November 30, 2022 - 4 pm in Berlin, 7 am in New York, 8 pm in Beijing
How are we going to decarbonize trucking? Some people believe it can be done with batteries. Some people believe batteries are not the right solution for various reasons – and that fuel cells and hydrogen are the best way to power them.
One company that is developing both technologies in parallel is Nikola Motors. In the last two years, Nikola has introduced a battery electric truck into the market and developed a fuel cell electric truck called the “Tre” together with its partner Iveco.
In this free webinar, Nikola Global Chief Engineer Christian Appel will give you an overview of their fuel cell truck, share technical details, outline their hydrogen strategy and answer your questions.
You will learn:
• What does the Nikola Tre look like both on the outside and “under the hood”?
• What are the technical specifications of the Nikola Tre?
• What hydrogen storage technology does Nikola use? What are their plans for the future?
• What are the results from testing the vehicles with customers including Anheuser-Busch and Walmart?
• When will the vehicle be available on the market? Where will it be available?
• What are the priorities from Nikola’s perspective?

Electric stuff: Tesla preps for first Semi deliveries as it breaks into Class 8 market
Nov. 27, 2022 11:58 AM ET
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) will hold an event on December 1 at the Gigafactory in Nevada to commemorate the first deliveries of the all-electric Semi Class 8 truck.
Ahead of the event, Elon Musk said the Tesla (TSLA) team completed a 500-mile drive with a Tesla Semi weighing in at 81K pounds. The Class 8 entry is estimated to charge up to 70% level in 30 minutes and consumes less than 2 kWh per mile. The Semi truck is powered by four independent motors on the rear axle that can provide a 60 mph speed up a 5% grade. The drag coefficient is said to be 0.36 vs. the average truck-trailer combo coefficient of 6.08.
Tesla (TSLA) has a target to produce 50K Tesla Semi units a year in 2024. That tally would be impressive for the Class 8 market, where industry heavyweight Freightliner (DTROUY) has sold between 70K to 100K trucks a year recently.
PepsiCo (PEP) is expected to be one the first customers to received the electric truck. However, PepsiCo is not the only beverage company with a plan to use electric trucks for deliveries. Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD) has ordered electric trucks from BYD Company (OTCPK:BYDDF) and Nikola (NKLA), as well as placing a deposit with TSLA for the Semi. Meanwhile, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) recently started using battery trucks from the Renault for local trips in Belgium.
What to watch: The Tesla (TSLA) event later in the week could be a catalyst for the stock if it leads to discussion on more corporate deposits and a future revenue stream. Shares of Tesla have been active in the past the day before and after product reveal events. Read about more events scheduled for next week in Seeking Alpha's Catalyst Watch.
Here comes Tesla to challenge Nikola.

General Motors Invests in Potentially Cheap Green Hydrogen Production
24 Nov 2022, By: Florin Amariei
https://www.autoevolution.com/news/general-motors-invests-in-potentially-cheap-green-hydrogen-production-204741.html
General Motors (GM) partnered with a company that specializes in electrolyzer production. Together, the two companies will develop the means necessary for selling green hydrogen and fuel-cell vehicles (FCEV). Here’s what’s going on.
There is no doubt that most of the world’s developed economies are trying their best to find a sustainable way toward the decarbonization of the transportation sector. Replacing fossil fuel-hungry cars with all-electric ones seems to be what decision-makers want. Some countries already have bans in place for the sale of internal combustion engines (ICE) from a certain point forward, while others try to encourage the acquisition of EVs through different kinds of incentives.
But the entire automotive future cannot rely only on battery-electric vehicles. Various industries need to have options. Passenger car buyers would also benefit from having a choice to make, other than just seeing their favorite ICE vehicle becoming illegal or unusable due to possible fuel shortages.
Enter hydrogen and fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs). There is a silent competition going on for hydrogen, and the U.S. tries not to lose it. Germany, China, and Australia are pushing toward developing FCEVs, but they’re not making a big case out of it. Neither does Japan, which has Toyota working with hydrogen for a while now.
General Motors understood this could become a profitable and vital market sector. So, it set up the Hydrotec. This division is developing “the affordable hydrogen fuel cell power solution for land, air, and sea applications.” Now it intends to continue the research together with Nel – the company that set up for the first time a fully automated alkaline electrolyzer production line.
Together, the two companies intend to produce renewable (or green) hydrogen, which could have multiple cost-competitive applications.
GM will supply its Hydrotec fuel cell, while Nel will bring its electrolyzer technology to the table. Their combined efforts could lead to green hydrogen that has the potential to be competitive with fossil fuel prices. If successful, this would turn Nel into a desirable green hydrogen manufacturer. That’s why the company decided to compensate GM for the development work. It will also pay a license after the commercialization of the final product.
GM and Nel intend to access public funds, according to WardsAuto. The U.S. Department of Energy continues to accept applications for the development of green hydrogen production. At the same time, several states are trying to attract investments by setting up favorable conditions for companies active in this field.
This is painful watching this daily go down??
Wonder if the railroad strike will enhance opportunity here for NKLA?
On the occasion of the recent edition of Ecomondo, Europe's leading trade fair event dedicated to technological and industrial innovation in an eco-sustainable key, LC3 Trasporti (https://www.lc3trasporti.com/it/?lang=en), the Eugubina-based company leader in green logistics, in partnership with Iveco for the supply of the first heavy-duty vehicles and with Edison Next (https://www.edison.it/en/edison-next) for the supply of the molecule, today announced an agreement for the future road deployment in Italy of the first hydrogen-powered articulated heavy-duty vehicles. The dispensers made available by energy player Edison Next will be used to power five Nikola Tre (article 29 Settembre 2021 : https://www.dieselweb.eu/iveco-nikola-stabilimento-ulm/) Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (Fcev), for service to LC3 Trasporti customers. The vehicle's stock capacity of about 70 kilograms of hydrogen at a pressure of 700 bar, combined with an expected refueling time of about 20 minutes, allows for diesel-like performance and a travel range of up to 800 kilometers.

Added today ….. just 99. But that’s 99 more than I had. Someday.

The Biden Administration Signs Ambitious Global Agreement to Accelerate Zero-Emission Transport

USA supports path to 100% zero-emission new truck and bus sales by 2040
SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt, Nov. 17, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- The Biden Administration announced a landmark endorsement of zero-emission transport today at COP27. The United States signed the Global Memorandum of Understanding (Global MOU) on Zero-Emission Medium-and Heavy-Duty Vehicles, an international agreement supporting a path to 100% new zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicle (MHDV) sales by 2040 with a targeted floor of 30% new zero-emission MHDV sales by 2030.
Co-led by CALSTART's Drive to Zero™ program and the Netherlands, the Global MOU was previously signed by 16 other countries including Austria, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, Uruguay, and Wales. More countries are expected to be announced at a joint CALSTART/Netherlands COP27 event later today (additional details at www.globaldrivetozero.org). The non-binding Global MOU has also been endorsed by local governments, manufacturers, and suppliers including (but not limited to) California (United States of America), Québec (Canada), Telangana (India), Berlin Partner for Business and Technology, Scania, Dannar, Lion, Heineken, DHL, and more.
The US joins nations around the world working to support a path to 100% zero-emission MHDV sales by 2040.
"As a global leader in logistics and delivery services, DHL Express has long recognized the important role that our industry plays in decarbonizing the transportation sector. The Global MOU and the growing list of signatory countries and endorsing organizations signing on at COP27 is a significant and welcome development. We look forward to working with these governments and peers as we deploy zero-emission vehicles and the necessary infrastructure to make them a reality," said Greg Hewitt, CEO, DHL Express, US.
This declaration follows a recent bicameral letter, led by Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) alongside 15 other lawmakers, urging President Joe Biden to commit to driving climate emission reductions from trucks and buses.
"Decarbonizing commercial transport vehicles is critical to meeting our overall carbon emissions targets. Congress made huge investments to supercharge America's manufacturing of electric and zero-emission vehicles in both the Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act. By committing to this goal alongside many other nations, the United States is affirming that we are serious about meeting our responsibility on climate and protecting our children's future," said Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM).
The lawmakers assert transitioning to zero-emission transportation will improve air quality and enhance national security by "reducing our reliance on foreign oil and shielding consumers from disruptive volatility in fuel costs."
Making the switch to zero-emission MHDVs comes with multiple operational and business benefits including lower maintenance and fueling costs, improved handling, and lower vibration for drivers, as well as healthier air in the communities these vehicles serve. By transitioning to zero-emission vehicles, fleet owners and operators can receive a $40,000 commercial vehicle credit as part of the Inflation Reduction Act, stimulate job creation, and drive economic growth in the manufacturing sector. Zero-emission MHDVs can also help prevent dangerous air pollution that contributes to premature deaths, asthma attacks, lung cancer, and other cardiovascular diseases.
"The United States sends a powerful message today to the international community that it will work strategically and collaboratively to transition the commercial vehicle sector to zero emissions. Today's action will advance zero-emission vehicle manufacturing, boost our economy, and create good paying jobs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions," said John Boesel, CEO of CALSTART.

A highway service station with EV and Truck recharging will require the same electricity demand as a small town. It's why PLUG is pushing hard to install behind the meter stationary fuel cells (1-3MW) to charge trucks. Easier to ship in hydrogen than build the transmission lines and substations required to power small town.

GLS, FERCAM, LC3 and SMET are the players that have signed agreements with IVECO for the delivery of electric trucks with a range of up to 500 km. The announcements at Ecomondo, where IVECO also shows off the eDaily in the body and van versions.
In all probability we will soon see the first Nikola TRE BEV (full electric) cross Italy. The electric heavy developed by Nikola's Americans thanks to the joint venture with IVECO (the basis of the truck is that of the S-WAY) has attracted the attention of some of the main Italian transport companies, and todayat EcomondoIVECO has unveiled the names of these realities, evidently sensitive to the issue of reducing emissions even in the long haul.
The Nikola Tre in Italy thanks to GLS, FERCAM, LC3 and SMET
GLS, FERCAM3 and SMET are the players that have signed agreements with IVECO for the delivery of electric trucks. Specifically, GLS, a transport and logistics company, will see two Nikola Tre BEVs involved in the electrification of the fleet, which will be delivered to the D'Innocenti Group and A.E.V. to be then introduced into their network. The South Tyrolean FERCAM have ordered a Nikola TRE BEV, while five Nikola fully electric trucks will be available to LC3, a company that strongly believes in long-haul electrification. Finally, SMETchose two Nikola Tre BEVs to make its fleet even greener.
Renewing our participation in Ecomondo, a show that, like IVECO, continues to maintain a strong focus on sustainable transport, is a source of great pride. We are pleased to present the eDAILY, our ever-lasting, simply electric Daily and the hydrogen-powered Nikola Tre, in this setting, together with all the news related to the electrification of our products and dedicated services aimed at optimizing the productivity of our customers, all to create a new and efficient ecosystem of sustainability, Because the future is today
Massimiliano Perri, General Manager IVECO Italian Market
In general, IVECO's participation in this year's edition of Ecomondo in Rimini is particularly oriented towards electrification. On display the highlights of the recent German experience at the IAA in Hanover: the eDaily and the Nikola Tre in the FCEV version, or with fuel cells to extend the autonomy of the vehicle. In Rimini, until Friday 11, it is possible to admire two eDaily – a chassis cab with a wheelbase of 3,450 mm and a van with 10.8 cubic meters of volume – with 190 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. Up to 400 kilometers the range provided in the version with 111 kWh capacity batteries. eDaily is also available in the test drive area of the fair.

I will listen to the recording or at least read the transcript.
The PR yesterday seemed to imply they weren't shipping to paying customers - but now they have an order they can ship against at least.
So it would seem that production rates will be kept low until the end customers can get their infrastructure sorted out. Which leads to "back to base" trips and bringing one depot on line at a time.
Everything takes time and those IRA and state incentives are so need to kick start this market and address the diesel pollution we all see.
UK, I listened to the conference call, and I am sorry to say that overall, it was quite depressing, and thus the sharp drop in share price. I am hoping that it is just an attempt by management to be overly pessimistic and lower expectations, which they will likely and easily beat in the future. But only 14 BEVs delivered to customers so far is relatively low (out of 104 produced thus far, with 90 in dealer inventory).
The problem seems to be customers reluctant to invest in the required recharging infrastructure for BEVs, and/or the headwinds from macroeconomics factors (e.g., inflation and rising interest rates). I hope that with the IRA incentives becoming effective at the end of 2022, that things will gradually improve.
Cannot wait for the forecast for Q4 deliveries and 1H 2023.
They have moved forward this quarter in many areas which is great to see.
Wondering when their cost of sales will approach the revenue per truck.

PHOENIX, Nov. 3, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Nikola Corporation (Nasdaq: NKLA), a global leader in zero-emissions transportation and energy supply and infrastructure solutions, today reported financial results for the quarter ended September 30, 2022.
On September 19, 2022, as a part of our joint venture with IVECO, Nikola revealed the European version of the Tre FCEV beta on the IAA main stage. Nikola plans to begin production of the EU version of the Tre FCEV in the second half of 2024.
"During the third quarter we continued to produce and deliver Nikola Tre BEVs to dealers and customers," said Nikola President, Michael Lohscheller. "We also made significant advancements in developing our energy business, announcing our intent to develop access of up to 300 metric-tons per day of hydrogen and up to 60 stations by 2026, and our collaboration with E.ON in Europe."
Energy Business Announcements
On October 20, we announced our intent to develop access of up to 300 metric-tons per day (TPD) of hydrogen and up to 60 dispensing stations by 2026, and highlighted the potential benefits to our business model from the Inflation Reduction Act. This supply is expected to be supported by the previously announced projects referenced below, which are being developed with our partners.
- Buckeye, AZ Production Hub – phased development up to 150 metric-TPD
- Terre Haute, IN Wabash Valley Resources – 50 metric-TPD
- Crossfield, Alberta TC Energy – 60 metric-TPD
- Clinton County, PA KeyState – 100 metric-TPD
We are negotiating a robust portfolio of hydrogen supply opportunities across North America. Further details will be provided following execution.
On September 29, we acquired a parcel of land in Buckeye, AZ with the intent to build a hydrogen production hub with our partners. We are undergoing zoning and permitting requirements and have ordered long lead-time equipment including electrolyzers and liquefaction equipment.
On August 4, we announced the locations of three hydrogen dispensing stations in California. The stations will be located in Colton, Ontario, and a location servicing the Port of Long Beach. California is a launch market for Nikola and these stations intend to support key customers to help advance the state's efforts to decarbonize the transport sector.
On September 16, we announced our collaboration with E.ON with the objective to establish hydrogen supply and related infrastructure to meet the demand of customers in Europe. E.ON is one of Europe's largest operators of energy networks and energy infrastructure. The strategic partnership is expected to offer customers an integrated mobility solution to promote the use of hydrogen. Both parties have signed a term sheet to underpin the collaboration and will be negotiating a definitive agreement to finalize the terms.
Strong Showing at IAA
On September 19, as a part of our joint venture with IVECO, we revealed our European version of the Tre BEV and FCEV beta on the IAA main stage. There was a high level of interest in our FCEVs, which we believe further validates our business plan and the role we will play in the global transition to the hydrogen economy. We plan to begin production of EU version Tre BEVs in the second half of 2023, and EU version Tre FCEVs in the second half of 2024.
Tre FCEV Update
During the third quarter, we continued our FCEV pilot with TTSI and began pilot testing with Walmart. To date the trucks have logged over 9,700 and 5,500 miles respectively. In Q3 we completed six beta trucks. Development testing on the beta trucks has begun at various locations. We expect to complete 17 beta trucks for the full year by the end of Q4.
Tre BEV Update
During the third quarter, we produced 75 Nikola Tre BEVs delivering 63 of those to dealers. We began pilot testing with both SAIA and Walmart logging over 1,600 miles and 2,700 miles to date, respectively. On November 2, we announced Zeem Solutions executed a Purchase Order for 100 Nikola Tre BEVs.
Coolidge, Arizona Manufacturing Facility
In Coolidge, we are currently producing three trucks on one shift and have the capability to produce five trucks per shift. We remain on track to complete the Phase 2 assembly expansion by the end of Q1 2023, at which time our production capacity will be up to 20,000 units per year. Upon completion of Phase 2, the facility will be capable of producing the BEV and FCEV on the same line, in addition to the Bosch Fuel Cell Power Module.
Completed Acquisition of Romeo Power
On October 14, we completed the acquisition of Romeo Power, further solidifying our commitment to transforming the transportation industry.
