BLDW = $~~ Since the demand for wind energy is growing that leads me to believe that more and more companies here and abroad will be seeking to add wind energy to help with the green initiative. With BLDW having a unique roof top building design which can be used in locations that other turbines aren't able to be used, and since they already have them on a major department store chain and are working on a LOI on another major retail chain, I would think BLDW will be having other companies seek them out before long.

GESI =$$$ Here is a nice article on gasification.
www.synthesisservices.com/gasification.php
What is Gasification?
The GTC answer:
Gasification is a flexible, reliable, and clean energy technology that can turn a variety of low-value feedstocks into high-value products, help reduce our dependence on foreign oil and natural gas, and can provide a clean alternative source of baseload electricity, fertilizers, fuels, and chemicals.
It is a manufacturing process that converts any material containing carbon—such as coal, petroleum coke (petcoke), or biomass—into synthesis gas (syngas). The syngas can be burned to produce electricity or further processed to manufacture chemicals, fertilizers, liquid fuels, substitute natural gas (SNG), or hydrogen.
Environmental Benefits of Gasification
Gasification is an environmental solution
The world is facing rapid growth in energy demand, persistently high energy prices, and a challenge to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from power generation and manufacturing. No single technology or resource can solve the problem, but gasification can be part of the solution along with renewable power sources such as wind and energy efficiency programs.
Gasification can enhance the U.S. and world energy portfolio while creating fewer air emissions, using less water, and generating less waste than most traditional energy technologies. Whether used for power generation, for production of substitute natural gas, or for production of a large number of energy intensive products, gasification has significant environmental benefits over conventional technologies.
Gasification provides significant environmental benefits
Gasification plants produce significantly lower quantities of criteria air pollutants.
Gasification can reduce the environmental impact of waste disposal because it can use waste products as feedstocks—generating valuable products from materials that would otherwise be disposed as wastes.
Gasification's byproducts are non-hazardous and are readily marketable.
Gasification plants use significantly less water than traditional coal-based power generation, and can be designed so they recycle their process water, discharging none into the surrounding environment.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) can be captured from an industrial gasification plant using commercially proven technologies. In fact, since 2000, the Great Plains Substitute Natural Gas plant in North Dakota has been capturing the same amount of CO2 as a 400 MW coal power plant would produce and sending that CO2 via pipeline to Canada for Enhanced Oil Recovery.
Gasification offers the cleanest, most efficient means of producing electricity from coal and the lowest cost option for capturing CO2 from power generation, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
Economic Benefits of Gasification
Gasification can compete effectively in high-price energy environments to provide power and products.
Gasification can be used to turn lower-priced feedstocks, such as petcoke and coal, into very valuable products like electricity, substitute natural gas, fuels, chemicals, and fertilizers. For example, a chemical plant can gasify petcoke or high sulfur coal instead of using high-priced natural gas, thereby reducing its operating costs.
While a gasification power plant is capital intensive (like any very large manufacturing plant), its operating costs are potentially lower than conventional processes or coal-fired plants because gasification plants are more efficient and require less back-end pollution control equipment. With continued research and development efforts and commercial operating experience, the cost of these units will continue to decrease.
Gasification offers wide fuel flexibility. A gasification plant can vary the mix of solid feedstocks, or run on gas or liquid feedstocks—giving it more freedom to adjust to the price and availability of its feedstocks.
The ability to produce a number of high-value products at the same time (polygeneration) also helps a facility offset its capital and operating costs. In addition, the principal gasification byproducts (sulfur and slag) are readily marketable. For example, sulfur can be used as a fertilizer and slag can be used in roadbed construction or in roofing materials.
A state-of-the-art gasification power plant with commercially available technology can perform with efficiency in a range of 38-41 percent. Technology improvements now in advanced testing will boost efficiency to significantly higher levels.
Gasification can increase domestic investment and jobs in manufacturing industries that have recently been in decline because of high energy costs.
Many predict that coal-based power plants and other manufacturing facilities will be required to capture and store CO2, or participate in a carbon cap and trade market. In this scenario, gasification projects will have a cost advantage over conventional technologies. While CO2 capture and sequestration will increase the cost of all forms of power generation, an IGCC plant can capture and compress CO2 at one-half the cost of a traditional pulverized coal plant. Other gasification-based options, including production of motor fuels, chemicals, fertilizers, or hydrogen, to name a few, have even lower carbon capture and compression costs. This will provide a significant economic and environmental benefit in a carbon-constrained world.

BTI values renewable energy and the development of a distributed generation-centric industry that focuses on making on-site power. They are strong advocates for wind power, solar power (which they compliment nicely) and the ‘DG’ model. They believe that involvement in, advocacy of, and contribution to the renewable energy wind industry is an important aspect of their business as they maintain their focus on delivering an effective rooftop wind energy solution.
Building Turbines Company History
bldwAs a commercial office building owner, Mr. John F. Graham Sr. began to realize the need for an effective renewable energy solution to help offset his demanding energy bill. Mr. Graham felt the wind’s potential when he was on his building’s roof. He decided to personally pursue the development of a viable rooftop mounted wind turbine.
Taking advantage of the fact that he owns the building, Mr. Graham began developing smaller models of the horizontal-axis wind turbine for mounting onto his building’s roof. At one point, with the second floor entirely vacant, Mr. Graham created his own wind tunnel using HVAC blowers to test the theories and models. John’s mission is to create the world’s first HAWT (horizontal-axis wind turbine) for rooftop mounting so that he could help make the world a better place through the robust and reliable creation of ‘distributed’ electric power from Mother Nature’s clean and renewable source – the wind.
Rooftop wind turbines can convert under-utilized rooftop space into "distributed generation" (DG) power sites. Most building rooftops can support multiple wind turbines that can share a single grid-tie to the building. The sheer magnitude of the available rooftop space throughout the USA combined with the wide-scale deployment potential of rooftop wind turbine generators can make a meaningful contribution to meeting the current renewable energy goals of many corporations, municipalities, states and federal departments and agencies.
Today, Building Turbines is a publicly traded company with a cross-functional team of building construction and energy experienced business leaders. With momentum occurring on all fronts, the BTI team is committed to forging a sustainable renewable energy solution provider business model. BTI will manage a lean organization of carefully chosen outsource partners to ensure a customer-centric and effective over-all solution from manufacturing to installation exists across the USA.
The Next Phase in Renewable Energy
Affordable rooftop wind power is now available for your building. Today, wind energy is used to generate electricity that powers millions of American homes and businesses. Wind power is also widely recognized as one of most desirable and fastest-growing sources of clean and renewable energy. Until now however, the growth of wind power that they truly need to meet their growing energy demands has been limited by the cost prohibitive nature of current solutions.
The team at Building Turbines realized the need for a reliable rooftop wind turbine that effectively dealt with the structural and mechanical issues and provided the customer a unique, innovative, and compelling way to make clean renewable power on-site. They recognize America’s need to move forward with deployment of wind energy solutions that help them all reduce their dependency on fossil fuels and preserve the environment.
Building Turbines Technology
bldw Famous Quote: “We do not inherit the earth from our parents, we borrow it from our children.”
The team at Building Turbines believes in a multi-faceted approach to meeting today’s demanding energy requirements. They also believe that renewable energy sources should play a prominent role.
The sun shines every day for all of them, free of charge and the wind blows for free as well. Non-renewable energy sources can cost a lot of money to find and move. They must take the fossil fuels from the ground and ship them long distances to places where they can be used.
Oil must be refined before it can be used. This is expensive. They also have to pay to clean up the pollution they cause. Economically speaking as coal and oil supplies get used up, their prices get higher.
In 2011, they are very familiar with the variety of issues caused by our macro-level dependence on fossil fuels and the time for focus on renewable energy is now. By implementing sustainable, clean renewable energy in smart and cost-effective ways, they can all win.
Benefits of Wind Technology
The BTI turbine technology takes advantage of the natural force of wind as it interacts with a building. When the wind accelerates up the side of a building and reaches the edge of the rooftop it creates a vortex that perfectly aligns with the BT turbines’ horizontal axis for maximum efficiency. Its’ innovative and patented design leads to an affordable solution that has many competitive advantages and is effective at creating clean, renewable on-site power.
Wind is a premier renewable energy source with zero emissions
Wind energy can help alleviate a stressed and antiquated grid system
Wind energy can also help reduce over-all dependence on fossil fuels and foreign oil
Allows customer to realize corporate responsibility to environment and save bottom-line dollars
Generate electricity even at moderately low (8+ Mph) wind speeds
Federal, state, and city rebates currently exist to reduce capital costs
Produces power on-site (where it is needed) – avoids costly transmission and associated power loss – helps reduce demand on stressed grid system (and offset coal-related emissions)
Creates power 24/ 7 with sufficient minimal wind speeds (night or day, sun or clouds)
Multiple electrical configuration possibilities exist to maximize flexibility
No storage via batteries (generate and consume directly in building)
Storage via batteries with ‘smart meter’ technology to directly offset peak usage times and achieve maximum savings
Wind energy can improve the energy impact of any building it can be mounted on
Wind energy is complimentary to solar thus creating potential cost optimizing synergy (shared ‘system’)
Distributed Generation
The BT team also believes strongly in the DG model where the power is generated (via a clean and renewable source) on-site for direct consumption by the building. This model is called ‘DG’ and turns the ‘centralized’ power production model upside down and says – make the power WHERE it will be used.
Currently in the United States, up to 55% of every kilowatt produced is LOST in transmission. The degree of wasted time, energy, effort and money due to this issue is simply staggering.
They believe that the DG model has enormous potential to positively impact today’s energy demand. There are enough commercial rooftops that can be used to make power from renewable sources and efficiently and effectively deliver that power directly to the building’s AC panel (and grid). With a growing ‘install base’ of commercial renewable energy systems in a ‘DG’ model, the macro-level demand for fossil fuels, and all of the associated problems and costs can be reduced.
BTI System Advantages
bldw
The uni-directional design rests on HVAC-style curbs and is mounted along the roof's edge next to the parapet wall. The turbine takes full advantage of what is called a "parapet vortex" which naturally occurs as wind accelerates up the side of a building and crests over the roof top edge. The axis of the turbine is centered in this vortex capturing maximum electrical power generation capability from the wind.
BT’s design has one awarded patent, two patents pending, and more on the way
The BTI turbine has an approx. 10’ x 27.5’ footprint and the system weighs approx 1,400 pounds as a complete system
Patented design captures maximum rotational wind from natural vortex created at roof top edge
Horizontal axis design is more effective when mounting to building due to no mast or pole
Horizontal blades can be customized with full-color graphics and company logo (as well as the ‘augmenter’ that sits over the edge of the rooftop to guide the wind into the turbine)
Design allows for secure mounting on roof with minimal modification (no poles or costly roof modifications)
Well-suited for the urban environment (low profile, ease of installation, appealing design)
Low center of gravity with strong, robust square steel tubing (frame) design for rooftops which results in almost no vibration or noise
Installation can be accomplished without the use of expensive helicopters (easily assembling unit(s) on the roof top)
Scale-able design
Can add turbine units per available space on roof
All turbine units can share wiring and/or storage with each other
Turbines can be combined with solar (PV) cells and they can also share ‘system`
Building Turbines Product Information
bldwThe BTI turbine is designed for mounting onto flat commercial rooftops and its’ innovative and patented design is ideal for urban settings.
The turbine can help office buildings, schools, warehouses, distribution centers, airports, hotels, and a variety of other buildings offset electricity purchased from the grid by creating it on-site from the wind. The turbine creates reliable, cost-effective and clean renewable electricity with little building modification required.
Building Turbines' horizontal-axis wind turbines ("HAWT") easily mount onto commercial buildings and turn historically dead space into power producing real estate.
Turbine Design
The turbine frame is square steel tubing making it strong and lightweight, giving it a low profile and creating almost no noise or vibration. The turbine has a stainless steel axle rod down the middle of the turbine and it has six stainless steel, sealed bearings down the 27+ foot length. The ‘load’ factor on these bearing is virtually non-existent due to the horizontal-axis design and this helps keeps the maintenance requirement very low.
The BTI turbine design possesses exemplary and robust structural, mechanical and electrical characteristics that are particularly important when mounting a renewable energy system onto a building's roof. The turbine has a permanent magnet generator (PMG) that generates electricity when the turbine spins. The power is routed from the alternator to the inverter where it is inverted into AC power. The grid-tie inverter has the necessary protection circuitry for grid interconnection and converts the power to the proper uniformity in alternating current for consumption by the building at its main AC panel. Each kW consumed by the building's AC panel that was provided by clean, renewable, GHG-emissions-free wind turbines on the building's roof directly offsets a kW that would have been purchased from the grid.
Basic Electrical Design
bldw
System Definition
bldw
The BTI renewable energy rooftop turbine comes as a packaged and complete solution. The turbine has a generator mounted on it that is connected to the main axle rod via two sprockets and an industrial stainless steel chain.
From the generator, the signal path goes through the necessary overload protection circuitry, through the required cut-off switches (per code) and then into an inverter.
The inverter performs the function of getting the power into AC (alternating current) output that is ready for ‘consumption’ by the building as it is connected to the building’s main AC panel. From the main AC panel, the power supplied by the turbine(s) can be used anywhere within the building’s electrical system.
The turbine system as described above can be a single turbine solution or a it can consist of multiple turbines. The total solution could also be potentially complimented by a rooftop solar system. These two renewable energy systems can share installation costs and share rooftop space to provide a dual-sourced solution
