Entergy (ETR +0.7%) says it will permanently shut its 728 MW Pilgrim nuclear reactor in Massachusetts in May 2019, following a final refueling in spring 2017.

ETR had announced earlier that it was considering shutting the unit as early as spring 2017, because the unit is losing ~$40M/year with little chance its economics will improve in the foreseeable future.

The company says the decision to close the plant at the back end of the two-year window was made to fulfill its contractual obligations to supply the region's power grid.

ETR permanently shut the 635 MW Vermont Yankee reactor in 2014, and said in February that it would permanently shut the 849 MW FitzPatrick plant in New York in January 2017.

NEW ORLEANS, March 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Taking a major step toward providing additional efficient, clean energy resources for new and existing customers and modernizing the company's power generation fleet, Entergy Corporation (NYSE: ETR) announced that its subsidiaries, Entergy Arkansas, Inc., Entergy Louisiana, LLC, and Entergy New Orleans, Inc., closed their purchase of the 1,980-megawatt (summer rating) Union Power Station located near El Dorado, Arkansas. The purchase was closed on Thursday.


The Union Power Station, which entered commercial service in 2003, is a highly-efficient, natural gas-fired generating facility. The plant consists of four combined-cycle, gas-fired generating units, or CCGTs, each rated at 495 MW.

In December 2014, the company announced an agreement with Union Power Partners, L.P., an independent power producer wholly-owned by Entegra TC LLC, to acquire the units to help meet increasing resource demands in the region and as part of the company's modernization of its generating fleet. The plant purchase price is approximately $948.0 million ($479/kW), or approximately $237.0 million per unit, subject to adjustments. The purchase price is about half the cost to build a comparable new CCGT facility.

Entergy Arkansas and Entergy New Orleans each acquired one unit and Entergy Louisiana acquired two units.

Entergy Corporation is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, including nearly 10,000 megawatts of nuclear power. Entergy delivers electricity to 2.8 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Entergy has annual revenues of approximately $11.5 billion and more than 13,000 employees.

ETR says it will close its Pilgrim nuclear power plant in Plymouth, Mass., by June 2019, citing poor market conditions, reduced revenues and increased operating costs.

ETR says current and forecast power prices have fallen ~$10/MW hour for an annual loss of more than $40M in revenue for the Pilgrim plant, the only nuclear power plant in Massachusetts.

ETR says it expected the plant to incur annual after-tax net losses on an operational basis of $10M-$30M for 2015, 2016 and 2017, before accounting for additional costs related to the decision to close the plant and any potential writedowns.

Entergy (ETR +0.1%) is upgraded to Overweight from from Equal Weight with a $71 price target, down from $73, at Barclays in response to the company's shift in strategic focus to the regulated business, improved regulatory constructs and a potential near-term dividend hike.

The firm says management is de-emphasizing the ongoing contribution of EWC and working toward presenting a clean and improving utility growth story to investors; although ETR has been internally moving in this direction for a while, the firm is increasingly more comfortable the message will begin resonating with the investment community.
