Good Guy with a Gun: Stephen Willeford Named as Man Who Stopped Texas Shooter
The “good guy with a gun” who reportedly shot and wounded the alleged gunman at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, on Sunday has been named in media reports as Stephen Willeford, 55, a local plumber.
The Daily Mail reports that a local resident claims Willeford managed to shoot the alleged gunman, Devin Patrick Kelley, 26, between the plates of the body armor that he was wearing. Willeford is described as a plumber and motorcycle enthusiast with no military experience but with excellent aim.
According to an eyewitness interviewed by KENS 5, Willeford stopped the gunman by firing at him with his own rifle from outside the church, then by pursuing him afterwards:
Our neighbor, he’s a very good guy, a very big Christian, he’s the nicest man on the planet, he’ll do anything for anyone around here. We’ve known him for years. He’s childhood friends with my dad. He … came with his [gun], and he took cover behind a car, and he shot the guy, I’m not sure if it was inside the church or the guy was coming out, but if it wasn’t for him, the guy wouldn’t have stopped. And then that’s when the guy got in his vehicle and drove off. And our friend shot through the window at him, trying to get him again, and then he apparently crashed down the road.
He added: “If it wasn’t for our friend … there might have been more lives lost.”
Local law enforcement officials reported that the gunman dropped his weapon after being shot at by the “local citizen,” i.e. Willeford, whose name has not been officially confirmed.
According to numerous media reports, Willeford flagged down local Johnnie Langendorff, and the two pursued Kelley in Langendorff’s truck until Kelley drove off the road. He was found dead in his vehicle, though it is not yet clear whether he took his own life or had been wounded earlier by Willeford.
Both Willeford and Langendorff are being hailed as heroes for confronting the gunman.
Critics on social media argue that the “good guy with a gun” did not prevent the gunman from killing 26 and wounding dozens more.

More Armed Citizens, Not More Gun Control
Texas AG: Response to Church Shooting Should Be More Armed Law-Abiding Citizens, Not More Gun Control
By AWR Hawkins
6 Nov 2017
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) indicated during an interview with Fox News’s Brian Kilmeade that the response to the Texas church shooting should be more armed law-abiding citizens rather than more gun control.
Paxton pointed out that there were numerous laws already on the books, including “laws against murder,” and the attacker violated those laws without hesitation. He observed, “So adding some other gun law, I don’t think would in any way change this guy’s behavior.”
He added: "It’s not clear to me that [the attacker] wasn’t already prevented from having a gun, given his history in the military. What ultimately may have saved some lives is … people that were outside the church that actually had guns that may have slowed this guy down and actually pursued him. So I would rather arm law-abiding citizens and make sure that they can prevent this from happening as opposed to trying to pass laws that would prevent law-abiding citizens from having guns."

President Trump has spoken to Texas Governor Greg Abbott. CBS News, ABC News and The Daily Beast are now reporting the shooter in the Sutherland Springs, Texas, church shooting has been identified as Devin Patrick Kelley, 26. Kelley is dead following a short pursuit with police. A motive for the crime is not known. According to ABC Kelley recently showed off an AR-15-style rifle on social media:
(Via Daily Beast) – Devin Patrick Kelley has been identified as the gunman who killed at least 24 people at a church in Texas, a U.S. official tells The Daily Beast. Kelley, 26, was a resident of New Braunfels, a suburb of San Antonio, according to public records. On a now-deleted Facebook account, Kelley displayed an assault rifle.
Kelley was married and Kelley’s mother-in-law listed a P.O. box in Sutherland Springs as a mailing address. San Antonio police reportedly raided Kelley’s home on Sunday evening. ATTENTION: As usual when people who know nothing about guns write about them they often get it wrong. We are told he had a Ruger AR 15, also know as a Bushmaster. A Bushmaster is brand name of an AR15, it manufactured by Bushmaster whom are not Ruger. Ruger's has their own line AR15's called The 556.

I looked it up.
– Honorable Discharge – exceeded the standards
– General Discharge – If their service was satisfactory, but failed to meet certain requirements, they receive a General discharge under Honorable Conditions
– Other Than Honorable conditions discharge – Adulterers, people found guilty of civilian crimes, people who conduct violence, etc. receive this. Are not allowed to re-enlist and lose most VA benefits.
– Bad Conduct Discharge – usually given to people who have done something so bad they’re about to be sentenced to Military Prison and have just been court martialed. They are stripped of all veterans benefits.
This guy dodged all four of these ways to be discharged, and received the worst possible,
– Dishonorable Discharge – Given to people who’s actions are found to be, quote , “Reprehensible”.
Murder, Sexual Assault are common reasons. Beau Berghdahl just got Dishonorably Discharged because of his stunt.
One of the conditions of Dishonorable Discharge is you’re not allowed to own firearms, so in addition to “don’t murder” this guy was already breaking firearm laws, already on the books, just by owning his guns. No new law would have prevented this.
My guess? He sexually assaulted somebody and got kicked out of the military for it."

IIRC, dishonorable discharges are prohibited by the Gun Control Act of 1968 from possessing firearms. WTH was he doing with that gun? Almost like criminals don’t care about laws, or something. (Or is CBS reporting fake news????)"

The dishonorable discharge is based on a general court-martial conviction. This means the conviction is a felony, regardless of what the underlying offense may have been. The convicted felon is banned from possessing a firearm including Title II Firearms (a Silencer, SBR, SBS, AOW, or Machine Gun)."

- Between 15-20 people were wounded.
- The shooter was killed in Guadalupe County.
- Police are reportedly searching for explosives at a home belonging to the suspected shooter.

At least 28 people are dead after a man walked into First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs in Wilson County Sunday morning and opened fire, a federal law enforcement official said.
Between 15-20 people were wounded, various Wilson County commissioners told mySA.com.
The wounded were taken to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and to area hospitals, a local official said.
A young man standing outside the hospital, his head bandaged and his right arm taped from where an IV had been put in, said he had been wounded in the shooting and that this father had been killed.
His mother was in another hospital. He declined to talk but expressed faith that they would pull through with God's help.

Amanda Mosel's 13-year-old goddaughter was gunned down in the shooting. With tears in her eyes, the 34-year-old stood outside the Sutherland Springs Community Building where citizens gathered following the shooting.
"From what I've heard, someone just walked in and started shooting," she said.
Mosel said she "sadly" didn't attend church this morning, but the church is one she's attended.
"There's maybe 50 of us," she said. "It's a small, tight-knit church."
Devy Collins, 53, said one of the church pastor's children was killed. The pastor and his wife were out of town when the shooting occurred.
At least 10 victims were transported to Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville, said spokeswoman Megan Posey. She could not speak to their age or gender, but said there are multiple victims with gunshot wounds, and some have had to be taken by helicopter to a different treatment center.
According to a Twitter post, University Hospital's trauma team is caring for nine of the patients from the Sutherland Springs shooting, 4 children, 5 adults. The hospital reported one more victim is on the way.
A Sutherland Springs resident who lives near the church said the gunshots sounded like "somebody was banging a piece of wood" and she wasn't sure what the loud noises were at first. She heard a rapid succession of "pop-pop-pop" sounds, then a pause, then another burst of pops. The pattern kept repeating itself. She looked at the church but saw no activity.
Minutes later, police cars swarmed through the neighborhood.
"I'm shocked by it," said the neighbor, who declined to provide her name. She's lived in Sutherland Springs for nearly 20 years and enjoyed the community's quiet, friendly atmosphere. "It's really unbelievable," she said.
The Texas Rangers within the Texas Department of Public Safety is the lead investgating agency, assisted by law enforcement officers from Wilson County, Bexar County, the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, among others.
"We're looking at a pretty horrific scene that'll take several days to process," one official said.
Lawmakers spoke out on the shooting on social media.
U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio, said: "Terrible news coming out of Sutherland Springs, TX. I'm monitoring developments and am praying for the shooting victims."
President Donald Trump also took to Twitter to express condolences for victims.
"May God be w/ the people of Sutherland Springs, Texas. The FBI & law enforcement are on the scene. I am monitoring the situation from Japan," he said.
The church is southeast of San Antonio between La Vernia, Floresville and Stockdale off Texas 87 at 216 4th Street.
Sutherland Springs is about 21 miles east of Downtown San Antonio and according to the latest data has a population of about 643.

Been reading up on this, I damn near ordered one last month.
Thanks, I got a friend who thinking about a 6.5 and he's looking into the different rounds in this caliber.
I've been watching this gun and its improvements for a while.
Yep, and that's where a lot of our most common calibers were developed, a lot of the calibers not developed for the military were developed from the military rounds. As an example the The.45-70 rifle cartridge, also known as. 45-70 Government, was developed for use in the Springfield Model 1873.
Two things the left often gets wrong is military and NASA budgets, a heck of a lot of our technical advancement come out of these two things.

When we designed the 6.5 PRC we wanted to build an all-around system. We wanted to have high velocity, but good barrel life. We wanted to have consistent velocity and pressure performance within the case and chamber design and we wanted to be able to load bullets that were very low drag and effective at a long range.

After The Vegas Shooting, Gun Opinions The Same
Poll Finds Las Vegas Shooting Doesn't Alter Opinions on Guns
A new poll shows a majority of Americans want tighter gun laws, but the nation is divided on whether that would reduce mass shootings.
Oct. 21, 2017,
By LISA MARIE PANE
and EMILY SWANSON
Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) — The slaying of five dozen people in Las Vegas did little to change Americans' opinions about gun laws, a poll finds.
The nation is closely divided on whether restricting firearms would reduce such mass shootings or homicides, though a majority favors tighter laws as they have for several years, according to the poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
The massive divide on stricter limits remains firmly in place.
The survey was conducted from Oct. 12-16, about two weeks after 64-year-old Stephen Paddock fired on a crowded musical festival taking place on across the street from his hotel room, killing 58 and wounding more than 540 before killing himself.
In this latest survey, 61 percent said the country's gun laws should be tougher, while 27 percent would rather see them remain the same and 11 percent want them to be less strict. That's similar to the results of an AP-GfK poll in July 2016.
Nearly 9 in 10 Democrats, but just a third of Republicans, want to see gun laws made stricter.
Kenny Garcia, a 31-year-old resident of Stockton, California, and a former gun owner, said he's torn about whether tighter gun laws would lead to a reduction in mass shootings.
"That's the hard part," Garcia said. "How do you control something like that when you have no idea where it's coming from, whether you control the guns or not?"
Still, he's frustrated by easy availability of some devices — such as the "bump stocks" used by the Las Vegas shooter to make his semi-automatic guns mimic the more rapid fire of automatic weapons.
"They give people access to these things, then they question after something horrible happens, but yet the answer is right there," he said. "It just doesn't make sense."
About half of Americans said they think making it more difficult to buy a gun would reduce the number of mass shootings in the country, and slightly under half said it would reduce the number of homicides.
About half felt it would reduce the number of accidental shootings, 4 in 10 that it would reduce the number of suicides and only about a third felt it would reduce gang violence.
Alea Leonard, a 21-year-old data analyst and full-time student, said she's torn about whether the nation's gun laws should be more strict, in part because different parts of the country have different experiences with crime.
"Here, I feel like everyone should be able to carry a .22 (caliber handgun) on them," said Leonard, who lives in Orange County, California. Her neighborhood, she said, has a high crime rate and in the five months since she moved there, a 14-year-old was shot in the back of the head.
She grew up in California, but spent some summers in Wyoming. She never before felt the need to have a gun but is now researching what it would take to carry a firearm.
There are indications of a generational divide on the issue. Most of those in the survey who are younger than 30 said they believe stricter gun laws would result in fewer mass shootings, homicides and accidental shootings.
The poll also found that a majority of Americans disapprove of how President Donald Trump is handling gun control. Trump is the first president since Ronald Reagan to address the annual meeting of the National Rifle Association. One of his sons has voiced strong support for easing the restrictions on gun silencers.
Some 59 percent voiced disapproval with Trump's handling of the issue, while 40 percent said they approved. About half of Americans age 60 and over approve of how he is handling the issue, compared with fewer than 4 in 10 of those under 60. Politically, 79 percent of people who identify as Republican approve of Trump's handling of gun issues, while 61 percent of independents and 89 percent of Democrats disapprove. Sixty percent of gun owners approve of Trump on the issue.
The poll also showed Americans divided over which party, if any, they trust to handle gun control. Close to a third give Democrats the edge while 28 percent prefer Republicans, and 31 percent say they don't trust either party.
The AP-NORC poll of 1,054 adults was conducted Oct. 12-16 using a sample drawn from NORC's probability-based AmeriSpeak panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 4.0 percentage points.
Respondents were first selected randomly using address-based sampling methods, and later interviewed online or by phone.

Gun Laws Only Affect Legal Gun Owners & Do Not Deter Insanity!
Debunking The Left - Gun Control
Debunking the Left’s Favorite Claims about Gun Control
We’ll be talking about gun control for a while. There is no question that guns hold devastating power. It’s their purpose, and that purpose will sometimes be fulfilled in the form of tragedy. Still, we can’t let the heightened emotions of these tragedies pull us away from rational thought. The left wants harsh gun control, and they love to spout untrue claims in their effort to get it. Let’s debunk their favorites.
Guns Are Unregulated
A lot of liberals seem to honestly believe that you can buy military-grade weapons whenever you want with no consequence. Let’s break this down. For starters, the First Amendment was written with military-grade weaponry in mind. The founding fathers didn’t want to have a standing army because standing armies can easily overthrow governments. If there was no standing army, then they needed regular citizens to possess enough firepower to form a militia that could meet and repel foreign invasion. This didn’t just include military grade weapons; it favored them.
The second problem with this claim is that military-grade weapons have been regulated since 1934. Several updates have been added over the decades, but the premise is that anything made and sold to the military can’t be sold to civilians. This is why AR-15s are fundamentally different from M16s, even though they have similar design philosophies.
There are loopholes that allow civilians to own family heirlooms that might otherwise be banned, and a civilian can go through a stringent process to be approved to own or sell an otherwise banned firearm, but for most of us, military weapons are illegal and out of reach. Leaving individual states out of it, there are thousands of federal gun regulations already in place. We’ll talk more about their impact in a minute.
Buying Guns Is Too Easy
Next on the greatest hits list is what liberals have dubbed the “gun show loophole.” The premise is that gun shows have their own, unique set of laws that supersede all state and federal regulations. This is as bogus as it sounds. An arms dealer, whether at a gun show or not, has to follow the same set of rules that always govern them. At a store front or gun show, they won’t sell you anything they can’t, and you can expect that sale to come with a background check and the need for appropriate identification. The liberals made up the gun show loophole by deliberately misinterpreting a gun law that does exist.
A private gun sale does not require a background check or federal documentation. The reason for this is that guns are still private property. You have the same rights to sell a gun as you do to sell a car or a couch. This has nothing to do with gun shows or arms dealers, and changing that law is a can of worms that could invade further into privacy and regulation than educated liberals would admit.
Note: Many states have now changed this as well. For instance, here in Oregon all guns sales (transfers) have to be reported by am FFL. ~ Onebgg
Gun Control Saves Lives
Here’s the crux of it all. The liberals firmly believe that extending waiting periods, restricting the number of weapons you can own, limiting magazine sizes or banning suppressors can save lives. You could construe an argument to support any of these beliefs, but the numbers say something else.
In America, gun crime declined massively after a number of regulations were removed, most notably the assault weapon ban of the 90s. In other countries, there is a hodgepodge of results, none of which can conclusively tie gun regulation to an increase or decrease in crime. The only convincing evidence is that an outright gun confiscation and ban can often lead to a decrease in gun crime. This only works when fewer than 20 percent of citizens own firearms, and even then the only statistic that is significantly affected is suicide.
At the same time, decrease in gun ownership correlates with an increase in other crime in every case studied except Japan. To summarize, fewer guns means fewer suicides, more crime in general and an overall no change in life expectancy.
It’s obvious why the left really wants incremental gun control. Every appeasement brings them one step closer to completely disarming their political opponents. We already accept it as fact that we shouldn’t own machine guns or military weapons that the founding fathers believed were essential to defending a free nation.
If we keep conceding, eventually we will be weak enough that they can abandon their democratic principles and start the socialist revolution they truly want. Don’t be deceived; these two issues are closely intertwined. It is only your cache of weapons that keeps them contained to the political arena and off the streets. Even that effect is waning.

FBI: Over Four Times More People Stabbed to Death Than Killed with Rifles of Any Kind
http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2017/10/16/fbi-over-four-times-more-people-stabbed-to-death/
The FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR) for 2016 shows more than four times as many people were stabbed to death than were killed with rifles of any kind.
And because the category of rifles covers every type of rifle, this means there would be an even greater divide between the number of people stabbed to death versus those shot to death with an AR-15 or similar rifle.
According to FBI: UCR Table 12, there were approximately 374 people shot and killed with rifles of any kind. There were 1,604 people killed with “knives or cutting instruments.”
Table 12 also shows that more people were killed via the use of “hands, fists, feet, etc.,” than were killed by rifles of any kind. In fact, the tally shows that the death numbers were not even close. While approximately 374 people were shot and killed with rifles, roughly 656 people were beaten to death with “hands, fists, feet, etc.”
On September 26, 2016, Breitbart News reported similar gaps between rifle/shotgun homicides and stabbing homicides. UCR figures showed the number of people killed with rifles and shotguns combined in 2015 was approximately 548. Nearly three times that many — approximately 1,573 people — were stabbed or hacked to death.
This is not to diminish the deaths of those who did die via a rifle. But it does show that the Democrats’ relentless focus on banning “assault weapons” is a focus on something that is not used for homicide with anywhere near the frequency of knives and/or fists and feet.

A Woman Fought Off This Deranged, Knife-Wielding Kidnapper With Her Gun
http://thefederalist.com/2017/10/16/woman-fought-off-deranged-kidnapper-gun/
A woman used her legally-obtained, concealed gun to fight off a knife-wielding man with a history of mental illness who tried to kidnap her in a parking lot in Moline, Illinois last week.
The woman told police the suspect, Floyd Rick May, 61, was armed with a knife. May stabbed her in the arm as he forced his way into her car and ordered her to drive. The woman was able to grab her gun when she stopped the car—prompting the suspect to flee.
May has a history of mental illness. In 2010 he pled guilty but mentally ill to an armed robbery charge, and was sentenced to nine years behind bars, but was released in July.
Police arrested May two days after the mall parking lot attack. He has been charged with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery with a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, and aggravated assault, according to Fox News. He is being held on $550,000 of bonds, according to Half Moon Bay Review.

This whole thing just stinks to high heaven.
Thanks for the update pal.
Actually ONEBGG, to date I count 12 Republicans co-sponsors, 13 if you count the sponsor not 9, for that particular bill.

Of course that article was written on Oct 11, the Republican sponsorship does seem to be rising.
I have a couple of SIG pistols and none of them have ever gave me anything but great reliability and very accurate performances.
My all time favorite SIG is my SIG 229 Equinox which I have both a 357 SIG and 40 S&W barrels for.

9-Republicans Co-Sponsoring More Gun Control for Law-Abiding Americans
Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) introduced gun control aimed at law-abiding Americans on Tuesday. His bill has nine Republican co-sponsors, which means nine Republicans are willing to punish every law-abiding American for the behavior of one criminal in Las Vegas.
And they are doing all this to ban bump stocks, a product the ATF evaluated and approved in 2010.
The ATF approved the stocks because they are accessories for semiautomatics rather than conversion devices that turn semiautomatics into fully automatic weapons. Curbelo’s bill gets around the ATF’s approval by explicitly banning certain accessories for AR-15s, even if those accessories “[do] not convert the semiautomatic rifle into a machine gun.”
And like the Democrat bill–put forward by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA)–Curbelo’s bill is already broader than bump stocks alone. In other words, it is a ban that will keep on giving for the Democrats and other gun control proponents.
Here are the nine Republicans who are co-sponsoring Curbelo’s bill:
Rep. Peter King (R-NY)
Rep. Leonard Lance (R-NJ)
Rep. Patrick Meehan (R-PA)
Rep, Ed Royce (R-CA)
Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ)
Rep. Erik Paulsen (R-MN)
Rep. Ryan Costello (R-PA)
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL)
Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA)
The push to ban bump stocks is especially rich in light of the fact that using the devices probably made the Vegas attacker less effective than he would have been without them. After all, bump stocks are made for novelty rather than precision. For this reason, U.S. Army Sergeant First Class special forces soldier Tony Cowden suggests the Vegas attacker could have been deadlier if he had shot slower with a rifle not outfitted with a bump stock:

I've never shot a Sig Sauer, but the folks that I have talked to that have, swear by the manufacture as being "Top Shelf".
We'll see how the Military peeps like it.
10/4 Got it. Thank you ONEBGG.
In the House of Representatives, meanwhile, David N Cicilline, a Republican, and nearly 100 co-sponsors introduced a similar proposes legislation targeting bump stocks. The Automatic Gunfire Prevention Act would ban the manufacture, possession, transfer, sale, or importation of bump stocks.

OK here's the bill, it should pass. Feinstein's bill ain't going nowhere fast.

Thanks, I have seen a lot of both pro and con on this new gun deal. Knowing Sig Sauer's reputation and owning a few of their guns, I think this will end up mostly pro when put into use and fielded.
Edited: Is there a short answer without having to go through all of that?
I don't think the CDC has any business in the firearms area, it is not there job and we know that have skewed things in the past where guns are involved. Things like what constitutes a child, a juvenile, a teenager and a shooting have been statistics to bend for the left.
Centers for Disease Control; it is not a decease, but it is about control.
Obama's plan to reduce gun violence was crap, that's why it never got approved, a lot of it was tried before and some was an extreme over-reach.
Background checks are here and they are pretty thorough, you can't buy a gun from any dealer without passing one.
The Assault Weapons did not work.
The hi-cap magazine restriction did not work.
The bottom line is that for the most part Obama wanted to address the guns. He should have concentrated on the misused of guns by people. This is where most politicians fail; however you add it up - it is not the tool but the tool user.
Amore piercing if a most over-used term for ammo; the term armor piercing is a tactical term. So called Amour Piercing Ammo (AP) is designed to damage enemy weapons and their users at greater distances.
What additional tools for cops? More laws? Way too vague.
End freeze on gun violence research, did he mean the CDC? Again, way too vague.
Make our schools safer, What resources? More counselors to fog their minds?? Safer climates, more laws??? Better response time, how????
Mental health treatment, if you can't make them do it now, how was he going to insure that they do? Vague.
Ensure health insurance plans cover mental health benefits, more health plan bullchitt.
The White House also announced 23 executive actions on guns and gun violence that Obama would take immediately???
Most all of the links posted played to the same tune, Obama's plan, none that he did worked.
"As President Barack Obama’s first year in office drew to a close, he addressed the nation after a mass shooting in Fort Hood, Texas, saying the country must do everything it can to prevent future gun violence.
But in the weeks after he spoke, federal agents in West Virginia began taking turns firing a rifle with a stock-like contraption clamped to the back, the predecessor to a device that authorities say was used this week in Las Vegas, in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history."

Army to Field New Sidearm to 3 Units by Year’s End
Posted By: Matthew Cox October 4, 2017
U.S. Army weapons officials plan to issue the service’s new XM17 Modular Handgun System to three units by the end of the year.
The 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky is scheduled to begin receiving 2,000 9mm XM17s in November, according to an Army press release.
The 3rd Cavalry Regiment at Fort Hood, Texas, as well as one of the Army’s new security force assistance brigades are also scheduled to receive the MHS by the end of 2017, Brig. Gen. Brian Cummings, commander of Program Executive Officer Soldier at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, said in the press release.
The Army awarded Sig Sauer a contract worth up to $580 million Jan. 19. Sig Sauer beat out Glock Inc., FN America and Beretta USA, maker of the current M9 9mm service pistol, in the competition for the Modular Handgun System, or MHS, program.
The 10-year agreement calls for Sig to supply the Army with full-size XM17 and compact XM18 versions of its 9mm pistol. The pistols can be outfitted with suppressors and accommodate standard and extended-capacity magazines.

The service launched its long-awaited XM17 Modular Handgun System competition in late August 2015 to replace its Cold War-era M9 9mm pistol. The decision formally ended the Beretta’s 30-year hold on the Army’s sidearm market.
The current plan is for the Army to buy 195,000 MHS pistols.
Other services also have embraced the MHS. The Air Force is scheduled to buy 130,000, the Navy plans to buy 61,000 and the Marine Corps plans to buy 35,000 MHS models.
Cummings also said that the new pistol may see more action than its predecessor, the M9, which was primarily issued as a personal protection weapon. The M17 and M18, Cummings said, have also proven good for close-quarters combat, and so might be issued to some units and soldiers to fill that role as well.
“We’re looking at more than the traditional basis of issue, where we are doing a one-for-one replacement,” Cummings said.

Obama??? Really? Let's take a look at this.
The Big Chill
The chilling effect was so profound that the CDC did not resume its gun-related work even after President Barack Obama ordered it to in the aftermath of the 2012 mass shooting at an elementary school in Newton, Connecticut, Leshner said.
Leshner, then the chief executive of AAAS, chaired a committee convened at the CDC’s request after Obama’s directive to identify high-priority areas of research that would improve the understanding of what causes firearm violence and how to prevent it. None of the proposals in the resulting 62-page report have been implemented, he said. Congress also did not appropriate the $10 million that Obama requested for CDC research.
The long stalemate continued until shortly after the December 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., when Obama announced several gun-control proposals, including reversing the CDC research ban. His higher-profile proposals – tightening firearm background checks, reinstating the assault weapons ban – were viewed as impossible to pass into law. Congress wouldn’t bite. But ending the CDC research ban? Done by executive order, it appeared to have the best shot, along with broad support from a scientific community upset that gun violence as a public health problem was being ignored.
