Five Double-Your-Money Tech Survivors
Jim Jubak
Companies such as Lucent Technologies, JDSU and Vitesse Semiconductor -- all still-struggling survivors of the great tech wreck of 2000 -- have turned so many corners their stocks should be on wheels. Over the last five years and counting, each pickup in sales has been a momentary blip followed by another collapse in growth. Each reorganization has promised a return to black ink from red, but each has been followed by another wave of cost- cutting as revenue continued to decline. So it's with trepidation that I say, right now the stocks of five of these companies, each selling for way less than $5, are solid speculative buys.

Cash...You are right in the momentum play. LU has many an investor confused. Great PRs and nothing with the PPS that would make any one jump up and down. Yet, I feel it is one that could explode and catch investors by suprise. Got in the stock originally and made a nice profit. Got in again when it was $1.35. Posted that price on a couple IHub boards -- doubt if anyone from them thought it was a good deal, as none ever said they bought any.
Currently have shares which were purchased on 2/14/2005 and, also have 60 contracts of - LU JAN 2007 5 Call. Don't buy frivolously in the market. Expect LU to pay off before June of 2006.

Enhanced Telecommunications Corporation Selects Riverstone Networks and Lucent Technologies to Enable IPTV and VoIP Services
SANTA CLARA, Calif. and MURRAY HILL, N.J., Oct. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Riverstone Networks (RSTN.PK) and Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced that Enhanced Telecommunications Corporation (ETC), an Indiana-based Independent Operating Company (IOC), has selected the two companies to enhance its network to enable new Ethernet and IP-based services, including IPTV and VoIP, to residential and business customers. The equipment, provided by Lucent as a Riverstone global reseller, will enable ETC to offer new services to subscribers in four Indiana counties, further enhancing ETC's portfolio.
ETC, which currently features both wireline and wireless voice services, DSL Internet access, security systems and web-based management systems, will deploy RS 8000 Ethernet aggregation routers from Riverstone to migrate its ATM infrastructure to Ethernet. This migration will not only give ETC the bandwidth and multiservice support necessary to expand its service offerings, but will also allow it to reduce operational expenses by converging its multiple networks onto a common Ethernet infrastructure, serving both residential and business services. The combination of ETC's progressive services and a highly efficient network, in turn, will help the small carrier remain competitive.
"After a thorough and comprehensive lab trial of multiple Ethernet solutions, Riverstone proved to be the best choice," said Chad Dieselberg, Engineering Manager for ETC. "The RS 8000 provides not only an economical and efficient service delivery platform, but a highly reliable and scalable one too. That's important because our customers, residential and business alike, demand value for their dollars and that means our network has to be able to support high-quality, next-generation services at a reasonable price."
"This contract highlights the benefits Lucent and Riverstone are delivering to operators," said Inbar Lasser-Raab, Vice President, Marketing, Riverstone Networks. "Riverstone and Lucent are committed to working together to meet our customers' needs as they evolve their networks to support Ethernet capabilities."
Riverstone's RS family of MPLS-based Ethernet routers provides a common carrier-grade feature set over a range of platforms, both small and large. As a result, smaller carriers can enjoy true carrier-grade reliability and Quality of Service (QoS) without having to super-size their networks.
In March 2005, Riverstone received a U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service (RUS) listing for both its RS and Riverstone 15000 product lines. Designed to increase the rate of broadband deployments in smaller communities, a RUS listing permits IOCs and Rural Local Exchange Carriers (RLECs) to deploy these products using RUS Broadband Loan and Grant programs. Recently, Riverstone became one of the first equipment vendors to receive carrier Ethernet compliance certification from the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF).
Riverstone Networks, Inc. is a leading provider of carrier Ethernet infrastructure solutions for business and residential communications services. Riverstone's Ethernet router portfolio uniquely delivers the reliability that allows carriers to meet the triple play -- voice, video and data -- service requirements of their customers in a cost-effective and scalable way. Riverstone allows carriers to offer new services over existing revenue-generating networks permitting them to evolve to a next generation Ethernet infrastructure.
Lucent Technologies designs and delivers the systems, services and software that drive next-generation communications networks. Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs Demonstrates First Transmission of 100 Gb/s Ethernet-Over-Optical
MURRAY HILL, N.J. and GLASGOW, Scotland, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - - In two papers presented to the European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication (ECOC) in Scotland today, Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) Bell Labs announced the first reported transmissions of 100 Gigabit per second (Gb/s) Ethernet over optical. These results are a significant milestone in the industry's march towards migrating to 100Gb/s data networking.
"This work is a major first. We have broken through the ceiling in transmission rates and described two techniques that could help implement 100G Ethernet over optical systems," said Martin Zirngibl, director, Bell Labs. "With more and more enterprises moving to 10Gb/s transmission, carriers are looking to implement 100Gb/s Ethernet in the Metro Area Network (MAN) as a way to efficiently multiplex and transmit high amounts of data in its native Ethernet format."
Today, Ethernet signals are transported over 10Gb/s and, occasionally, over 40Gb/s SONET connections. This Bell Labs work is aimed at producing 100Gb/s Ethernet-over-optical transmission.
The Bell Labs research team was able to deliver a 107 Gb/s optical data stream, representing 100 Gb/s of data transmission plus a standard 7 percent overhead for error correction, using the following two technological approaches:
* Duobinary Signaling: This technique uses three electrical signal levels,
- positive, negative and zero - to represent a binary signal for
communications transmission. Duobinary signals require less bandwidth
than traditional NRZ (non-return to zero) signals. The application of
this bandwidth-compressing format enabled the creation of an optical
107-Gb/s serial data stream using a commercially available optical
modulator (rated for 40 Gb/s).
* Single-Chip Optical Equalizer: Integrated optical equalizers invented by
Bell Labs researchers two years ago, can compensate for transmission
impairments and also for the limited modulator bandwidth in a
commercially available NRZ system. NRZ is the least complex optical data
format to generate. In order to demonstrate an optical 107-Gb/s NRZ
signal, Bell Labs designed a single chip optical equalizer that
compensated for almost all inter-symbol interference arising from
modulator bandwidth limitations in an optical 107 Gb/s NRZ electronic
time division multiplexing (ETDM) transmitter. As with the duobinary
approach, Bell Labs researchers used a commercially available 40-Gb/s
optical modulator in combination with the optical equalizer to generate
a 107-Gb/s optical NRZ data stream.
The ECOC-submitted papers on both of these approaches are available upon request by sending an e-mail to pbenedict@lucent.com.

Lucent Technologies Bell Labs and mPhase Technologies Announce Milestone in Magnetometer Development
MURRAY HILL, N.J. & LITTLE FALLS, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)----Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) Bell Labs and mPhase Technologies (OTC:XDSL) today announced a milestone in their joint magnetometer project with the development of an un-cooled metal detector prototype. This prototype is the first working metal detector using technology pioneered by Bell Labs, and is a significant step towards the development of a device that will be theoretically 1000 times more magnetically sensitive than comparable solutions available on the market today.
Magnetometers detect changes or disturbances in magnetic fields and derive information such as presence, size, location and orientation of objects, such as metal, that have magnetic properties.
mPhase has licensed this magnetometer technology from Bell Labs and is working to commercialize the new class of magnetometers for use as un-cooled ultra-sensitive sensors for a host of possible defense and civilian applications including automated battlefield sensors and integrated compass and direction functionality in handheld devices.
The joint announcement was made at this week's Technology Review Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT.
"This is a disruptive technology," said Ron Durando, CEO, mPhase Technologies. "These magnetometers can be used in metal detection and perimeter security applications for defense and homeland security. They can also be used in healthcare systems and retail security detection like RFID tags."
"Bell Labs advanced nanotechnology and MEMS research and manufacturing capability position us to deliver cutting edge applications and products either directly or through our partnerships," said Dave Bishop, vice president of Physical Research for Bell Labs. "Our close working relationship with mPhase is a first step towards the commercialization of this promising technology."
The most sensitive of commercially-available magnetometers, called Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) can measure extremely small magnetic fields, such as the flux or force of magnetism on a single human red blood cell with a diameter about 7 microns. In practice, this level of sensitivity is only possible at the temperature where liquid helium boils, 455 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, limiting the applications in which they can be used.
This magnetometer prototype, which incorporates Bell Labs-designed micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), requires no cooling to achieve very high magnetic sensitivity. Additionally, as the sensing component is manufactured through a silicon-based process, production costs are expected to be significantly lower than with traditional magnetometers.
"We are planning to develop devices with applications in defense and commercial markets that were previously not practical with current technology," Durando said. "There are a number of companies interested in working with us across a range of new applications made possible by the size and sensitivity breakthrough."
mPhase is a Showcase exhibitor at the 5th Annual Emerging Technology Conference, the premiere conference for innovators and key leaders in technology and business held on MIT's Cambridge, Mass. campus September 28-29, 2005. "We are very excited to have mPhase, a leading nanotechnology company and a pioneer in the field as a member of the Showcase," commented Vincent Caprio, Event Director for NanoBusiness 2005 and The Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT.

Fonix Telecom Completes Deployment of Next Generation IP Network with Lucent Technologies Solution; Fonix Telecom Delivering Fonix Fone(TM) to Residential and Business Customers across New VoIP Infrastructure
ATLANTA & MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)----Fonix Telecom, a subsidiary of Fonix Corp. (OTC BB: FNIX), an integrated telecommunications provider, and Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced the completion of Fonix's next generation IP network. Fonix Telecom began delivering new VoIP services, known as Fonix Fone(tm), to customers across the new infrastructure earlier this month.
Lucent's voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) solution, including the Lucent Compact Switch, provides Fonix Telecom, a Competitive Local Exchange Network (CLEC), a facilities-based network platform enabling them to simultaneously support traditional voice subscribers and new VoIP customers. This network platform also enables Fonix to migrate from its dependency upon the ILEC's (incumbent local exchange carrier) unbundled network elements-platform (UNE-P) and reseller business model.
With the Lucent Compact Switch, Fonix Telecom will be in a position to offer VoIP services with Fonix Fone, for residential and business customers. Fonix Fone customers will have enhanced calling features, remote office capabilities, web portal functionality and full E911 capabilities. These enhanced services combined with superior network operations and customer service will enable Fonix Telecom to move solidly in the VoIP market place.
Lucent Worldwide Services provided 24x7 Remote Technical Support (RTS) and Repair and Exchange Services (RES) on the VoIP equipment during the deployment.
With its new business model as a facilities-based CLEC, Fonix Telecom expects to decrease its costs and increase its revenues, while at the same time adding the capability to maintain end-to-end control of customer services and improve time-to-market for next-generation products like VoIP. Additionally, Fonix Telecom will simplify network operations and ensure substantial growth potential for future IP-based services. Lucent Worldwide Services will provide maintenance services.
"The successful deployment of the Lucent Compact Switch will not only help us increase our revenues and margins, but also will help greatly reduce our expenses. This in itself will further enable us to deliver cost-effective telecommunications services to existing and new customers," said Dale Smith, vice president and general manager of Fonix Telecom. "By working with Lucent we were able to grow and enhance our network without disrupting our ability to provide high-quality customer service."
"Fonix Telecom will be able to further expand its portfolio of products in the Southeast," said Gerry Cafaro, vice president of sales for Lucent. "We look forward to continuing our work with Fonix Telecom in implementing our best-in-class technology to evolve their business and product offerings."
The Lucent Compact Switch also can serve as a building block to an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network that can enable blended lifestyle services, providing carriers a clear path to an IMS architecture.

Nike
Natural selection has been at work for eons, creating designs that outperform anything humans have yet devised: abalone shells tougher than the hardest ceramic, spider silk stronger than steel, a sea creature called a brittle star that can focus light ten times more sharply than the finest man-made lens. Today researchers are studying such forms in hopes of hatching new products and technologies. The work is advancing at companies as varied as Lucent Technologies and Nike, which this year retained a biologist to advise its shoe and clothing designers, and at centers like the new Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University, which plans to build nearly $350 million of laboratory and conference facilities over the next few years.
It is all part of an emerging science known as biomimicry that studies nature's models and imitates and adapts them for human use. Some of biomimicry's first fruits can already be found in such disparate applications as fabrics and house paints that emulate the uncanny ability of lotus leaves to repel dirt and water, carpets styled after the randomness of stones and leaves on forest floors, and superefficient fans and rotors.
The gap between natural inspiration and profitable invention sometimes remains hard to bridge. Three years ago a Canadian company called Nexia Biotechnologies generated headlines when it spliced spider genes into goats and created what it called the world's first man-made spider silk from the animals' milk. It named the product BioSteel. But the company couldn't economically mass-produce the fibers, and it quietly scuttled the project this year. Another goat-inspired product, Nike's Goat-Tek, a late-1990s trail shoe with a sole modeled on a mountain goat's hoof, never bounded off store shelves and was discontinued. Some researchers remain skeptical. Asks Rustum Roy, professor emeritus of materials science at Pennsylvania State University: "Biomimicry may produce something useful in very tiny areas, but what else are we going to apply it to? Not to highways or steel mills."
The speculative nature of many biomimicry projects means that they require big investments that can come only from government agencies, universities, and major corporations. At Lucent's Bell Laboratories, researcher Joanna Aizenberg has spent three years studying the brittle star, a relative of sea urchins and starfish. The five arms of the brittle star bristle with thousands of microscopic crystalline lenses. Together they act like one big eye, enabling the hand-sized invertebrate to spot predators and find hiding places in the shallow Caribbean waters where it lives. The curved lenses, which look like tiny bumps when seen under an electron microscope, are virtually perfect optical instruments, better than anything current technology allows.
It' s not just the lenses that captivate Aizenberg and her colleagues. The tiny crystals are surrounded by pigment-bearing pores that adjust the amount of light the lenses let in. "We don't want to re-create the brittle-star eye but to replicate the structure of the lens and pores," she says. Among other applications, the replicated array could give rise to faster fiber-optic networks and be used to replace the expensive lithographic masks that etch microscopic circuits onto silicon chips. Aizenberg estimates that such applications could be "maybe five years away," while conceding that's only a rough guess.
Probing nature at the molecular level is a hallmark of recent biomimicry work. Past efforts were confined to the macro world: Velcro began as a gleam in the eye of a Swiss inventor who studied the tiny hooks on cockleburs that stuck to his dog's fur. "Today's discipline focuses on small-scale remaking of biological materials," says Ilhan Aksay, professor of chemical engineering at Princeton University and principal investigator for the three-year-old Biologically Inspired Materials Institute, a consortium of research institutions funded by NASA to conduct basic research into space-flight materials.

Solectron says Lucent to become major client
http://aolsvc.news.aol.com/business/article.adp?id=20050623171409990018
SAN FRANCISCO, June 23 (Reuters) - Contract manufacturer Solectron Corp. said on Thursday it had signed a non-binding deal with communications gear maker Lucent Technologies Inc. that would make Lucent a key customer.
"The anticipated size of this win will make one of our biggest customers worldwide," President and Chief Executive Mike Cannon told investors on a conference call following the publication of the company's fiscal third quarter results.
The Solectron executive declined to specify the potential value of the deal. Cannon said the two agreed to non-binding contracts for Solectron to build Lucent products.
During its latest fiscal quarter, Solectron's revenue fell to $2.60 billion from $3.03 billion a year earlier.
Nortel, another communications equipment supplier, represented 11.3 percent of Solectron revenue in the most recent quarter. Nortel has begun switching this business away from Solectron to a new supplier, rival Flextronics International Ltd.

Lucent Technologies Completes China's First Field Trial of HSDPA Technology on 3G W-CDMA Network in Shanghai; HSDPA Demonstrations at ELE/PT COMM China 2005 Trade Show in Shanghai Highlight Lucent's 3G Leadership
SHANGHAI, China--(BUSINESS WIRE)----At the ELE/PT COMM China 2005 trade show today, Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) announced it successfully completed the first field trial of High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) technology in China, conducting a series of data calls - including demonstrations of live TV and video-on-demand services - on a third-generation (3G) W-CDMA trial network deployed by China Netcom in Shanghai.
The HSDPA-enabled 3G trial network also is supporting live demonstrations at the Lucent booth (#A101) that include DVD-quality streaming video and fast downloads of very large files. The network is based on Lucent's end-to-end commercial W-CDMA (also known as UMTS) solution, which incorporates HSDPA.
"This successful test reaffirms Lucent's leadership in HSDPA technology and paves the way for the deployment of our HSDPA solutions in China," said Mary Chan, vice president for global mobility research and development, Lucent Technologies. "We look forward to continuously working with our service provider partners to make more exciting, new mobile broadband services available to Chinese consumers and enterprises."
For the end-to-end W-CDMA trial network, Lucent provided its Flexent(R) OneBTS(R) base stations -- which support HSDPA -- Flexent Radio Network Controller, as well as its W-CDMA packet core solution including Lucent's Flexent Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), and Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN).
Lucent's Bell Labs-developed HSDPA solution is currently capable of supporting peak data speeds of up to 7.6 Megabits per second (Mbps), however the maximum speeds supported by the current generation of mobile devices is 1.8 Mbps. Future upgrades of HSDPA will provide theoretical maximum peak data speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps.
The enhanced data transmission capabilities of HSDPA will enable W-CDMA operators to support high-bandwidth data services and introduce blended "lifestyle" voice, data and video services, and will also dramatically increase the number of data users their networks can support, maximizing the use of an operator's available spectrum. For example, HSDPA will enable operators to support up to six times more users than W-CDMA in the same spectrum - at substantially higher average data rates.
Lucent recognized the cost and efficiency benefits of HSDPA technology at an early stage. As a result, Lucent's W-CDMA systems require only a software upgrade to support HSDPA, allowing operators to compete effectively and differentiate themselves in increasingly competitive markets. In addition, Lucent was among the first to trial HSDPA technology in a commercial environment.
Lucent is accelerating the commercial deployment of HSDPA technology by offering a clear and seamless path to HSDPA via its W-CDMA platform, conducting extensive demonstrations and tests for performance assessment, and working with device manufacturers on compatibility testing.

Lucent Expands Asian Presence
Forbs.com
June 21, 2005
Standard & Poor's Equity Research maintained a "hold" rating on Lucent Technologies (nyse: LU - news - people ), saying it believes the company is beginning to expand its presence in Asia with "multiple contract awards" announced at a conference.
S&P Equity Research noted that only 38% of March quarter sales came from markets outside the U.S. The research firm said, "The majority of the eight awards are tied to wireless 3G network upgrades, DSL or IP-based, packet networking.
We believe Lucent is getting more orders in Asia for DSL access solutions than in the U.S. market, which is dominated by Alcatel. However, S&P Equity research said that based on concern about weaker capital spending from Lucent's U.S. customers, it recommended against adding to current positions.

welcome to the board. Post away, bring this board back to life. It seems LU is starting to come back, it was under 2.50 a few months ago, no?
Aussie,
Welcome to the board.
Have fun,

G'day, Mates.
Done some paper trading for about six months. Was successful recently on a Gog call. Got the tip from an instructor and followed up on it. As an actual option's trader, I am fairly new to the practice.
First experience was back when the casinos were being built in Atlantic City. Lost about $200. Hadn't traded until recently with Goog. And, that was only after deciding options was a lot less risky and learning what I could about them.
As a shareholder, was in on LU before and made a nice profit. Got in again when it was $1.35. Posted that price on a couple IHub boards --doubt if anyone from them thought it was a good deal, as none ever said they bought any.
Have an order for 60 contracts of - LU JAN 2007 5 Call.
Should have no problem getting it filled.
Want to thank Phil for inviting me to the board. Will try to add to it and enjoy the experience.
G'day, Mates.

Today may be a good day. Think this thing might be turning around?
Before the Opening Bell ...
Lucent Technologies (nyse: LU ) will report fiscal second-quarter results tomorrow before the opening bell. Analysts expect Lucent to report earnings of 4 cents per share on revenue of $2.307 billion. Prudential Equity Group downgraded Lucent to "neutral weight" from "overweight" on March 28 and said the company's sales growth may slow as a result of major consolidation within the telecom industry. "We continue to expect Lucent to deliver 2005 sales growth near the mid-single digit range, in-line with carrier capital expenditures growth, but believe the cyclical recovery for the group has been completed," said Prudential. - Peter Kang, Forbes -
