Air-powered car wins $5 million on TV show Shark Tank
Compressed Air Propelled Vehicle Idea Still Around

A start-up that wants to replace dirty fossil fuel cars with small air powered ones received $5 million in funding Friday on the ABC show Shark Tank.

Robert Herjavec, one of the investors on the show, pledged the money to Zero Pollution Motors. The company is responsible for an air-compression powered car called the AIRpod, according to Environment News Service. The car works like this: tanks of cold compressed air are heated, the air is then fed to the cylinders of a piston engine. The only byproduct is air, which is actually cleaner than it was going in due to the AIRpod's filters. The AIRpod tops out at 50 miles per hour with a range of 80 miles, making it essentially a city car. The tanks can be refilled in five minutes with a commercial-grade air compressor found at just about any gas station, according to Treehugger. It will cost drivers about $2 to fill up.

The company will use the $5 million to build their first factory in Hawaii. Zero Pollution Motors plans to build small plants to manufacture and sell the vehicles from the same location. With its congested traffic and reliance on expensive imported gas, Hawaii presents the perfect place to test a green machine.

Capitalization

Use the information to get a clearer idea of the price to sales and price to earnings ratios. Check and compare for signs of smooth and consistent or choppy growth.

Operations and competition

After gaining a fair idea of the revenue and profit margins the company earns, it is important to get a better perspective of its functions and the competition faced in the industry. You can always get learn about a company based on its competitors. Compare margins of the company in question with a few others in the industry, it will lend a clearer view of end market results on products developed.

Knowledge of the company’s business model is vital to understand what the company you’re looking to invest in actually does.

Value

It gets into the nitty-gritty of earnings and growth, and is an important step for knowing both the company of interest and its competitors. Check for volatility, and valuations founded on trailing revenues or current estimates. Differences seen in growth stock when compared to value stock give a sense of future expectations in the company. Best practice would be to get an estimate value of past few year earnings and compare them with a more accurate picture of company value.

Ownership and management

Another significant criterion that needs to be considered is management of the company. Check to see if the board is currently run by founding members or if several new additions have been made in the circle. Number of years that the company has been in function for is yet another aspect that should be considered. Research portfolios of current and founding members on the board, with regard to prior history and amount of stock shares distributed. Float stock owned by other institutions provide information on factors that might influence trade volumes. High partner ownership is always a good sign, while low ownership can be taken as a warning sign.

Y Combinator is well known for its successful startup incubation platform. Demo Day is a special day when all the companies incubated by Y Combinator present their ideas to a group of investors. Recently, on the Demo Day held in August, 85 startups- one of the largest groups ever incubated at Y Combinator got an opportunity to sell their ideas. A number of startups stood out and we had a tough time selecting five to introduce here. It had to be done, so here is a list of five startups that caught our attention.

Beep

Beep has created a WiFi device which connects all your speakers. The music is synchronized, so you will not to set up the system again when you go to a new room. You can also control the volume from one place. All this is enabled from a Beep app that works on Android and iOS. It works with Pandora and the company is currently trying to get other music services on board.

Bayes Impact

Think nonprofit and data science. That is Bayes Impact for you. The company has created a model that uses data science to solve the world's social challenges. The team selects a number of feasible and high impact challenges and turns them over to a group of 'fellows' who then come up with solutions to solve that issue.

A large number of companies around the world want to help solve social issues as part of their CSR but they are cautious. While they want to make a change, they also want their spending to show results. Bayes Impact assists such companies to select projects and also provide a channel to enable them to spend.

BitAccess

BitAccess has developed ATMs to buy/sell Bitcoins. If the cryptocurrency takes off, BitAccess stands to make a lot of money making ATMs that tender Bitcoins. Mark Cuban on Silicon Valley Venture Capital Investment

Mark Cuban is an entrepreneur with a net worth of $2.6 billion and owns NBA's Dallas Mavericks. He has appeared in several movies and numerous TV programs.

One of the latter is Shark Tank, where he appeared as a guest shark investor in Series 2 and has been a regular on the series ever since. This is a program where the goal is to persuade investors to go with an idea and a management team, with the ultimate aim to get seed investment to help expand the company. He therefore knows a few things about investing! He also knows a thing or two about Silicon Valley.

He has commented that a major difference between San Francisco's Silicon Valley, Silicon Alley (NYC) and Los Angeles is that in Silicon Valley "people are willing to buy companies" while in the others they simply want to invest in them. This results in different forms of exit which in turn leads to the Silicon Valley community being unique.

This is not a unique view of course, but coming from Mark it possesses a degree of authority. He compares the valuations of new starts between the different areas, saying that a Stanford MBA or Grad will get an $8 million valuation, in comparison with $4 million for a New Yorker with the same idea and $1 or $2 million for anywhere else. This gives a Silicon Valley startup an immediate advantage over similar starts elsewhere. Investors will tend to sink their funds in the highest valued of similar potential businesses.

He stated that venture capitalists in Silicon Valley were afraid of missing out on the next 'big thing' and so directed their funds to that area in preference to anywhere else in the country. This is not 100% correct, since a great deal of venture capital is distributed to the eastern areas of the USA and others outside of Silicon Valley. However, it may have a degree of accuracy if an investor is given the choice of two entrepreneurs with similar ideas – the Silicon Valley option will win most times.

Fundamentally, what Mark Cuban appears to be saying, is that if you have a good idea and base yourself in Silicon Valley you are practically sure to get start up cash, while those with the same idea in New York are not so sure.

Q: What is the best advice to build positive credit, why is it so important and when should you start learning about it?

A You have to have credit. You can’t build without credit. Start early, get credit, pay it back and always keep an eye on your credit rating.

Q: How would you prioritize saving within a paycheck and then within your overall budget?

A: The most important person to pay in life is yourself. It’s easier to take a little bit off every paycheck than to save a large amount.

Q: Was growing your net worth ever a top priority for you, and should it be for individuals?

A: Escaping poverty was my number one priority, not so much about building great wealth. Financial freedom is a better priority.

Financial freedom is the ability to do what you want, when you want, for as long as you want, with who you want, and that is an individual explanation for everybody. For my dad financial freedom was paying off his mortgage and two weeks in Florida every year.

Q: How can people further educate themselves to be fiscally healthy?

A: Leaders are readers. There is so much valuable information in the world, pick up a book.

Q: What is your ultimate goal for financial health?

A: It’s really about creating financial freedom, and at my level it’s about creating something that’s going to live beyond me in terms of a company, or taking over a market, or expanding globally; but even if you’re a small business owner, it’s doing the best you can do in your market. Greatness is a definition of how you choose to live your life.
