GPM can sure get ridiculous at times, eh ... still, i can think of a quick twelve names over there who are worth reading ... it's a minority of posters wasting space and time, imho ... two i'd zap right off, that would cut personal attacks by ninety per cent right there ... i've had it bookmarked since it started, and periodically catch up ... 594 new posts on it right now, lol
I know a little about a few PM stocks, nowhere near what some others do though, in either breadth or depth ... thing is though, a thread is ideally founded by a student, not a teacher, imho - it stands a far better chance of being vigourously open and educational that way ... i'm a little leery of the responsibility though, the time commitment ... also i find it hard to conceive of ever deleting a post, outside of privacy violations and the more boring of the spam, and that may be required here ... but i'll think about it, if nobody else does ... trick is to attract the russwinters, the Claude Cormiers, the Bob Johnsons
Bank Holiday today in the UK, not much happening - http://www.kitco.com/market/LFrate.html
Claire, Josef, hi - yeah it smells like a bit of a gold bull coming, doesn't it ... but you know, i thought that in the dog days of summer 1997 too, loaded up on juniors to catch the september rally -g- ... then again in taxloss time that year, thought the pickings just looked too attractive ... aaargh ... i've learned to trade them more carefully since, to take a more cynical view of market perceptions ... TA has been very useful in that, and lately especially the galleryview charts from these people - http://stockcharts.com/
Those goldbugger sites like the-privateer and gold-eagle can sure get you worked up into a buying mood, eh ... but they've been saying the same thing for years ... there are those who call the latter 'lead-ostrich' -g- .... still, looks like a little air could come out of the US dollar index, and if that got on a roll gold should do well, since it is in US dollars we tend to quantify it ... gold has risen in a number of other currencies ... on this site you can plot most currencies against Au, Ag, Pt - http://pacific.commerce.ubc.ca/xr/plot.html
Josef, in the header you specify no mention of individual stocks - so do you mean to develop this as a 'Gold Price Monitor' thread? ... the wording does sort of make it look like a links storage area only ... what do you think of a separate thread for 'precious metals stocks'? ... although, you know, i often feel copper plays get sort of neglected, even more than PMs have in this five-year bear of all metals .... but that might be too broad to head it 'mining stocks' ... i dunno, whaddaya think? ..... bienvenue, Claire ... salut
Thanks, Josef, the gold story becomes to be interesting....Still not convinced that time has come again for Gold, but who knows?
Pura Vida,
Claire
Can I humbly ask a ignorant question? What happend in 79-80 as I see the rally in gold happening at this time?
Time will soon be to another rally....or perhaps even gold will not be sheltered of the coming fall?
a chart you will enjoy & perhaps will want to print a few times & leave in public places - gold miners don't get no respect or air.
"...Money is the barometer of a society's virtue. When you see that
trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion--when you see
that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men
who produce nothing--when you see that money is flowing to those
who deal, not in goods, but in favors--when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don't protect you against them, but protect them against you--when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice--you may know that your society is doomed. Money is so noble a medium that it does not compete with guns and it does not make terms with brutality. It will not permit a country to survive as half-property, half-loot.
...Whenever destroyers appear among men, they start by destroying money, for money is men's protection and the base of a moral existence. Destroyers seize gold and leave to its owners a counterfeit pile of paper. This kills all objective standards and delivers men into the arbitrary power of an arbitrary setter of values. Gold was an objective value, an equivalent of wealth produced. Paper is a mortgage on wealth that does not exist, backed by a gun aimed at those who are expected to produce it. Paper is a check drawn by legal looters upon an account which is not theirs: upon the virtue of the victims. Watch for the day when it
becomes, marked: ', Account overdrawn...'

I would think it would also be acceptable to mention mine shut-downs(as when the Homestake mine was shut down) even if specific companies are named, as this impacts the supply / demand equation - correct?
Hi, I'm new to Ihub.
I've written 3 emails to AMEX / NAZDAQ, but they never said a word about when they would rebalance the HUI for BMG now being part of NEM.
If more would give them a buzz, they might get after it:
amexfeedback@amex.com
About "the rules", is this an OK mention of individual stocks?
http://options.nasdaq-amex.com/options/option_index_hui.stm
... the whole scoop from those who know ... i just had a conversation yesterday about the ^HUV, came across a quote on it, wondered what it was ... well it turns out it's the 'final settlement value symbol' for the ^HUI .... mystery solved
HUI components - http://mobydata.com/comp/hui.htm
'The AMEX Gold BUGS Index is composed of shares of the following issues:
Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM)
Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. (FCX C pfd)
ASA Ltd. (ASA)
Glamis Gold, Ltd. (GLG)
Battle Mountain Gold Co. (BMG)
Hecla Mining Co. (HL)
Bema Gold Corp. (BGO)
Homestake Mining Co. (HM)
Coeur d'Alene Mines Corp. (CDE)
Kinross Gold Corp. (KGC)
Echo Bay Mines Ltd. (ECO)
Newmont Mining Corp. (NEM)
Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. (FCX) '
Doesn't show the proportions or the calculations though ... lots of production of other metals by these companies, almost as much as in the ^XAU i think [not sure], but the idea with the ^HUI is to focus on companies who do not hedge beyond a year and a half of production ... or to try anyway, as much as possible.
Josef, i didn't know you had an interest in the metals ..... you've got Bob Johnson's site and sharefin's batch of urls already, between the two a person can pretty much find anything posted on the subject, eh ... just bookmarked the thread ... later ... cheers
