Bruker Helps Haitian Relief Mission by Helping with Implant Metal Verification
Jan 24, 2010 - Azom News
http://www.azom.com/news.asp?NewsID=20428
Bruker Elemental contributes in-kind donation to assist local medical non-profit, Surgical Implant Generation Network (SIGN), in preparation of their Haitian relief mission. Bruker Elemental donated the use of a S1 TURBOSD handheld XRF analyzer to help identify and verify the metal alloys used in these medical implants. This form of positive material identification (PMI) is used to find counterfeit implants made of non-surgical steels.
SIGN, founded by Richland, WA orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lewis Zirkle, specializes in supplying orthopedic surgical kits to hospitals around the world. Their mission is 'to support surgeons in the developing nations by providing them with training and modern equipment so they can provide immediate surgical treatment to their patients. As a result, surgeons can treat more patients in a timely manner, and patients are soon able to walk and return to work to feed and care for their families.' Dr. Zirkle and the SIGN team are now on the ground in Haiti and working out of Kings Hospital in Port-au-Prince. Their blog is http://www.signhaiti.blogspot.com/
In addition to the use of a S1 TURBOSD for material identification, Bruker Elemental donated in-kind labor to help prepare the orthopedic materials for shipment to Haiti. Volunteers spent the afternoon sorting and packing kits of surgical instruments, screws, implants and other orthopedic trauma items.
Bruker Corp. says Q4 revenues will beat both 2008 and analysts' expectations
January 13, 2010 - by MassDevice staff
Fourth-quarter revenues at Bruker Corp. are likely to beat its year-ago numbers and the expectations of analysts, according to a preliminary count by the Billerica, Mass.-based manufacturer of laboratory equipment.
http://www.massdevice.com/news/bruker-corp-says-q4-revenues-will-beat-both-2008-and-analysts-expectations
Bruker Corp. (NSDQ:BRKR) likely generated more than $340 million in revenues during the fourth quarter, beating both year-ago levels and consensus analyst opinion for the period, according to company officials.
The preliminary revenue figures for the three months ended Dec. 31, 2009, were reported Jan. 13 as part of an investor presentation by Bruker executives at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco. During their prepared remarks, CEO Frank Laukien and chief accounting officer Brian Monahan said the firm finished 2009 with a "healthy" order backlog and is beginning to see a gradual recovery in industrial orders.
The estimated $340 million in fourth-quarter revenues would mark a $25 million, or 8 percent, jump from the year-ending quarter at Bruker in 2008. It also would beat the $329.4 million average of revenue forecasts by analysts tracking the Billerica, Mass-based manufacturer of research and laboratory equipment.
The year-end bounce, however, failed to lift total revenues for 2009 past 2008. For the 12 months ended Dec. 31, 2009, Bruker will likely record about $1.04 billion in revenues — or about $67 million below the $1.1 billion posted in 2008. The company will report its full financials in late February.
Laukien and Monahan also hoped to make news by announcing the imminent debut of its next-generation drug and explosive detection device. The detector builds on ion mobility spectrometry technology, which is able to detect trace amounts of materials by measuring the physical characteristics of gaseous ions and the speed they travel through a short tube to distinguish specific materials.
Neither story appeared to excite investors: Bruker stock was up 2 cents to $13.20 a share midway through Wednesday's market activity. The stock had slipped as low as $12.84 — a 3 percent decline — earlier in the day before recovering.
X-ray technology has potential to transform archaeology
11 Jan, 2010 - The Armidale Express
A researcher at the University of New England is pioneering the use of new X-ray technology in analysing the composition of ancient pottery.
http://www.armidaleexpress.com.au/news/local/news/general/xray-technology-has-potential-to-transform-archaeology/1721945.aspx?storypage=1
On her retirement as a teacher of art and mathematics at Bairnsdale Secondary College in East Gippsland, Jesse Walker knew exactly what she wanted to do: study archaeology at the University of New England.
She didn’t know then, however, that her two-year honours program would involve her in exploring the use of X-ray fluorescence in archaeological research.
Archaeology and palaeoanthropology at UNE acquired a portable Bruker X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) instrument at the end of 2008, and when Ms Walker began her archaeology honours program in 2009 she was recognised - with her background in mathematics - as an ideal candidate to explore its capabilities in archaeology.
The PXRF instrument offers the exciting possibility of analysing the elemental composition of ancient ceramics without the necessity of destroying the material being analysed.
Its versatility opens new avenues for researchers, as they can now study valuable museum specimens without moving them to a laboratory.
The technology involves the analysis of ‘secondary’ (or fluorescent) X-rays emitted by a material that has been excited by bombarding it with high-energy X-rays.
It is used in a variety of
disciplines, including geochemistry, forensic science and archaeology, but its potential in the study of ceramics - particularly those housed in museums - has received little attention.
Ms Walker has at her disposal not only the PXRF instrument but also a museum well-endowed with ancient ceramics: UNE’s Museum of Antiquities, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.
Using a set of potsherds (fragments of broken pottery) of known composition available to her through an ARC-funded research project on Iron Age trade and exchange, Ms Walker has figured out how to make the x -ray instrument suitable for the analysis of ancient ceramics.
She has used this same technology to analyse the elemental composition of two small ceramic vessels in the museum, dating from the early Iron Age.
“Patterns of ceramic elements can be difficult to interpret because people alter the clay - for example, by adding sand - during the manufacturing process,” Ms Walker said.
Her work will continue in 2010, but she believes she has already demonstrated that the instrument has exciting potential in the study of ancient ceramics.
“The PXRF offers the possibility of widespread use in museum collections, allowing researchers to investigate the sources - and subsequent movements through trade and other human activities - of high-quality ceramics,” she said.
Companies with Madison area operations also had a strong 2009
January 8, 2010 - By JUDY NEWMAN - Wisconsin State Journal
Several companies with significant operations in the Madison area also counted 2009 as a strong year for their stock.
http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/article_52e2d3a8-fca8-11de-b3ba-001cc4c03286.html
• Shares of Sears Holdings, parent company of Lands' End, Dodgeville, more than doubled, ending 2009 at $83.45, up 115 percent from their 2008 close at $38.87. Last Thursday, the stock topped $100 in trading during the day after Sears and several other retailers raised their projections for fourth-quarter profits.
Sales for retail companies overall were "surprisingly strong" for most of the year, said Todd Parrish, analyst with Robert W. Baird & Co., Milwaukee.
"Relative to the environment we're in, sales managed pretty well. There wasn't a desperate kind of unloading (merchandise)," Parrish said.
• Mattel, parent of American Girl, Middleton, saw a 25 percent gain, closing 2009 at $19.98, up from $16.00 a year earlier.
• Kraft, parent of Kraft/Oscar Mayer, Madison, inched up to $27.18 from the 2008 close of $26.85. The stock hit its 52-week low in March, when it fell to $20.81 a share.
• Shares of Bruker, whose Bruker AXS division is based in Fitchburg, tripled to $12.06, from $4.04 the year before. Bruker AXS makes analytical X-ray systems for scientists and researchers.
• Spectrum Brands was suspended from trading on the New York Stock Exchange in December 2008 after it fell in the range of pennies and got stuck there. After going through bankruptcy proceedings in 2009, the old stock was eliminated and new shares ended the year at $22.50.

January 07, 2010 - GenomeWeb staff reporter
http://www.genomeweb.com/proteomics/bruker-receives-more-100-systems-orders-tied-stimulus-programs
NEW YORK (GenomeWeb News) – Bruker today said that it has already received more than 100 systems orders associated with various global stimulus funding programs.
The firm said that all five of its operating divisions have received stimulus orders for instruments such as mass spectrometry, NMR, pre-clinical MRI, and X-ray. Bruker estimated the average selling prices of these orders were greater than $500,000 per system — and the total amount of stimulus orders it received in the second half of 2009 exceeded $70 million.
The Billerica, Mass.-based firm said that revenues from these orders would be recorded primarily in 2010 and into the first half of 2011. It also expects to receive additional orders from global stimulus programs during this year.
In September, Bruker said that global stimulus programs could contribute 5 percent — roughly $50 million — or greater revenue growth its core scientific business instruments business in 2010.
In early Thursday trade on the Nasdaq, shares of Bruker were up 2 percent at $13.35.
Max weighs in as new weapon against cheats
12-20-2009 - By BARRY LICHTER - Sunday Star Times - Sport Racing
Drug cheats beware – the racing laboratory has a new toy which will bust you in a millisecond.
http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/racing/3179545/Max-weighs-in-as-new-weapon-against-cheats
It sits in NZ Racing Laboratory Services' new building in West Auckland, just along the corridor from the solid phase extraction robots dubbed Mr Ed, Phar Lap, Desmond and Tornado which have been extracting illegal drugs from samples since the 1990s.
The German-made machine, which we'll nickname Max because it has such a daunting name – it's a Bruker MaXis liquid chromatography ultra high resolution quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer – cost the New Zealand Racing Board the best part of $800,000.
And with its just completed installation, our racing laboratory becomes one of the most advanced in the world, its state-of-the-art tool one which should make unscrupulous trainers very, very afraid.
"I feel like I've got a Ferrari," enthuses racing chemist and analyst Rob Howitt, as he explains the vital statistics of Max.
"We were the first racing lab in the world to apply high resolution technology to drug screening. Now we can expand this methodology with a far superior instrument."
The predecessor to Max, called the TOF, was bought in 2006. It took the laboratory, under the direction of head Dr Geoff Beresford, more than a year to develop high resolution methods for horse racing, tackling problems like dirtier urine and the need for increased sensitivity.
"Many of the major racing labs will be switching to high resolution techniques," says Howitt. "This is the sort of technology that will eventually make some of our older instruments redundant."
Max will take over the crucial job of routine screening the 8000 samples taken annually from the country's racing population of thoroughbreds, standardbreds and greyhounds.
Standing proudly amid his predecessors, with his 2.5m flight tube protruding between concrete beams in the ceiling, Max is in reality allowing the analysts to stage their own races – between molecules. The time it takes the molecules to reach the finish line allows the lab to accurately identify them.
What Max actually does is charge the molecules, suck them through a vacuum system, and very accurately measure their mass based on the time it takes them to travel from the bottom of the flight tube to the top and back again.
"A lot of compounds have the same nominal mass but this machine allows us to distinguish them by a mass difference equivalent to a couple of electrons," says Howitt.
Ad Feedback
Through a complex system of metal lenses, Max can measure compounds to an incredible accuracy of one one-thousandth of a mass unit, thanks to its ultra-high resolution.
For example, whereas conventional instruments would come up with a mass reading of 271, Max will spit out 271.0637, positively identifying, in one step, the compound as Nordazapam.
Previously, analysts had to smash the molecules apart and look at their fragmentation patterns, which often overlap, to distinguish them from the dozens of other compounds weighing around 271.
"We used to fingerprint them by smashing them up, now we just weigh them," says Howitt. "Instead of looking for different groups of drugs with different methods, we can now cover a vast array with one method, and look for a lot of things simultaneously."
But another real advantage of Max is it will allow more retrospective testing of samples when new designer drugs surface – a significant deterrent for potential drug cheats.
Because Max logs all readings and profiles samples, data can be reprocessed so analysts will be able to go straight to dodgy stored samples – meaning retesting of maybe 10 samples, rather than 2000.
Harness Racing New Zealand veterinary adviser Dr Andrew Grierson said the machine will be in full service for Christmas-New Year racing.
"The ability of the racing lab to detect things has been really souped up with this machine – it's incredibly sensitive and accurate."
Grierson said it would have no trouble picking up the drug at the centre of the latest fuss, Aminorex, a methamphetamine-like substance that metabolised from the sheep drench Levamisole.
As revealed in last week's Sunday Star-Times, HRNZ issued a warning to trainers to stop using the drench after nationwide intelligence that, instead of using it as a worming or immune system boost, cheats were using it as a go-fast.
"The methodology of testing for it had been difficult overseas, but this machine makes it easy.
"Nothing will get past it."
NIH Funds Slow to Reach Vendors, But MS and Other Instrument Firms May Be First to Benefit, Report Says
December 17, 2009 - Genome Web
Citing Bruker and Illumina, instrument firms, including several mass spectrometry firms, have seen little stimulus funding so far and expect such funds not to impact their fourth-quarter earnings results, according to the report from Thomas Weisel Partners. However, the investment firm said that once recipients start spending the grants, instrument vendors could be "the biggest beneficiaries of the initial funding wave."

Family scales back secondary offering of Bruker stock
September 18, 2009 by MassDevice staff
A proposed deal by members of the founding family of the Billerica, Mass.-based maker of scientific equipment is cut by nearly two-thirds.
The Billerica, Mass.-based manufacturer of medical imaging equipment and chemical detection devices announced Friday that the mother and brother of Bruker CEO Frank Laukien intend to soon sell 12 million shares through a secondary offering of stock.
At its current price, Isolde Laukien-Kleiner would receive about $2 million in proceeds from the offering while Marc Laukien is in line for slightly more than $10 million. The company will not receive any money through the offering, which is being managed by Goldman, Sachs & Co., J.P. Morgan and Deutsche Bank Securities.
The number of shares being offered is down significantly from the nearly 20 million shares the two were planning to sell earlier this summer when Bruker filed a shelf registration with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Dirk Laukien — a Bruker vice president and Marc and Frank Laukien's half-brother — also withdrew his bid to sell a sizable portion of his Bruker holdings as part of the current offering.
Dirk Laukien had planned to sell up to 14,200 Bruker shares.
Both Marc Laukien and his mother — neither of whom are active with the company — along with several other family members have been steadily reducing their respective stakes in Bruker in recent years. The family sold a combined 22.4 million shares through a pair of secondary offerings in early 2007 and in 2004 and have also used private stock sales and a 2006 merger with Bruker Optics to cash out sizable portions of their holdings.
As part of the current deal, Frank Laukien has has agreed to a private purchase of 100,000 shares from his brother, according to a new prospectus filed late Thursday.
Bruker stock closed yesterday at $10.02 a share, up about 20 percent from the range where Bruker shares traded three months ago when the secondary offering was first proposed in June.

Rhode Island Hospital Gets $11M NIH Grant for Cancer Core
August 31, 2009 - By a GenomeWeb staff reporter
NEW YORK (GenomeWeb News) – The National Center for Research Resources has granted Rhode Island Hospital $11 million to renew the hospital's status as a Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) Center for Cancer Research and Development, the hospital said today.
The five-year grant will continue the COBRE CCRD programs at Rhode Island Hospital, which uses it to offer cancer researchers access and use of a proteomics core and a molecular pathology core. The proteomics core provides mass spectrometry and analysis tools and services, and the molecular pathology core provides a tissue bank for storing and cataloging human and animal tissues and a range of services.
The aim is to support researchers who seek biomarkers for use in developing early detection and diagnostic tools for cancer.
The hospital also this year received a $500,000 economic stimulus funding grant to purchase an imaging mass spectrometer for the proteomics core, Douglas Hixson, a Brown University professor who directs the hospital's Molecular Carcinogenesis Laboratory, said in a statement. The center purchased a Bruker Daltonics Ultraflex MALDI TOF/TOF with the funds.
"By allowing investigators to identify proteins differentially expressed in malignant and normal cells by directly scanning tissue sections, this exciting new technology will accelerate the identification of biomarkers by directly linking the fields of proteomics and molecular pathology," said Hixson. The new mass spectrometer is expected to "become a catalyst for collaborative interactions aimed at developing novel clinical and basic research applications," he added.
Since the hospital opened the CCRD facility in 2003 it has been involved in a range of cancer-related discoveries, Hixson said. "We've identified a new mode of transmitting signals regulating the growth and spread of cancer, a new gene that determines sensitivity to anti cancer drugs, another gene elevated by acid reflux that increases the risk of esophageal cancer and two novel tumor suppressor genes whose loss elevates the risk of stomach cancer."

Bruker Announces the Availability of the World's First 18 Tesla FTMS Magnet at IMSC 2009
Sunday, August 30, 2009 - Foxbusiness
BREMEN, Germany, Aug 30, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) ----At the 18th International Mass Spectrometry Conference, Bruker Daltonics today announced the availability of the world's first 18 tesla (T) magnet for FTMS. This unique, actively-shielded, refrigerated 18T magnet system with excellent homogeneity and field stability, represents the world's highest field FTMS magnet, providing unique and novel scientific capabilities that can be applied to some of today's most important, complex, and challenging protein, polymer, and small molecule analyses. The unmatched performance of FTMS at 18 tesla will significantly impact a variety of research areas including protein identification, petroleomics, metabolomics, small molecule tissue molecular imaging, and environmental sample analysis.
The new magnet system provides dramatic increases in FTMS resolution, speed, and dynamic range. Additionally, the routine observation and measurement of isotopic fine structure of molecules of interest will be facilitated and extended to larger molecules to provide another dimension of specificity for the determination of exact molecular formulae. Bruker has a long history of magnet development with many 'firsts' in high field technology. The latest of these achievements has been the June 2009 introduction of the world's first 1 GHz NMR system (23.5 tesla).
"The development of the 18T magnet for FTMS represents the next leap forward for high end FTMS," said Dr. Gerhard Roth, Managing Director of Bruker BioSpin GmbH in Karlsruhe, Germany. He continued: "The design of this new horizontal bore 18T FTMS magnet is based on Bruker's extensive design and production experience for ultra high field vertical and horizontal bore magnets for NMR, MRI, EPR and FTMS, combining the most advanced features and many of our key proprietary technologies."
Bruker Daltonics is now accepting orders for its new 18T FTMS magnet with delivery 12 months after order.

Wyeth Corporation comes to the aid of UH Hilo's College of Pharmacy
Aug. 28, 2009 - University of Hawaii at Hilo
The University of Hawaii at Hilo College of Pharmacy will soon install a major instrument that will help further research at the university, thanks to a gift from the Wyeth Corporation.
The Bruker-Biospin Avance DRX 400 is a 400-megahertz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (NMR) valued at a quarter million dollars, which will be used to identify the structures of unknown chemicals including potential new drugs. The equipment is being configured at the new laboratory space off Stainback Highway currently occupied by Pharmacy until the growing college has a permanent home.
“The gift of the NMR from Wyeth removes a major impediment to scientific research that must compete on a national or international scale,” said Dr. Robert P. Borris, associate dean for research at the College of Pharmacy. “Not having this kind of equipment tells federal funding agencies such as the National Science Foundation that we don’t have the facilities in which to do cutting edge research. Having the NMR at UH Hilo means we won't have to travel to Oʻahu or to the mainland to conduct our work. We're very grateful to Wyeth for helping us to establish a cutting-edge scientific base for students at UH Hilo.”
Pharmacy collaborates with faculty in chemistry, biology and biochemistry, and hopes to give ample access to anyone at UH Hilo in need of this fundamental tool for analytical chemistry, Borris said. Many of the faculty have used similar equipment, but will have to complete one or two days of training specific to this particular instrument.
The NMR uses the behavior of atoms in a strong magnetic field to help identify the structure of chemicals, both alone and in mixtures. Research that would require a NMR might ultimately result in the discovery of a new drug, which may have been synthesized in the laboratory or isolated from some natural product.
Dr. Guy T. Carter, assistant vice president of chemical technologies at Wyeth Research's Chemical & Screening Sciences, said that Wyeth tries to place retired equipment that is still functional with an academic research group that will derive the greatest benefit. The drug company, based in New York, typically chooses institutions that are in close proximity to one of their sites, such as Columbia University in Manhattan and Temple University in Philadelphia. Carter said he was able to direct the NMR to UH Hilo through personal communications with Borris.
“I find it personally gratifying that the instrument will enable UH Hilo students to have access to high quality NMR data for their studies," Carter said. “I am particularly hopeful that the NMR will be valuable in advancing research in natural products drug discovery, which we are passionate about at Wyeth.”
The gift is a signal of support from the pharmaceutical industry for the growing College of Pharmacy, said Dean John M. Pezzuto.
“We are competing for the same funding that universities everywhere need, so it's absolutely critical that we can rely on the pharmaceutical industry,” Pezzuto said. “Support from Wyeth Research is reassuring because it shows we're headed in the right direction. We are determined to continue on our planned path to improve healthcare in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific region.”

Bruker Corp. gets stimulated by global recovery efforts
August 26, 2009 by MassDevice staff
The Billerica, Mass.-based medical equipment maker says it's booked more than $10 million in global stimulus orders this year.
Bruker Corp.'s prediction of windfalls from economic stimulus programs around the world turned out to be true, as the company says it's booked more than $10 million in new orders stemming from stimulus cash in Japan, Europe and the U.S.
The Billerica, Mass.-based medical equipment manufacturer said last month that government stimulus spending could eventually pump an extra $200 million — or possibly more — of new revenue into its coffers.
And according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the money is already starting to trickle in.
As part of its presentation at an institutional investors conference in Zurich, Switzerland, company executives revealed that Bruker received "stimulus orders" in Japan, Europe and America, including five orders from Japan for more than $3 million (and not including $12 million worth of previously booked Japanese orders).
"Additional significant NMR, mRI, EPR, X-ray crystallography, high-end mass spectrometry and other systems orders are expected from global stimulus funding in Q3 and Q4 of 2009, and into 2010," according to the presentation.
Bruker posted sales of $252.5 million during the three months ended June 30, down nearly 19 percent compared with $311.5 million during the same period last year. Net income for the period plunged more than 40 percent to $12.9 million, compared with $21.7 million in the year-ago quarter.

Bruker CEO ups stake
August 4, 2009 by MassDevice staff
Billerica, Mass.-based imaging equipment maker CEO Frank Laukien boosts his stake in the company to 23.4 percent.
Laukien family members may sell some of their Bruker Corp. stock from time to time, but it doesn't seem to stay away for long.
Less than two months after his mother and two siblings disclosed plans to unload a large chunk of their stake, CEO Frank Laukien bought up another 150,000 shares in the Billerica, Mass.-based medical imaging equipment manufacturer from outside investors, according to filings with the federal Securities and Exchange Commission.
Laukien made the purchases — $1.51 million worth of stock at an average price of $10.03 — via a series of small transactions July 31 and August 3. The latest buying spree follows a familiar Laukien pattern established in recent years: They sell and he buys, although not necessarily from each other.
Since last November, Frank Laukien has spent close to $7.5 million of his own funds to acquire an additional 1.6 million shares. He now owns 38,449,445 shares, or roughly 23.4 percent of the company.
Other Laukien family members control another 45 percent of Bruker stock. That combined stake, however, would dip to roughly 22.5 percent if the company moves ahead with a proposed secondary offering that includes the sale of 35 million shares now held by Isolde Laukien-Kleiner and Dirk and Marc Laukien.
Frank Laukien's recent purchases came through open-market deals, rather than the exercising of options or other stock awards. He was also a significant player in overall trading of Bruker stock during the past few days, accounting for 14 percent of total volume on Friday and Monday.
One reason might be Bruker Corp.'s rather stingy ways with option grants. Frank Laukien holds vested options to buy a total of 175,000 shares — with only 75,000 of those options priced below Monday's closing price of $10.09, according to company proxy statements.

Comment and Outlook
Frank Laukien, Bruker’s President and CEO, commented: “Considering the challenging economic conditions in the industrial markets, we are pleased with our performance in the second quarter and first half of 2009. In the second quarter of 2009, we experienced solid top line growth sequentially, while the year-over-year revenue comparison was expected to be more difficult due to our revenue spike in the second quarter of 2008. On the bottom line, our cost-cutting measures, the strength of our new product lines and the impact of our business initiatives had a positive impact on our second quarter 2009 results, and contributed to our 54% sequential growth in net income.”
Dr. Laukien continued: “During the second quarter we continued to strengthen our product portfolio and launched several compelling mass spectrometry products at ASMS 2009, while also introducing the world’s first 1 Gigahertz NMR system. Our life-science mass spectrometry business delivered strong double-digit revenue growth and significant margin improvements in the second quarter of 2009. Moreover, after the acquisition of the ACCEL RI business by our Bruker Advanced Supercon business, we have established the new Bruker Energy & Supercon Technologies division, which is emerging as a global leader in superconductors and supercon devices, as well as in advanced technologies for energy research and next-generation grid infrastructure.”
Bruker’s Chief Financial Officer, Bill Knight, added: “While the downturn in the global economy continues to be challenging to navigate, we are relatively well positioned to handle these challenges with our strong technology and IP base, our high-performance product portfolio and our broad international diversification. Moreover, we derive nearly 70% of our revenue from universities and medical schools, as well as from other non-profit and government customers, who tend to be less sensitive to economic conditions. Going forward, we expect the global government stimulus programs to have a positive impact on our high-end life-science and research systems business, as well as on our new Bruker Energy & Supercon Technologies division, starting in the second half of 2009, accelerating in 2010, and continuing into 2011.”

Spectrometer installation under way at Core Lab
Tuesday, August 5, 2008 By Ben McNeely - independenttribune.com
KANNAPOLIS - The room is ready and the crane is in place.
Workers began installation of four nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers Monday at the Core Research Laboratory. The supermagnets will be the centerpiece of the Core Lab’s state-of-the-art equipment cache at the North Carolina Research Campus.
Castle & Cooke president Lynne Scott Safrit said the installation process will probably take about three to four weeks.
“It’s really exciting here,” she said. “This month is when you really start to see the scientific equipment start to move in.”
The NMRs - powerful supermagnets that allow researchers to study component parts of molecules - are just some of the major pieces of scientific equipment to be installed in the Core Lab. Bruker Biospin, a German scientific equipment company, is manufacturing the NMRs for the research campus.
Outside the Core Lab, workers set up a crane that will lift the 950-mHz into the air and down into the Core Lab’s basement. Drivers on Main Street slowed down to see what was going on.
Inside the basement laboratory, four NMRs will sit - two of them, the 950 mHz and the 700 mHz, on a specially designed floating floor, Safrit said, to keep them stable. Another NMR lab, on the fourth floor, will feature a 400 mHz NMR. Two technicians from Bruker will spend about a year in Kannapolis, calibrating the NMRs to make sure they are working within optimal working parameters.
In the basement, workers are completing work on the vivarium, a large containment area for keeping live plant and animal specimens used in research, Safrit said.
Dole Food Company owner David Murdock left Kannapolis on Friday after a visit with TV’s Martha Stewart. Safrit said Murdock was “very excited” about the progress made at the research campus.
“He hadn’t seen it since late May, when he was last here,” Safrit said.
Since May, new streetscapes and landscaping have been installed on the campus. As the Core Lab nears completion, the UNC and N.C. State buildings are also close to opening.
Safrit said Castle & Cooke is eyeing a date in late September or early October for a grand opening celebration for the Core Lab.

A Contact Lens for Lasers
A tiny lens integrated into semiconductor lasers promises better portable chemical sensors.
Monday, July 28, 2008 By Katherine Bourzac - Technology Review
Researchers at Harvard University and Hamamatsu Photonics have created a highly directional semiconductor laser that should--by averting light loss with a nano-patterned metal coating akin to a contact lens--enable highly sensitive portable chemical sensors and cheaper, more efficient optical communications.
The new technology consists of a metal grating patterned on the light-emitting face of the laser. The grating decreases the divergence of the laser light by a factor of 25, eliminating the need for bulky, expensive mirrors and lenses. "It's a hell of a lot smaller" than traditional optics, says Alan Willner, who leads the Optical Communications Laboratory at the University of Southern California. "You can integrate it right on the [laser] structure," says Willner, who was not involved in the research. What's more, by adjusting the design of the metal grating, the researchers say, they can tune it to work with any kind of semiconductor laser.
Semiconductor lasers are widely used in everything from DVD players to telecommunication networks. In chemical-sensing systems, they're used to illuminate gaseous compounds whose identity and concentration can be determined by looking at the spectrum of light they emit.
As light travels out of a laser, it spreads out in a cone shape. Even with meticulously aligned lenses and mirrors, some light is wasted. These additional optics are expensive and make laser systems bulky. The Harvard researchers, led by physicist Federico Capasso, attacked the problem by depositing a layer of metal a few hundred nanometers thick on the facet of a laser, then etching it with slits and an aperture. Such metal gratings can be created using conventional fabrication techniques.
A large portion of light coming out the aperture bends 90 degrees and then propagates down the metal grating in a form of energy called surface plasmons. The grooves in the metal grating then scatter this energy into a narrow beam of light.
The researchers demonstrated the technique on a quantum-cascade laser, a type of laser developed by Capasso at Bell Labs in 1994. Quantum-cascade lasers can emit light over a broad spectrum--from the infrared to the visible. Light from the type of quantum-cascade laser used to test the gratings normally diverges at angles ranging from 40 to 80 degrees. In an article published online this week in the journal Nature Photonics, the Harvard and Hamamatsu researchers report that light from their laser diverges by only 2.5 degrees without significantly reducing the laser's power output.
This difference could make it possible to integrate quantum-cascade lasers into portable chemical sensors. Systems incorporating such lasers can detect a wide range of compounds with great sensitivity. However, due to divergence, these lasers are currently impractical for chemical sensors. The lasers aren't powerful enough over long distances to perform sensitive measurements. Bulky lenses improve their sensitivity but make it difficult to transport them.
Bruker Optics, of Billerica, MA, is collaborating with Capasso to develop chemical sensors incorporating compact lasers for the battlefield. "Quantum-cascade lasers would be immensely useful to monitor the output from power plants and automobiles and to detect chemical agents," says Tom Tague, chief scientist at Bruker Optics.
"This is very exciting work," says Claire Gmachl, a professor of electrical engineering at Princeton University. "This is an important advance for quantum-cascade lasers, but also offers new prospects for other types of semiconductor lasers." The metal gratings "should be useful over a plethora of applications, for any optical signal processing," says Willner.
