Airspan Announces 4G Small Cell Base Station

Complementing 4G Product Portfolio With Performance and Cost-Optimized Micro Base Station
BOCA RATON, FL--(Marketwire - Aug 17, 2011) - Airspan Networks Inc., a leading provider of broadband wireless access networks, announced today the introduction of Air4Gs, a carrier-grade, compact 4G base station, offering a cost-optimized solution to operators and vertical markets such as smart grid.
Air4Gs is a small, light, powerful product that addresses connectivity needs of rural and low population density applications, as well as filling in coverage on the edge of an urban service area. Air4Gs can be easily integrated into existing Airspan supported networks by utilizing the same core network products, network management software and end user devices.
Similar in architecture to the flagship, macro Air4G base station, Air4Gs complements the current Airspan 4G product portfolio, matching the traffic demands of customer networks.
Air4Gs, weighing only 10 kg/23 lb, harnesses features such as advanced fractional frequency reuse and all-in-one/all-outdoor architecture, packed into a small 2 transmitter/2 receiver (2Tx/2Rx) platform. It has been designed to operate in standalone mode, requiring no ASN-Gateway and therefore allowing an extremely low-cost initial fixed deployment. The product is standards-based and communicates with a large variety of user devices.
"Air4Gs offers uncompromised performance with a unique combination of power and affordability," commented Amit Ancikovsky, President of Products and Sales for Airspan. "There are certain deployment scenarios that simply do not need the power of a macro base station but still need range and capacity. Air4Gs offers this at a moderate price point to help operators meet their business models. Our goal is to continue to develop products that enable our customers to deploy flexible solutions that maximize their efficiency and minimize their expenses."
The new product operates in the 1.4, 2.x, and 3.x GHz frequency bands and is FCC certified to operate in the full 50 MHz of the 3.65 band in the U.S. Incorporating its newest proprietary software enhancements to this solution, Airspan has created a lightweight, low power consumption base station which supports:
* Extended range (more than 50 km)
* Fractional Frequency Reuse (FFR), MIMO Matrix A and MIMO Matrix B
* 3.5, 5, 7 and 10 MHz channels
* Advanced VLAN networking capabilities
* Unique VoIP solution
* Advanced power amplifiers with digital pre-distortion technology to improve adjacent channel operation and frequency reuse
Air4Gs WiMAX variants have already been trialled and tested and are now available for purchase. An LTE version of the product is currently being developed.

Great potential here and I continue like some of the things I've been seeing from them, but Zimbabwe? Really? From their PR yesterday, not exactly the deal you want to be publicizing in PRs. Better that you keep that to yourself. Mugabe and crew aren't exactly the "in thing" for western investors right now, surprised by that announcement. Associating with dictatorial/autocratic regimes and PR'ing it, not smart. Of course, still doesn't change the potential here, but just bad form IMO.
We'll have to see, I am becoming increasingly convinced however that there is a larger plan that may be at work here, in which Airspan is only one of the players.
Intriguing words from Sprint's CTO, Stephen Bye.
http://www.telecoms.com/30916/wimax-the-long-goodbye/
Excellent DD!
This is definitely an interesting one. It is odd that they have done nothing with filings. I am on the fence as to whether they are hiding something that they don't want disclosed in a filing or they simply do not care.
They seem to have great things in the works and plenty of potential though there is very little interest in their stock.
Airspan has certainly changed there direction and appears that they have positioned themselves to fit in a specific role with LightSquared.
The LightSquared / Sprint deal is one I continue to watch.
One thing I did find interesting with the Airspan deal with Lightsquared last year was an apparent the LTE/WiMax disconnect.
This is Lightsquared:
Highest volume since reincorporation, looking for any bit of information to tell us what is happening next. Oak Investment Partners is the key outside player here to watch IMO based on it's involvement and funding of Airspan.
Market Cap: ~$1,000,000
Contract announcements in the tens of millions of dollars and the sole provider of smart grid services on upcoming Lightsquared network which just announced partnership with Sprint.
If they can get current with their filings and let us see behind the scenes after the reincorporation in Deleware this continues to have great potential.

Thanks for the consistent posts grease, much appreciated. Such a consistent set of PRs from company in last few months, hard to believe they won't bring it current at some point. When and if they do with the OS it has, tremendous mover potential. One of the few at these price levels that I could see having 1000+% gainer if all the cards fall in the right places.

By Jayashree Adkoli
An exponential growth in mobile data traffic coupled with a scarcity in global spectrum are forcing service providers and operators to push the limits on capacity and throughput. Consequently, demand for next-generation base stations that can support wider bandwidth, more signal channels and more protocols (2G/3G/4G) in each band has increased.
As a response, semiconductor solutions provider NetLogic Microsystems, Inc. has rolled-out the industry’s widest bandwidth Digital Front End (DFE) processors, the OP6100 family, for 3G and 4G/LTE (News - Alert) base stations.
The new OP6100 family of DFE processors can deliver 65MHz of occupied bandwidth, 145MHz of total bandwidth and 325MHz of pre-distortion bandwidth for next-generation 3G and 4G/LTE base stations.
NetLogic (News - Alert) Microsystems’ Intelligent Self-Adaptive DFE technology facilitates base stations to calibrate in real-time to real-world environments and variations. Consequently, this helps in accelerating as well as enhancing the manageability of LTE developments for Tier One original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
The new OP6100 family of DFE processors also feature remote radio heads (RRUs) and distributed antenna systems (DAS). In addition, the DFE technology incorporated allows the family to represent more than 220 percent increase in bandwidth over competing available merchant DFE solutions, and at a fraction of the cost and power of FPGA-based solutions.
Supporting multiple standards and multiple signals in the same wide bandwidth, the new OP6100 DFE processor family also supports non-contiguous bands.
NetLogic Microsystems’ (News - Alert) Intelligent Self-Adaptive DFE technology incorporated into the new OP6100 DFE processor family help it to deliver the industry’s widest signal bandwidth. It also provides the industry’s highest spectrum efficiency through the simultaneous processing of multiple signal channels per band, as well as the multi-protocol co-existence of 4G LTE, 3G and 2G standards.
The OP6100 DFE processor family’s ability to support multiple signals and multiple protocols in a significantly wider bandwidth spectrum along with the unique ability to span over non-contiguous bands helps service providers to upgrade the performance and functionality of existing base stations without the time and costs associated with deploying new base stations or antennas.
In addition, the OP6100 DFE processor family significantly improves the cost and power profiles of next-generation base stations by eliminating the need for costly FPGA devices and conventional DFE solutions.
Moreover, the OP6100 DFE processor family enables unprecedented scalability in DFE processing for OEMs across multiple platforms and base station form factors due to the support for broadest range of Doherty, Asymmetric Doherty and Envelope-Tracking power amplifiers in LDMOS, GaN and GaAs technologies.
Furthermore, the new OP6100 DFE processor family can provide up to 80 percent better transmit power efficiency over competing solutions. This feature facilitates OEMs to attain higher data rates at much lower transmit power levels.
In the recent news, NetLogic Microsystems has boosted Airspan's (News - Alert) 4G LTE base stations. In addition, the company has also tapped-out next-generation silicon in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (News - Alert) Company (TSMC)’s advanced 28nm process.

Big Money in Small Cells, or The Future Hangs by a Strand
http://lteworld.org/blog/big-money-small-cells-or-future-hangs-strand
By Maravedis - Posted on 07 April 2011
The recent CTIA exposition in Orlando demonstrated the industry-wide agreement that the only solution to the evolving wireless broadband capacity crunch is a heterogenous access network composed of macro cells, plus a range of small cell solutions: microcells and picocells, carrier WiFi, and the view of most participants, femtocells. Small-cell base stations, many of them strand-mounted for minimum-footprint deployment, were visible on stands all over the show, many from small companies with WiMAX and WiFi backgrounds. The new importance of small cells is likely to bring even more pressure to bear on the large Tier-1 OEMs, and alter the existing order of the industry and established supplier/operator relationships. ?
Today, operators rely on the established Tier-1 OEMs (Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia-Siemens Networks, Samsung, and ZTE) to supply and integrate their mobile networks. ?All the Tier-1 OEMs are positioning for the foreseen explosion in 4G small cell deployments, whether in the form of picocells, carrier femtocells, residential femtocells, or carrier WiFi. This sets up an industry dynamic that in the long term is likely to bring additional downward price pressure on all base station form factors, decreased differentiation at the level of base stations, and the appearance of new entrants in the base station and wireless network markets. ? ?
How is this likely to play out? The cost targets for femtocells (the figure of US$100 is often given as a bench mark for residential femtocells) means that some Tier-1 OEMs will be sourcing their femto base stations from third party suppliers who can meet these aggressive cost targets. NSN for example, displayed femto base stations from several small manufacturers at its stand at CTIA. Other Tier-1 OEMs with strength in consumer electronics (for example, Samsung and Huawei) will try to develop and market their own femto base stations. Either way, the strength of the femto solution relies on the capabilities of the chipset being used, and the value added by the Tier-1 OEMs consists of the degree of integration and support offered by the OEM's operations, administration and maintenance (OA&M) system and self-optimizing network (SON) capabilities. ? ?
Much the same phenomenon is taking place in the picocell market. Tier-1 vendors are developing and announcing their own picocell solutions, and heterogenous network solutions with centralized intelligence and processing, for example NSN's Liquidradio, Alcatel-Lucent's LightRadio, and Ericsson's Antenna Integrated Radio (AIR). At the same time, numerous new entrants are developing and promoting small cell solutions. From the WiMAX camp, companies like Juni (femtocell supplier to Clearwire and KT) and Airspan are bringing sophisticated LTE picocell solutions to market. From the carrier WiFi arena, BelAir Networks is positioning itself as a multi-standard small cell supplier. Many other small suppliers are overhanging the market, and were announcing and displaying picocell solutions at CTIA. Under relentless price pressure as the number of base stations required for broadband wireless balloons by factors of 10 or more compared to today's networks, it's likely that some of these new entrants will find a niche in the 4G market space, either as suppliers to the large OEM's or perhaps even as suppliers to some mobile carriers. ? ?
As the capabilities of the low-cost chipsets in the femto and pico base stations increases, following the relentless march of Moore's Law, chipset-based solutions are likely to begin to encroach on the capabilities of bigger base stations in terms of the number of subscribers they support, the sophistication of the MIMO configurations they support, and the channel bandwidths they can handle (including possibly channel aggregation). In the end the large OEMs, having developed distributed radio architectures to reduce costs to operators while keeping as much of the investment in their camp as possible, are very likely going to have to adopt the same chipset-based solutions as the smaller companies – for the small cell base stations and for their macro base stations as well. The net effect of the increasing reliance on chipset-based base stations will be reduced differentiation between suppliers, and increasing price competition with new entrants bringing additional competition to the market space. ?
The winners out of this dynamic are likely going to be the femto and pico base station silicon manufacturers, and very possibly the IT and networking vendors. Cisco in particular already has an extensive set of solutions in the IP core network (both in-house and acquired through their purchase of Starent), a dominant position in the WiFi space, and could easily source femtocell, picocell, and microcell solutions from smaller OEMs, either through ODM agreements or by outright acquisition. Moreover, operators are likely to have few objections to buying from Cisco – they already do for much of their networking gear. The established Tier-1 wireless vendors are going to have to be very good to integrate the emerging low-cost chipsets into their designs, maintain their differentiation, and keep up with small, hungry competitors with experience in low-cost form factors. The danger that major new vendors like Cisco could enter the space only makes their position more risky. Operators are likely to benefit from increased levels of competition as they expand the number of base stations in their networks by at least an order of magnitude. ? ?
In this evolving dynamic, the small-cell new entrants run the risk of becoming cannon fodder. They will drive prices down, possibly beyond sustainable levels as we saw in the WiMAX industry, in the hope of building sales and market share, with acquisition by one of the majors being the ultimate exit strategy. ?
In terms of the recently announced distributed radio architectures, Maravedis and others have already pointed out the issues with the massive amounts of fiber-based bandwidth required by Remote Radio Head (RRH) solutions. In an environment where the cost of the silicon to implement base band processing is dropping, while the processing power increases, solutions requiring large-scale recurring expenses in the form of fiber leasing costs are likely to become less attractive to operators, who may be more attracted to low cost and increasingly capable pico base station solutions.

For LightSquared No Network Is No Problem
http://gigaom.com/broadband/for-lightsquared-no-network-is-no-problem/
By Stacey Higginbotham Apr. 3, 2011, 9:00am PT
For a mobile operator without even a network or operational handset, LightSquared has struck a lot of deals and been associated with partners ranging from Time Warner Cable and Cablevision to Metro PCS. AT&T even mentioned it as a viable mobile broadband competitor in its conference call to discuss its plans to buy T-Mobile. Even the Kansas City ISP I spoke with earlier this week on Google Fiber is interested in LightSquare’s satellite network. So how did an underfunded company with contested spectrum, an FCC waiver and no terrestrial network manage to become such a force in the telecommunications industry?
LightSquared’s promise is huge. The idea of a competitive wholesale Long Term Evolution network was enough to get me away from my family on a Saturday night one year ago to write about its plans to cover the nation with fourth-generation wireless service. Sure, I had my doubts – mostly because building a combined satellite and terrestrial network is a daunting task that requires lots of money, help from regulators, a terrestrial partner and cool devices that could work on both networks — but I was eager to see something like this succeed.
At the time, I heard from sources inside Harbinger, the private equity firm backing LightSquared (using a different name in March 2010) about prospective deals and other tidbits. The point was to address some of my doubts about the network’s viability, but it also implied the value in LightSquared was mostly about the spectrum it held. Yet, many of these “imminent deals” never materialized, and my doubts about the quality of satellite phones still remains. LightSquared has shown people a prototype USB dongle from AnyData, according to industry analyst Tim Farrar, but no one knows if it will work on all LTE networks or with 3G networks.
The latest indication of LightSquared’s tenuous grasp of reality is its insistence that concerns of GPS interference, which have dogged the company since late last year, won’t halt its expansion plans. Perhaps those worries won’t, but what about LightSquared shutting down its efforts to build out tower networks in several U.S. cities? And Nokia Siemens Networks, which is supposedly building out the terrestrial infrastructure, has backed off a deal with LightSquared. My requests to talk to LightSquared have not been answered.
In terms of network availability, LightSquared is set to launch its first LTE markets in the third quarter of 2011, according to the documents it filed with the FCC a year ago, with up to nine markets expected to be active by the end of the year. On Friday, Light Reading quotes an executive at LightSquared saying those plans are still on track:
“Our launch is still on track. We’re looking for a launch by the end of the year certainly,” Jeff Carlisle, executive vice president for regulatory affairs and public policy at LightSquared, told Light Reading Mobile during a call Thursday.
I like the implied hedge in the statement. It doesn’t state the launch is still planned for the third quarter, instead saying it will certainly happen by the end of the year, which actually makes it late for the original plans. But who’s counting dates?
LightSquared says it’s in negotiations with 15 potential customers and has recently announced deals with Best Buy, smart grid provider Airspan Networks and Leap Wireless, which operates the Cricket pre-paid phone brand. That’s pretty good for a company with no network to speak of and no devices on the market. Yes, it has a deal to make sure Qualcomm builds dual-mode satellite and terrestrial chips and also recently got a waiver from the FCC which means it no longer has to make sure its customers use both the satellite and terrestrial network.
However, it still looks like LightSquared is building a castle made of sand:
* It’s fighting with the Pentagon and the multi-billion-dollar GPS industry over interference, and while it had made an offer to buy new spectrum to mitigate the risks of GPS interference, that action just shined more doubt on Harbinger’s bet on LightSquared.
* It doesn’t have devices, unless we count the poorly reviewed Genus phone offered by AT&T and TerreStar.
* It does have to have dual-mode chips available for its customers, but if it changes spectrum to avoid GPS interference, that will require a radio chip tweak that could cause delays in devices getting to market.
* It has until the third quarter (or end of year) in which to cover 9 million people and until 2012 to cover 100 million.
* It no longer appears to be working with Nokia Siemens Networks, although it is still active in building out networks in Denver, Baltimore/Washington D.C. and Las Vegas.
* Its best hope for a network build-out partner, T-Mobile, is set to be acquired by AT&T.
That castle seems to be built on the idea that LightSquared’s spectrum is worth more than the billions Harbinger has already put into it, or the $585 million it has raised in the debt markets. However, if AT&T takes T-Mobile off the market, then LightSquared has lost the most likely buyer of its spectrum. Analyst Farrar thinks LightSquared is desperately trying to pitch itself to Sprint, but Sprint has a lot of spectrum and the Clearwire partnership to worry about. Would it really get involved with LightSquared?
When asked about the idea of an acquisition on Monday during a conversation about the AT&T and T-Mobile merger, Charles McKee Sprint’s Vice President, Government Affairs, Federal and State Regulatory, said, “We don’t comment on speculation or rumor. Our primary focus will be on blocking this transaction and aggressively competing in the marketplace.” If Sprint doesn’t bite, that might leave LightSquared stuck completing the charade of building out a wholesale LTE network to cover 9 million people by the end of this year, after which, it can move on to becoming an awesome competitive force set to block the evils of a wireless duopoly controlled by Verizon and AT&T. No pressure.
With Help From eXtremeDB In-Memory Database System, Airspan Networks' Device Bridges Disparate Mobile Broadband Networks
ISSAQUAH, WASHINGTON March 29, 2011
http://www.prleap.com/pr/173921/
(PRLEAP.COM) McObject®, developer of the eXtremeDB® embedded database system product family, announced that Airspan Networks has integrated the eXtremeDB In-Memory Database System (IMDS) as a key software component within Airspan’s new Air4G mobile broadband network base station. eXtremeDB provides the fast data access needed to handle real-time voice and data traffic and contributes to one of Air4G’s key innovations: its simultaneous support for WiMAX and LTE, the two main wireless broadband standards.
eXtremeDB also delivered an important business advantage to Airspan by lowering Air4G’s production time and cost. First, eXtremeDB’s tiny code size (approximately 150K) and minimal CPU demands reduce the base station’s hardware requirements. This helps keep a lid on manufacturing costs. Second, by moving to eXtremeDB from existing, internally-developed database code, Airspan’s engineering team slashed Air4G’s development and QA cycles by approximately nine developer-months, according to Moti Bitter, director in R&D, Airspan Networks.
"The in-memory database system product category has grown considerably, resulting in IMDSs that can meet specialized needs. eXtremeDB’s speed and efficiency enables Air4G to execute complex scheduler and link-adaptation algorithms, achieving higher capacity and throughput, as well as excellent use of the spectrum," Bitter said.
Air4G builds on Airspan’s highly regarded MacroMAXe product as its foundation, leveraging the successful WiMAX functionality of the base station and enhancing the product with a new 4G LTE platform. Support for both standards enables carriers to increase the service range and bandwidth offered to end-users while cutting expenses, with the opportunity to migrate their networks to LTE when ready and at a desired pace. With a compact, all-outdoor design, Air4G is designed for quick, easy and affordable deployment.
Within Air4G, McObject’s in-memory database system runs in a Linux-based application supporting the eNodeB base station component of LTE architecture. eXtremeDB stores operator-provided settings such as operating frequency and transmit power, as well as transient data that is kept in RAM for each call/session. eXtremeDB is also used to synchronize data between different modules in the eNodeB application.
Airspan Networks decided to integrate a commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) embedded database system in Air4G’s eNodeB application after determining that extending an in-house database system for use in the project would increase project time by about 9 developer-months. Testing against another COTS in-memory database system convinced Airspan’s engineers of eXtremeDB’s best-in-class speed and efficiency, for the following reasons:
Faster application programming interface (API). Many databases – including the other IMDS considered for Air4G – support only SQL as an API. SQL provides a high level of abstraction, but at the cost of processing overhead. eXtremeDB supports SQL, but it also offers a faster, native API consisting of C functions that are embedded in, and compiled with, application code. Airspan’s engineers preferred eXtremeDB ‘s native API, given the base station’s need for speed, predictability and efficient use of CPU cycles.
Data stored as C/C++ structures. SQL requires conversion of C/C++ data types to SQL format, for storage in SQL tables. In contrast, eXtremeDB stores data in exactly the form used by the application: as C/C++ data structures. This eliminates the conversion step, which boosts speed, and reduces eXtremeDB’s code size and CPU demands.
In-process architecture. The other database considered for Air4G uses client/server architecture. eXtremeDB runs entirely within the application process, eliminating the overhead of inter-process communication (IPC) between client and server modules. IPC consumes both processing time and power, and eliminating it enhances speed and efficiency.
Highly portable. McObject designed eXtremeDB with minimal reliance on operating system services (such as IPC messaging). As a result, eXtremeDB is highly portable, a characteristic desired by Airspan.
Reputation. Airspan’s engineers checked with contacts at other companies that had used eXtremeDB in demanding telecommunications and networking settings. These engineers vouched for the database system’s speed, efficiency and reliability.

Airspan 4G Solution Deployed By STS Romania For Nationwide Mobile WiMAX Network
http://www.thestreet.com/story/11054708/1/airspan-4g-solution-deployed-by-sts-romania-for-nationwide-mobile-wimax-network.html
BOCA RATON, FL -- (Marketwire) -- 03/22/11 -- Airspan Networks Inc., a leading provider of broadband wireless access networks, announced today that the Special Telecommunications Services (STS) of Romania, with the assistance of local partner Mobilis, has deployed Airspan's 4G solution for its countrywide network.
STS is the telecommunications arm of the government of Romania and the largest state body providing special telecommunications services and operating networks for the Romanian public authorities. After intensive testing, STS selected Airspan equipment which was delivered, installed and activated by Mobilis, a national Romanian certified systems integrator. The communications infrastructure, using Airspan's 4G equipment, is serving to connect thousands of government, public safety, border patrol and administrative offices nationwide. The project investment by STS totals more than 20 million Euros with Airspan encompassing the primary communications solution.
The network is built to comply with rigorous European standards as this 4G network is a result of the Schengen Agreement/Treaty which calls for the removal of systematic border controls between the participating countries and extends the EU immigration system. In essence, the Airspan powered network is a critical building-block enabling a new era of economic development in Romania.
This network is the largest mobile IEEE 802.16e-2005 WiMAX network in Europe to date and one of the most advanced technologically, capable of truly 4th generation services above and beyond basic broadband connectivity. The network currently exceeds 1,500 base station sectors.
"After an extensive testing and points-based consideration process, Airspan emerged as the clear winner," commented Vasilica Lungu, CEO of Mobilis. "For a large project such as this, it was crucial that we not only have a product that provides the technical capabilities, but also that we partner with a dependable and experienced vendor such as Airspan."
"Airspan is very proud to have won this contract. The requirements imposed by this customer were of the highest, most complex standards and the competition was fierce," commented Eric Stonestrom, President and Chief Executive Officer of Airspan. "Furthermore, all of the specific applications required were field tested by the customer in real conditions. The network supports a range of services from robust, fixed, multi-service (voice, video, high capacity data, VLANs) locations to fully mobile units (police, border patrol, etc) all concurrently running on the same sectors. This win unequivocally demonstrates that Airspan has one of the most stable and feature-rich 4G platforms in the industry. Our focus on network capacity optimization and coverage enhancement helps government agencies, utilities, and public carriers alike optimize mainstream communications and bandwidth-intensive applications like CCTV and security using both 4G interfaces (WiMAX and LTE) and in a variety of economical form factors."
The Schengen Agreement is a treaty originally signed in 1985, in Schengen, Luxembourg, between five of the ten member states of the European Community: Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany. The Schengen Agreement provides for the removal of internal border controls between the participating countries and allows for free movement of persons. Later added into European Union law, the borderless zone created by the Schengen Agreements, "the Schengen Area," currently consists of twenty-five European countries. With the integration of this 4G network, Romania signed the Schengen Treaty, demonstrated its capacity of fulfilling the requirements related to the Schengen technical standards and this year passed the technical evaluation needed to become a participating member.

I almost never even consider or play stocks this high in price, especially that have done an R/S, but there is something about this one that makes it very intriguing. Along with R/S there was a decrease in A/S to 2,000,000 perhaps a signal that they will not attempt to dilute beyond that point.
Alot of news lately:

Only ~ 200,000 shares O/S at last report with 2,000,000 A/S, putting market cap at ~ $650,000. Last revenue numbers we know for Year End 2008 were ~ $70,000,000 and it was listed on Nasdaq as well. With news of new contracts and partners it's clear the company is not dead, if this one even thinks about becoming current again with the valuation at the moment has great potential for a run based on news and revenue IMO. That said they have not been kind to shareholders in the past, we'll have to see if that will change.
