Israel's Saifun chips away at the flash memory market
By Allison Kaplan Sommer November 27, 2005
According to Dr. Boaz Eitan, founder and CEO of Nasdaq's latest rising star, Israeli flash memory chip developer Saifun, even in the tightest prisons, people escape once in a while.
He ought to know. During his military service as a pilot for the Israel Defense Forces, he was shot down over Syria in 1970 and held for three years as a prisoner of war in Damascus. Though he was released by diplomatic means, this concept of escape has remained with him throughout his working career.
As he likes to tell Saifun's investors, one of the main problems of most flash memory chips used in mobile devices today, are that electrons inevitably escape, causing memory to deteriorate over time.
This is extremely significant, as consumers need to know that the information they hold on their laptops, PDAs, mobile phones, MP3 players, or iPods are safe at all times, even when the power is off or the batteries unexpectedly run down.
According to Dr. Ed Mlavsky, a high tech venture capitalist, and chairman and founding partner of Gemini Israel Funds, and one of the earliest investors in Saifun, the company's unique flash technology called NROM (nitrate-read-only memory) provides a better method of imprisoning electrons.
NROM has helped transform Saifun into one of the hottest companies on Nasdaq today. While the Israeli venture capital industry has long had it on its radar screen, it's only been in the last nine months after it became clear that the company was headed to the US stock market that investors and the financial press have also been buzzing with anticipation.

Clal Finance Batucha upgrades AudioCodes
Analyst Ran Israeli retains his $13 price target for the VoIP technology company.
Glodes correspondent 27 Nov 05 11:55
In the wake of the recent fall in the share price ofAudioCodes (Nasdaq: AUDC ; TASE: AUDC), Clal Finance Batucha has raised its recommendation for the VoIP technology company from "Outperform" to "Buy".
Analyst Ran Israeli retains his $13 price target for the share. This compares with a closing price in New York in Friday of $9.77, at which the company has a market cap of $394 million.
"Valuing growth technology companies has never been simple, and valuations are based on assumptions that cannot be founded on historical data. Assuming that the VoIP equipment market can be expected to grow at the rate of 30-40% in the coming years, because of VoIP's technological advantage and the substantial reduction in the price of calls, and given that AudioCodes is the leading company in its segment, in a field that the largest telecommunications equipment makers aren't necessarily active in, and in the light of the fact that the company is profitable with a strong balance sheet, we are strengthened in our view that AudioCodes will continue to present good results in the coming years," Israeli writes.

DoCoMo Debuts Phone for Kids
Japanese telecom giant offers phone with alarms, alerts, and GPS features.
November 24, 2005
NTT DoCoMo, the leading Japanese phone company, and its eight subsidiaries have introduced a child-friendly 3G mobile phone with a decidedly child-unfriendly name.
The FOMA SA800i's functions and services are designed to help keep children safe, by informing parents and other caring adults exactly where the child is at any given time.
Parents have the option to sign up for an “imadoco search,” a GPS-driven feature that automatically sends emails to parents revealing their child’s location. These can come at pre-chosen intervals of 15, 30, or 60 minutes, even if the child’s handset is switched off.
To receive immediate attention, the child can sound an alarm of about 100 decibels in times of crisis. The alarm also automatically sends alerts to three numbers.
The alerts provide a voice message at regular intervals until all the parties pick up the phone, and they can only be stopped if a password is entered into the child’s handset.
While the phone introduced on Wednesday is the first instance of a mainstream telecom company designing a child-oriented phone, a company based in Chicago, Firefly Mobile, launched a kid’s phone in February (see Firefly Phone for Kids Ships).
Five Keys
Privately held Firefly won the 2006 CES Innovation Award, presented by the Consumer Electronics Association and the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show. With just five keys instead of a regular dial pad, parents use a private PIN to program up to 22 outgoing numbers into the phone, including speed-dial keys for Mom and Dad.
Kids place calls by pressing the keys for “mom,” “dad,” or “phone book,” and then “send.” An optional call-screening feature allows the phone to accept incoming calls from only those numbers programmed into the phone book.
The phone has no text messaging, no camera, and no ability to access the Internet.
The idea of producing phones for kids hasn’t been without controversy. Child advocacy groups have even testified in the U.S. Congress about their fears that the telecom industry is exploiting children as it searches for new markets (see Kid Cell Phones Raise Concern).
NTT DoCoMo’s phone for kids also has a direct call function. When the user presses the call button, contact information for up to five registered people pops up on the screen, making it easier to call or e-mail them.
While the price of the SA800i is not immediately known, the Firefly costs $99.99 and comes preloaded with 30 minutes of talk time and a couple of accessories.
Firefly phones are currently sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and South America, while the SA800i is newly launched only in Japan.

Xbox Loses Money
The console, which retails for $399, cost Microsoft $525 to make, according to iSuppli.
November 25, 2005
Microsoft is subsidizing its Xbox 360 game console to the tune of $126 on each unit sold, according to an industry research report published Friday.
The cost of manufacturing the Xbox 360 Premium reached $525, according to iSuppli, an El Segundo, California-based microchip research firm, while the basic model of the device reached retail stores on Tuesday with a suggested price of $399.
Microsoft spokesperson Molly O'Donnell said the company does not comment or provide guidance on Xbox 360 cost information. Shares of Microsoft were down $0.23 to $27.69 in recent trading.
It is not unusual for game console manufacturers to sell their devices for less than they cost to manufacture because they can close the shortfall by collecting licensing fees from third-party game publishers and from selling games themselves. Xbox games can sell for as high as $65.
One of the most expensive sets of components in the Xbox 360 Premium video game console is the IBM silicon that drives it. In fact the IBM chip and other supporting electronics in the Xbox 360 Premium cost an estimated $340 per console, according to iSuppli.
“A lot of people ask me which company will win in the video-game console market: Microsoft or Sony? I reply, ‘IBM,’” said Chris Crotty, senior analyst for consumer electronics at iSuppli.
IBM’s new Cell processor, jointly developed with Sony and Toshiba, will drive Sony’s PlayStation 3, due for launch in early 2006. Nintendo’s Revolution platform will also feature a custom IBM chip as its centerpiece.
Breaking Down the Cost
The single most expensive item in the Xbox 360 is the GPU (graphics processing unit), followed by memory and a Southbridge I/O (input/output) controller. According to iSuppli, the groundbreaking GPU, designed by ATI Technologies, costs an estimated $141 and includes embedded DRAM (dynamic random access memory) from NEC.
The main memory, which constitutes 512 megabytes of GDDR (graphics double data rate) DRAM from Samsung Electronics, accounts for another $65 of the cost of materials. The SiS Southbridge chip costs an estimated $12. Other semiconductors and electronic components make up the remaining cost of the $370 motherboard, according to iSuppli.
Add in the costs for the hard disk, DVD drive, enclosures, the RF (radio frequency) receiver board, power supply, wireless controller, cables, literature, and packaging, and the console reaches $525.
“It’s really not surprising for the initial cost of the console to approach or even exceed the retail price,” said Andrew Rassweiler, manager of iSuppli’s Teardown Analysis Service.
According to the report, savings on production costs should reach at least $50 per unit during next year.
The research firm expects the game console market, which dipped 9.1 percent in 2005 to 28 million units, to boom in 2006. The introduction of next-generation consoles will cause the market to reach nearly 40 million units in 2006, not including handheld game players.

High tech refers to "high technology," technology that is at the cutting-edge and the most advanced currently available. The adjective form is hyphenated: high-tech. There is also a style of architecture known as High tech.
There is no specific class of technology which is high-tech - the definition shifts over time, so products hyped as high-tech in the 1960s would now be considered, if not exactly low tech, then at least somewhat primitive. This fuzzy definition has led to marketing departments describing nearly all new products as high-tech.
