‘They’re in there firing everyone’: VB board game cafe lays off all employees without notice
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — They laid off everybody at once, even the manager. The now former employees of a Virginia Beach board game business are calling it an unprofessional move.
It started as a locally-owned business called Roll With It Board Game Cafe in 2021. They later sold to a Canadian-based chain of board game cafes, Snakes and Lattes. They have locations throughout Ontario and parts of the U.S.
The former manager, Gabrielle Madurski, reached out to 10 On Your Side. She told our team about the many disputes over things like pay, and how the cafe should be run. Madurski also pointed out potential health code concerns and a lack of effective communication with the new owners — none of whom were based in Virginia.
“The location started to lose money,” Madurski said. “It got worse when the general manager left and we were kind of left to the wayside without a lot of communication, without a lot of help. We just kind of held it together the best we could.”
Madurski was later promoted to the manager position, describing an uphill battle when asking to jump from a lower end hourly rate to being salaried.
“[I] asked if they could get it in writing,” Madurski recalled. “She said that’s not something that they typically do. But she’d write something up for me. Never happened.”
It all came to a head on Monday, when Snakes and Lattes laid off everyone at the Virginia Beach location without notice.
“One of my co-workers got here before I did, it was as we were about to open at 4.” Madurski recalled. “One of my co-workers stopped me and asked if I was going in. I said of course, why wouldn’t I. And I was told, they’re in there firing everyone.”
Our news team reached out to Susan Lawver, Director of Operations USA for Snakes and Lattes. She confirmed the sudden layoffs. In a statement, she called it a difficult decision, and said the need for improvements at their Virginia Beach location necessitated a change.
“We understand the concerns raised by our former staff members, patrons and the wider community,” Lawver said. “Our commitment to the Virginia Beach community remains steadfast, and we are eager to introduce the improvements we’re making, which we believe will significantly enhance the guest experience.”
Lawver can be seen making posts on a forum for the official company website, saying, “I made the choice not to let the team know,” stating it was over fears of potential retaliation.
She described laying off all employees at a Snakes and Lattes location in Provo, Utah.
Lawver wrote, “That did not go well for us. Assets went missing and on any given day, random people wouldn’t show up or even call out. But the biggest reason we didn’t let the team know ahead of time this was coming was out of safety for our guests. Our guests safety when it comes to food protocols can not be compromised. And while I’m not accusing the Virginia team of potentially doing anything that would compromise our guests experience, after arriving in Provo and seeing the state of the kitchen when a team gets a heads up about a location closing, I made the choice not to let the team know.”
She added in her posts, she felt they were “not able to make the changes this location needs to thrive with the current team.” She compared the interior to that of a bakery fast-food restaurant chain.
Lawver told 10 On Your Side a total of six employees were simultaneously laid off without notice. Madurski told us a total of nine employees were laid off, including those who were out on medical leave. She said they were still employees of the cafe during the layoffs.
Madurski said the employees were all told to not re-apply to their old jobs. She believes many of the regulars will not be returning after the cafe re-opens.
“We wanted them to feel safe, we wanted them to have a good time and make true genuine connections,” Madurski said.
They are temporarily closed until mid-March. Official social media posts from the company said the closure is for renovations and do not mention the layoffs.

Nice, TV and print coverage. Great exposure to "build the brand".
"Hi everyone,
My name is Jim and I want to ask you for some help.
In February of 2024, after having bought the Roll With It Café in Virginia Beach Virginia almost a year ago, the company Snakes&Lattes "closed for remodeling".
The closure brought the news that they were firing all of their employees! With No Notice! Employees who have been praised in almost every review for their hospitality, knowledge of games and helpfulness for the guests were suddenly cast aside by the company.
They were given no notice and nothing in the way of severance, just their last paychecks. And while yea, that's legal in the USA we don't believe its right.
We started this GoFundMe to try and help them out.
Everything we raise here is going to help out the nine employees that lost their jobs. With people living paycheck to paycheck this kind of even can be devastating.
We're in contact with people from the staff to make sure they get every penny that we raise! So please if you can contribute, and share this with family and friends.
Help us prove that the gaming community is a strong community."

Who wants to steppe upppp and make the case that realtor Nasty Susan is a good business manager? Ploughed? Juan? Marty? Russ?
if SnL somehow does reopen VA Beach, I will be unsurpised if the ex-employees and gaming community picket the joynt. And I would be even more unsurprised if the fired employees collectively explore their legal claims, including butt nott limited to wrongful termination, with employment law counsel.
Virginia Beach board game cafe abruptly closes and lays off all employees, sparking backlash
A Virginia Beach board game cafe near Lynnhaven Mall plans to reopen after a remodel without its original team of employees, the company confirmed.
Snakes & Lattes laid off all nine of its employees on Feb. 26 without any warning or severance pay, said Gabrielle Madurski, the former general manager. Employees showed up for their shifts only to learn they were let go, she added.
Susan Lawver, U.S. director of operations for Snakes & Lattes, said in an email that the decision to lay off the employees was made after considerable deliberation, driven by the need for significant improvements to the operations.
“We recognize, however, that no matter the rationale, the process and communication could have been handled with more care and sensitivity,” she said.
In March 2023, the Canadian-based chain acquired the business at 869 Lynnhaven Parkway that previously operated as the independently owned Roll With It Board Game Cafe and Bar. Snakes & Lattes has three other U.S. locations, including two in Arizona and one in Chicago, Illinois. The Hampton Roads location hosts an extensive collection of more than 600 board games for gamers of all ages and skill levels.
Madurski came on board with the business as a server when it opened in the fall of 2021. When Snakes & Lattes bought the business, she said the staff was left to their own devices and told to keep business as usual — with little to no direction provided by the new owners.
An espresso machine was brought in to the establishment last July but never set up, she said. Employees — eager to hold true to the company name and make lattes — were cautioned to leave it in the box.
As the gaming community learned about the sudden closure and layoffs, comments, questions and concerns poured in on Snakes & Lattes’ online community forum.
Lawver responded in the forum and mentioned the closing of a location in Provo, Utah, and lessons learned regarding how staff reacted. She justified not giving notice to the Virginia Beach employees for fear of theft, vandalism or compromising food protocols.
“It’s pretty insulting,” Madurski said. “And I think it kind of shows how out of touch they were with our location.”<
The employees put their hearts and souls into the business and the comments do not honor the community they built, Madurski said.
Josh McDougle, also an inaugural employee and avid gamer, took on various responsibilities as time went on, including writing all of the questions for and running trivia night, which ended in December. Now, he is out of a job and said he is struggling to make ends meet.
“A community of gamers have lost a place they could relax and enjoy themselves, and nine former employees just happen to be among them,” McDougle said.
The business shared on its website that it’s temporarily closed for remodeling. Lawver said on the online forum that it planned to reopen with a new and improved menu, adding espressos and lattes, and with a new team that will be trained the “snakes way” as far as hospitality goes.
Originally, the business said in the online forum it would reopen on March 16, but
“We are eager to introduce the improvements we’re making, which we believe will significantly enhance the guest experience,” Lawver said, expressing a steadfast commitment to the Virginia Beach community.
Virginia Beach residents Sandy and Jeremy Zimmerman were regulars at the business for the past few years and developed many close friends through game nights. After learning how the staff was treated, she said they do not intend to patronize the business again.
“Every single one of my friends feels the exact same way,” she said. “It is abundantly clear that Snakes & Lattes prioritizes profit margins over the well-being of its employees, callously discarding them like disposable commodities.”
In response to the layoffs, the gaming community started a Facebook group, Get Snakes & Lattes out of VB, and started a GoFundMe campaign, co-organized by Madurski. Madurski said she will make sure the funds go to all eight of the employees, rather than herself.
Meanwhile, Lawver said the company is dedicated to learning from the experience as it moves forward.
“We are committed to improving our communication and to making decisions in a manner that respects and honors the contributions of every member of our team,” she said.
But Lawver said in the online forum, citing the Hampton Roads location’s performance, that the company will not rehire the laid off employees and is seeking a new staff.

Yeah....the "cherry picked" reference to the VWAP was the highest it has been in weeks. That was why I said it was a good day for Turdsville.
What about today? Cherry picking as usual?
Good day for Turdsville: Volume = 215,440; VWAP = $ 0.003072; Dollar Volume = $ 662;
Where is dealer fool and his terrible buy calls?
Seems to have disappeared after another solid round of arrogance and more poor judgment and worthless advice.
What maddening hypocrisy - no complimentary meal for workers butt Miss Management, who is paid an order of magnitude than the cafe workers, feels free to pilfer from the cafe''s food inventory herself.

"Let them eat cake (on their own dime), butt all the house Oreos are mine!"
I should have said that it doesn't apply to the moo moo crowd, although Ben may wear a rope. We would never know because the location of his former waist is a mystery.
.
As people have to tighten their belts, such 'luxuries and conveniences' start taking a back seat in the budget. Inflation is a mean tax and very likely to further hurt SnL.
ex-staff - it is a typo.
Wait, did they mass fire the e-staff too? I'm out-of-the-loop on this.
SnL is the game cafe equivalent of a slumlord. I would be unsurprised if the mass-fired employees show up on the "grand reopening" and exercise their First Amendent rights with posters, signs, handbills and even stand picket to inform passersby what happened and how SnL treated them.
The collective fired e-staff might also want to have a free consultation as a group with an employment law counsel to tell their story and see if they have claims.
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic bringing up trivia, because from looking at the VB location and comments, they had a successful trivia night there that stopped in December because Susan wouldn't pay the trivia host more.
Aaaaaand sending a saw and ordering cafe employees to cut into a wall is problematic for many reasons:
1 Most commercial leases do nott allow tenants to make structural modifications such as cutting into walls even if only drywall and nott studs without the landord's pre-approval.
2. Structural modifications done by unbonded non-professonals who are unfamiliar with the local building codes may violate the landord's building insurance policy.
3. It is nott a cafe employee's job to do construction work. If the firing was done even PART:LY because of staff failure to cut into a wall then they very well may have a wrongful termination claim.
I think Susan has done a great job. she knows what works and what doesnt' from other locations. like trivia nights
Was the decision to lay off the Virginia Beach staff really 100% Susan's idea like she claims it is in the Members Only club? If so, it should 100% fall on her.
But hell, I'll join the chorus that Ben and Roger should step down too. They keep taking (seemingly successful) cafes and running them into the ground. Glendale, Provo, now this? Surely they were making money when they were bought, or else why buy them in the first place?
I work in Virginia Beach, I'll have to stop by for lunch or something after they 'reopen'
Ben just strings people along with nothing burgers and hollow carrots. Nothing has improved here, in fact, it’s worse than ever.
Bird says news next week after this week think I had enough zero trades
NO TRADES - common shares are literally priceless< - even with the Ask below Thursday's close the sellers were unable to even move a single share of this turd.
I'm nott a FaceBooker, butt I wood bee unsurprised if those irate former employees and former customers/members share that information on other SnL locations FaceBook pages to give employees and customers/members at those other locations an idea of the company they are working for/patonizing and its employment practices.
i also would be unsurprised if employees at other SnL locations take as a lesson that they too may have their jobs taken from them with zero notice and thus take pre-emptive self-help measures to compensate. Especially those in troubled locations like Chicago and Tucson.
HELP WANTED: Game Gurru - must know rules for several hunnert board games and be able to rewire a commercial breaker box and install recessed commercial ceiling lighting. Some carpentry work involved so must have own tools (a saw can be provided). No experience required as work does not need to be up to code. No benefits and no free meals but free coffee if you bring your own grounds (water and brew setup provided) - 10% employee discount on cup rental and sugar and cream fees. Pooled tips distributed at company discretion and per company accounting.
Plumbing, painting carpentry, electrical, and HVAC experience a plus. Must be able to start immediately.
So just like Guelph. But now with the addition of being free of the old customer base and goodwill in the hipster/gamer community. And cancelled memberships.
Solid plan.
Could possibly work if they add live comedy entertainment.
