How am I doing this wrong? Puts looking good today
There's more to this than don't fight the fed.
What other mega-cap semiconductor company is getting cut in half? maybe more?
It's called, "Don't fight the Fed".
The Fed has been fighting a feared recession for close to 2 decades, perhaps a bit longer.
After their main weapon was completely used(interest rates near zero), it started several rounds of quantitative easing. With inflation now rearing its ugly head, all that will be withdrawn -- the excess liguidity is being removed and interest rates will go up to normal levels.
That doesn't change the fact that AMD is taking share from INTC and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. INTC no longer has Andy Grove (Only The Paranoid Survive) and has lost its technical leadership and its ability to leapfrog its competition. The world of chips changed, INTC didn't.
So AMD and NVDA will continue to take market share from INTC, continue to improve margins and profits, and continue to build a much stronger balance sheet. Might the stock price continue to go down while its financials continue to improve? Almost certainly. But once the Fed takes both feet off the brakes, companies should again be judged based upon their own fundamentals.
I'm no longer a day trader nor anything close to it. I'll hold rather than attempt to time a new entry point.
FWIW,
Ian
Agreed. This is why i just keep buying calls
Wow this is unreal. So even good news is bad news?
TSM just beat.
They confirmed the chip shortage isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
TSM stated companies trying to overstock chips because of shortage (hence inventory increases.)
They don't have enough production capacity to meet demand.
High performance computing and Automotive are the main driving factors of revenue (with consumer PC being a small %.)
And $AMD keeps dropping like companies who sold Intellectual property to China or companies where CEO was just found guilty of falsifying earning reports.
I keep hearing about ARM taking market share... But ARM took INTC market share with the apple m1... NOT AMDs. AMD hasn't even made product for apple, and apple just delayed their macbook launch... so... once again, less supply equals more demand, even on the consumer PC side of things.
Going from overbought to oversold drops the share price 3-5$... Going from oversold to overbought increases the share price 2$ if we're lucky.
This shit is not natural.
AMD Rallies Support from Reddit Traders
By: TheStreet | April 13, 2022
• AMD's diehard supporters are sticking with the semiconductor company even as its stock price struggles.
Once again the battle lines are being drawn.
On one side, we have the traditional Wall Street investment community.
On the other, we have the social media crowd who rally around a stock they think is being treated unfairly by old school types.
Market Under Pressure
The semiconductor sector has been under pressure as the economy slows down and consumers' buying power shrinks, pushing them to postpone buying non-priority items like electronic gadgets.
Semiconductor manufacturers, like tech companies, are also suffering from the tightening of monetary policy by the Federal Reserve.
While interest rate hikes are intended to curb inflation, they can also be a blow to growth.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and the three other largest U.S. chip makers by market cap--Nvidia (NVDA), Intel (INTC), and Micron (MU) recently lost nearly $110 billion in market value in a week.
AMD, which is scheduled to report first-quarter earnings on May 2, saw its share price fall 40.4% from $161.91 on Nov. 29 to about $96.45 on Tuesday.
Last week, Truist analyst William Stein slashed his price target on AMD to $111 from $144, while keeping a hold rating, according to The Fly.
Stein cited "hard evidence" of a sudden negative shift in demand signals from a wide range of compute, consumer, and communications original equipment manufacturers or OEMs, driving his recent of 2023 models to contemplate negative growth and lower earnings multiples for the industry.
'Move to the Sidelines'
Stein said that while it is "challenging" to justify any downgrades, his conviction on semiconductors was now lower.
It was also last week that AMD said it had agreed to a $1.9 billion takeover of enterprise services start-up company Pensando.
AMD shares took a hit late last month when Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis lowered his rating on AMD to equal weight from overweight, while cutting his price target by around 22% to $115 per share, citing "cyclical risk across several end markets" looming in 2023.
The company said in February that 2022 revenues should come in north of $21.5 billion, a 30% increase from last that that is also well ahead of the Refinitiv forecast of $19.25 billion, thanks to surging demand for its data center chips.
* * *
"We would rather move to the sidelines until we have better clarity as to the magnitude of these corrections and what the competitive landscape will look like as Intel catches up and ARM takes more share," Curtis added.
However, several commenters on Reddit feel Wall Street is giving AMD short shrift.
"AMD is punished for no reason... WAIT IT OUT," one person wrote last week. "Less than a decade ago, Wall Street was certain AMD was down for the count."
The lengthy post dismissed several stock analysts as "clowns" none of whom "had the least clue about technology."
"All of them were brushing off the console contracts AMD had secured with Microsoft and Sony. The Graphics IP from ATI and the strength of AMD in the budget PC market were all ignored."
'A Solid Book of Business'
"I am really looking forward to this earnings, because we can once again show to the wallstreet folks that AMD is a changed company with a lot fortune in the future," one poster said on Reddit.
"I think they hit their target and reiterate guidance," another commented. "There's a lot of fear of a slowdown, but AMD should have a solid book of business."
"It enrages me to see such enormous price drops on the back of analysts saying demand 'might' be slowing down," another said. "They say absolutely nothing with conviction, and yet they tank the price. And then a top analyst comes out and says, WITH conviction, to the effect of 'AMD will be fine, I advise buying, PT $200', and nothing."
"The price has come down such an absurd amount at this point, and is having just as absurd swings," the commenter concluded.
Feelings were running equally high over on Twitter, where one commenter said "the sell-off on this stock is a galactic sea of Bullsh*t."
"This stock is money, i aint worried... earnings gonna crush. lots of cash, M&A, and expanding product line. long term no brainer," another person tweeted.
"I’m not touching my #NVDA stock and my #AMD for a loooong time!" another commenter said.

Nvidia, AMD and Intel Price Targets Are Cut. This Analyst Sees Semiconductor Demand Slowing
By: Barron's | April 8, 2022
Semiconductor stocks have soared over the last few quarters, driven higher by robust demand for chips amid a global supply shortage.
But the tide may be turning for semiconductor manufacturers, warned Truist analyst William Stein.
“On Wednesday afternoon we learned of a sudden negative shift in demand signals from a wide swath of computer, consumer, and communications OEMs [original equipment manufacturer] to at least some of their semi suppliers,” he wrote in a research note.
Stein noted the cuts related mostly to production in the second quarter, but demand throughout the second half of the year remained strong. While a single-quarter adjustment or a temporary headwind was possible, he was concerned that “a combination of just enough demand destruction and just enough additional supply is leading to a traditional cyclical downturn.”
As a result, Stein adjusted his price targets for several key semiconductor stocks, including Advanced Micro Devices (ticker: AMD ), Intel ( INTC ) and Nvidia ( NVDA ). His new price target for AMD is $111, down from $144, while Intel’s target was cut to $49 from $53. He retained a Hold rating on both the stocks.
Nvidia remained a Buy for Stein, even though he lowered his price target to $298 from $347. While he is constructive on the stock and continues to rate it a Buy, he said near-term price effects could become more volatile.
His favored stocks were NXP Semiconductors ( NXPI ), Analog Devices ( ADI ), and ON Semiconductor ( ON ), which he said were less exposed to demand from the computer, communications, and consumer segment and were more reliant on industrial and auto demand.
Semiconductor stocks had been on a tear over the last seven quarters, but have since begun to normalize, with semi stocks off 20% from their peak last December, Stein said.
AMD stock was down 1.5% to $102.23 on Friday. The stock has lost almost 30% this year. Intel was down 1% to $47.10, while Nvidia was down 2.4% to $236.38.

AMD Stock: Why It Tumbled and Where It’s Headed
By: TipRanks | April 2, 2022
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall -- and crashing right down beside him was semiconductor giant Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), which lost 8% of its market capitalization -- about $16 billion -- after investment bank Barclays downgraded its stock to Equalweight (i.e. Hold) on Thursday.
Despite admitting that AMD will, in all likelihood, exceed expectations for 31% sales growth this year, and gain market share "in both the client and server markets" besides, Barclays' 5-star analyst Blayne Curtis cut his rating on AMD -- and cut his price target by 22%, to $115 a share. (To watch Curtis' track record, click here)
As Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis explained, "we see cyclical risk across several end markets (PC, Gaming, and broad-based/XLNX)" for AMD somewhere in the "2024/2025" timeframe. Although that's still a few years away, and although in the nearer term, Curtis admitted that AMD is still growing strongly, the analyst nevertheless said he would "rather move to the sidelines until we have better clarity as to the magnitude of these corrections and what the competitive landscape will look like."
But Rosenblatt analyst Hans Mosesmann thinks that's just crazy talk.
Addressing "incoming calls [presumably from its clients] regarding weakness in AMD shares," Mosesmann placed the blame for AMD's decline directly on Barclays' downgrade "on 2023 cyclical issues" and to resulting "angst" on the part of investors. But rather than echo Barclays' insecurity, Mosesmann urged Rosenblatt's clients to slow down and conduct a "sanity check."
Barclays' analysis, says Mosesmann, is tied to worries about "potential consumer weakness in PCs and mobile." But as Mosesmann points out, AMD actually "does not sell into this market," and so would not be affected even if this weakness does arise. He also notes that while Barclays raises cyclical industry concerns about AMD, it does not appear to have similar fears for cyclicality for Intel (INTC) or Nvidia (NVDA) -- despite the fact that all three of these companies work in the same cyclical industry.
Also nonsensical, in Mosesmann's view, is selling AMD stock despite the fact that:
• The company "is not in any jeopardy of missing the +30% y/y sales growth target for 2022" -- a fact even Barclays concedes.
• To the contrary, AMD is continuing "to gain PC CPU market share" (as Barclays also concedes).
• Intel has delayed introduction of both its Sapphire Rapids and Granite Rapids server processors into 2024, which suggests "Intel has limited ability to defend server share at any price."
• There is no evidence of "broad aggressive PC CPU pricing from either AMD or Intel" (i.e. a price war that would drive profits down for all players).
• The more so in Intel's case, because a price war would exacerbate that company's "extreme sensitivity to gross margins."
Long story short, Mosesmann sees little reason to worry about AMD, and even less reason to dump AMD stock. To the contrary, given that "AMD fundamentals are better today than they were entering the year ... we are buyers," insists Mosesmann.
Unsurprisingly, the analyst gives AMD a Buy rating and a Street-high price target of $200. Should his thesis play out, a potential upside of ~85% could be in the cards. (To watch Mosesmann’s track record, click here)
AMD tends to attract a lot of attention – the stock has 21 analyst reviews on record, and they include 14 Buys against 7 Holds to give the stock its Moderate Buy consensus recommendation. The shares have an average price target of $150.41, indicating room for 39% growth from the current price of $108.19.

AMD to buy cloud startup Pensando for $1.9 billion in data center push
By: Reuters | April 4, 2022

(Reuters) – Chip designer Advanced Micro Devices said on Monday it would acquire cloud startup Pensando for $1.9 billion to bolster its data center products and capitalize on booming demand from cloud and enterprise sectors.
AMD said the deal value does not include working capital and other adjustments.
Pensando, which was founded in 2017 by a group of four ex-Cisco Systems Inc engineers, counts Goldman Sachs and Microsoft Corp’s cloud unit Azure as its customers.
The startup makes a fully programmable processor and a software platform, which helps enterprise clients and data center customers to function more like cloud computing data centers like Amazon’s Amazon Web Services.
In cloud computing, customers can order as much computing power as needed in different parts of the world with a few mouse clicks. The software takes care of the mechanics of shuffling the data to the right physical machines.
The lucrative data center chip business is rife with competition, with AMD rivals Intel Corp and Nvidia Corp <NVDA.O stepping up their offerings to grab market share and as software to ensure that chip performance is optimum is becoming an increasingly important part of chip makers’ offerings.
Only last month, Nvidia had released a new chip to speed up artificial intelligence functions in data centers.
The deal, which would enable AMD to add Pensando’s platform to its line of processors and graphics chips, is expected to close in the second quarter of this year.
Pensando’s Chief Executive Officer Prem Jain and the entire team will join AMD’s Data Center Solutions Group.

Bull of the Day: Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)
By: Zacks Investment Research | April 4, 2022
I've written about Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) as the Bull of the Day several times this year.
That's because it continues to maintain its status as a Zacks #1 Rank Strong Buy after analysts keep raising estimates.
But there's always a bull-bear battle somewhere in Semis and last week brought us this naysayer warning about the PC and gaming markets...
Barclays downgrades AMD to Equal Weight from Overweight
Analyst Blayne Curtis slashed the firm's price target from $148 to $115, saying that "the company's growth story needs a pause" with cyclical risks looming in 2023.
"AMD remains positioned to gain market share this year in both the client and server markets, but cyclical risk across several of its end markets, including PC, gaming and broad-based, will come in 2023," said the analyst. He believes all three segments are running at elevated levels, which poses risk to AMD's growth trajectory.
Well, that's one view in a diverse sea of bull-bear perspectives. Here was the rebuttal on the same day, March 31...
AMD weakness on competitor downgrade a buying opportunity
Rosenblatt analyst Hans Mosesmann said AMD share weakness today is being driven by a competitor downgrade on 2023 cyclical issues, "angst on potential consumer weakness in PCs and mobile" even though he says AMD does not sell into this market, and a potential price war with Intel (INTC Quick QuoteINTC - Free Report) .
However, Mosesmann contends that AMD is "not in any jeopardy" of missing its 30% year-over-year sales growth target for 2022 as he views AMD being set to gain significant data center market share, which "is the thrust of the investment thesis, not a PC market that is up or down 5%."
And here was a broader view of the Semi market from BofA on March 25...
BofA tactically most constructive on "MANGO" stocks in U.S. Semiconductors
The PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index (SOX) is down 11% year-to-date versus the S&P 500's decline of 5%, noted BofA analyst Vivek Arya, and his recent discussions with investors about the US Semiconductors sector "have overwhelmingly been focused more on cycle worries like peaking demand and rising capex than on company fundamentals," the analyst wrote.
However, as long as global GDP remains above trend, semi stocks are attractive and the "structural importance of semis to the rapidly digitizing global economy cannot be overstated," Arya contends. In that context, Arya made a "crude attempt at constructing a fang equivalent in semis" and came up with "MANGO," an acronym that stands for Marvell (MRVL), Broadcom (AVGO), AMD (AMD), Analog Devices (AMD), NVIDIA (NVDA), GlobalFoundries (GFS) and ON Semiconductor (ON)
Arya identifies these Semi stocks as those which he is tactically most constructive about. He has "high conviction" that these names are "levered to the right end-markets with solid demand visibility and consistent execution," Arya added.
Here's how I view the unique position of AMD, from my recent articles...
The Rise of a Duopoly in HPC and AI
AMD has strengthened its position in the semiconductor market on the back of its evolution as an enterprise-focused company from a pure-bred consumer PC and gaming chip provider.
And after another beat-and-raise quarter -- where the Lisa Su starship offered guidance for Q1 EPS that was 30% above consensus Street estimates -- the stock is on its way back to the old highs.
AMD has emerged as a strong challenger to NVIDIA's (NVDA) dominance in the GPU (graphic processing unit) market based on its Radeon technology. Launch of 7 nanometer (nm)-based AMD Radeon RX 5700-series gaming graphics card family featuring RDNA architecture, high-speed GDDR6 (Graphics Double Data Rate type 6) memory and support for the PCIe 4.0 interface, has helped the company increase presence among gamers.
Since the technology of GPU chips for gaming has driven the R&D for high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI), AMD has joined NVDA in the "category of two" where enterprises and scientific research institutions must have their technologies to crunch large amounts of data at hyper-speed.
In fact, many use both companys' chipsets to foster "dissimilar redundancy" in platform architecture, performance, reliability, and sourcing.
Bottom line on AMD: I still believe shares are a bargain near $100 and would continue to recommend them to investors.

NICE!!!! I am inclined to agree with you.
And AMD, without a doubt should be easy money.
I am worried that this media slander is an Intel driven agenda now.
It's obvious the US govt has chosen sides. And they didn't choose the winning side IMO. Where's AMD's money Joe?
Time will tell... AMD used to be the bottom feeders driving down the prices just to maintain cashflow. Now the tables have turned. Intel has revealed themselves as the bottom feeder...
I just hope we don't have to wait very long before this reveals itself!
Bought 300 shares in the last 2 days easy money!
Long and strong !
Have a great weekend you and all !
AMD $$$$
yea... I think it's overdone here. We are going down due to PC demand, after we add a company that gives us exposure to AI, Auto, Aerospace, Mobile/Wireless, and enhances data-center exposure as well.
The chips for the above sectors are not going anywhere. And are still in high demand, set for extreme growth.
Doesn't make much sense. AMD just broke out of the down trending range this week. AMD also was added to the top tier with several analyst firms, such as Zacks.
Now we are back into the down trending range... With $8 billion in share buybacks on the horizon.
I'm wondering when they start to pull the trigger with the buybacks. Around the 100$ level, the buyback would be able to take out 5-6% of the oustanding shares..
Funny watching stupid MM‘s !
AMD $$$$
Some need cheap shares here !
Time to go up now slowly but sure !
AMD $$$$
Quite a haircut - analysts gotta love ‘em
Although I agree with the short-term bearishness... and all my shorts printed... And would have printed regardless of their hit-piece. This is quite over done!
Barclay's just revealed their hand. Looks like they are attempting to mitigate current internal problems. Probably relating to why an investors dumped $1.2Bill of their stock recently.
Hilarious that they mention 2023 as the year for AMD cyclical risks. 2023 is the expected commencement of production for the TSMC fab in Phoenix Arizona. At this plant they will mfg AMD 5nm technology and will be the premier facility at the time when production commences. Not only is AMD already vastly ahead of their competitor in design, but they will also be the first to market as a manufacturer of high-end semis within the US borders.
Barclay's even stated they expect AMD to continue to capture market share... HAHAHA! This is all AMD need to do during uncertain times. What I have stated above will be the driver for continued exponential growth into 2023.
Pretty bad analysis IMO.
Price target seems fair, which I doubt this analyst derived by himself.
His understanding of the semi market was revealed to be extremely poor.
Lets see how this plays out.
