World's first speedboat drone keep seas, sailors and shorelines safe
By David Brinn January 22, 2006
A critical problem for any country's navy is figuring out how to patrol its territory and protect its nation's shore without putting its vessels and seamen at excessive risk of enemy attack. And no country is more aware of the problem than Israel.
Israel has long been a world leader in keeping territory on the ground safe by using unmanned aerial vehicles. Some of these aircraft, according to foreign reports, are equipped with offensive weapons used to target Palestinian terrorists. The Israeli military has also begun deploying remote-controlled vehicles along the security fence in the West Bank.
That's why it's not surprising that an Israeli company - Rafael Armament Development Authority Ltd. - has developed a novel solution that identifies infiltration and terrorists while safeguarding the lives of troops on the seas. The solution is called the 'Protector' and it represents the world's first speedboat drone, operated without any personnel on board. One of the first systems is already headed to the US for evaluation, following the signing of a cooperation agreement with US giants Lockheed Martin and BAE System.
The 30-foot-long 'Protector' boat can reach speeds of up to 43 miles per hour and is fitted with a radar system, cameras that can identify targets, and a light machine-gun.
"There'll certainly be a time soon when the Protector will be protecting US ships,"

Mick,
I wish i were so sure, lol.Still, i thought it a good
place to park some monies for the near term developments.
At any rate, i bought in a few days ago, paying only a
couple of cents more than the 'rescuer' paid for gaining
control ($ 6.25) of the company.
To lose, therefore, i have very little, to gain - a lot.
Time will tell.
Regards,

you are on target this time with GILTF.
I think it will have its ups and downs with the rumours
in the coming period. These tenders are quite long in
process, as the amount/size is quite substantial.

i'll be watching this one closely.
They were close enough to be under, got 'rescued'
about six months ago, and now there are renewed
hopes.

yes, they were in trouble back a few. i thought they might go under.
For more than one reason, me too.

i totally agree with the bidding war. i hope they get it.
This company was in troubles, and on its way
to improvement, although i would probably not
have bought in, if not for this contract.
A good risk/reward ratio, if.......
There is no knowing, but chances are pretty
good IMHO.

Gilat to bid in $5b US armed forces tender
Potential revenue for Gilat from the tender amounts to tens of millions of dollars.
Roy Meltzer 16 Jan 06 17:40
Sources inform "Globes" that Israeli company Gilat Satellite Networks (Nasdaq: GILTF; TASE: GILTF) will bid in a $5 billion US armed forces tender for satellite communications systems. It is difficult at this stage to evaluate Gilat’s chances, if any, of winning the tender, and the revenue it would receive in the event it wins. Since, however, Gilat is one of the world’s three leading companies making very small aperture terminals (VSATs), the equipment in the tender, its potential revenue is likely to amount to at least tens of millions of dollars.
The US armed forces plan to use the satellite communications systems it procures mostly for missions in Iraq. In the past few days, the Armed Forces issued a request for proposal (RFP) for supplying the systems. It is believed that pricing among the bidders will take place over the coming year.
According to the tender, the armed forces need the following global positioning systems (GPS) and satellite systems for vehicles facilitating continuous communication between field units for purposes of various applications. The tender is part of a five-year procurement plan by the armed forces and the US Department of Defense. The plan is to buy six satellite systems from 4-6 different bidders, who will provide a basket of solutions, including hardware, software, and support and maintenance services for the systems. The armed forces will also sign contracts with two small subcontractors meeting the tender terms. Gilat will bid in this section of the tender.
Given the tender terms, the RFP for the large suppliers is irrelevant to Gilat; it is designed for heavy equipment suppliers, such as US company Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT), which can offer the required full basket of solutions. At the same time, it is believed that Gilat will bend all its efforts to becoming one of the subcontractors. Gilat’s main competition is expected to come from Hughes Space and Communications (HSC) and ViaSat (Nasdaq: VSAT).
A source close to Gilat said that the most likely possibility is that Gilat will combine with a large company in the tender as a supplier of VSAT dishes. At the same time, in view of Gilat’s lack of experience in working with the US military, the company has found it difficult to evaluate its chances of success. The source agreed, however, that the revenue potential was considerable, despite the low profitability typical of the military sector.

>>Israeli goat fights terror
Explosive-sniffing dogs cannot be used in Muslim countries; Israeli trains goat instead
Zvi Alush
Anti-terror goat: It may sound like a prank, but 29-year-old dog trainer Geva Zin from Kibbutz Lahav in the south is in fact training a goat to detect explosives, Israel's leading newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported Sunday.
Zin is trying to solve a problem that has been troubling IDF soldiers and American fighters in Iraq: How to detect explosive materials hidden on one's body, as in the case when dealing with suicide bombers.
Explosive-sniffing dogs may be the obvious solution, yet using a dog in Muslim societies would be problematic and offensive to the local population.
Zin, who runs a kennel in Kibbutz Lahav, has already trained dogs and even pigs to sniff out explosive materials and uncover mines.
Following reports on Zin's success in training pigs for such mission, military officials turned to him with a request to train animals that would be less problematic in the eyes of Muslims. <<

SerVision wins $100,000 Rafiah border surveillance contract
The primary contracter is US-based CTI Consulting. SerVision's payment was partly from the US government.
Globes correspondent 8 Jan 06 13:05
SerVision (AIM: SEV) announce at the end of last week that was awarded a $100,000 initial contract for a surveillance system by US-based CTI Consulting Inc.
SerVision's SVG1000- 16 channel video monitoring system is being employed by European Union observers and Israeli security officers to monitor border crossings at the Rafiah [Rafah] border crossing between Palestinian Authority-controlled Gaza and Egypt. EU observers will oversee security at the border crossing over SerVision’s real-time video monitoring systems, while Israeli security officers will be closely monitoring the border via live video-link.
CTI is a company engaged in aviation security consulting, planning, and design.
SerVision develops, manufactures, markets and sells wireless video surveillance products.
SerVision's payment of $100,000 for this initial contract was partly supported by the US government.
SerVision chairman and CEO Gideon Tahan said, "CTI chose SerVision because our fully integrated wireless video monitoring platforms combine security functionality with the highest level of video streaming performance."

HEI Announces First Quarter Fiscal 2006 Results
1/5/2006 6:00:43 AM
MINNEAPOLIS, Jan 05, 2006 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- HEI, Inc. (HEII) ( http://www.heii.com ) today announced results for its first quarter of fiscal 2006, which ended November 26, 2005.
Net sales for the first quarter of fiscal 2006 were $13.8 million, a 2% decrease from sales of $14.1 million reported in the first quarter of fiscal 2005. The Company reported net loss of $630,000 or $0.07 per share in the first quarter this year as compared to net income of $415,000 or $0.05 per share last year. The first quarter of fiscal 2005 included $481,000 of litigation recoveries.
"Our revenue for the first quarter of Fiscal 2006 was $1.0 million below our expectations due primarily to a temporary parts shortage for one RFID product and production capacity issues at our Tempe facility," said Mack Traynor, Chief Executive Officer and President. "We have seen a significant increase in the demand for our flex based products over the past year and we believe that the addition of new equipment, which we expect to be on-line in February, will substantially increase our production capabilities in this area," continued Mr. Traynor.
"We previously indicated that we would spend additional amounts in Fiscal 2006 to improve our manufacturing processes and to enhance our marketing capabilities. This is an important investment for the long term growth of the Company," Traynor added. "It should be noted however that while our operating expenses increased approximately $370,000 over the first quarter of fiscal 2005, approximately $115,000 of this increase relates to the new requirement to record an expense related to the value of stock options," Traynor continued.
"Overall, while we are disappointed in the top line results for the quarter, we were pleased that we were able to sustain our profit margins and that our net income for the quarter was only slightly below our internal expectations," concluded Mr. Traynor.
The Company will hold a conference call to discuss the Company's operating results and business strategies on Thursday January 5, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time (3:00 p.m. Central Time). The conference call can be accessed via telephone by dialing 1-800-240-7305 (outside the US, dial 303-262-2130). Specify conference reservation number 11050158. Yuval Ne'eman, Israel's Preeminent Scientific Leader, Joins Advisory Board Of HiEnergy Technologies
1/4/2006 9:01:25 AM
IRVINE, Calif., Jan 04, 2006 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- HiEnergy Technologies, Inc. (HIET) announced today that Yuval Ne'eman, world renowned nuclear particle physicist and a mastermind of Israel's military strategy and nuclear R&D program, has joined the Scientific Advisory Board of HiEnergy Technologies. HiEnergy Technologies is the homeland security industry leader in neutron-based diagnostic technology and creator of the world's first "Atometry" explosive detection devices.
As an advisor, Dr. Ne'eman will periodically assess HiEnergy's counter-terrorism technologies and their effectiveness to Israel's security. His conclusions and proposals will be communicated on a strictly confidential basis through consultations in Israel and the U.S.
"Dr. Maglich's 'atometry' method for the first time offers a quantitative tool that can tell explosive from non-explosive with 97.75% statistical probability, automatically, without human intervention," wrote Dr. Ne'eman. "This should be very useful in countries such as Israel, the United Kingdom, Spain, and more recently the USA, countries where terrorism is a constant threat to the civilian population."
Dr. Ne'eman's extraordinary two-track career encompasses a variety of top governmental administrative and military roles, as well as creative work in the purely academic discipline of theoretical particle physics. He has served as Chairman of both the Israel Space Agency and Atomic Energy Commission and as Israel's Minister of Energy and Minister of Science and Development. During his military career, Dr. Ne'eman served as Director of Planning, Deputy Director of Military Intelligence, and Chief Defense Scientist of the Israeli Defense Force.
In the academic world, among other illustrious roles, Dr. Ne'eman served as President of the Tel-Aviv University, where he founded the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the School of Engineering. In the United States, he founded the Center for Particle Theory at the University of Texas at Austin and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Ne'eman has been a recipient of many major academic and humanitarian prizes and recognitions, including the Israel Prize, the Einstein Medal and the 2005 International Peace Prize for "outstanding personal achievements for the good of society as a whole" by The United Cultural Convention of the United States.
A professional Mechanical Engineer by training, Dr. Ne'eman joined the Israel Defense Force, serving as an officer for 12 years. In an unprecedented switch, in 1958, he undertook study for a doctorate at Imperial College in London, under Abdus Salam, a Pakistani born professor who later won the Nobel Prize in Physics. In the 1960's, Dr. Ne'eman discovered a classification scheme of nuclear particles based on mathematical symmetry, which led him to conceive the substructure "quarks," as the building blocks of all nuclear particles. His predictions were later confirmed by experiments in the USA. His mathematical theory has led to 'superalgebras', 'supergeometry', and 'superconnections', which will be experimentally tested in 2007.
Dr. Ne'eman, on the merits of HiEnergy's "Atometry" wrote: " ... as one who has for years worried in Israel about the protection of human lives, it is particularly gratifying to see yet another application beyond the CAT scan and MRI -- and a life-saving one -- originating in a field [nuclear particle physics] which had been described as devoid of any applicability."
ABOUT HIENERGY TECHNOLOGIES, INC. (www.hienergyinc.com)
HiEnergy Technologies, Inc. is the creator of the world's first "stoichiometric" diagnostic devices that can effectively decipher chemical formulas of unknown substances through metal or other barriers, almost instantly and without human intervention. HiEnergy's products incorporate a proprietary interrogation process which activates a selected target with neutrons causing the contents to emit back gamma rays that contain unique signatures from which the chemical formulas are derived. HiEnergy believes its Atometry(TM) technology compares with other detection technologies like color photography compares with black-and-white photography. HiEnergy's first commercial "Atometer" he SIEGMA(TM) 3E3, is unique in that it can detect and confirm whether an object or container carries a select group of dangerous or illicit substances, such as explosives, biological agents, or illicit drugs, with a probability of detection equal to approximately 97.75%, and "false negative" and "false positive" rates of nearly 2.25%.
HiEnergy is focused on the commercialization of the world's first "stoichiometric" explosive diagnostic devices, including the CarBomb Finder(TM) 3C4, a vehicle-borne system, for the detection and identification of car bombs, and the SIEGMA(TM) 3E3, a portable suitcase-borne system for the detection and identification of home-made bombs, also known as Improvised Explosive Devices or IEDs. The Company is marketing its devices to governmental and private entities and is negotiating licenses for distribution of its devices with various industry partners. The Company also continues to focus on the research and development of additional applications of its technologies and their further exploitation, both internally and through collaboration with third parties. HiEnergy is currently developing prototypes in programs with the U.S. Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security for other related uses of its core technology. Recently, it entered into a funded cooperative development agreement with the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to produce a proof of concept which incorporates the Company's SuperSenzor(TM) technology into a baggage screening system. The Company's "stoichiometric" technologies, or Atometry(TM), have been incorporated into additional prototype applications which, if the Company is able to raise the funds necessary to commercialize them, will be the next products it attempts to launch: an in-ground explosive screening system, the CarBomb Finder(TM) 3C5, the STARRAY(TM), an all-terrain robot-borne IED detector; an anti-tank landmine detector; an unexploded ordnance detector, which is also useful to detect IEDs; and a device called a "Refractorymeter," which can detect fissures or erosions in the ceramic lining of oil cracking tanks.

Hi Mick - re IMX - China order is big for this company. #msg-9017300
WASHINGTON (AP) - Precise navigation equipment that's on board airplanes instead of on the ground will allow pilots to slalom around mountains, tall buildings or restricted airspace - and lead to fewer diverted and delayed flights.
The Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday unveiled the technology and procedures that will open more runways when the weather's bad.
In Washington, airplanes have for years wended their way down the Potomac River on approach to Reagan National Airport - but only when the weather is clear and pilots could see where they were going.
Since September, the FAA has allowed pilots to use on-board navigation equipment to fly the curving route along the river even when the cloud ceilings are low and visibility is poor.
"The wave of the future is right here, right now on the tarmac at Reagan," said FAA Administrator Marion Blakey, alluding to a Bombardier Global 5000 business jet that would demonstrate the new approach on Tuesday.
With reporters on board, FAA pilots flew the jet down the Potomac River on autopilot. They didn't touch the control yokes as the airplane banked to the left and right while swerving - and descending - along the river toward Runway 19.
The FAA calls it "required navigation performance," or RNP. It's not a high-tech device but a standard for flying precision that can be met using satellite-based navigation equipment and on-board flight management computers.
Instead of flying straight to a point in space in order to line up with a runway, pilots stick to a tightly controlled path created by the FAA and coded into the airplane's computer.
The FAA has developed such paths, called RNP procedures, to airports with bad weather, mountainous terrain or both: Juneau, Alaska, San Francisco, Portland, Ore., Palm Springs, Calif., and Sun Valley, Idaho.
By the end of next year, the FAA plans 25 RNP approaches. Added to the list will be George Bush Intercontinental in Houston; Chicago Midway; Newark, N.J., Liberty; Honolulu International; Gary, Ind.; Tampa, Fla.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Guam; Wenatchee, Wash.; Tucson, Ariz.; Long Beach, Calif.; and John F. Kennedy International in New York.
"You're going to see a proliferation of RNP approaches at those approaches that make the most sense," said Nick Sabatini, the FAA's associate administrator for aviation safety.
Sabatini said it only costs the FAA $20,000 to develop each new RNP procedure, and most airliners are equipped to follow them. JetBlue and American Airlines are in talks with the FAA to be approved for the procedures, he said.
Blakey said they will relieve congestion, save fuel and reduce flight delays due to weather.
"The environmental benefits are terrific, too," she said. "Flying straight down the middle of the flight path means that people on the ground perceive less jet noise and experience fewer engine emissions."
Alaska Airlines pioneered use of the technology in the mid-1990s because of the mountains and bad weather that make it tricky to land at Juneau International Airport.
Kevin Finan, the airline's vice president of flight operations, said Alaska flies into airports using RNP procedures 6,000 times a year. Thirteen percent of those flights, or 800, would otherwise have to be diverted, so the airline saves as much as $16 million.
"It affects Aunt Martha because she spends less time in a holding pattern waiting for the weather to improve," Finan said.
The airline has flown along the required navigation performance path into Reagan National 10 times since Sept. 28. Using normal approach procedures, three of those flights would have had to be diverted.
Brian Townsend, chairman of the Air Line Pilots Association committee on modernizing the U.S. air space, said the technology for required navigation procedures has been around for quite some time. The aviation industry is only beginning to take advantage of it, he said.
"The benefits can be tremendous," Townsend said. "The sooner we can crank them out, the better off we are."

GOOGLE limits resolution for sensitive Israeli sites
Understandings reached by Israel reduce its vulnerability to enlarged satellite Internet photos of defense sites.
Ran Dagoni, Washington 22 Dec 05 15:32
Since GOOGLE (Nasdaq: GOOG) began offering satellite photographs of locations everywhere in the world in April 2005, countries have feared that high-resolution photographs of sensitive sites would expose their weak points to terrorists.
Israeli sources told "Globes" that Israel was very sensitive to exposure of strategic locations in satellite photographs. However, legal restrictions in the US and understandings between Israel and other countries are reducing Israel’s vulnerability to enlarged photos of locations liable to become targets of mega-terrorism.

XDSL is a nanotechnology company. Nanotechnology is expected to change the world
during the next decade more than the Internet did during the past decade.
NASA's Nanotech Briefs recently gave XDSL their Nano 50 Award. XDSL was also
recently featured in the Forbes/Wolfe nanotechnology report as a company to
watch. XDSL was even named one of the top 25 most important nanotechnology
companies in the new book Nanotech Fortunes.
XDSL is developing their nanotechnology with Lucent's Bell Labs, one of the
leading technology laboratories in the entire world.
XDSL is developing a nanotechnology battery that will have unlimited shelf life.
XDSL is also developing ultra-sensitive magnetometers that promise up to a
1,000-fold increase in sensitivity as compared with available uncooled sensors.
These two technologies will have major homeland security and military
applications.
XDSL also has their own TV+ system which enables telephone companies to cost
effectively provide television services. This will be a booming business during
the upcoming years with Microsoft entering it. XDSL is focusing on the overseas
markets where many people have telephone lines but no cable television.
From [lebed] what I understand, XDSL's news story will be beamed to the satellite
at 2PM EST today. Then the story will be sent to more than 500 local news
stations across the country.
XDSL's technology is so exciting because it offers so many potential homeland
security and military applications. I am sure many of the stations will be
picking up the story this Holiday weekend!
