily close < 5 days ago daily open]
hope this gives you some ideas to get you started.
cheers
Quasi
I tried to figure out this scan but I am still a novice user of stockcharts. Can someone please help me write a scan with the following criteria. A stock has 5 consecutive days down, then an inside day on the 6th day. I am appreciative of any help!
No problem, let us know if it works for you.
Quasi
Thanks Quasi- that was extremely helpful.
Hi Mckinley, re scan question...
Simple answer is Yes it can be done. I'm not sure which part you are having problems with ??
I would recommend you start with the Basic Scan engine interface until you are more comfortable with writing scans. It will also let you convert any of your scans to the Advanced interface, so you can see what they would look like.
Anyway here are some ideas to get you started, note I added a few things like S&P500 and Close greater than $5, this helps to limit the output and makes verification of the scan a little easier.
• For the last market close:
• S&P 500 (Large Caps) Stocks with...
• 60-day Simple Moving Average of Volume for today is greater than 500000
• 60-day Simple Moving Average of Close for today is greater than 5
• Daily ADX Line(14) for today is greater than 25
• Daily Close for today is less than 34-day Exponential Moving Average of Close for today times 1.02
• Daily Close for today is greater than 34-day Exponential Moving Average of Close for today times 0.98
Here's a link to the Basic Scan input page with the above criteria set up, play around and modify to your liking.
http://stockcharts.com/def/servlet/SC.uscan?s=I.N|G.0|USAD[T.T_EQ_S]![G.PSP500]![DAS0,60,TV_GT_500000]![DAS0,60,TC_GT_5.00]![DBM0,14_GT_25]![DTC0_LT_DAX0,34,TC*1.02]![DTC0_GT_DAX0,34,TC*0.98]
Now in the Advance Scan interface it would look like this.
[type = stock]
and [group is 'sp500']
and [daily sma(60,daily volume) > 500000]
and [daily sma(60,daily close) > 5]
and [daily adx line(14) > 25]
and [daily close < daily ema(34,daily close) * 1.02]
and [daily close > daily ema(34,daily close) * 0.98]
hope this helps get you started
Quasi
Is it possible to write a stockcharts scan for stocks that meet this criteria? ADX is above 25, daily avg volume is greater than 500,000 , and the stock is within 2% of the 34 EMA. I appreciate any input. Thanks!
Thanks so much for your help!
Wadirun1, re chart link posting, you've got it now...
Yes your Post# 6699 is a perfect example of how the "Linkable Version" button works at Stockcharts.
Initially both charts looked the same, both had BB's. However the first chart has a temporary URL, ie the second last section starts with a "t". Stockcharts temporarily stores your chart settings under that code for a few hours for your convenience. After that time the settings are deleted and the chart will revert to the free user default settings.
http://stockcharts.com/c-sc/sc?s=IDLM&p=D&yr=0&mn=6&dy=0&i=t41361409148&r=524
However if you like those settings and want to store them permanently you have to make the chart linkable. Here's the URL for your second chart which was made Linkable. Notice the second last section now starts with a "p", ie the settings are now permanently stored in the Stockcharts database.
http://stockcharts.com/c-sc/sc?s=IDLM&p=D&yr=0&mn=6&dy=0&i=p41361409148&r=5817
Note you can also easily tell whether you have made the chart linkable by looking a the URL in the address bar at the top of the charting page. It will already show the last second last section with the "p". Here's the URL link to the same chart but on the charting page, note the stock symbol and settings part of the URL is the same but it starts with /h-sc/ui?s= , rather than /c-sc/sc?s= which is just the chart image server.
http://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=IDLM&p=D&yr=0&mn=6&dy=0&i=p41361409148&r=5817
Quas
wadi,
Once you get the chart up that you want to post on here, right-click on the chart itself and copy that link (read: not the link in your address bar). Then remove the "http://" and surround it in [chart][/chart] tags. It should work every time unless you post multiple charts in one post. In that case, stockcharts will revert them all to default.
OK. My apologies for not reading the directions closely enough.
Oddly enough, when I follow the directions, it works just fine, and when I don't, it doesn't. Hmmmmmm. Who would have guessed.
The key is to click on linkable before grabbing the URL from properties.
As Rosanne Rosanadana used to say -- "Nevermind".
Thanks.
So, right now, for instance, you should see bollinger bands.
After a while, they disappear as in this post (which originally had BBs):
http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=55826047
Yes, chart reverts to exactly what I see as default chart setting if I enter www.stockcharts.com and put in a ticker. I am using free charts.
I did not hit linkable. Maybe that is the problem. I'll enter one in this post with hitting linkable and without hitting linkable to test that.
Without hitting linkable:
After hitting linkable:
Can you give us the links to a few posts where this is happening. We might be able to look at the posts and links to see what is happening.
PS are you hitting the "Linkable Version" below the chart on Stockcharts before you grab the image URL.
Also is the way the charts appear after a few hours just like you default chart setting on Stockcharts.
Quasi
I have recently started having problems posting charts from Stockcharts. I get the URL, highlight it, select Image, and then SUBMIT. The chart looks PERFECT! But a couple of hours later the chart has changed. It has lost the indicators I wanted to post and it devolves back to a generic chart (50/200 MA, RSI, volume).
I don't think this used to happen.
Thanks.
Wadi
Much thanks again Quasi for your insight.
I'll check your suggestions in a few days, I'm leaving soon for a week vacation.
Cheers!
Hi Peter, yes I see what you are trying to do. I had to bring up your chart on the charting input page to see that you were actually plotting BB's of the MACD of the stock price. IE the BB's are of the MACD and are not BB's of the stock price.
Also I see you switched to using the PPO in your scan which is actually the MACD in percentage terms rather than raw price difference.
Yes it can be done, although setting up the coding for scanning an overlay of an indicator can be a little confusing.
In this example we are scanning for the MACD line of price crossing the Upper BB of price, not what we want.
and [MACD Line (12,26,1) X Upper BB (20,0.5)]
In order the specify the BB's are based on the MACD rather than price, we need to nest that requirement into the BB clause, as follows.
[type = stock]
and [Close > 3.80] and [Close < 4]
and [MACD line (12,26,1) X Upper BB (20,0.5, MACD line(12,26,1))]
As per your chart "C" met this requirement on Sept 8th, so I ran the above scan tonight with a starting date of 28 days ago and it did pick up C along with TASR which also met the requirement on that date. (note I set a narrow price range just to zoom in on C which is what we wanted to find in order to verify that the scan worked).
hope this helps
Quasi
Hi Peter, glad to see you figured out a few ideas on your own, thats always the best way to learn. I did think about your problem last night so will add my ideas on the subject.
Here's my thought process,
- 50 day narrow range which has broken above it today.
- use yesterdays SMA50 close as mid point
- require each close for the last 50 days to be within +/- 5% of yesterdays SMA50 close
- then require todays close to be above yesterdays SMA50 by 7%
Here's the scan coding, try playing around with it a little to get what you want. Note the lines starting with // are just comments.
[type = stock]
and [Close > 1 ] and [Close < 500]
// 50 day consolidation, narrow range close within +/- 5% of the SMA-50
and [1 day ago max (50, close ) <= 1 day ago sma(50, close) * 1.05]
and [1 day ago min (50, close ) >= 1 day ago sma(50, close) * .95]
// today break out of the (1.05) 5% upper range to above (1.07) 7%
and [close > 1 day ago sma(50, close) *1.07]
happy scanning

How to Find a B/O of Upper Bollinger Band embedded within a MACD?
I've been trying to find a way to create a scan like that for days. And no matter what I try, nothing works. (BTW, I learn this technique from a video on YouTube.)
The starting hypothesis for the scan is the following:
[type = stock] and [PPO Line (12,26,1) X Upper BB (20,0.5)]
But it doesn't work the way I want. Look at the following chart, that's what I'm trying to achieve. A B/O (cross-over) of the MACD Line crossing above the Upper Bollinger Band. (Note that the BB is behind the MACD Line, not behind the chart itself.)
Any ideas?
Roland: Sorry, can't tell, it's a military secret!
OK, more seriously, it's not a very complicated scan, but you have to tweak it according to your own preferences (the hardest part.)
Quasi (always generous in sharing his knowledge) provided part of the answer in his reply to one of my questions on post 6656. Then, I just added a little twist to his suggestion by adding a MaxHigh N to the formula. "N" being any number of days you want to back test. Here's an example, though I still have to work on it... it's not bullet-proof!
[type = stock]
and [max (10, EMA(50, close) ) <= EMA(50, close) * 1.02]
and [min (10, EMA(50, close) ) >= EMA(50, close) * 0.98]
and [daily high > yesterday's daily max(20,daily high)]
Play with the EMA and number of days to your liking. But to my taste, this scan finds too many stocks.
Hope this helps! If you find some other tweakings, please share them here for our benefits! Thanks!
Is it a secret place Peter Pan - or are you going to share it with us?
I found something close to what I was looking for.
Thanks for reading!
How to Find a B/O from a trading range?
Let's say I want to find a Break-out of a trading range since 2 months (like the example below).
How can I scan for stocks that reside inside a range of e.g. between 3.50 and 3.80, and then break-out of it?
I thought about a certain percentage of the highs and lows, but the close is always different. So I can't write ± 8%, it will work for a close like in the ex., but won't work for close in the range of GOOG or AAPL.
I also have to track the time. How about a B/O for the last 3-4 months, or 15 days?
Any ideas?
Much thanks again for any insights.
Finally, got it also! Here's what they are saying on their support page:

I can't...
Hi Baj,
I am also on Vancouver Island, and check with "speedtest" with Oregon, and it's working normally.
Are you able to contact Stockcharts support?
--Peter
I still have problems.
I tried with Chrome, Firefox, Maxthon, IE8... zilch, nada, nothing!
If I refresh the page many times, I can see about 50% of the charts in a candlechart page. Most are with red X. Or the page doesn't load at all.
I tried to get in touch with support, and can't even open the page!
I also checked your link, and all seem to be functionning normally.... on their side!
I didn't do anything particular, except maybe install a new software "SyncToys" from Microsoft. I'll try to uninstall it to see if it does something.
Thanks for your help.
StockCharts not working here either.
Am on Vancouver Island, and other internet connections work fine. Speed Test to Oregon is great.
Anyone else having problems?
Has been OK for me this morning. Just checked the independent monitoring site PingDom and they don't show that there was any down time in Oct.
Here's the direct link where you can select the day by day history of the different site servers.
http://www.pingdom.com/reports/g0fdmqv6vgnb/
However its possible there was some kind of internet problem just in your area.
Just heading out, good luck.

Stockcharts is down on my side this morning (Oct. 13)
I can't even check out what the're doing on their status site:
http://stockcharts.typepad.com/status/
Any news?
I forgot to mention their page to make a request
http://stockcharts.com/support/techsupport.html
this is in part what I wrote:
..................what would be very useful and has been missing all these years is the usual Fibonacci Projection which is found on most live streaming charts like Esignal, Tradestation, Ninja charts etc. The typical and most used projection are what could be expressed as 127.2% and 141.4% and 161.8%. Very helpful in finding tops or profit points. Can't imagine it would be too hard to add.
Anyone tried the Beta annotation tools
They added an arch and time for Fibonacci but those are rarely used. What was needed was a Fibonacci Projection tool that would allow you to find likely targets - like 127% 141%. Live charting programs have them like esignal and Ninja charts but would be nice for stockcharts to include so you could share them. They are certainly much more helpful than circles and time lines.
There is the new Elliot wave numbering tool that will let those folks go wild so that is cool for them.
I guess for the Projection Fibo will have to write them and keep asking for them to include. They are pretty close and do not add too often but there is always hope.
If you really need it, you might look into MetaStock by Equis or Telecharts by Worden, not sure but I think they might have the option to do intraday scans. However I'm sure it will be very expensive.
Cheers
Quasi
Any idea what software does allow intra day scans on something like this?
Read the last part of my last post, you must have read it before I added the note about time periods on intraday charts, thats the problem. On your chart the SMA10-High is based on the last 10 30min bars, the scan is not intraday, it is looking at the last 10 day daily bars for the SMA10-high.
Quasi
Yes I just ran your scan, got 26 hits. ALTR, BIDU and COST were among the outputs. I checked them all and they all meet the criteria. The current intraday low for today is above the daily SMA10 of the highs, I've included my output charts for the three in question.
Remember its not intraday periods, the SMA10 of the highs is calculated from the highs for the last 9 days and the 10th period is using the current intraday high from today. This is then compared against the current intraday low for today.
Remember its not intraday periods, the SMA10 of the highs is calculated from the highs for the last 9 days and the 10th period is using the current intraday high from today. This is then compared against the current intraday low for today. I'm suspecting you are looking at an intraday chart like the one below which is a 10 min chart. In this case the SMA10 is calculated and plotted based on the last 10min intraday bars. You can plot it but you can't use intraday periods in a scan.
Cheers
Quasi
Thanks again! I have my settings on "last intraday update" and I have it coded like this
[type = stock] and [country = us] and [low > sma(10,high)] and [group is NASDAQ100]
so shouldnt it be giving me stocks whose low so far today is higher than the sma(10,high)? but it isn't...and I understand that it is delayed but its still not even giving me stocks whose low is even close to being above the sma(10,high)?? Can you think of any reason why it isn't working?
here is an example of a couple that it has given me
ALTR
BIDU
COST
all of these have lows way below the sma(10,high)
Not really sure what you are trying to get at, you would have to try a few combination's to see what works for you.
However consider when you run a scan, say today when the markets are open, you will be scanning the database as of the last close, ie last nights close. If you scan shortly after the market is closed you might still be using last nights closing data, just look at the top of the scanning page it will tell you the scan is running as of "0" trading days before the last market close "date". At some point after the market is closed the base will have completed its update and that last market close date will change to today.
You can also check the status of data updates on the data blog.
http://blogs.stockcharts.com/data/
Now you can also toggle that setting to use the last market intraday update, which is usually 15-30 mins behind the market. But be aware the scan is not running on intraday periods, in simple terms its just assuming the last trade in the database is the end of the day, ie; setting the O, H, L, C as follows:
- the open to the open
- the high to the current high to this point
- the low to the current low to this point
- the close to the current last trade
Stockcharts has lots of momentum indicators you can plot on your chart. Here's a great article describing many of them in detail.

Quasi
Wow! Thanks so so much!
Do you think that if I coded
[today's sma(10,high) < daily open]
would it be closer to the last two price bars then if I did it on the previous days close, like you suggested? Does that make sense?
Also is there any way to have momentum as an indicator along the bottom of a chart? I want to be able to see when the momentum line crosses the 28 period moving average
Re Huckleberry24, scan and plot SMA of the high
1- You can not do scans on intraday time periods.
2- Yes you can use the 10SMA-High in a scan but you would have to use the advanced scan interface, the coding would be similar to this: [close > sma(10,high)]
3- Yes the default for the SMA is the close, however you can modify that to be the, open, high, low or close. The following chart shows the 1 day SMA's for all of these along with your 10SMA-High.
Charting page link for above chart, so you can see what settings were used to create it.

I have three questions. First does anyone know how I can do a scan for a stock whose last two 30min price bars have fallen above the 10 period simple moving average of the high? This site seems to not understand what the sma of the high is...which leads to my second question. Does anyone know how to show the 10 period simple moving average of the high as an overlay on a chart? My last question, is it possible to Show momentum as an indicator on a chart?
Excellent. Thanx much for your help Quasi.

Re Stockdog, Adv Scan Range Problem
As per my post earlier today, I did email Stockcharts with the problem and my documentation. I received an email a couple of hours later, they think they have found and repaired the problem.
I re-ran my test scans as previously posted and now get 56 hits for all scan versions, all the same and a quick check of the charts shows they all meet the criteria.
Try your scan again now and check the results.
Also in the future you can contact Stockcharts directly thru the support tab, including all your supporting documentation to help them verify and troubleshoot the problem. I know sometimes users just think they have the coding wrong and want someone here to check it. But if you think its right and the problem is at Stockcharts, as in this case, they would have known earlier and the issue would have been resolved sooner.
In this particular case you had a scan that you know worked in the past and suddenly started giving erratic results, pretty clear cut case to report it directly. Sometimes stuff happens and the faster all of us can report these glitches to Stockcharts the better the service gets.
Please let Stockcharts and myself know if you are still having any problems.
Cheers
