Solectron says Lucent to become major client

SAN FRANCISCO, June 23 (Reuters) - Contract manufacturer Solectron Corp. said on Thursday it had signed a non-binding deal with communications gear maker Lucent Technologies Inc. that would make Lucent a key customer.

"The anticipated size of this win will make one of our biggest customers worldwide," President and Chief Executive Mike Cannon told investors on a conference call following the publication of the company's fiscal third quarter results.

The Solectron executive declined to specify the potential value of the deal. Cannon said the two agreed to non-binding contracts for Solectron to build Lucent products.

During its latest fiscal quarter, Solectron's revenue fell to $2.60 billion from $3.03 billion a year earlier.

Nortel, another communications equipment supplier, represented 11.3 percent of Solectron revenue in the most recent quarter. Nortel has begun switching this business away from Solectron to a new supplier, rival Flextronics International Ltd.
