won't see it back to that today, I'm afraid, but we bottomed at $36.25 and moved back up, good sign. Just all stocks, especially the tech sector got beat down bad the last couple weeks. Afraid AAPL does that, it slips, all tech stocks slip.
But the avg analyst has BRCM's price target at $45, based on last qtr's earnings......

They paid their dividend March 5th, which means the next one would be due early June. That is a long wait and this past week and a half has been a killer for any stock (April period). I'm assuming you bought in April, because I was up almost 10% on March 27th. It's not BRCM's fault.

The purchase price will be paid in cash, minus a portion of such purchase price attributable to certain unvested employee stock options that will be paid in Broadcom restricted stock units. Additional consideration of up to $10 million in cash will be reserved for future payment to holders of BroadLight capital stock and other rights upon satisfaction of certain performance goals. Excluding any purchase accounting related adjustments and fair value measurements, Broadcom expects the acquisition of BroadLight to be roughly neutral to earnings per share in 2012. The transaction is expected to close in Broadcom's second quarter of 2012 and remains subject to customary closing conditions.

Broadcom to buy BroadLight for $230 mln -report


TEL AVIV, March 20 (Reuters) - U.S. chipmaker Broadcom will sign an agreement later on Tuesday to buy BroadLight, an Israel-based developer of processors, for $230 million, TheMarker financial news website reported.

BroadLight provides semiconductors and software for fiber-to-the-premises broadband access networks.

The two companies signed a letter of intent four months ago and have now completed negotiations, the Israeli website said.

Officials at BroadLight could not be reached for comment.

BroadLight was established in 2000 and has raised $55 million, according to TheMarker, from investors that include Azure Capital Partners, Benchmark Capital, Motorola Ventures and Star Ventures.

This would be Broadcom's 10th acquisition in Israel, including Provigent, which it bought last year for $313 million.

It would be the latest in a series of deals in Israel's high-tech sector. Last week Cisco Systems said it would pay $5 billion for NDS, a developer of pay TV software that was founded in Israel while Avaya announced the acquisition of video conferencing firm Radvision for $230 million.

In the medical devices sector, Covidien said on Monday it would pay about $300 million for Israel's superDimension.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 15 (Reuters) - Apple's new iPad uses chips made by Qualcomm , Broadcom , Samsung Electronics and other semiconductor makers, according to a firm that cracked open one of the devices.

The newest iPad went on sale in Australia early on Friday, and at the front of a line of fans hoping to get hold of the 4G-ready tablet computer was a tinkerer from California gadget-repair firm iFixit, who quickly took one apart for a Web blog.

Supplying parts for Apple's iPhones and iPads, the industry's gold standards, is considered a coup for chipmakers and other manufacturers.

The iPad includes a Qualcomm LTE cellphone chip as well as a Qualcomm wireless modem for 3G and 4G. Broadcom supplies a semiconductor handling wireless tasks like WiFi and Bluetooth, according to iFixit.
Fueled by cans of carbonated caffeine drinks, iFixit cofounder Luke Soules' before-dawn teardown at a Melbourne computer shop found that Apple suppliers Qualcomm, Broadcom and Samsung have maintained their key roles in the newest iPad.

The iPad's new A5X application processor, with improved graphics horsepower, is based on energy-efficient technology licensed from Britain's ARM Holding and is manufactured by Qualcomm, as in past Apple devices.

Apple doesn't disclose which company makes the components that go into its smartphones, and insists its suppliers keep quiet.

Analysts recommend caution in drawing conclusions from the teardowns because Cupertino, California-based Apple sometimes uses more than one supplier for a part. What is found in one iPad may not be found in others.

Still, teardowns remain a key source of information for investors interested in betting on Apple's suppliers, and the appearance of unexpected chips can move stocks.

"There are a whole lot of hedge funds out there that like to shoot first and ask questions later," said Alex Gauna, an analyst at JMP who covers technology stocks.

The third-generation iPad from Apple - which sports a high-definition "retina" display and comes with a better camera - is capable of operating on high-speed 4G "LTE".

A source familiar with the device's components told Reuters this week that Samsung and LG Electronics will both supply their liquid crystal displays for the iPad.

iFixit said the iPad's display, removed using two bright orange suction cups, appears to be from Samsung.

A NAND flash memory chip, used to store media like music and video, is supplied by Toshiba . Japan's Elpida provides the DRAM chips.

The iPad teardown also revealed chips from Avago Technologies , Triquint Semiconductor and Fairchild .

One of the more widely followed teardown firms, iFixit is hired by a variety of clients who use its data for competitive intelligence, in patent disputes or to keep current on industry benchmarks.

The new SFP+ physical layer transceivers (PHYs) include a variety of dual, quad and octal-channel devices for data center and enterprise networks, enabling the transition from 1GbE to 10GbE and 40GbE. Based on advanced 40nm CMOS architecture, the new devices deliver 10 times more bandwidth than previous generation 1GbE PHYs. Consumer demand and the exponential increase in Internet traffic are driving the need for higher density processing and transmission of data. Data center, cloud and enterprise networks are transitioning from 1GbE to 10GbE and 40GbE. Analysts predict overall 10GbE ports to increase from 24 million in 2011 to 76 million in 2015.(1) In addition, 40G port shipments are projected to grow from 36,000 in 2011 to 795,000 in 2015.(2)

Broadcom's new SFP+ and QSFP+ PHYs (BCM84728, BCM84748, BCM84758, and BCM84784) are designed to meet the increasing bandwidth and traffic demands being placed on the network, with greater functionality, flexibility and performance for system managers. All four devices feature Broadcom's fourth generation of EDC technology, enabling data transmission on a 10GbE or 40GbE serial interface. This feature is ideal for applications requiring transmission over multimode fiber (MMF) at distances up to 300m (LRM) using OM3 fiber and SFP+ copper twin-axial cable (CR).

UPDATE 1-Rambus loses first round of patent case at ITC

WASHINGTON, March 2 (Reuters) - Chipmakers LSI and Mediatek Inc and chip design house STMicroelectronics NV did not violate Rambus Inc's patented chip technology, a judge at the International Trade Commission said on Friday.

Rambus, which is involved in extensive patent infringement litigation, had accused a long list of companies of infringing six patents for, among other things, memory controllers, which retrieve information when it is needed, and high-speed chip-to-chip communication systems.

In the past year, Rambus settled patent litigation with Nvidia Corp , Broadcom Corp and Freescale Semiconductor Holdings I Ltd . In addition, one of the six patents was dropped from the complaint.

The decision by ITC Judge Theodore Essex is not final. The full commission is expected to make a ruling in July.

"We have yet to receive the decision, but are disappointed with the initial determination of no violation," said Thomas Lavelle, senior vice president and general counsel at Rambus in an emailed statement. "We believe in the strength of our portfolio and remain committed to protecting our patented inventions from unlicensed use."

Rambus' share price has been volatile due to its court fights. The company's shares rose sharply in early February following news it settled patent disputes with archrival Nvidia. And its share price dropped almost 60 percent late last year after the company lost a $4 billion antitrust lawsuit against Micron Technology Inc and Hynix Semiconductor Inc .

Three of the five patents at issue in this case - collectively known as the Barth patents - have been declared invalid by an appeals board at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Two were declared invalid in September and a third in January.

But the patents remain valid during the appeals process, which has not yet been exhausted.

Rambus has aggressively used the three Barth patents to pursue infringement claims against technology companies.

The case at the International Trade Commission is Number 337-753.

Both of these new chips are manufactured in a 40nm process and employ the most advanced power management techniques, thereby significantly increasing battery life in products that use them. While the high end of the market is expected to adopt 5G WiFi, these chips move the bar for mid- and low-tier devices, bringing a cost effective dual-band implementation to smartphones and an equally cost effective dual stream solution to tablets.

Smartphones and tablets continue to grow in popularity among mainstream consumers and are increasingly being used for sharing content, multiplayer gaming and watching high definition video. Features such as Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Display often use the 5GHz frequency band, making dual-band operation essential in portable products. The new Broadcom® InConcert BCM43241 and BCM4334 combo chips feature advanced dual-band Wi-Fi technology that utilize both 2.4GHz and 5GHz radio channels. Qualcomm Inc. said it agreed to pay $891 million to Broadcom Corp. over four years as part of a settlement of a series of bitter legal disputes between the rival chip makers.

Under a deal announced late Sunday, Qualcomm and Broadcom agreed to end their litigation and exchange rights to each others' patents. Besides ending patent suits in the U.S., Broadcom agreed to drop antitrust complaints it has filed against Qualcomm in Europe and South Korea.

The deal is expected to help Broadcom become a more significant supplier of chips for cellphones, a market in which Qualcomm plays a pivotal role because of its control of key patents.

"At a time when the wireless industry should be focused on moving forward, the agreement removes uncertainty for Qualcomm and its customers," said Paul Jacobs, Qualcomm's chief executive, in prepared remarks.

Don Rosenberg, Qualcomm's general counsel, added in an interview that the deal preserves a key element of his company's business model: Qualcomm will be able to seek patent royalties from cellphone makers that use Broadcom chips. Royalties from handset makers are a key contributor to Qualcomm's profits.

Qualcomm disclosed Wednesday that it was in advanced talks about a "global settlement" of the disputes with Broadcom. The surprise development caused Qualcomm to postpone the release of its second-quarter results, which had been scheduled that day and are now expected to be announced Monday morning.

The two Southern California chip makers have waged a series of court battles. Broadcom, of Irvine, Calif., is a major supplier of communications chips but is a newcomer to the cellular arena.

One obstacle to Broadcom's plans in that market was the need to negotiate a patent license from Qualcomm. That company, based in San Diego, invented some widely used cellular technologies. Qualcomm receives patent royalties from chip makers and cellphone makers that use what the industry calls third-generation, or 3G, networks.

To put pressure on Qualcomm to grant favorable licensing terms, Broadcom filed multiple patent suits and other litigation against Qualcomm. Though Qualcomm filed suits of its own against Broadcom, the latter had chalked up more court victories so far.

Under the settlement, Broadcom will not have to pay Qualcomm patent royalties on the chips it sells. "Other than the payment we are making, neither of us is making ongoing payments," Mr. Rosenberg said.

Broadcom had argued in court that Qualcomm did not have the legal right to charge royalties both for cellphones and the chips inside them, under a principle known as "patent exhaustion."

Qualcomm's payments to Broadcom include $200 million that will be paid in the current quarter, ending June 30, the companies said.

"We have set aside our differences while addressing the needs of our customers, our shareholders and the industry," said Scott McGregor, Broadcom's chief executive, in a statement.

Broadcom Files Suit Asserting Qualcomm's Licensing Practices Violate U.S. Law

IRVINE, Calif., Oct 08, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that it has filed a complaint seeking a declaratory judgment that the sales and licensing practices of Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) amount to patent misuse, that Qualcomm patents are "exhausted" by Qualcomm's practices, and that Qualcomm's patents and patent licenses are unenforceable, under applicable U.S. law.
The complaint, filed yesterday in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California in San Diego, asserts, among other things, that Qualcomm's use of "exhausted" patents to control post-sale use of products in the wireless communications industry results in a double recovery of royalties (or other consideration) to Qualcomm for the use of its patents. It further asserts that these practices constitute patent misuse that has brought Qualcomm a financial windfall and brought harm to the industry and consumers.

The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled on the scope of the patent exhaustion doctrine in Quanta Computer, Inc. v. LG Electronics, Inc.
