4 Semiconductor Stocks to Keep on Your Watch List
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | March 24, 2022
• Supply chain shortages bring semiconductors to the spotlight
• Semiconductors essentially power the modern world
Additionally, supply chain issues are causing a bottleneck, which in turn is causing chip shortages and making them unreasonably expensive. These shortages are predicted to last up to a couple of years, but nobody knows exactly what will happen. The best thing you can do to capitalize on this amazing industry is research companies that are making moves within the semiconductor space.
ADVANCED MICRO DEVICES, INC (NASDAQ:AMD)
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is one of the most popular names in the semiconductor space. AMD's stock price has grown over 3,000% since the company went public, which is well deserved as it continues to steal market share from competitors such as Intel. Up until about 2016, Intel was dominating as they controlled more than 70% of the central processing unit (CPU) market share. To compete, Advanced Micro Devices created their Ryzen microprocessor, which is much more affordable and was able to challenge Intel’s chips. Consumers naturally began to purchase more AMD chips as there was no longer a compelling reason to spend the extra money on the Intel chips. By 2021, Advanced Micro Devices had managed to increase its share of the market to a whopping 50%, and is working to gain more each day.
NVIDIA CORPORATION (NASDAQ:NVDA)
Nvidia (NVDA) is a huge player in the semiconductor space as they have a firm grip on the graphics processing unit (GPU) market share. With the rise of popularity in crypto markets, Nvidia's GPUs are flying off the shelves as more people move to mine cryptocurrencies. The gaming market is Nvidia’s most significant revenue generator and accounted for about $3 billion of its second-quarter revenue in 2021. NVDA is also expanding into the latest technological advances such as AI, robotics, and machine learning, allowing it to compete with other AI competitors such as Intel and AMD. Nvidia’s second-largest revenue generator is its data center segment as they are continually upgrading their GPU technology to meet market demand. NVDA is currently working with other big tech companies like Google and Microsoft to develop parallel computing infrastructures for machine learning as the application of GPUs continues to grow in the artificial intelligence (AI) space due to their high processing power.
TAIWAN SEMICONDUCTOR MFG. CO. LTD. (NYSE:TSM)
Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) is the largest semiconductor chip foundry in the world. Until just recently, TSM had the largest market cap in the semiconductor industry of over $500 billion. However, Nvidia just surpassed them after its market cap is moved near $700 billion. As a foundry, Taiwan Semiconductor's customer base includes many of the non-foundry semiconductor companies such as AMD, Nvidia, and even Apple. Its cutting-edge technology allows them to manufacture chips at the smallest node size, which provides their customers with a competitive advantage in their products. The relationships built between TSM and their customers are mutually beneficial, as it allows each to build differentiated leadership in their specific markets as they do business together. Because Taiwan Semiconductor specializes as a foundry, they can help eliminate their customers' capital expenditure risk while also not having to take on product risk themselves. This makes TSM a major player of the semiconductor industry, and allows for their customers to focus on upgrading their products while maintaining their competitive advantages.
INTEL CORPORATION (NASDAQ:INTC)
Intel (INTC) has always been a staple in the semiconductor market. INTC controlled a dominant portion of the CPU market share for many years until competition like AMD came about and began to threaten their dominance. One of the main competitive advantages Intel has is its global, in-house factory network that allows them to manufacture at-scale much better than their competitors. This allows for better product optimization, supply resilience, and improved economics in general. For this reason, INTC has remained resilient in AMD’s attempts to continually steal market share because Intel is simply such a big powerhouse it is almost impossible to completely overthrow them. Intel is also working on building its world-class foundry business which will have Amazon and Qualcomm as their first customers. INTC has a roadmap that will take its product development through 2025 which strikes some investor confidence that Intel is making the right moves to continue being a powerhouse in the semiconductor industry.

Oh, absolutely correct sir..but myself personally i am more of a trader than an investor..
Actualfactual, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is a fine and well run company and should do well in the long term future.

Let's hear what the bulk of positive analyst reactions were focused on in this report...
AMD price target raised to $155 from $145 at Jefferies: Analyst Mark Lipacis noted the remarkable results and outlook with Q4 EPS and Q1 EPS guidance that were 21% and 31%, respectively, above consensus. After about 600 basis points of server CPU revenue share gains in 2021, he expects another 200-300 points in server share gains in Q1, adding that he believes its next-gen server significantly increases its average selling prices due to much higher core counts.
AMD price target raised to $160 from $150 at Cowen: Analyst Matthew Ramsay noted the guide to 31% growth to start the year which was well above his expectations. He said market share gains are driving significant growth in PCs and servers, further amplified by GPU/console upside. Ramsay said the guidance to start the year shows visibility into customer-driven demand and improved supply.
AMD price target raised to $160 from $140 at Raymond James: Analyst Chris Caso said "AMD's December quarter results were exceptional," and thinks there's an expectation that numbers will move higher throughout the year as more supply becomes available, particularly in 2H22.
AMD price target raised to $165 from $155 at KeyBanc: Analyst John Vinh noted AMD's strong results and guidance, both of which were above expectations driven by strength in client PC, which grew DD% year-over-year, and data center, which more than doubled year-over-year and exited 2021 at mid-20% of total revenues. Accordingly, AMD sees over 30% revenue growth in 2022 and, Vinh noted, management believes it has secured enough capacity to support this growth.
AMD price target raised to $180 from $175 at Susquehanna: Analyst Christopher Rolland said upside was broad-based across all segments and should continue into 1Q22 as better demand and supply both contribute to March guidance that now bucks the typical first-quarter seasonal decline. He said the company is buying stock, $1B worth in just the last few weeks, and he recommends investors do the same. As the second-biggest bull -- next to me -- Rolland gives sound advice.

As much as I love this company and want this stock to go up:
1) GPU/CPU sales have slowed considerably in the past few months.
2) Shortage is over and used market is flush with listings.
3) Used market prices have dropped 20-30% already and will pull down new prices.
4) Mineral/commodity prices have gone up.
5) Crypto Mining is becoming less profitable.
-Electricity prices are inflating as well
6) If ETH 2.0 comes to fruition, this will create even more of a used market
oversupply than already exists, dragging prices down further.
If this trades up in the 120-130$ zone and above, I will build a nice short position. Could be wrong and data center segment may drastically outperform.
Would love to hear the bull case here...

AMD’s new Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor will be available on April 20th for $449
By: The Verge | March 15, 2022
• Along with a new slate of more affordable processors coming April 4th
AMD’s latest desktop processor, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, has finally gotten a release date and price after being announced earlier this year at CES 2022. It’ll hit stores next month on April 20th for $449, ushering in what AMD proudly declares to be the “world’s fastest gaming processor.
The new Ryzen 7 5800X3D is extremely similar to the original Ryzen 7 5800X model, with eight cores, 16 threads, and compatibility with AMD’s AM4 socket. But there’s one major difference: the Ryzen 7 5800X3D marks the debut of AMD’s 3D-stacking V-Cache technology, allowing AMD to up the L3 cache from 32MB to 96MB. The company says that the additional cache should translate to about a 15 percent boost in overall performance compared to the Ryzen 5900X (despite the fact that the 5900X has 12 cores and 24 threads).
The company also announced a slate of several other new Zen 2 and Zen 3 desktop processors across the lower end of its range, from the $299 Ryzen 7 5700X (which offers eight cores, 16 threads, and a boosted clock speed of 4.6GHz) down to the $99 Ryzen 3 4100 at the base of the company’s lineup.
The Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 3 models will also come bundled with an AMD Wraith Cooler and will be available starting April 4th, a few ahead of the Ryzen 5800X3D. The full list of new processors

AMD: Current Share Price Weakness Offers Buying Opportunity
By: Investing.com | March 10, 2022
After rallying strongly in 2021, shares of Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) seem to have lost their mojo. So far this year, the California-based chipmaker lost about 22% of its market value.
AMD Daily
However, the steep decline makes investors wonder: has this pullback gone too far?
There is no doubt that AMD is not a favorite stock to own when the environment is becoming increasingly hostile for high-growth companies.
The US Federal Reserve is about to reverse its monetary easing at a time when inflation is at a four-decade high level. In addition, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its impact on the global commodity supply is another shock that could push the global economy into a recession, depressing demand for everything.
But the good news for AMD bulls is that other than these macro risks, the company is firmly on its growth path, consistently taking market share from its biggest competitor Intel (NASDAQ:INTC).
The chipmaker's first-quarter sales outlook is quite strong, indicating that AMD is close to reaching Intel's profitability levels—something that would have been inconceivable just a few years ago.
AMD told investors in February that its gross margin—the percentage of sales remaining after deducting production costs—will be about 51% this year. That's nearly on par with Intel's projection of 53%, a significant turnaround compared to five years ago when Intel boasted a margin of more than 63% and AMD was at 31%.
Moreover, advances at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM), which makes chips on AMD's behalf, are propelling the company's competitiveness in computer, gaming console, and data center spaces, further challenging Intel's long-time leadership.
Strong Demand From Data Centers
That outsourcing strategy helped AMD when Intel suffered a series of manufacturing setbacks, repeatedly falling behind in introducing new chips. After last month's earnings report, AMD Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su told analysts that her company is on track to gain market share as new products become increasingly popular.
AMD data center sales, including chips used by companies such as Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), doubled last year compared with 2020. In the latest earnings report, AMD said that demand from its cloud customers is increasing, deploying its Epyc server chips in their data centers.
AMD is also the second-largest maker of graphics chips used in add-on cards by PC gamers. It supplies graphics chips used in Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox and Sony's (NYSE:SONY) PlayStation. Demand for the two-game consoles "continues to outpace all prior generations," AMD said in slides prepared for its earnings call.
This strength has prompted many analysts to upgrade their forecast on AMD in recent weeks. In an Investing.com poll of 40 analysts, 26 gave an "outperform" rating on the stock, with a 12-month price target that implies 36.15% upside.
AMD Consensus Estimates
Source: Investing.com
In a recent note, investment firm Bernstein also upgraded the chip-maker to "outperform" from market-perform, saying that the stock might be too attractive to pass up. Its note says:
"With the combination of continued stellar execution, increasingly bankable earnings power, and a recent sizeable pullback, making valuation (dare we say?) downright attractive, we are, for the first time in almost a decade, pulling the trigger."
Bernstein kept its price target on AMD at $150 per share, which is nearly 43% above where the stock closed on Tuesday, adding:
"Amazingly though, the company's own execution has done nothing but improve. Forward EPS estimates have actually increased by almost 30% since that peak just a few months ago, with more than 100% of the stock's decline attributable to multiple compression with [price to forwarding earnings] down almost 50%."
Bottom Line
Except for macro risks, it seems everything else is going right for AMD. In our view, its current weakness opens a door for long-term investors to build their position. That said, the stock is unlikely to offer the kind of hefty returns that investors made last year when the global economy was on a different path.

Bull of the Day: Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)
By: Zacks Investment Research | March 9, 2022
I last wrote about Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) a month ago, after another stellar beat-and-raise quarter, and the story has only gotten better. The price has gotten better too with the market fallout on the Russian military invasion of Ukraine.
And the company gave investors another reason to take advantage of the bargain levels with the announcement of an additional $8 billion share repurchase program.
On February 24, AMD announced that its board of directors approved a new $8B share repurchase program. The new authorization is in addition to the $4B share repurchase program announced in May, under which the company has repurchased approximately $3B of shares of AMD common stock.
"We are pleased to expand our share repurchase program based on the strength of our balance sheet and expectations for future free cash flow generation," said AMD Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su. "With our strong financial performance, we are able to increase investments to drive long-term growth while returning additional value to our shareholders."
And two days prior, we saw this nice upgrade...
Bernstein upgrades AMD to Outperform with $150 price target: Analyst Stacy Rasgon wrote in a research note that the combination of continued stellar execution, increasingly bankable earnings power, and a recent sizeable pullback made the valuation downright attractive. So the analyst is, for the first time in almost a decade, pulling the trigger and upgrading the stock to Outperform.
Rasgon noted that since the November peak the stock has fallen 30%, entirely due to the multiple and now trades under 30-times near-term EPS and 20-times a likely $5-plus in earnings power, approaching the cheapest in 5 years. Overall, the analyst believes the stock is looking "increasingly attractive for investors who might have continued to sit on the fence, likely for too long."
Of course, I couldn't agree more. And the analyst didn't even consider the relative valuation to AMD's only peer, NVIDIA.
The Rise of a Duopoly in HPC and AI
AMD has strengthened its position in the semiconductor market on the back of its evolution as an enterprise-focused company from a pure-bred consumer PC and gaming chip provider.
And after another beat-and-raise quarter -- where the Lisa Su starship offered guidance for Q1 EPS that was 30% above consensus Street estimates -- the stock is on its way back to the old highs.
AMD has emerged as a strong challenger to NVIDIA's (NVDA Quick QuoteNVDA - Free Report) dominance in the GPU (graphic processing unit) market based on its Radeon technology. Launch of 7 nanometer (nm)-based AMD Radeon RX 5700-series gaming graphics card family featuring RDNA architecture, high-speed GDDR6 (Graphics Double Data Rate type 6) memory and support for the PCIe 4.0 interface, has helped the company increase presence among gamers.
Since the technology of GPU chips for gaming has driven the R&D for high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI), AMD has joined NVDA in the "category of two" where enterprises and scientific research institutions must have their technologies to crunch large amounts of data at hyper-speed.
In fact, many use both company chipsets to foster "dissimilar redundancy" in platform architecture, performance, reliability, and sourcing.
I've been a big AMD bull since last March when you could buy it at $75. I last wrote about it publicly in late October and here's what I said...
Why I've Been Pounding the Table on AMD Since $75
I'm going to share more details about this fantastic growth -- plus a bandwagon full of analyst reactions -- but first let me explain why I was telling everyone who would listen this past spring to buy AMD at $75.
Essentially, it was all about how well CEO Lisa Su and her teams were executing in the dynamic, cutting-edges of semiconductor innovation, just like my favorite GPU-maker NVIDIA.
Plus, not only was she eating Intel's lunch at every turn in PCs and notebooks with sub-10 nanometer technology, the stock was consistently trading at half the valuation of NVDA.
Even today, AMD is trading for under 8 times next year's projected sales of $18.8 billion while NVDA leaves the atmosphere (for chips) at over 21X sales!
See an excellent primer on the victory over Intel here...
Release the Ryzen! AMD Roars in the Nanometer Wars
Stunning Q4 and Guidance
AMD reported fourth-quarter 2021 non-GAAP earnings of 92 cents per share, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 22.67%. The bottom line soared 77% year over year and 26% sequentially.
Revenues of $4.83 billion outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 6.69% and surged 49% year over year. On a quarter-over-quarter basis, the top line increased 12%.
Robust performance by the Computing and Graphics, and Enterprise Embedded and Semi-Custom segments drove year-over-year improvement, as AMD benefitted from strong Ryzen, Radeon, and EPYC processor sales.
In my Zacks TAZR Trader portfolio, we already had an AMD position and we were ready to be buyers again near $100. But after the market sell-off lost momentum, and AMD delivered the goods, we had to settle for adding near $120. Here's what I told our members...
AMD Has the Green Light for New Highs
Our bright spot today was a nice beat and stunning outlook from AMD.
Shared gapped up over 10% but met sellers as some analysts only raised price targets into the $130-140 zone like BMO and Truist.
But the Lisa Su starship managed to keep 5% on massive volume of 180 million shares -- the most since it surged to new highs above $120 back in August.
I'll reiterate my stance on AMD: As long as NVDA can trade for over 15X sales (currently 19.5X next year's $31.5B), then AMD is a steal under 10X sales (currently 6.4X next year's $22B). That's why it has the green light to go for the old highs.
(end of TAZR commentary from Feb 2)
Since then, revenue estimates for AMD next year have been boosted to over $24 billion. So with the stock market drop, AMD is now trading for under nearly 5 times sales at $105. Meanwhile, NVDA's consensus revenue forecast for next year has risen to $39.5 billion, which brings its price/sales ratio down to 13.5X at $215.
As I told Zacks Ultimate members in a private member update recently (before Russia-Ukraine), either NVDA is going to come down, or AMD is going for new highs. So far, they've both come down and the P/S spread has narrowed. Which makes AMD even more of a buy right now.

What Does AMD’s Buyback Mean for Its Stock
By: TipRanks | February 28, 2022
Investors love a bit of share buyback action, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has been partaking in plenty of it recently.
Last week, the chip giant disclosed it had authorized a new $8 billion share repurchase program which comes hot on the heels of last May’s $4 billion authorization – for which the company has already purchased $3 billion worth of shares over the last 4 quarters.
“Overall,” said Deutsche Bank’s Ross Seymore, “We believe the expansion of AMD's share repurchase program reflects the company’s continued confidence in its cash generation capabilities and commitment to shareholder returns while still investing for strong revenue growth.”
More than that, however, Seymore thinks the repurchase program is timed to coincide with the Xilinx acquisition. Given the all-stock deal structure, the share count is expected to increase by around 35%, so taking a chunk of shares off the market will help “offset the significant share count dilution.”
It will also help make the EPS accretion the company guided for in the first year of the deal more palatable to Seymore; he had previously thought it was a bit of reach. “The addition of this large buyback program brings us closer to EPS neutrality (albeit still slightly dilutive),” said the analyst. Ultimately, Seymore has reduced the EPS forecast for 2022 from $4.15 to $4.05.
That said, Seymore also notes that should either company’s fundamentals improve, or if cost synergies “come in higher” than the original $300 million guidance, there could be “room for upside” to that figure.
The 5-star analyst summed up, “We look forward to seeing realization of the benefits of this transaction over time (AMD penetration into new markets, incremental opportunities for revenue/cost synergies, etc.) with more detail likely to come on the company's 1Q22 earnings call as well as its June Analyst Day.”
For now, Seymore stays on the sidelines with a Hold rating, while his $140 price target suggests room for 13.5% growth over the coming year.
