Come on DG -forget Family dollar - Move on to Dollarama OTC:DLMAF 84.79 biggest dollar store based in CANADA then move your headquarters there for the TAX evasion. Just my opinion here, but burger king did it and warren buffet gave it the thumbs up! All three of these dollar guys individually need to do something. I say let dltr have fdo and buy dollarama canada instead. dltr or anyone will fail with Levine. just another example of a spoiled brat trust fund baby running a company their forefather built into the ground. Hopefully the DG bid rejection will make dltr pay more. Shareholders of FDO know DG is a better fit and hopefully they will be able to file a lawsuit when crash and burn under poor management unquestioned continuously considering the guy never actually worked a day in his life -
History-by 1979 Leon (dad) Levine had 380 stores owned solely. Howard was 21 but didn't start a job there until 1981 where he was senior president of merchandising and advertising LOL at 23yrs old 400+ stores, but that wasn't good enough so he quit in '87 and was self employed as an investment manager until 1996
In 1998 he decided to rejoin the family business as CEO making 5.6m/yr

Dollar General Corporation (DG) today announced the election of Pat Fili-Krushel to its board of directors effective October 15, 2012.

“We are excited to welcome Pat to the Dollar General board of directors,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and chief executive officer. “Her expertise and experience in operations and strategic growth make her a great addition to our board. The election of Fili-Krushel to Dollar General’s board will bring the total number of directors to eight, and the total number of independent directors to four. Fili-Krushel will serve on the compensation, nominating and governance committee of Dollar General’s board. Dollar General plans to have a majority of independent directors on its board by April of 2013.

Fili-Krushel assumed the role of chairman of NBCUniversal News Group, a division of NBCUniversal Media, LLC, composed of NBC News, CNBC, MSNBC and the Weather Channel in July 2012. She served previously as executive vice president of NBCUniversal with a broad portfolio of functions reporting to her, including operations and technical services, business strategy, human resources and legal. Prior to NBCUniversal, Fili-Krushel was executive vice president of administration at Time Warner Inc. from July 2001 to December 2010. Before joining Time Warner, Fili-Krushel had been CEO of WebMD Health since April 2000. From July 1998 to April 2000, Fili-Krushel was president of the ABC Television Network, and from 1993 to 1998 she served as president of ABC Daytime. DG Dollar General Beats Analyst Estimates on EPS

Dollar General (NYSE: DG ) reported earnings on Sep. 5. Here are the numbers you need to know.

The 10-second takeaway

For the quarter ended Aug. 3 (Q2), Dollar General met expectations on revenues and beat expectations on earnings per share.

Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue expanded and GAAP earnings per share expanded significantly.

Gross margins shrank, operating margins were steady, net margins grew.

Revenue details
Dollar General notched revenue of $3.95 billion. The 20 analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ predicted a top line of $3.96 billion on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 10% higher than the prior-year quarter's $3.58 billion.

Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $3.96 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.59.

I remember the Dollar Tree one after the crash of 09' This one IPO'd smart and was there for the bull run. No severe damage or losses. The flags sold here are usually made in USA stated on package at least.

Dollar General Reports Robust 2Q - Analyst Blog

Dollar General Corporation (DG), an operator of a discount retailer in the southern, southwestern, midwestern, and eastern United States, reported healthy second quarter 2012 results. The company’s quarterly earnings of 69 cents per share came in ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 64 cents. Moreover, it handily outperformed the year-ago earnings of 52 cents, registering an upside of 33% year over year, mainly due to increased sales and higher gross margin.

Quarterly Details

Dollar General’s total revenue grew 10.4% in the quarter to $3,948.7 million from $3,575.2 million in the comparable prior-year quarter. Higher sales were primarily driven by an improvement of 5.1% in comparable store sales over the prior-year due to higher average transaction and customer traffic. However, total revenue missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3,959 million.

During the quarter, consumable goods increased at a superior rate compared with non-consumable goods mainly driven by company’s expansion initiatives. Moreover, the company’s home and seasonal categories along with some departments in apparel, accessories, sleepwear and intimates also experienced sales growth.

Dollar General’s quarterly gross profit climbed 10.0% year over year to $1,263.2 million, while gross margin contracted 10 basis points to 32.0%. The increase in gross profit was mainly attributable to higher initial inventory markups and decline in fuel cost with better transport efficiency.

Adjusted operating income for the quarter grew 10.9% to $388.1 million, while operating margin remained almost flat at 9.8% compared with the year-ago period, primarily benefiting from a contraction in selling, general and administrative expenses as a percentage of sales.

Balance Sheet

Dollar General ended the second quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $134.2 million compared with $113.1 million at the end of the prior-year quarter. The company had an outstanding long-term obligation (including the current portion) of $2,887.6 million as of August 3, 2012. During the first six months of fiscal 2012, the company spent $304 million on capital expenditure.

Share Repurchase

During the quarter, the company’s board of directors approved an additional share repurchases of $500 million without any time limit in relation to expiry of such authorization. This approval brings the total authorization of share repurchases to $1 billion, including the approval of $500 million sanctioned in December, 2011. To date, the company has already bought back 11.7 million shares worth $485 million.

Stores Update

During the six-month period, the company further expanded its stores network by opening about 295 stores, shutting down 29 stores as well as renovating and relocating 416 stores. This brings the company’s total store count to 10,203, increasing the total square footage area by 7.3%

Raised Outlook

Based on the better-than-expected second-quarter 2012 results, along with impressive start of the third-quarter, Dollar General raised its outlook for fiscal 2012. The company now anticipates same-store sales to increase in the range of 4% - 5%, higher than its prior guidance of low end 3%. Moreover, the company now projects adjusted earnings in the range of $2.77 - $2.85 per share for fiscal 2012 compared with its prior guidance range of $2.68 - $2.78 per share. Further, the company forecasts operating profit to lie in the range of $1.64 - $1.66 billion, better than its previous guidance of $1.62 - $1.66 billion.

That's your opinion and I agree one of the four stores in the 11 mile stretch I drive each day has crappy management too but that's not fair to judge them all for a few bad ones.
