Good press, rewarding shareholders, dispersing excess cash, yada, yada. lol
I'd prefer the cash as well.. One more thing on dividens. Why would companies opt to offer a dividend? I see Apple and Google don't pay out dividends and those companies are doing pretty well. Is it an incentive play to attract investors?
Goes right into your trading account. Or, as I mentioned you can enroll in a DRIP and reinvest it with the same company. I used to do that for a bunch of my long term stocks that I never touch. But I got sick of owning so many fractional shares at different prices that I discontinued it and just decided to take the cash on everything.
Sounds like a good play once I have my portfolio up. Does that money get deposited directly into my investment account or do they send a check?
Yes, but many times the stocks drop right after the stock goes ex so you have to be careful. Dividends are probably better played for long term investors. You find a stock that doesn't deviate too much and pays a decent percentage you can get a steady income if you buy enough shares.
That's fine, I'll search around for that answer. I never really care about volatility either but always struck my curiousity what the number indicated. Would like to know anyone's interpretation though
volatility average - I am not a chartist and never use this - maybe someone else can chime in
If you day trade all your capital gains will be short term, therefore it is based on your tax bracket. Long term is 15% (held for one year or more). There is no way for me to tell you how much you will be taxed - it could go anywhere up to 35% depending on your income.
Is there much money to be made in dividend shopping. Theoretticaly if I had 1000 shares in VZ from yuor scenario I could make a quick $500 over night right?
yes, that is right - i just bought ainv for the divy next week - i may sell it after the exdate or a I may keep it a little while depending on what it does
I know I am bombarding this board with questions simultaneously but online explanations through web sites are so text book and thus a bit hard to understand. My question is about volatility average. I know a larger number indicates higher changes in stock prices but what is considered high and what is considered low?
again I appreciate the help. So no matter what.. I could buy a stock a day before the dividends are paid and receive the dividend. The amount of time I have in the stock only is going to determine my tax status or rate?
Can someone tell me a generalized number (Percentage) that I will be paying towards tax as income and not capital gains as I am a day trader.
If you buy it and only own it a little bit before the ex date there is a difference the way you would be taxed. Ordinary divys vs Quaified:http://www.myjourneytomillions.com/articles/difference-between-ordinary-dividend-qualified-dividend/
I appreciate the information. Is there a certain time I would have needed to buy into VZ to get the dividend? I know I can't sell before the ex date but is there a date I have to have owned the stock to get the dividend? Or could I possibly buy into the company a few days before the ex date and then recieve the dividend for only being a share holder for a few days?
If you are a shareholder of a company that issues a dividend then you are entitled to that cash dividend as long as you don't sell it before the ex-div date. Not all stocks give dividends. You can also chose to reinvest the dividend instead of taking the cash - it is called the DRIP - Dividend Re Invest Plan - This site is good to plug tickers into - it tells you when the divy will happen and how much you will get:
http://www.dividend.com/dividend-stocks/technology/telecom-services-domestic/vz-verizon/
I plugged in VZ - so if you own 100 VZ shares you will get $50 providing you don't sell it before 1/6 and they will pay it to you on 2/1.
This is a site calendar site:

Hello all I am trying to undertand dividends better. Can someone explain to me how I can know how much dividend I will be paid (dollar amount or percentage?) if I am eligible and what makes me eligible for a dividen?
I am retired, on a farm in Fingerlakes country of NY.
I use DSL via phone co landline for Internet feed. I
will never have cable here, just as well because like
in developing countries the future is wireless from tower
or satellite. The provider you choose does matter. It
matters for price, google Sprint merger and you will see.
Also coverage, tower placement, mountains, valleys matter.
I use Verizon for mobile phone because it works where
I live, not because of price. You also have to consider
contract lengths, if one applies. Please google Toshiba
Thrive Review, read Jul 12, 2011 review by Eric Franklin
as he compares it with other top choices (before Kindle
Fire released.) Toshiba does not have 3G so you can't
buy one with a AT&T or Verizon chip in it, but you can
tether it with a smartphone or other 3d party device (see
Amazon, use their search block, type in wireless tethering,
Go. One example is Aluratek 3G Portable Wireless USB
Router. On sale today for $73.99 I see. If you already have
a smartphone, trade on that? I also have called my Scottrade
Branch by cellphone and asked for assistance in a trade
and they were happy to do it, for regular $7 fee.
If you want, send me your phone no. tunisonfarms@fltg.net
and time to call if you still need help.

Do you use your tablets with a phone/internet provider such as AT&T? Or do you just use them with wifi and hope you're around a hot spot?
I called At&t to see their rates for ipad data plans etc. They don't seem to carry or support Toshiba Thrives.
It doesn't matter to me who the provider is just doesn't make sense to have the tablet for trading on the road if I have to pray for hot spots.
depends...some see factoring as a lending of last resort and its expensive. Re amort of debt discount - typically this is a non cash item and is added back on the cash flow statement like depreciation of a car or plant. If you are trying to do this kind of DD on a penny stock, you are SOL cause it's pretty much meaningless, IMHO. If you are trying to analyze the f\s of a real company, I SUGGest that you read up on analyzing financial statements...or enroll on the CPA program...GLTY...
Man oh man, that helped. But this all seems confusing to a novice investor. How important are these numbers of factoring and amortization of debt discount?
Gulley
Okay, I think I get it. I'm just trying to understand filings. So could you or anyone help explain what amortization of debt discount is and give me an example?
Thanks for you help, cintrix and Churak.
Gulley
We used factoring many years ago as an importer & distributor to retail chains. Not sure it is the same but back then, we received 80% of the value of the invoice upon proof of receipt of the merchandise by the retailer. The invoice was stamped that the invoice was basically sold to the factor & the retailer was to pay the factor directly. Upon receipt of payment of the invoice by the factor, we were credited with the balance. We were charged interest on the outstanding balance. Each customer was credit approved by the factor for a certain amount and we could ship up to this amount. In addition, we had a global credit limit that we could borrow against by virtue of these advances. It was essentially a line of credit and if we shipped over the limit, we got nothing. I think the company we used (I am in Canada & it was many years ago) was Walter Heller & I believe they were based in the US.
I will be perfectly honest with you. I am really not too familiar with it so I don't want to give wrong info - I will try and find an account on IHub who can answer your question.
So it was hard to understand, but essentially. It's a percentage of advanced funding that a company gets when credited. Funds are usually received 24 hours after invoice has been verified. Though only 70% to 90% of funds are given at that point in time. The rest is given when amount is paid in full. Or am I still way off? Who lends a business this kind of money, banks or is there certain groups just for this.
Thanks for your patience, Gulley

More info on tablet choices.
LMAO
Thanks! :))))
You do know, eBay is an auction, so prices can be all over
the place. But dealers frequently offer a "Buy Now" price
for those who just can't wait or want only new, but you
can filter by brand, model, cheapest price, shipping charge,
other choices. I'm a trader, I like auctions, just like stocks
you have to know what an item is supposedly worth, the
fantasy number known as "list price." Then you hopefully
beat somebody up, they just had house repossessed, and
are selling their children for food. Well, not that bad but
you get the idea.
After losing several items I started bidding on more than
one at a time, a dangerous game if you don't set your
alerts and pay attention. I have to sleep sometime so I
won two bids on Toshiba Thrive 32GB wifi, list about
$499. One was used with $50 case and $100? worth of
purchased Apps, protective screen installed, but like new
with box for $385 plus shipping. The other was new in
box from dealer for $420 free shipping. If you Google
Toshiba Thrive Review or toshibadirect.com they give
price of $399.99 for 16GB.
Blackberry uses Android so it is the same language as
the Toshiba. I grew up with Apple so didn't have to
unlearn windows, etc. Samsung also makes a great
tablet, and a 7" Tab. Is priced between Apple and Toshiba.
Get all the memory you can, you never have enough -
unless you plan to send everything to the cloud, or back
up, or carry a pocket full of flash drives. Trust me on this.
So my wife found a 16G Toshiba Thrive on Amazon for $382.00 how much did you pay for your 32G?
I noticed you said the touch wasnt all that great...for someone who is not proficient in apple and has used a blackberry since the beginning, how do you think I will fair?
I guess it's like asking how will I do if I learn Dutch and move to Germany?
I have only had the playbook a few days, got a 32G for 250 last friday, using Wifi at home its just as quick as my high end lap top and my 4G samsung galaxy phone, probably getting a 9900 blackberry in a few days so i can bridge it outside off home.
I personally havent used it outside yet,but a few people i know that daytrade say it works fine.
The app store is weak compared to apple and android but that should change as updates come online to allow android apps to work on playbook.
Ihub only came out with android app a few days ago so hopefully blackberry will come along.
I hear major update is coming in february that should broaden playbooks usefulness.
There are many, many tablets coming on the market very
soon if not daily. Market is very volatile, not only because
everybody wants a piece of the action, but made worse
when Amazon put out the Kindle Fire below cost, some
say, at $199. Amazon wants to use Gillette razor model,
give you the razor, sell you lots of blades. Fire is good
for reading, but not what you want for business and then
more casual use at home. Some of the cheap Chinese
tablets coming out will not be supported and there will
be a big falling out, ala HP, by next spring, IMO.
You can save a lot by using eBay. I do a lot of research
on this subject so shoot me a msg on iHub or email
tunisonfarms@fltg.net before you buy. Everybody has to
make individual decisions based on what they mainly
want to do with them, are willing to spend, battery life
required, lots of others.
Thanks for replying. I have the Bold 9700 with 3G service. Problem is ihub doesn't have an app for blackberry so it's basically normal internet browsing which is slow as molasses and sometimes kicks me off due to supposed pages being too large to load. And the E*Trade app for blackberry is not without it's share of bugs.
How's the playbook with regard to internet browsing speed and streaming tickers etc? If it's just a larger crackberry then I don't see the point.
Wow! Toshiba Thrive...never even heard of that one. I will definately check it out! Thanks!
I trade almost every day, portfolio 26 stocks. Apple touch
screen is easy, Android is not so much. Kinda like once
you learn German, you move to Holland. You can get by...
How often do you trade? I can't imagine making trades off those touch screens. I would probably take three times longer to place a trade because I am terrible with touch screens.
I am a total Apple person and have two iPad 2 that I use
all day (and all night, according to the wife) Both iPads
are 64g, the 2d one I bought on eBay saving $400 off list
because it has Verizon G4 capability. I believe Apple is
the best because the platform, iOS4, now upgraded to
iOS5, is the best. BUT, and it is a big but, Apple does
not support Adobe Flash. And all of the stock streaming
tickers are using flash. Many PDFs and video presentations
are in flash. So I had to buy another tablet that uses
Android just to use for trading. The best choice I found
is the Toshiba Thrive. It only goes up to 32GB memory
but you can plug in memory, amount limited only by your
wallet, which you can't do with Apple. Hope this helps.
If u have a blackberry, get the playbook, its cheap now and can be bridged with your crackberry, works well according to a few people i know. The playbook may not have a huge app store like android or apple but it is a powerful machine and can run a platform easily.
I just bought a playbook to play with, dont have a blackberry but will get a new one soon,i have seen them worked bridged and its nice.
I think u may need a relatively new blackberry phone though.
I haven't used any tablets because I stayed glued to my desk all day but I will get someone over here who recently bought one (that is providing he has used it and didn't gift it for x-mas lol).
HELP!!!
This may be a no-brainer but...
Does anybody recommend a tablet I can use while I'm away from my PC to monitor my trades and ihub postages? I don't always stay put in one place for work and my blackberry is crazy slow when it comes to internet - besides the fact I need a microscope to see the screen.
ipad will most likely be an answer here but I've not been an apple user aside from my ipod (but I could learn) have heard about the kindle fire (but that it's more for movies and stuff not internet speed) saw a visio 8" tablet at a store on black friday but knw nothing about it.
Thanks, your input is appreciated!

Factoring Fees Explained
The important point to understand about Factoring is this: The advanced funding you receive for your receivables and the discount fees you will pay are based soley on the financial strength and credit worthiness of your customers, not your business! Discount rates will also vary depending on the total dollar amount you intend to factor on a monthly basis (volume discounts apply). Having said that, it is also important to understand that specific rates or fees for factoring your businesses receivables cannot be promised or quoted without knowing anything about your customers, your business, or the invoice amounts you wish to factor.
You will find that some factoring web sites are advertising a seemingly low discount rate that is presumed to be the rate any business will get if they factor with them. Understand that this is a ploy and is only a baited hook to get you on the phone! Once they have you on the phone and review all of your receivables it is only then you will learn the real factoring fees they intend to charge you!
Here we provide you with some examples of how the fees and funding can work. If you are interested in receiving an exact quote for factoring your invoices, please fill out our very simple getting started information form. A factoring specialist will contact you for a free consultation to tailor a factoring solution and fee structure that best fits your business. The information is free and the quote is yours to accept or decline.
Sample Fee Structure and Funding
Advanced Funding
When you send in an invoice to be Factored you will usually receive between 70% and 90% funding of the invoice amount within 24 hours after the invoice has been verified (depending on the invoice amount and the business paying the invoice). This is your advanced funding. Advanced funding is wired to your business bank account.
Discount Rate = Factoring Fee
The Factoring fee can range between 2.5% and 3.5% per 30 days, or .1% per day the invoice is unpaid after factoring. Keep in mind that factoring fees are tailored to the individual needs of your business and customer base.
Length of Time for Payment Sample Discount Rate
Per day 0.1%
30 days 3%
45 days 4.5%
60 days 6%
75 days 7.5%
90 days 9%
Remainder of the Advance minus the Factoring Fee
When your customer pays the invoice you will receive the remainder of the advanced funding, minus the Factoring fee (discount rate).
EXAMPLE
Lets say you have a customer ABC Company that owes your business $100,000 for a shipment of your widgets just delivered. ABC Company is a large customer that has good credit but they never pay their suppliers (you) any sooner than 45 days. Instead of anxiously waiting 45 days to get your $100,000, this time you decide to use Factoring to improve your cash flow. The Factoring company verifies your invoice to ABC Company and you receive 80% of the $100,000 ($80,000) within 24 hours, wired to your bank account. If you have a discount rate similar to the sample shown above and ABC Company pays the $100,000 invoice in about 45 days, this equals a factoring fee of 4.5% of the original $100,000 ($4500). Since you have already received an advance of $80,000 from the factor, you will receive the remaining $20,000 minus the factoring fee of $4500 ($15500). Therefore, in the end you collected $95500 of the original $100,000 invoice. However, this time you did not have to wait the usual 45 days to get your money. This time you received $80,000 up front in one day, and collected the remaining $15500 in 45 days.
Factoring: Cash Now! - No Waiting
What are costs of NOT Factoring?
Given the example above consider the time value of money and the benefits of improved cash flow to your business. By having cash for your invoices within 24 hours are you able to pay your suppliers faster and receive better discounts? Are you able to fulfill your next order to XYZ Company and make payroll without tapping your line of credit at the bank? Can you offer longer terms to larger customers and attract more business? Can improved cash flow help your business grow or survive without incurring more debt at the bank? Can the financial benefits of improved cash flow to your business offest the fees of Factoring, and then some? In many cases factoring is a smart business decision.
When is Factoring NOT a good fit for a business?
LOW MARGINS - If your business is running on low margins (less than 10%), factroing may not be right for you.
PLENTY OF CASH ON HAND - If you have a cash rich business free of cash flow concerns, factoring does not make sense for your business.
What are Factoring Fees in a 10Q?
I looked around and couldn't find what it is. Someone please explain. I'm trying to understand fillings and just wondering what costs are associated with this. Obviously an expense, that's all I know. Give examples, they help!
Thanks, Gulley
There are a number of factors that you didn't mention. You mentioned American Century Investments. Did they throw it all in one high tech fund or did they allocate it to a few different funds? Also, your age has a lot to do with where you put your money. Is this retirement money you will need fairly soon or are you young and we are talking over 20 years?
If you have time before you plan on retiring I would say that leaving your money in a guaranteed interest account isn't a good idea. As you mentioned you were making nothing in that account.
That said, I am not a fan of putting everything in one basket. I don't know who advised you, but why couldn't they divide that 16k into multiple funds? You may feel a bit more comfortable if you do that. But, when you are in mutual funds long term you are better off not looking at them constantly. Right now the market had taken a few hits and everyone's funds are down. Six months from now they can be down more or they could be up considerably. That is something that none of us can predict but it is the nature of the stock market. I can tell you this. I have a certain amount of my nest egg money in mutuals. When the market crashed in 2008 they dropped considerably - lost almost half their value. A few years later they were back where they originally were. Not telling you what to do but that is something to think about. You need to really think about when you need that money.
Those are all very volatile securities right now. Perhaps you should tell them to move you into a lower risk area, maybe mutual funds. Any type of investing involves risk, talk to a financial professional. JMHO
Help! I'm losing everything in my IRA.
I don't know if this is the place to go to get advice, but I've had money in my Company's IRA for nearly 3 years and have earned 90 cents on 16,000. I do better than that with my money market!
So I wanted to move my retirement fund into something with the potential for more earnings. The guy told me about one where I could earn up to 25% or lose up to 15%, so I thought, well, I'll give that a shot for a while. I thought that 25% and 15% was over the course of a year, NOT a month! I lost 15% in less than 4 weeks!
With this trend, I'll lose the entire $16,000 in a few more months!
Is this normal? Should I let it ride? I asked him specifically if the current trend for this fund was earning or losing. He obviously knew it was losing and just told me, "Well, it depends, blah blah." No straight answer. I feel I flushed my money down the toilet and got rotten advice from him! His goal is to get people to risk their money most likely.
What advice can I get here? Should I move it back to the 0 risk, 0 interest fund, or should I let it ride? Maybe I should invest 1K in there, put the rest back, and when the 1K starts increasing, move the money back.
Please help. Oh, this is American Century Investments, and it's their highest risk fund with stuff like Google, AT&T, Amazon, Netflix and stuff like that. Plus a bunch of pharmaceuticals.
Thanks!
