Building Turbines, Inc. (BTI) offers a unique, patented wind turbine product that can bring the dream of clean, affordable wind energy to a reality. The turbine is mounted on a strong steel frame, it has a low profile, low maintenance needs, and creates almost no noise or vibration. The BTI design possesses these exemplary and robust structural, mechanical and electrical characteristics that are particularly important when mounting a renewable energy system onto a building's roof.

BTI is an Austin, Texas based development stage renewable energy corporation focusing on designing and manufacturing revolutionary rooftop mounted wind turbines. The innovative and patented BTI’s design is ideal for commercial applications and creates reliable, cost-effective, clean and on-site renewable electricity.

BTI’s horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWT) easily mount onto commercial buildings with flat roofs. The uni-directional design rests on HVAC-style curbs and is mounted along the roof’s edge next to the parapet wall. The turbine takes full advantage of what is called a ‘parapet vortex’ which naturally occurs as wind accelerates up the side of a building and crests over the roof top edge. The turbine’s axle rod is centered in this vortex capturing maximum electrical power generation capability from the wind.

Building Turbines, Inc. is a publicly traded company (Stock Symbol: BLDW).

Building Turbines Company History
bldwAs a commercial office building owner, Mr. John F. Graham Sr. began to realize the need for an effective renewable energy solution to help offset his demanding energy bill. Mr. Graham felt the wind’s potential when he was on his building’s roof. He decided to personally pursue the development of a viable rooftop mounted wind turbine.

Taking advantage of the fact that he owns the building, Mr. Graham began developing smaller models of the horizontal-axis wind turbine for mounting onto his building’s roof. At one point, with the second floor entirely vacant, Mr. Graham created his own wind tunnel using HVAC blowers to test the theories and models. John’s mission is to create the world’s first HAWT (horizontal-axis wind turbine) for rooftop mounting so that he could help make the world a better place through the robust and reliable creation of ‘distributed’ electric power from Mother Nature’s clean and renewable source – the wind.

Rooftop wind turbines can convert under-utilized rooftop space into "distributed generation" (DG) power sites. Most building rooftops can support multiple wind turbines that can share a single grid-tie to the building. The sheer magnitude of the available rooftop space throughout the USA combined with the wide-scale deployment potential of rooftop wind turbine generators can make a meaningful contribution to meeting the current renewable energy goals of many corporations, municipalities, states and federal departments and agencies.

Today, Building Turbines is a publicly traded company with a cross-functional team of building construction and energy experienced business leaders. With momentum occurring on all fronts, the BTI team is committed to forging a sustainable renewable energy solution provider business model. BTI will manage a lean organization of carefully chosen outsource partners to ensure a customer-centric and effective over-all solution from manufacturing to installation exists across the USA.

The Next Phase in Renewable Energy
Affordable rooftop wind power is now available for your building. Today, wind energy is used to generate electricity that powers millions of American homes and businesses. Wind power is also widely recognized as one of most desirable and fastest-growing sources of clean and renewable energy. Until now however, the growth of wind power that they truly need to meet their growing energy demands has been limited by the cost prohibitive nature of current solutions.

The team at Building Turbines realized the need for a reliable rooftop wind turbine that effectively dealt with the structural and mechanical issues and provided the customer a unique, innovative, and compelling way to make clean renewable power on-site. They recognize America’s need to move forward with deployment of wind energy solutions that help them all reduce their dependency on fossil fuels and preserve the environment.

Building Turbines Technology
bldw Famous Quote: “We do not inherit the earth from our parents, we borrow it from our children.”
The team at Building Turbines believes in a multi-faceted approach to meeting today’s demanding energy requirements. They also believe that renewable energy sources should play a prominent role.
The sun shines every day for all of them, free of charge and the wind blows for free as well. Non-renewable energy sources can cost a lot of money to find and move. They must take the fossil fuels from the ground and ship them long distances to places where they can be used.
Oil must be refined before it can be used. This is expensive. They also have to pay to clean up the pollution they cause. Economically speaking as coal and oil supplies get used up, their prices get higher.
In 2011, they are very familiar with the variety of issues caused by our macro-level dependence on fossil fuels and the time for focus on renewable energy is now. By implementing sustainable, clean renewable energy in smart and cost-effective ways, they can all win.

Benefits of Wind Technology
The BTI turbine technology takes advantage of the natural force of wind as it interacts with a building. When the wind accelerates up the side of a building and reaches the edge of the rooftop it creates a vortex that perfectly aligns with the BT turbines’ horizontal axis for maximum efficiency. Its’ innovative and patented design leads to an affordable solution that has many competitive advantages and is effective at creating clean, renewable on-site power.
Wind is a premier renewable energy source with zero emissions
Wind energy can help alleviate a stressed and antiquated grid system
Wind energy can also help reduce over-all dependence on fossil fuels and foreign oil
Allows customer to realize corporate responsibility to environment and save bottom-line dollars
Generate electricity even at moderately low (8+ Mph) wind speeds
Federal, state, and city rebates currently exist to reduce capital costs
Produces power on-site (where it is needed) – avoids costly transmission and associated power loss – helps reduce demand on stressed grid system (and offset coal-related emissions)
Creates power 24/ 7 with sufficient minimal wind speeds (night or day, sun or clouds)
Multiple electrical configuration possibilities exist to maximize flexibility
No storage via batteries (generate and consume directly in building)
Storage via batteries with ‘smart meter’ technology to directly offset peak usage times and achieve maximum savings
Wind energy can improve the energy impact of any building it can be mounted on
Wind energy is complimentary to solar thus creating potential cost optimizing synergy (shared ‘system’)

Distributed Generation
The BT team also believes strongly in the DG model where the power is generated (via a clean and renewable source) on-site for direct consumption by the building. This model is called ‘DG’ and turns the ‘centralized’ power production model upside down and says – make the power WHERE it will be used.
Currently in the United States, up to 55% of every kilowatt produced is LOST in transmission. The degree of wasted time, energy, effort and money due to this issue is simply staggering.
They believe that the DG model has enormous potential to positively impact today’s energy demand. There are enough commercial rooftops that can be used to make power from renewable sources and efficiently and effectively deliver that power directly to the building’s AC panel (and grid). With a growing ‘install base’ of commercial renewable energy systems in a ‘DG’ model, the macro-level demand for fossil fuels, and all of the associated problems and costs can be reduced.

BTI System Advantages

Building Turbines Product Information
bldwThe BTI turbine is designed for mounting onto flat commercial rooftops and its’ innovative and patented design is ideal for urban settings.
The turbine can help office buildings, schools, warehouses, distribution centers, airports, hotels, and a variety of other buildings offset electricity purchased from the grid by creating it on-site from the wind. The turbine creates reliable, cost-effective and clean renewable electricity with little building modification required.

Building Turbines' horizontal-axis wind turbines ("HAWT") easily mount onto commercial buildings and turn historically dead space into power producing real estate. The uni-directional design rests on HVAC-style curbs and is mounted along the roof's edge next to the parapet wall.

The turbine takes full advantage of what is called a "parapet vortex" which naturally occurs as wind accelerates up the side of a building and crests over the roof top edge. The axis of the turbine is centered in this vortex capturing maximum electrical power generation capability from the wind.

Turbine Design
The turbine frame is square steel tubing making it strong and lightweight, giving it a low profile and creating almost no noise or vibration. The turbine has a stainless steel axle rod down the middle of the turbine and it has six stainless steel, sealed bearings down the 27+ foot length. The ‘load’ factor on these bearing is virtually non-existent due to the horizontal-axis design and this helps keeps the maintenance requirement very low.

The BTI turbine design possesses exemplary and robust structural, mechanical and electrical characteristics that are particularly important when mounting a renewable energy system onto a building's roof. The turbine has a permanent magnet generator (PMG) that generates electricity when the turbine spins. The power is routed from the alternator to the inverter where it is inverted into AC power. The grid-tie inverter has the necessary protection circuitry for grid interconnection and converts the power to the proper uniformity in alternating current for consumption by the building at its main AC panel. Each kW consumed by the building's AC panel that was provided by clean, renewable, GHG-emissions-free wind turbines on the building's roof directly offsets a kW that would have been purchased from the grid.

Basic Electrical Design

System Definition
bldw
The BTI renewable energy rooftop turbine comes as a packaged and complete solution. The turbine has a generator mounted on it that is connected to the main axle rod via two sprockets and an industrial stainless steel chain.
From the generator, the signal path goes through the necessary overload protection circuitry, through the required cut-off switches (per code) and then into an inverter.

The inverter performs the function of getting the power into AC (alternating current) output that is ready for ‘consumption’ by the building as it is connected to the building’s main AC panel. From the main AC panel, the power supplied by the turbine(s) can be used anywhere within the building’s electrical system.

The turbine system as described above can be a single turbine solution or a it can consist of multiple turbines. The total solution could also be potentially complimented by a rooftop solar system. These two renewable energy systems can share installation costs and share rooftop space to provide a dual-sourced solution
