The Gulf Tragedy & Media Blackout - What To Do?
San Francisco Chronicle: Leaked Corexit Information
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/ybenjamin/detail??blogid=150&entry_id=67412
Chemistry is a fascinating science. Mix chemical A with chemical B, raise the temperature and bang... a new compound. It could be good. It could be bad. It could be nothing. To know something, it needs extensive testing. Simply testing in a flask or test tube is not enough. Proper testing takes time and is expensive.
The question to which no one knows the answer is how Corexit reacts to all the chemical and compound elements gushing from BP's volcanic crude oil disaster. It is a difficult question because there are hundreds of variables at play - Examples are pressure, water salinity, temperature, light, bioaccumulation, wave action, so many others and the hardest... time. There are also allegations that Corexit was responsible for "work injuries" and linked to possible deaths during the Exxon Valdez disaster.
Anyway, someone emailed me the "complete" assay of the "crude oil" spewing from the BP gusher. Take a look below.
Are there volunteer chemists who want to post on the comments section?

NALCO Corexit 9500 label warnings indicate you should not breathe the stuff in, get it in your eyes, skin or clothing or drink it.
We still don't know the Corexit proportion mix and there are uncorroborated tips coming into my mail box that the ingredient list is not complete. As a refresher the ingredients in Corexit are below.
NALCO COREXIT INGREDIENT LIST (Not written by a PR company)
1,2-Propanediol - The primary ingredient in aircraft anti-freeze and automotive anti-freeze. Used as the killing and preserving agent in pitfall traps, usually used to capture ground beetles. Mixing anti-freeze with heavy metals (iron, cobalt, copper, manganese, molybdenum, zinc, mercury, plutonium, lead, arsenic, aluminium, mercury, cadmium... see list of ingredients spewed by the volcanic oil gusher) makes it very toxic. Not recommended for your aquarium. Don't try going to a sushi restaurant, get salmon eggs, tobiko or uni and start soaking them in anti-freeze.
Ethanol, 2-butoxy-
Butanedioic acid, 2-sulfo-, 1,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl) ester, sodium salt (1:1) - Animal studies on rats and rabbits show depression, diarrhea, lethargy, irritation and hemorrhage of the gastrointestinal tract, erythema, edema, premature skin death, malformed fetuses, irritation, coarse skin and of course - death! Oh... it kills fish!
Sorbitan, mono-(9Z)-9-octadecenoate - NOAA CAMEO (Comparative Analysis Of Marine Ecosystem Organization) Chemicals page states that exposure to this chemical may cause "chemical pneumonitis", intestinal obstruction, and eye, skin and respiratory tract irritation.
Sorbitan, mono-(9Z)-9-octadecenoate, poly(oxy-1,2-ethanediyl) derivs.
Sorbitan, tri-(9Z)-9-octadecenoate, poly(oxy-1,2-ethanediyl) derivs - No toxicity warning found on this stuff. Yey!
2-Propanol, 1-(2-butoxy-1-methylethoxy) - The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances lists it as a suspected neurotoxicant.
Distillates (petroleum), hydrotreated light - Kerosene... also sold as GumOut Small Engine Gas Treatment I do not recommend you put GumOut in your aquarium... the fish might not be happy.
From available research we know Corexit 9527 (slightly different from Corexit 9500) is toxic to marine biota, including mussels, clams, sea urchins, marine fishes, copepods, and plankton.
So many unanswered questions!

To BP a scathing response by the EPA:
Dated May 26, 2010... I'm wondering what action, if any, has been taken since that time (6 more weeks)...
http://www.epa.gov/bpspill/dispersants/Rainey-letter-052610.pdf
"... We believe the response lacked sufficient analysis and focused more on defending your intial decisions than on analyzing possible better options.
Because we believe your analysis of potential alternative dispersants was insufficient, the EPA is performing its' own scientific verification of the data BP presented. In addition, the EPA will perform testing to determine whether there is indeed a less toxic, more effective dispersant available in the volumes necessary for a crisis of this magnitude. The EPA will be performing at least 2 types of assesments on Corexit 9500 and 9527 and other dispersants... "
"... Furthermore, as we discussed, the federal government, led by the Coast Guard, is reiterating its' instructions to BP to take immediate steps to significantly scale back the overall use of dispersants... by as much as 75% and possibly more... "
yuck!jus sick,sad,and pathetic imo
Tar balls in Texas mean oil hits all 5 Gulf states
Tar balls hit Texas beach; oil from blown-out ocean well washes up along all 5 Gulf states
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Tar-balls-in-Texas-mean-oil-apf-3680382396.html?x=0
Juan A. Lozano, Associated Press Writer, On Tuesday July 6, 2010, 9:11 am EDT TEXAS CITY, Texas (AP) -- More than two months after oil from BP's blown-out seafloor well first reached Louisiana, a bucket's worth of tar balls that washed onto a Texas beach means the crude has arrived in every Gulf state.
Oil is still on the move, but the fleet of skimmers tapped to clean the worst-hit areas of the Gulf of Mexico is not. A string of storms has made the water too choppy for the boats to operate for more than a week off Florida, Alabama and Mississippi, even though the gusher continues.
The number of tar balls discovered in Texas is tiny compared to what has coated beaches in other Gulf states. Still, it provoked the quick dispatch of cleaning crews and a vow that BP PLC will pay for the trouble.
"Any Texas shores impacted by the Deepwater spill will be cleaned up quickly and BP will be picking up the tab," Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson said in a news release.
The oil's arrival in Texas was predicted Friday by an analysis from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which gave a 40 percent chance of crude reaching the area.
"It was just a matter of time that some of the oil would find its way to Texas," said Hans Graber, a marine physicist at the University of Miami and co-director of the Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing.
About five gallons of tar balls were found Saturday on the Bolivar Peninsula, northeast of Galveston, said Capt. Marcus Woodring, the Coast Guard commander for the Houston/Galveston sector. Two gallons were found Sunday on the peninsula and Galveston Island, though tests have not yet confirmed the oil's origin.
Woodring said the consistency of the tar balls indicates they could have been spread to Texas water by ships that have worked out in the spill. But there's no way to confirm how they got there.
Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski said he believed the tar balls were a fluke, rather than a sign of what's to come.
"This is good news," he said. "The water looks good. We're cautiously optimistic this is an anomaly."
Hurricane Alex, which blew through the Gulf last week and made landfall along the border between Texas and Mexico, may have played a small role in bringing the oil ashore in Texas by increasing the westerly current near land, Graber said. But it was more likely due to normal coastal currents and local weather patterns.
NOAA scientists are looking at local weather, Hurricane Alex and Gulf vessels as possible sources for the tar balls, agency spokeswoman Monica Allen said Monday.
The distance between the western reach of the tar balls in Texas and the most eastern reports of oil in Florida is about 550 miles. Oil was first spotted on land near the mouth of the Mississippi River on April 29.
The spill is reaching deeper into Louisiana. Strings of oil were seen Monday in the Rigolets, one of two waterways that connect the Gulf with Lake Pontchartrain, the large lake north of New Orleans.
"So far it's scattered stuff showing up, mostly tar balls," said Louisiana Office of Fisheries Assistant Secretary Randy Pausina. "It will pull out with the tide, and then show back up."
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said assets would be deployed to protect the Lake Pontchartrain basin.
Pausina said he expected the oil to clear the passes and move directly into the lake, taking a backdoor route to New Orleans.
The news of the spill's reach comes at a time when most of the offshore skimming operations in the Gulf have been halted by choppy seas and high winds. A tropical system that had been lingering off Louisiana flared up Monday afternoon, bringing heavy rain and winds.
Last week, the faraway Hurricane Alex idled the skimming fleet off Alabama, Florida and Mississippi with choppy seas and stiff winds. Now they're idled by the smaller storms that could last well into this week.
Officials have plans for the worst-case scenario: a hurricane barreling up the Gulf toward the spill site. But the less-dramatic weather conditions have been met with a more makeshift response.
Skimming across the Gulf has scooped up about 23.5 million gallons of oil-fouled water so far, but officials say it's impossible to know how much crude could have been sucked up in good weather because of the fluctuating number of boats and other variables.
Jerry Biggs, a commercial fisherman in Pass Christian, Miss., who has had to shut down because of the spill, is now hiring out his 13 boats and 40-man crew to BP for cleanup. He said skimming is severely hampered by the weather.
"This isn't going away. This isn't a sneeze or a hiccup. This is diarrhea for a long time," he said. "My lifestyle is screwed. It's over. The thing that I love the most I'm not going to be able to do anymore."
The British company has now seen its costs from the spill reach $3.12 billion, a figure that doesn't include a $20 billion fund for damages the company created last month.
The storms have not affected drilling work on a relief well BP says is the best chance for finally plugging the leak. The company expects drilling to be finished by mid-August.
Associated Press writers Tom Breen and Mary Foster in New Orleans and Brendan Farrington in Pass Christian, Miss., contributed to this report.

Leaked Reports Expose BP's Safety Record
A damning investigation by ProPublica finds a pattern of neglect and corner-cutting at the oil giant.
http://www.newswek.org/2010/06/08/new-report-reveals-bp-s-long-history-of-safety-problems.html?from=rss

Boats battle to put out a fire on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig on April 21, 2010--the day after it exploded, killing 11
My observation: The only reason this fire went out was that the rig melted and collapsed to the bottom of the Gulf...
BP repeatedly disregarded safety problems, according to a new damning investigation from ProPublica that was copublished with The Washington Post. Documents about internal safety investigations leaked to ProPublica by "a person close to the company" show a pattern of neglect and a culture skewed toward silencing whistle-blowers.
The investigations described instances in which management flouted safety by neglecting aging equipment, pressured employees not to report problems, and cut short or delayed inspections to reduce production costs.
The first set of reports center on the firm's Alaska operations, and were put together by an internal committee and external lawyers in 2001, 2004, and 2007. The 2004 report found "a pattern of the company intimidating workers who raised safety or environmental concerns" and that "managers shaved maintenance costs by using aging equipment for as long as possible." In 2006, the report points out, the 2000 Prudhoe Bay pipeline spill was blamed on a corroded pipeline.
But the problems extended further than Alaska. In 2002 the firm was found to be falsifying inspections of fuel storage tanks in California. They settled a lawsuit by the South Coast Air Quality Management District for $100 million.
In 2005, the ProPublica report found, in an investigation into an explosion at a Texas City refinery that killed 15 people, that "significant process safety issues exist at all five U.S. refineries, not just Texas City." In a pattern that now seems familiar, a BP spokesperson at the time said it would update its safety systems. "But last year, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration fined the firm $87 million for not improving safety at that same Texas plant."
NEWSWEEK's Michael Isikoff and Michael Hirsh reported last month that Environmental Protection Agency investigators had wanted to charge top corporate officers who, "they were convinced, had knowledge of the safety deficiencies at Texas City and failed to take corrective action." That request was turned down by the Bush Justice Department—part of a pattern of lax oversight. As the NEWSWEEK report noted, BP has spent tens of millions on lobbying while it fends off accusations about poor safety practices.
An investigation into the Prudhoe leak in Alaska was thwarted when BP responded to a subpoena with 62 million pages of documents—a familiar tactic designed to observe the letter of the law while making it hard for investigators to get any real information, according to the NEWSWEEK report. When EPA special agents continued to pursue the action despite this, they were stopped—this time by federal prosecutors seeking a wider deal with BP.
The damning revelations, and regulatory failures, go on, as the new ProPublica piece found. Right up to Deepwater Horizon, where "sensors and their shutoff systems were not operating," and a "backstop mechanism that should have prevented the engines from running wild apparently failed—and so did the air-intake valves that were supposed to close if gas entered the engine room." A mechanic also testified that "the engine room wasn't equipped with a gas alarm system that could have shut off the power."
On April 20 the rig exploded, killing 11 people. And we all know what happened after that.

GM bro seen this comin lol..Oil Spill Stock Scams—Don’t Get Cleaned Out by False Cleanup Claims
The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico poses more than an environmental and economic threat to the region. It also poses a financial threat to investors in the form of scams promising financial gains from investments in companies that claim to be involved in cleanup operations.
Millions of dollars are being spent daily on short-term cleanup of the spill, which began in April 2010 with a blowout at an oil-drilling platform off the coast of Louisiana. The cost of long-term remediation remains unknown given the uncertainty about the extent of damage to the environment, the fishing industry and tourism.
The staff of the Securities and Exchange Commission and FINRA are issuing this alert to warn investors about potential scams that exploit the Gulf oil spill and related cleanup efforts. While some of the companies touting their role in the cleanup may be legitimate, others could be bogus operations that are only looking to clean out unsuspecting investors.
In a recent action, on May 25, the SEC suspended trading in shares of ACT Clean Technologies Inc., of Huntington Beach, Calif. The Commission took this action because of questions about the accuracy and adequacy of publicly disseminated information concerning, among other things: (1) British Petroleum's purported expression of interest in using a so-called oil fluidizer technology purportedly licensed to ACT's wholly-owned subsidiary for use in cleanup operations in the Gulf of Mexico; and (2) the purported results of field tests finding that the oil fluidizers are effective for use in cleanup efforts in the Gulf of Mexico.
Spotting Potential Oil Spill Stock Scams
Some companies may issue press releases, or send unsolicited faxes or spam emails that might include:
*Claims to have products or technologies that are effective in remediating oil spills or restoring the eco-system
*Mention of contracts or expected contracts with BP, formerly British Petroleum, that will aid the cleanup effort
*Claims that the company is providing technical assistance or expertise to BP or to U.S. government agencies such as the Coast Guard or the Environmental Protection Agency
*Predictions of rapid, exponential sales growth
*Pressure to invest immediately
How to Avoid Getting Scammed
Here are some tips to avoid potential scams:
Investigate before you invest. Never rely solely on information contained in an unsolicited fax, email, text message or tweet—or in a blog post or online thread. It's easy for companies or their promoters to make glorified claims about product effectiveness, lucrative contracts, or the company’s revenues, profits or future stock price.
Find out who sent the message. Many companies and individuals that tout stocks are paid to do so by the company being touted. Examine the fine print for any statements indicating payments in cash or in stock for issuing the report or message.
Find out where the stock trades. Most unsolicited fax and spam recommendations involve stocks that do not meet the listing requirements of the major stock exchanges. Instead, they usually are quoted on the OTC Bulletin Board or in the Pink Sheets, which do not impose minimum qualitative standards. Many of the securities quoted on the OTC Bulletin Board or in the Pink Sheets trade infrequently, which can make it difficult to sell your shares. When shares on the OTC Bulletin Board or in the Pink Sheets do trade, they may move up or down in price very rapidly.
Read a company’s SEC filings. Most public companies file quarterly and annual reports with the SEC. Check the SEC’s EDGAR database to find out if the company is filing reports to the SEC, and read them. Be aware that registering securities and filing reports with the SEC does not mean the company will be a good investment.
Exercise some skepticism. Scammers are very adept at making their pitches appear real, including the use of slick videos and websites. Be extremely wary of any pitch that suggests immediate pay-offs, especially if the investment involves a start-up company or a product or service that is still in development.

ATLANTA, June 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Generation Zero Group, Inc. (the "Company") (OTC Bulletin Board:GNZR.ob - News) today announced that it has secured a license to control http://www.beach.org/. The Company intends to operate the domain as a portal for current information about the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the beach areas that are affected.
The oil spill has been headline news since the spill began more than seven weeks ago and http://www.beach.org/ will gather timely information with an unbiased presentation. The Company intends to build traffic to the website through the implementation of the technology it acquired from Find.com Acquisition, Inc. which utilizes search engine optimization and indexing on search engines. The website will also look to add user generated content by allowing people to upload photos from various beaches affected by the oil spill.
The Company anticipates that the website will be operational before the end of June 2010.
Commenting on http://www.beach.org/, Company Chief Executive Officer Matthew Krieg commented: "I believe Beach.org is another premium domain name that fits within our strategy. The term "Beach" is searched tens of millions of times per month on the major search engines. One of the results of the unfortunate oil spill in the Gulf is that beaches have become more prominent as the tourism interest has given way to the environmental concerns related to the oil spill.
My initial interest in beach.org was based on tourism and travel. When the oil spill incident occurred, we decided to change the focus to an information portal at least for so long as this oil spill and the aftermath continues. We hope that the oil spill situation is resolved as quickly as possible. After that time, we plan to refocus beach.org to a more commercial travel related website. However, until we refocus Beach.org, we plan to donate 5% of the gross revenue GNZR generates from the Beach.org website to not for profit causes dedicated to helping people and/or businesses impacted by this disaster."

Florida home prices were just starting to rebound a tad prior to this mess....looks like all bets are off...I know a couple people who thought they were buying at the low of the meltdown.....Wonder where the new bottom will be, or if it will be a steady drop because of the devistating effects it will have for years to come. WOW, we only have so much coastal real estate to go around......should see a nice hike tho for other coastal properties not affected by this spill. Nasty for BP...I hope they get hammered. Sure has been the catalyst for life beyond oil.
Home prices already being affected
Saw a guy on the news this morning.....Captain Steve or Mike....walked 2 feet out into the water, bent down and scooped up a handful of sandy/oily sludge......too little too late? Just ruining peoples lives down there.......expecting home prices on the coast to plummet they say......I think BP will eventually run out of money......then what? The Govt. may have to step in and help out...not looking good whatsoever

Gulf Coast Evacuation Scenario Summer/Fall 2010 Martial Law Alert!
http://beforeitsnews.com/news/78/024/Gulf_Coast_Evacuation_Scenario_Summer_Fall_2010_Martial_Law_Alert.html
Sun Jun 13 2010 12:55
SoCal Martial Law Alerts (SCMLA) has been in existence for a year and a half and this is our first MARTIAL LAW ALERT.
We have withheld putting out information on the Gulf oil spill for a variety of reasons, but there is now enough evidence for us to put together a fairly clear picture of what really happened, what may result and to warn people who live in the area.
THE SITUATION:
Due to toxic gases from the fractured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico, the possible off-gassing of the highly-toxic Corexit 9500 (the chemical dispersant used by BP in the oil spill clean-up), acid rain and various as-yet-unknown forms of environmental damage, we believe that the government will have no choice but to relocate millions of people away from the Gulf Coast. Those living in Florida are presently at the highest risk, but the danger also appears likely to spread to all Gulf Coast states east of Louisiana and possibly even to the entire Eastern half of the United States once hurricane season begins.
Greg Evensen, a retired Kansas Highway Patrolman, estimates that 30-40 million people would need to be evacuated away from the Gulf’s coastline (i.e. at least 200 miles inland). In order to accomplish this gargantuan feat, the federal government (through FEMA and other agencies) would most likely seek first to control and manage the transportation system and then operate relocation centers to manage evacuees. Toward this end, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has already declared the airspace over the oil spill site to be a no-fly zone until further notice. Various sources have indicated that local police, highway patrol, National Guard, US military and foreign troops may be involved in an operation to evacuate the Gulf Coast. In fact, the Governor of Louisiana has already requested evacuation assistance (i.e. National Guard) for his state from the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

In the first clip, MOP President Charles Diamond demonstrates how rapidly the MOP sorbent removes oil from the feathers of a bird. In the second he demonstrates cleaning up a spill on water. CBS will be airing news related to MOP and other products capable of helping to clean up the spill on Monday evenings for the next 3-4 weeks according to Mr. Axelrod.

Plateau Mineral Development, Inc.'s Technologies Can be Modified to Assist in Cleaning Oil Spills Such as the Current Spill in the Gulf of Mexico
5:28p ET May 3, 2010 (GlobeNewswire)
Plateau Mineral Development, Inc. (Pink Sheets:PMDP) announced today that its partner company, Environmental Solutions (EnSol), has a technology that can be modified to assist in cleaning up oil spills such as the current one in the Gulf of Mexico. While the EnSol technology would require some modifications to meet the exact needs, those changes would be minor.
EnSol's technology can be used to reclaim the oil and tar, whilst restoring the beaches. It would take in a volume of contaminated sand, dissociate the components, extracting the oil and tar, thereby allowing clean sand to be deposited back onto the beach.
Robert Matthews of Plateau Mineral Development, Inc., states, "The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and its negative environmental impact is of significant importance at present. It is our goal to eventually use the green, environmentally-friendly EnSol technologies in an effort to help with the clean-up process of this any future oil spills."

(Pink Sheets:PMDP - News), along with its partner, Plateau Mineral Development LLC, announced today that its partner in environmental programs, Environmental Solutions, LLC (EnSol) has successfully completed its report based on the environmental laboratory testing done over the summer months at the EnSol lab. The test was facilitated by Aubrey C. Williams Jr., PhD. Dr. Williams currently serves as an Assistant Professor at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and is a member of the Louisiana Academy of Science. He has given a series of presentations on various environmental topics, and has received a Department of Energy fellowship award for his master graduate research.
Dr. Williams states, "We are pleased with the results of the environmental testing. We have demonstrated reductions in polluted water totaling more than 90%. The water needs to be cleaned up before it is re-introduced into the St. John's river, and then into the lakes and oceans. We are proud to take part in cleaning up one of the earth's greatest natural resources."
