Airspan Announces Interoperability Testing Center
Expanding End User Selection of WiMAX Devices
04/02 11:16 AM
BOCA RATON, FL -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 04/02/09 -- Airspan Networks Inc. (AIRN:$0.0949,$0.0249,35.57%) , a leading provider of broadband wireless access networks, announced today the creation of its Interoperability Testing (IOT) Center for Mobile WiMAX(TM). The center, located at the Company's over-the-air demonstration facility in the United Kingdom, will conduct IOT testing on an end-to-end Airspan WiMAX infrastructure in a lab environment.
Several companies have already received the IOT stamp of approval from Airspan, including Intel, Sequans, Fujitsu, USI and Gemtek. This affords operators the assurance that devices supported by these prominent silicon developers and manufactured by these Original Design Manufacturers will deliver on the open ecosystem promise of the WiMAX Forum and its member companies.
The IOT lab will test user devices from other manufacturers to certify seamless operability on an Airspan mobile WiMAX infrastructure network. WiMAX standards and profiles have been created by the WiMAX Forum(TM), to ensure an open ecosystem in which user devices from multiple manufacturers can operate seamlessly on the WiMAX infrastructure of another manufacturer. This initiative ensures that users have a larger choice of end user products, including USB dongles, PC cards, WiMAX enabled notebooks, handsets and other mobile Internet devices.
Airspan will be testing customer premises equipment (CPE) from leading manufacturers to facilitate a rapid adoption of devices into customer networks. The testing will be performed over a range of frequency bands from 2.x-3.x GHz.
Additionally the Center is conducting IOT with a range of core network vendors and has already successfully concluded interoperability with Starent, Bridgewater Systems, Hitachi and others.
"Airspan is substantiating the importance of interoperability between user devices, core networking equipment and infrastructure. All key WiMAX vendors will have to ensure user product interoperability in order to succeed in the WiMAX arena," stated Amit Ancikovsky, Airspan President, Sales and Products. "We must all work together to bolster worldwide WiMAX growth and adoption. I invite vendors to join in this initiative and include their products amongst the Airspan IOT tested and approved catalog."
Airspan will continue IOT testing in the lab, as well as continue to develop state-of-the-art user devices such as its MiMAX USB, the world's only quad-band WiMAX USB dongle.

Airspan Selected for WiMAX Network in Okinawa, Japan
Serving Residents With High-Speed Internet Access
BOCA RATON, FL, Dec 30, 2008 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX) -- Airspan Networks, Inc.
(AIRN), a leading provider of WiMAX-based broadband wireless access networks,
announced today that Okinawa Telemessage Co. Ltd., a leading broadband access
service provider in Okinawa, Japan, launched a WiMAX Network using Airspan
solutions with plans to address the fast-growing demand for high-quality
broadband services.
Beginning with Nanjo City, Okinawa Telemessage will provide more than 500,000
households in Okinawa Prefecture with high-speed broadband access. Operating in
the 4.95 GHz frequency band, the WiMAX network deployment is well underway and,
upon completion, will consist of more than two hundred Airspan base stations
spread over Okinawa Island. The Airspan WiMAX system was selected by Okinawa
Telemessage for its flexibility, frequency band availability and the inherent
cost-savings offered by wireless-based broadband infrastructure.
The network was launched in an official inauguration ceremony on December 25th in
the city hall of Nanjo City, Okinawa, Japan. Attending the ceremony were the
mayor of Nanjo City, many government officials and executives from both Okinawa
Telemessage and Airspan Networks.
This project benefitted from Japan's government broadband policy. The
government's 'u-Japan' broadband strategy provides for money or tax incentives to
cities to deploy broadband with the hopes of completing full broadband coverage
to the entire nation by 2010. Nanjo City provided Okinawa Telemessage with
roof-top property for placement of base stations, as well as city-owned fiber
optic backhauling.
"A robust and reliable infrastructure solution is needed in an island-wide
deployment such as this. Airspan solutions have exceeded our expectations and
will help us meet our goals in expanding broadband services to the entire Okinawa
Prefecture," stated Fumikatu Miyagi, President and CEO of Okinawa Telemessage Co.
"As we expand our presence in Asia Pacific, we welcome this opportunity in
Okinawa," said Henrik Smith-Petersen, Airspan's President of Asia Pacific. "Our
WiMAX solutions provide top-quality data services and we are happy to play a part
in bringing broadband to the residents of the island."
About Okinawa Telemessage, Co. Ltd

"We continue to be optimistic about the WiMAX market and Airspan's leading position despite a tough quarter," commented Eric Stonestrom, Airspan's president and chief executive officer. "We are operating in a challenging environment where carriers are in a decision making process surrounding Mobile WiMAX. That said, WiMAX deployment in the developing world continues, where we recorded strong performance delivering equipment to fulfill the DSL experience for the underserved population. Our more challenging market was in Western Europe, as several operators delayed decisions.
"One of the major highlights of the quarter was our recent selection for a national mobile project in Japan. We formalized a partnership for joint product development with Fujitsu, who announced earlier this year that they had been selected as a WiMAX supplier by KDDI in its UQ Communications project. This win validates our product relevance in a very sophisticated market and we believe this type of next generation WIMAX base station is exactly what carriers deploying national roll-outs will need. Benefits of the platform include what we believe are the lowest operational cost and smallest footprint in the industry.
"We have ended the first quarter 2008 with a strong balance sheet and improved cash performance, with net cash used during the quarter at $2.7 million. Nevertheless, we are implementing a difficult but necessary cost and headcount reduction program to improve our results in the coming quarters, targeting 15% operating cost reduction by the end of the third quarter. We will continue to actively work to move the company towards operational profitability," Mr. Stonestrom continued.
First Quarter Financial highlights
Total first quarter revenues decreased by 36% to $17.2 million compared to $26.7 million in the first quarter of 2007, largely driven by the continuing decline in non-WiMAX business. Gross margin was 31%. Total operating expenses for the first quarter of 2008 were $15.6 million, a 14% increase over the same period last year. This increase in operating expenses has resulted mainly from an increase in R&D spending as investment continues in mobile WiMAX technology and products, and an increase in sales and marketing, due, in part, to industry trade show expenses during the quarter.
The geographic breakdown of revenue for the quarter was as follows: 24% from Latin America and the Caribbean; 20% from Europe; 30% from Africa and the Middle East; 12% from Asia; and 14% from North America.
Cash, cash equivalents, short-term investments and restricted cash amounted to $34.0 million compared to 36.7 million at December 31, 2007, resulting in cash usage for the quarter of $2.7 million.
"We are committed to two primary objectives: Growing our revenues and, at the same time, reducing our costs to move the company towards profitability," commented David Brant, Airspan's chief financial officer.
Outlook
We continue to be cautiously optimistic for the year and believe the underserved market opportunities are large. In addition, we have intensified our focus on mobile network deployments with our strong product line up and expect that these new products will contribute revenues in the second half of 2008. We foresee revenues increasing in the second quarter 2008 to approximately $21 million.

SOGETEL Communications and mmwave Technologies Deploy Airspan WiMAX Network in Canada
Monday June 5, 6:32 pm ET
BOCA RATON, FL--(MARKET WIRE)--Jun 5, 2006 -- Airspan Networks, Inc. (NasdaqNM:AIRN - News), a leading world-wide provider of WiMAX-based broadband wireless access networks and carrier class Voice over Internet Protocols (VoIP) and Wi-Fi Hotzone systems, announced today that mmwave Technologies, an Airspan System Integrator, and SOGETEL have successfully deployed Airspan's AS.MAX WiMAX products in Central Quebec, Canada.
SOGETEL is an independent telecommunications firm with more than 100 years of experience. It currently operates more than 25,500 telephone access lines for business and residential users in Quebec, covering a territory of 4,300 square kilometers. SOGETEL will deploy Airspan's MicroMAX-SOC base stations and EasyST and ProST customer premise devices in 28 communities over a five month period. The network, which includes approximately $750,000 of Airspan equipment, will enable SOGETEL to offer broadband Internet access primarily to rural residential subscribers where traditional wired broadband technologies are not financially viable.
mmwave Technologies, based in Mississauga, Ontario, recommended Airspan's AS.MAX system to SOGETEL for several important reasons. "At mmwave, we select only best of breed technologies that match our customers' requirements. We recommend the Airspan AS.MAX system because of its strong technical performance and its ability to generate a strong economic business model that allows operators to build and grow the network in a very manageable way," stated Glenn Poulos, President of mmwave Technologies.
"We are very pleased with the performance of the Airspan AS.MAX WiMAX solutions. They will enable us to offer the most advanced telecommunications features and services to our customer base. WiMAX technology provides us with the right mix of bandwidth and economics for our business to grow," stated Yves Duval, Director of Engineering, SOGETEL.
"Airspan is pleased to work with SOGETEL and mmwave on the first commercial deployment of the MicroMAX-SOC base station system," stated Dick Lee, Airspan's General Manager and Vice President North America. "We launched MicroMAX-SOC in March 2006, and we believe it has become the leading low-cost high-performance WiMAX base station in the industry. The product complements our other WiMAX base stations by being optimised for low-density deployment, particularly in rural areas where it is the most cost-effective solution to fill in coverage holes in DSL and cable networks, and for Wi-Fi backhaul, Enterprise solutions and Public Safety applications."
Airspan's AS.MAX platform incorporates:
-- MacroMAX -- An FDD-only fixed WiMAX conventional macro cell
-- HiperMAX (macro cell software upgradeable to mobile WiMAX next-
generation)
-- MicroMAX-SOC (low-cost, high-performance fixed WiMAX micro cell)
-- MicroMAX-SDR (micro cell software-upgradeable to mobile WiMAX)
-- Customer Premise Equipment, including the first WiMAX Forum-certified
indoor, self-installable CPE

Anyone here following This stock,AIRN?
Your thoughts are appriciated
I have been astonished that GlobeTel is presenting a contract which any one us of could present with the same honesty. Their contract does not begin until they receive a 150 mil advance payment. I could say I am going to sell my car to Ford Motor company for 100 million dollars when they make the first 25 million down payment. My car is worth 15,000 but that does not matter the statement I made above is absolutely true, I would definitely sell my car to ford if they make a 25 million down payment sometime in 2006. This is exactly the contract GTE has announced they have with Internafta.

I have been hearing that Ericsson might be in acquisition talks with Airspan. Can anybody confirm this?

New OEM Agreement(s) To Be Announced Soon!
Just my opinion, but we know from the last CC that these have been "in the works" for awhile and I suspect we will get at least one announcement in the next week or so.
Why? Because I believe that management will want to get the share price up prior to the closing of the deal with ArelNet.
Read Between The Lines!
I can't believe people can come away from this CC with anything except a VERY POSITIVE feeling about the future of Airspan. They can't talk specifics, but it is obvious that they are upbeat about the 2nd half of this year and beyond.
Look at 4Q sales in 2004 when Axtel rolled out four new cities and then consider the fact they they are now making plans for a rollout in TWENTY.
Eric says they are working on TWO or THREE quotes that would be the same size as Axtel and they can barely contain their excitement about the prospects for Wimax.
They are increasing R&D and their sales force. No talk about cutting expenses anymore ... it is all about sales growth at this point.
They didn't say anything about other OEM agreements that we know are being discussed.
They didn't mention AT&T or Sprint, but we already know they are testing Airspan equipment and that they are getting rave reviews about their new Wimax offerings.
Finally, when asked about their future sales goals, Eric said they intend to be THE LEADER in this space.
Jeez, folks, do they need to paint you a picture!

I really believe that the market will be unable to ignore our little Airspan any longer once news of the next OEM Agreement is announced ... hopefully by the end of this month.

Great news, but I think it is a little too far into the future to have a lasting impact on the current price. I still believe the announcement of the new OEM agreements is what will get the price moving back towards the $6 or $7 range.

AIRN - Airspan unveils WiMAX portfolio . .
HANOVER, Germany--(Business Wire)--Mar 09, 2005--
Airspan Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:AIRN.Q), a leading
provider of broadband wireless solutions, today unveiled the world's
first self-installable indoor WiMAX products that link Desktop PCs,
Laptops, Internet-ready telephone sets and other broadband devices
directly to operator networks. The AS.MAX family of WiMAX base
stations and end-user devices includes support for residential and
nomadic internet access, corporate data networks, and Voice-over-IP.
The AS.MAX portfolio was demonstrated at stand E09 in Hall 13 at CeBIT
and will be commercially available in the third quarter of 2005.
The AS.MAX family comprises two customer premises equipment (CPE)
devices: the EasyST and ProST. The EasyST, which uses Intel
Corporation's "Rosedale" wireless broadband system-on-chip, connects
IP-enabled devices directly to WiMAX networks and can be installed
indoors by end users within minutes without the need for costly
truck-roll deployments by the operators. Designed for the residential
and small enterprise markets, the device is also the world's first
integrated voice and data WiMAX product, supporting two voice lines
and an Ethernet connection. It can also act as an 802.11 Wi-Fi Access
Point. The ProST CPE will serve larger enterprises and is designed for
outdoor professional deployment. Both CPEs are designed to work on any
WiMAX-Certified(TM) base station.
The AS.MAX family also includes point-to-multipoint base stations
called HiperMAX, MacroMAX and MicroMAX, as well as an integrated
point-to-point backhaul solution, PrimeMAX. The Software Defined Radio
(SDR) in the base stations allows high-capacity AS.MAX base stations
to be upgraded from the fixed to the mobile WiMAX standard, thereby
enabling connections to laptops, PDAs and other portable devices
supported by the emerging IEEE 802.16e mobile WiMAX standard.
Eric Stonestrom, President and Chief Executive Officer of Airspan
Networks, said: "Broadband Wireless needsto be simple and affordable
for operators and end users. With this in mind, we have designed
AS.MAX as the most robust product family on the market. AS.MAX
supports converged video, voice and data services on a single
platform, which will make it very attractive to operators wishing to
bundle multi-media service offerings to their end-customers. We have
also introduced a broad range of products and devices to fit different
network price points and densities, permitting low start-up capital
expenditures for our customers which is an essential part of the
offering. In addition, we will address the cellular backhaul market
for the first time."
"Airspan's Easy ST is on track to begin to deliver the promise of
WiMAX this year for residential and small business customers," said
Scott Richardson, general manager of Intel's Broadband Wireless
Division. "Broadband access is currently only available to a fraction
of computer users, but WiMAX solutions will help bring high-speed
wireless to the next generation of computer users."
Paul Senior, Vice President, Marketing and Product Management at
Airspan, said: "The AS.MAX platform makes 'personal broadband' a
reality, and it will enable the delivery of services to devices, not
locations. We have built on our 12 years of wireless voice and
broadband experience to deliver class-leading, self-installable indoor
WiMAX equipment, and we expect these products to be WiMAX
Certified(TM) as soon as the WiMAX Forum opens its labs in July 2005."
Airspan will commence trials of AS.MAX products with service
providers in the second quarter of 2005, and expects commercial WiMAX
network rollouts to begin in the third quarter of the year.

'Coverage is king' for WiMAX: Intel
3 March, 2005
by Robert Dutt
SAN FRANCISCO -- The wide-area wireless networking technology known as WiMAX stands to be the next major innovation in wireless technology, and will likely become the most major enabler of on-the-go data to date because of its ability to cover areas the size of a city with a single antenna, according to Intel.
Sean Maloney, executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Mobility Group, spent a good part of his keynote at the company's Intel Developer Forum Spring 2005 here outlining the company's strategy for, and advocacy of, WiMAX. He said that WiMAX will bring to wireless data the lesson learned a long time ago by wireless voice carriers -- that "coverage is king."
"Coverage, in this case, is far more important than bandwidth," Maloney said. "WiFi is cool, but when you walk out of the hotspot, you lose coverage. We have to do better."
The urgency comes from the fact that more and more of all the processors and transistors that are being produced are being put into devices where mobility is a key feature. As Maloney puts it, one third of all the transistors that get manufactured "end up being carried around by somebody."
As that number continues to ramp up, and as the processors being delivered into mobile devices continue to gain power, the ability to bring in data while on-the-go will become absolutely key, and potentially be the biggest bottleneck that mobile devices face. "What you can do is deeply affected by how much bandwidth you have available," Maloney said.
But there are lessons to be learned from WiFi, in that it was developed as a global standard, which leads to mass production of parts, more competition, lower cost, and ultimately, WiFi everywhere -- a vast majority of notebooks now include WiFi by default, as do many other mobility-oriented devices, including cell phones. Bringing that kind of idea to WiMAX will be key to making it ramp up as quickly as WiFi did, Maloney said.
And that's starting to happen. Maloney said that a year ago, there were 46 WiMAX Forum members, and today it's it 244 members, with more and more wireless carriers on board.
"The consequence of that is that there is a significant increase in the number of engineers working on this -- we've gone from 500 to 5,000," he said. "We're expecting to see a steady rollout over the next year."
Similarly, last year, there were two pre-standard trials rolled out. Today, it's at 15 trials with wireless carriers. And by IDF 2006, Maloney said he hoped to see 75 total carrier trials or rollouts.

Barrett vows support for WiMax system
DPA , SAN FRANCISCO
Thursday, Mar 03, 2005,Page 12
Intel boss Craig Barrett on Tuesday said his company would put its muscle behind the new wireless broadband technology known as WiMax and predicted that the citywide systems would begin to appear by the end of the year.
"I think WiMax is going to be a disruptive technology that's going to change the way we think of mobile connectivity," including mobile phones, Barrett said at the opening of the Intel Developers Conference in San Francisco.
The technology is like the current wifi standard on steroids, capable of broadcasting high-speed data over areas as large 15km2 at speeds of 75 megabits per second (Mbps).
The hope is that introduction of the technology would overcome the problems in getting high-speed Internet to remote locations, and eventually overcome the need for laying new networks of fibre-optic line.
Barrett said that Intel's support for WiMax significantly boosted its chances.
"Hopefully, toward the end of 2005 or 2006 you're going to see massive commercial rollouts of this capability," Barrett said.
