Building a LiB factory, simplified
* Hire motivated personnel, expect to have to train them.
* Have a proven product, your own or licensed one to start
* Buy machines. Off the shelf preferred above bespoke.
* Gather support
* Source your raw materials
* Design layout, utilities
* Choose contractors
* Get clients
Expect pitfalls and roadblocks along the way.
If you hire someone who has been down this path a few times before, some of the pitfalls and roadblocks will be avoided, certainly not all!
But when you've been there before you know how to climb out of the pit and how to go around the roadblock.
That is where we will make the difference. Always been like this!

Why Pilbara Minerals is choosing lithium phosphate
Calix and Pilbara Minerals have entered into a joint venture to create an innovative decarbonised lithium refining process. The project will use Calix’s renewably powered calcination technology for the processing of spodumene into a concentrated lithium salt, creating a low carbon, low waste, low cost and high value export product.
Supported by $20m in Australian Government funding, the joint venture promises to be an important project, not only for Pilbara Minerals and Calix, but for the Australian lithium industry as a whole.
Looks like they are talking to Pilbara.
As the likes of Mineral Resources, Albemarle and IGO explore their local lithium hydroxide possibilities, Pilbara Minerals says lithium phosphate may be more viable.
Through the ambition of some of the world’s biggest mining companies, Australia is realising its downstream capability, with several onshore lithium hydroxide plants emerging.
You can understand why. Lithium hydroxide and carbonate derived from the Wodgina lithium operation* was sold at $US51,209 per tonne in the December quarter. This is almost 10 times what a 9000-tonne Wodgina cargo of spodumene concentrate was sold for ($US5131 per tonne) during the same quarter.
To put it simply, lithium hydroxide is an upgraded spodumene product with less inputs required before it can be incorporated into a lithium-ion battery.
Pilbara Minerals is exploring the viability of a ‘midstream’ product as part of a joint venture (JV) agreement with Calix, where lithium phosphate salts would be produced via an innovative refining process utilising Calix’s patented calcination technology.
A final investment decision is expected to be made on a demonstration plant in the June quarter of 2023.
OMG.
That is where it is going.
Makes sense, spin the lithium then into battery grade at port so it is cheaper in end delivery annnnd high quality.
Teesworks electric car battery refinery approved
Published 27 November 2022
Plans have been approved for Europe's largest lithium hydroxide refinery on Teesside which would produce material for electric vehicle batteries.
Tees Valley Lithium will build on Wilton International Chemical Park, near Redcar, and part of the Teesworks freeport.
The £248m project could create 1,000 jobs, including its construction phase, with production to begin in 2025.
Planning permission was granted by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.
Around 89% of the world's lithium processing currently takes place in East Asia.
The business said the site would be capable of producing lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate, which are critical for manufacturing batteries, and would be sourced from imported raw materials from South America and lithium producers in Australia and elsewhere.
Sam Quinn, director of owner Alkemy, said construction was due to commence in 2023.

Game-changing iron air battery farm coming soon to Minnesota
It's been cloudy for more than half of January in the Twin Cities, so how is that going to work if we double down on solar energy? Xcel Energy thinks it has the answer. It's teaming up with a Massachusetts company to build a new 10 megawatt battery system to help us on a dreary day.
"Most batteries today are four or eight hours, so having a battery that could take out 100 hours is really a critical part of figuring out how we're going to be able to take renewable energy at times when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing and capture that in the battery," said Chris Clark with Xcel Energy Minnesota.
Xcel's first battery farm will take up four to five acres. But if it wants batteries to power its one million customers, they'll eventually need four square miles. That's not in the cards, yet.

Britishvolt plans re-energised on last-ditch offer
Collapsed Britishvolt could be saved yet, after Australian start up Recharge Industries made a bid on Tuesday
Britishvolt’s gigafactory plans have received a new lease of life from US-Australian startup Recharge Industries, which has made a bid for the collapsed battery firm.
Recharge’s non-binding offer re-energises hopes for the UK-based electric vehicle (EV) battery factory that Britishvolt had been due to build in Northumberland prior to its collapse into administration earlier this month.
Part of New York-headquartered Scale Facilitation, Recharge wants to entirely acquire Britishvolt, rather than just the factory site, according to Australian Financial Review.

Lithium refineries in Europe
Currently, februari 2023, there are no LiOH refineries in Europe
*The planned refineries will have an annual production from 10Kton to 100Kton
*A number of them are planned to start production as early as this year.
*I suspect most data is written for potential investors, so one should take dates and capacities with a pinch of salt.
*Without a professional industrial projects EPCM, I doubt if any will come online before 2025. Maybe 1 or 2,...partially

WASHINGTON, Jan 20 (Reuters) - General Motors Co (GM.N) and LG Energy Solution (373220.KS) do not plan to move forward with a fourth U.S. battery cell manufacturing plant, two sources told Reuters on Friday.
The companies' joint venture Ultium Cells LLC said in August it was considering a site in New Carlisle, Indiana, for a fourth U.S. battery plant, expected to cost around $2.5 billion.
"We’ve been very clear that our plan includes investing in a fourth U.S. cell plant, but we’re not going to comment on speculation," GM said in a statement on Friday

Did General Motors just drop its ULTIUM battery?
General Motors is reportedly planning to switch from pouch cells to cylindrical cells in its future electric vehicles – and the sudden change in direction has apparently caused a bit of a rift in the relationship with its primary #battery supplier, LG Energy Solutions: According to theelec, talks between GM and LGES about a planned factory in Indiana have ended, and GM is said to be reaching out to other battery manufacturers.
The cylindrical cells GM intends to use are the 4680 format, which were first introduced by #Tesla.
These cells may be easier to produce than pouch cells (you just got to love a good roll-to-roll process!), and (like all other form factors) are praised to be the best one around.
But I believe that their main appeal to GM is their standardisation.
The shift from pouch cells to cylindrical cells is not a new trend, as BMW has already announced its transition from prismatic cells to cylindrical battery cells for its EVs. With more and more automakers moving towards cylindrical cells, it will be interesting to see how this affects the battery market and the race to produce the best and most cost-effective batteries for EVs. So, buckle up and get ready for a thrilling battery cell ride, as the automotive industry prepares for a power-packed and electrifying future!

Lithium is typically extracted from hard rock or brines, but Mexico's lithium is found mostly in clay deposits, from which the metal has never been extracted commercially, and industry experts doubt Mexico can do so without private expertise.
Tesla, Mexico in talks on new Gigafactory but no deal yet: state official
Nuevo Leon builds special lane for the EV maker for quick shipments to U.S.
Tesla's potential investment in Nuevo Leon "is similar to all the other companies considering investment in the state," said Loo. "We want to provide as much information as possible to all the companies to make their best decisions."
"If companies are considering investment in Mexico, I think Nuevo Leon is the best place," he added.
Nuevo Leon is also looking to attract Tesla suppliers as well, Loo said, given the state's proximity to the U.S. border. Government filings show that Tesla is planning to spend $770 million on expanding the Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, which went into operation last year.

Britishvolt's demise leads to hundreds of job losses | GB News' Liam Halligan reports
2 years sounds like a lot of time, but that could come down to the US DOT and their requirements/qualifications, and then on top of that, there maybe other qualification stamping/s required. Who knows, and that’s not a world I care to Rabbit hole down. It can get complicated and confusing. My work is already confusing enough.
UL and IEC has test procedures outlined for product requirements. The testing is very straight forward, and it could take 6months to a year to test 1 line of cells in that chemistry. AA’s Li(off brand) took 10mos for us to qualify. Where as AA’s Li Energizer took 6mos.
So as for Renault it’s hard to say what is going on there. If it were my guess an MOU is keeping the options open for better capabilities and technologies.
Help me, I need you battery back ground.
Too many different battery deals. Was Renalt, pumping up their stock with all these annoucements or are they testing those batteries?
I have read it takes at least 2-years to okay batteries for cars.

Here’s a nice summary from a Reddit post…So let's see. At CES an SLDP 100ah is shown in a
booth. Sandy Munro, at CES, states that QS does not
have a solid state battery and SLDP does have it.
BMW all of a sudden decides to build a test line for
100ah batteries and gives an additional 20m to SLDP
for licensing rights and technical assistance to build
the line and batteries. Ford is building plants in the
U.S. to manufacture the batteries in conjunction with
SK. BMW wouldn't build a test line to do this based
on a 20ah battery that they had in their possession
since last year. It most probably tested the same
100ah battery that was at CES.
