Bruker stock jumps after contract announcement

Thursday, January 15, 2009 - Boston Business Journal

Bruker’s stock spikes on spectrometer order Billerica-based Bruker Daltonics, a subsidiary of Bruker Corp., announced today the sale of 51 mass spectrometers to the National Japanese Police Agency.

The deal is worth $12 million. The announcement caused the stock to rise over 36 percent to $4.57 in late afternoon trading Wednesday — up from the previous-day’s close of $3.35. The deal calls for the spectrometers to be installed in all of the Japanese Policy Agency’s forensic labs and will be delivered in March.

A mass spectrometer separates and identifies certain molecules from compounds. For instance, the spectrometer can identify dangerous substances like melamine in food. Bruker (Nasdaq: BRKR) CEO Frank Laukien recently announced he would take a 25 percent salary cut, from $424,000 in 2008 to $318,750 this year.

Bruker's revenue during the first nine months in 2008 was $242 million, up from $214 million in the same period in 2007. Net income for the three quarters ended Sept. 30 was $17.8 million

The Billerica-company’s stock price fell 70 percent in 2008, but is up roughly 12 percent this year.
