Hydrogen fuel cell technology ‘not too far away’ – Sibanye-Stillwater
Sibanye-Stillwater CEO Neal Froneman
4th February 2020
By: Martin Creamer
Creamer Media Editor
CAPE TOWN (miningweekly.com) – Even though society had begun to move towards battery electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell technology would be the real disrupter of the electric vehicle market, Sibanye-Stillwater CEO Neal Froneman predicted on Tuesday.
Sibanye-Stillwater is the world’s largest primary producer of platinum, which is a key ingredient of fuel cells.
In a main stage address to the 2020 Investing in African Mining Indaba, Froneman described fuel cell technology as being “not too far away”.
“Car producers are already producing cars with fuel cells and fuel cells are going to be an important part of the Olympic Games in Japan. We just saw that U2 had a concert that was powered by fuel cells. Fuel cells are going to be the real disruptive technology and I’m talking about the hydrogen economy,” he said.
Sibanye-Stillwater is also the second largest primary producer of palladium and the third largest producer of gold (on a gold-equivalent basis), as well as a significant producer of rhodium. It is also the leading global recycler and processor of spent platinum group metals (PGMs) catalytic converter materials.
A week ago, the company achieved seven-million fatality-free shifts, which is unparalleled in the South African deep-level gold-mining industry and indicates going 500 days without a fatality.
“It is far safer underground in a deep-level gold mine in our company than it is driving on the road and we’ll continue to push the boundaries,” he said.
Froneman described PGMs as an integral part of positively influencing climate change.
“If you look at their primary uses in the automotive industry, they clean up the air by curtailing emissions. In terms of renewable energy, they play a key role. We are as a company very focused on the environment,” he said.
The Stillwater operations in the US are on the border of the Yellowstone National Park.
“You cannot imagine a more sensitive area to conduct mining operations. Mining operations are conducted there very successfully with the full support of the landowners in that area and, of course, all the regulators,” he said.
In terms of a good neighbours’ agreement, landowners are entitled to attend mine meetings.
“There is complete transparency,” he said.
Although the agreement might not be applicable to South Africa environmentally, part of the problems experienced with local communities stemmed from a lack of full understanding and full engagement with companies.
As one of the world’s biggest PGM recyclers, Stillwater recycled about 700 000 oz, which was an important part of being environment-friendly.
“We intend to take some of these concepts, implement them in South Africa and contribute positively to the mitigation of climate change,” he said.
“Our investment in DRD was a smart investment. We are dealing with a lot of legacy issues in South Africa, especially on the environmental side and we have a significant number of tailings dams that are impacting on our subterranean water.
“DRD is a company that retreats these tailings dams and improves the environment, and that is a really good company to be associated with.
“We hope to expand DRD’s operations into the PGMs sector, into other minerals and internationally. In fact, our US operations have already asked if DRD would come and look at a potential opportunity in our Stillwater operations,” Froneman said in his speech covered by Mining Weekly.

New gold rush flattens Johannesburg's famous mining dumps
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – A new gold rush is hitting Johannesburg, literally flattening the South African city whose Zulu name “Egoli” means City of Gold.
Hundreds of massive dumps of “tailings,” the waste product left from more than a century of gold mining, dot the area in and around South Africa's largest city. Experts believe they have long posed a serious health and environmental risk to the estimated 1.5 million people who live near them. But the dumps are yielding a new round of precious metal thanks to new technology, and, this time, companies sifting through the giant dumps are carting away the waste and transforming the city’s skyline.
“The liberated land is currently being rehabilitated ... for future housing, recreation, commercial and light industrial redevelopment,” said James Duncan, spokesman for DRD Gold, which re-mined Johannesburg gold dumps for 33,600 ounces of gold, worth nearly $40 million, in the last quarter alone.
Six years ago, DRD ceased most of its traditional gold mining and began focusing on the dumps. While miners historically could only gather gold in chunks, new technology allows the recovery of up to 40 percent of the gold left in particle form in the dumps.
“If there’s gold in them thar hills, we’re going to find it.”
- James Duncan, DRD Gold
One gold mining dump towers over the FNB Stadium, where the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup Final was staged, and where the recent memorial service for Nelson Mandela was held.
DRD has already removed the massive Top Star mine waste dump, an enormous mound just south of the city center which once featured a drive-in theater atop it. Duncan said the new development that will take shape where the Top Star site was will serve as a “lung in the city,” where reclaimed real estate will boost the local economy and Johannesburg’s tax coffers.
The city and national Department of Mineral Resources are committed to seeing the process through, especially given the massive profits at stake, said Duncan. He said mining can't begin until a company's plan for mitigating the environmental issues is approved.
"No approved program, no license, no mining," Duncan said. "Operators like us are not released from rehab obligations until in possession of a closure certificate is issued by the department. The department monitors compliance with the program from start to finish."
There is no shortage of gold mining dumps in Johannesburg, and the man-made mounds historically have separated the city’s neighborhoods and classes.
While gold mining has historically run afoul of environmental groups, the effort to truck waste out of South Africa’s largest city and to remote landfills is being applauded by most conservationists. They have long complained of the hazards of dust and runoff from the dumps.
According to a 2012 Voice of America report, radioactivity near a dump in Mogale City, just outside Johannesburg, is 15 times higher than normal. The radiation comes from uranium traces in the mined rock, which ultimately works its way into the ground water.
"It is not safe for the children to play inside because the soil is not suitable for the people," area resident Jeffrey Ramoruti told the U.S. government outlet.
Ignorant of the dangers, children often play in the dirt around the dumps, where they sometimes become covered with orange dust, Ramoruti said. Some pregnant women reportedly eat the toxic soil, out of a tragic belief that it can relieve stomach pains.
Still, some protesters say that by removing the dumps left by generations of gold miners, companies are destroying the city’s heritage.
DRD aims to remove and treat more than 20 million tons of tailings from the hundreds of dumps around Johannesburg every year, the equivalent of 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of material every hour of every day.
“If there’s gold in them thar hills, we’re going to find it,” Duncan quipped.

DROOY chart looking almost healthy......
but the condition of gold makes you wonder. I saw where the GDX is in a bullish configuration suggesting a few more points there. I am not sure how that relates to DROOY.
No........
Sorry. I ran into it by chance by flipping channels one night.
In a nutshell, it is believed that wherever an asteroid strikes the planet gold is constructed in that area...... along with irridium and other metals. It is also believed that the largest asteroid ever to strike Earth was in South Africa - no visible crater, but an indentation reaching dozens of miles in diameter.
I flew over the crater in Arizona on the way to Vegas a couple years ago and again last night. Pretty wicked destruction.
Bought a few more yesterday. I am full now.
e
no, ya got'em link?
Did you see the recent piece on the History......
Channel about asteroids and creation of gold and one of the greatest asteroids ever having hit South Africa? Interesting.
I bought a few more DROOY today.
copper? wished they had some?
I placed it into GDXJ, a new fund for gold mining juniors. I am allocated
70% gold and silver, and only 30% miners, with half of it in majors, half
in juniors. Individual juniors are too risky to own, even though they
may really go to the moon during the gold mania. Some of them may go
BK before then, and DRD gold is a prime example of that, now dangerously
close to shutting down their last mine. The junior index
crashed all the way back to 2002 lows last Fall, which means some juniors
like DROOY broke these lows.
4.50 was another one of those grabbing ledges I told about....
that one held. I wonder myself of the rise. note the gap.
drooy did rally last couple days. i wonder why?
I sold too. taking my money and placing it here...you might want to check it out: http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=42403337
hi vi, think ya got it right. also they didn't hesitate doing r/s before either.
Drooy should be making money now, but the probability is
high they will lose Bvyoor, which is their last active mine,
apart from their surface dump operation. The market could
perceive it as they are out of reserves. Drooy came down
from being a 1.1 Moz Producer to 250KOz produce this decade
due to losses, mine losses, etc. They don't have many mines
left, this is the last one, apart from surface production.
Technically, they own more, but these were, too, closed due
to high costs.
No doubt the stock will tank if they have to close it or liquidate
it. It's not a given, but the probability is high, since it
is very unprofitable. In general, statistics for someone to
come out of Judicial management is not good in SA. For a while
I had to read what it actually means, and it is a similar process
to US Chapter 11. Not good at all. The company was making money
for a few quarters, but, apparently, it is going through a
difficult time, and if gold postpones the manic phase for a
year, they may go under. While I am confident gold is going to
go manic, and DROOY will be an excellent stock then, I am not
so sure it will do this right this moment. If it doesn't, this
CO is dangerously close to going under due to all mishaps.
i agree, the prospectus/company doing changes. i could not understand there proposals in coming meeting.
with 1100 plus gold drooy should be $20 or more.
I actually decided to sell it today and rotate the proceeds in
GDXJ.
The reason was the news about Judicial order in their
remaining underground mine. While DROOY could go far higher if
this is resolved, I am not comfortable with this situation. It's
their last remaining underground mine, and the
risk of bankruptcy is too high. Judicial order roughly means
Chapter 11, and I have seen another SA gold miner getting
liquidated this year not all that long after such news.
Which is why DROOY tanked.
Granted, in a gold Mania DROOY should perform great, but
given these problems I am not sure the Company will live,
the risk is too great.
They have surface operations, and I am not sure what caused
this, but this is not positive news. I sold because drooy is
touching the downtrend. It might fly higher still, this is
a technical bounce, at least, maybe some good news.
To 'Vi', good evening. any changes today?
The POS should go back to 8 now. Other miners are pretty
expensive, SA are dirt cheap. For a good reason - gold hit
75 year lows in 2005, in RAND terms, inflation adjusted.
This chart explains a lot, the 2001-2002 surge and the subsequent
dump. Inflation is 8.4% in South Africa. However,
gold bull should enter a mania phase now, which should take
care of this. DROOY's profits improved steadily since 2005.
However, it still can go belly up. The majors, such as HMY, GFI,
and AU are less risky.
ZAR is South African rand, their currency, plotted against the
dollar. Up means
down on this chart - the number of ZAR needed to buy 1 dollar.
Drooy dug itself out from a deep slump and has been profitable
for the past couple of years, even started to pay dividend,
although the rand strengthened dramatically since January.
Drooy should be making money at this gold price. 11% margin,
judging by the previous quarter, but it may be less due
to the electricity hikes. My main positions are gold, silver,
GDX, and GDXJ, and HUI tracking portfolio, but I am overweight
RSA miners. I don't expect outsized gains in HUI like gold
bulls saw back in 2001-2003, but South African miners could
easily see such gains, because their reserves are priced
at a tiny fraction of their Canadian counterparts. DROOY is
currently trading at $3.1 per Oz of their gold reserves and
resources. Canadian miners are much safer to gold fluctuations,
but many are trading at $200-$400 per Oz, so they don't offer
as much leverage to soaring price of gold.
FWIW, HUI went from 35 to 500.
A quote...........
from Bill Bonner - According to the law of supply and demand, you expect the price of a thing to fall when its supply increases faster than the demand for it. In today's news are two reports on gold production. One, from South Africa, tells that a scientist says the nation's residual gold in-the-ground is much less than expected. It has been overstated by 900%, he says. Another report shows the output of from the gold mining industry clearly topping out. Gold supply, in other words, is increasing, but not as fast as it used to.
I took a chance on it grabbing.....
on to technical geography and lost. It was not but 200 shares.
I own TGB - been buying since $1.50 - last bought 3.24.
I own 300 certificates on silver @ 10.71 and 300 more @ 10.73.
Miners and metals are not my thing. I trade ES and TV futures for a living. But ya gotta dabble in this stuff to hedge the madness.
Good luck.
To 'cottonmather', i'm bullish on gold. but drooy? not sure what is their real problem.
several years ago they were to split company into two.
they never did it so far.
i hope wrong but financing by gov't isn't my cup of tea.
Looks like I have......
began pinching too early. 200 shares won't kill me but it leaves a bad taste.
In the weekly chart $6 was a ledge it could try to grasp. Right here is another. Many Asian markets are jumping upward today and American indices are up as well. Gold, at the moment, is 1125.7
Dow futures 10306. S&P futures 1101.
i read some of their findings. no look good fer now!
I bought.....
200 then wanted to wait for the pace to come - price dropped. Gonna wait.
probably over done... :)
Are other South African miners.....
suffering similar punishment? I'm not terribly familiar with miners individual locations. But I would think more than DROOY are South African with this region being gold laden.
India just bought 200 tons of gold. Asian governments and European banks have been buying gold for a long while. It seems local currency and power costs have ripped quite a bit from this stock. Over done?
The chart has geography around 4, 5, and 6 bucks that may slow or correct price activity. Today was a good first indication - buying was superior to selling despite price.
Let's see if she digs her nails in here.
hey mick......
throw in rsi trend divergence too. the only bad thing is it is not on increased volume
hi cotton, i didn't see close today. do you have it?
I'll begin buying.....
DROOY tomorrow. A spd suggests a bottom is in or forming.
I bought TGB a few days ago.
DRDGold to apply for Blyvoor's judicial management
By: Martin Creamer

JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE- and Nasdaq-listed gold miner DRDGold would on Tuesday bring a semi-urgent application to the South Gauteng High Court to have its loss-making Blyvooruitzicht gold mine placed under judicial management, the company said on Monday.
DRDGold CEO Niel Pretorius told Mining Weekly Online that the application was being made in order to prevent the underground Carletonville gold mine from plunging into liquidation, as occurred this year with the stricken Pamodzi Gold.
Pretorius said that the mine had been hit by the "perfect storm" of strikes, the strong rand, seismic damage and higher electricity tariffs, and faced the prospect of even higher power prices going forward.
He told Mining Weekly Online that the application was being brought on a semi-urgent basis in order to stave off the prospect of hostile creditor action, which would force the company into defensive mode at a time when it was pursuing Blyvoor's rescue.
"We want immunity against hostile creditor action sooner rather than later," Pretorius told Mining Weekly Online.
"We have managed to keep most of our payments on a pretty healthy basis without causing any distress or hardship to any of our suppliers, and now we can go into a situation in which a judicial manager can engage and try to reach a compromise," he said.
Pretorius believed that there was a good prospect of Blyvoor's financial position being restored, given that the mine made R190-million profit for the financial year ending June 30.
"It's now literally a matter of having to mine low grades, and to work on the rehabilitation of the high-grade areas, while having to pay too much for certain services," Pretorius added.
He felt that Blyvoor, which was currently losing R27-milliion a month, could be back into profit by March.
"It needs R50-million to R70-million in rescue capital," Pretorius told Mining Weekly Online.
DRDGold, which owns 74% of Blyvoor, is making the court application under Section 427 of South Africa's Companies Act.
Being the largest creditor, Pretorius told Mining Weekly Online that DRDGold was in a position to make a strong case for its nominated representative to be appointed judicial manager.
He said that the company had an independent third party in mind that was sufficiently commercially astute to be able "to do the things that we have tried to do over the past few months, but were not able to".
The company's attempt to restructure Blyvoor has not delivered the expected turnaround.
"The mine is finding it very hard to shake off the effects of the recent four-week strike; we now need a rescue plan that holds real promise of saving Blyvoor from insolvency," Pretorius said.
Judicial management was the "only appropriate course of action" in the face of the "combined negative impact of circumstances beyond the control of
the board of directors and management."
Blyvoor's period of "handsome profits" lasted only until April, after which it was struck by a 16% drop in the average rand gold price caused by the strong rand; extensive seismic damage to higher-grade underground production areas at the No 5 Shaft; power utility Eskom's higher winter tariffs, compounded by a 32% price increase effective from July 1; and the wage strike by the National Union of Mineworkers, which resulted in the loss of 8 000 ounces of production worth R60-million.
Pretorius, a former defence attorney, explained that, in terms of a judicial management order, the court appointed a judicial manager with wide powers to take action to save the business.
The steps that the judicial manager would take included giving certain creditors temporary preference over others and agreeing compromises with creditors without the risk of committing an act of insolvency and thereby exposing the mine to liquidation.
DRDGold envisaged Blyvoor remaining under judicial management until after access to the damaged higher-grade areas had been regained.
DRDGold would put the R75-million that it had allocated in the past three months towards rescuing Blyvoor at the disposal of the judicial manager and give the person appointed every assistance in obtaining additional "rescue finance" from institutions, like South Africa's State-owned Industrial Development Corporation.

Vi you did well with KGC --- they bought several i owned.
re
I bought KGC below 50c in 2000-2001, although my first try
was for $2 in 1999. DROOY appears to be cheaper
than KGC was back then. Many risks are present with
mining, but the stock is definitely dirt cheap.
it surely is dirt cheap. especailly if bibs are on target fer $22

Vi,,,gold is following 50ma nicely.
not bad gives a chance fer some gold bugs? basing nicely this week.
An argument could be mustered in the weekly chart that the stock is on the receiving end of a head and shoulders with a $4 target. There is geography for resistance near the current price level ($5 to $6). I'll watch but there seems little promise overall without serious change.
Good luck to us all
o.k.,,,one to watch fer a btm.
No. I am not invested with this, so I am not poking at it much. With stocks, I am a swing-trader - not an investor. Everything is a trade, including my IRA.
If there were more volume the last two days this one might prove entertaining. I'll try to watch for a little while.
thanx Vi...i was trying to figure out the language in the folder.
I usually throw these docs in the garbage. I hold quite a few
gold stocks, and your vote will typically have no bearing
on anything that happens.
Hopefully, earthquakes and strikes don't happen
to DROOY every quarter, although... gold bugs have their
reasons to hate this stock. Mostly, for falling in love
with it early this decade on belief that this stock is
20x leveraged to price of gold. It is, but costs soared too.
I believe this stock will still shine in a gold mania, which
is likely coming next.
FWIW, a few reasons SA miners lagged and are currently the
cheapest gold miners on the planet.
1) Strong rand (for a while, 2002-2006)
2) record oil, in gold terms, which affects costs
3) low to negative margins
4) RSA issues, such as electricity blackouts, strikes, etc.
A note: South Africa is STILL home to 50% of known World gold
reserves
hi Vi,,,i see the proxy but clear as mud.
have you seen there proxy vote yet? conference stuff.
this could be why the pps drop.
