Semi-Custom & EPYC Demand to Aid AMD This Earnings Season
By: Zacks Equity Research | August 1, 2022
Advanced Micro Devices’ (AMD) second-quarter 2022 results, to be reported on Aug 2, are expected to benefit from the ongoing momentum in EPYC processors and semi-custom products’ sales.
The addition of Xilinx is expected to have benefited top-line growth in the to-be-reported quarter. The Xilinx acquisition has expanded AMD’s technology and product port through the addition of FPGA and adaptive computing solutions.
However, higher investments by AMD in product development and platform, to retain its competitive stance, are likely to have affected profitability.
Click here to know how the company’s overall Q2 performance is expected to be.
Strong Demand for EPYC Processors: Key Catalyst
AMD has been clinching new deal wins for its EPYC processors from data centers, cloud and high-performance computing companies, including Amazon’s (AMZN) cloud arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS); Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Google Cloud and Microsoft’s (MSFT) Azure.
AWS expanded its EPYC-processor-based offerings with the general availability of general-purpose Amazon EC2 M6a instances.
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Revenue (TTM)
Moreover, Microsoft Azure is using third-generation AMD EPYC processors in its Dasv5 and Easv5 Azure Virtual Machines.
Google Cloud’s latest C2D virtual machine offering has been powered by AMD’s EPYC processors.
AMD’s increased server share is expected to have driven top-line growth in the to-be-reported quarter. AMD is riding on strong demand for both second and third-generation EPYC processors.
In first-quarter 2022, Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom revenues of $2.2 billion were up 88% year over year and 13% sequentially.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom segment’s second-quarter revenues is pegged at $2.77 billion. The projection suggests an increase of 73.2% from the figure reported in the year-ago quarter.
Computing and Graphics Growth to Aid Top Line
AMD is expected to have witnessed steady demand for Ryzen processors in the second quarter due to the growing hybrid working environment.
During the to-be-reported quarter, AMD announced the Ryzen Embedded R2000 Series, second-generation mid-range system-on-chip (SoC) processors optimized for a wide range of industrial and robotics systems, machine vision, IoT and thin-client equipment.
The consensus mark for second-quarter revenues of this Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) company’s Computing and Graphics segment is pegged at $2.69 billion, which indicates an increase of 19.6% on a year-over-year basis. You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.

Advanced Micro Devices Stock Options Pops Before Earnings
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | August 1, 2022
• Over the last two weeks, options traders have taken interest in AMD
• The company reports earnings after the close tomorrow
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) is slated to step into the earnings confessional after the close tomorrow, Aug. 2. Leading up to the event, AMD's options activity has exploded, even as the security sits 32.5% lower year-to-date. And though Advanced Micro Devices stock was last seen 2.5% higher to trade at $96.86 this afternoon, today's positive price action fell short at the 120-day moving average as the security attempts to approach a familiar ceiling at the $100 level.
As for earnings, analysts anticipate second-quarter profits of $1.03 per share and revenue of $6.53 billion. The options pits are pricing in a post-earnings swing of 11.1%, which is much larger than the 5.8% post-earnings move the stock averaged over the past two years. AMD was positive following four of these last eight sessions, including moves of 9.1% and 5.1% in May and February, respectively.
Amid the downtrend it's faced over the course of the year, Advanced Micro Devices stock is on Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White's list of names that have attracted the highest weekly options volume within the past two weeks. According to this data, 3,140,897 calls and 1,778,606 puts were exchanged in this two-week time period. The 7/29 90-strike call stood out as the most popular contract by far, followed by the weekly 7/22 90-strike call.
More broadly, options traders have favored puts. This is per the security's 50-day put/call volume ratio over at the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Cboe Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX) that ranks in the 87th percentile of its annual range. In other words, these traders have had a healthier-than usual appetite for long puts in the last 10 weeks.
These options traders are in luck, too, as now seems like an ideal time to weigh in on AMD's next move higher. Advanced Micro Devices stock has usually outperformed volatility expectations, per its Schaeffer's Volatility Scorecard (SVS) ranking of 88 out of 100.
It's worth noting that Susquehanna today cut its price objective on the equity to $115 from $120. However, analysts remain optimistic overall. Specifically, the 12-month consensus price target of $128.11 is a 32.4% premium to the shares' current perch, and 18 of 23 covering brokerages still recommend a "buy" or better rating.

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. 'Will Fare Much Better' Than Intel - Susquehanna
By: Investing.com | August 1, 2022
Ahead of Advanced Micro Devices' (NASDAQ:AMD) earnings report on Tuesday, August 2, a Susquehanna analyst stated that despite Intel's (NASDAQ:INTC) challenged print, they believe "AMD will fare much better."
In a note to investors, the analyst said the firm remains bullish on AMD, maintaining a Positive rating on the stock but lowering the price target from $120 to $115.
"While AMD reiterated their 2022 guidance at their Analyst Day, we believe the outlook (particularly for PC) may have weakened since. While AMD PC may show signs of weakness at the edges, we expect a different narrative for AMD server," wrote the analyst.
Susquehanna expects second-quarter numbers to be in-line, but sees potentially larger risks for the third quarter, "but nothing similar to the magnitude of Intel's large miss."
Elsewhere, a UBS analyst said in a note that they expect results and guidance on the server side to be "very strong."
However, "a materially weaker PC environment likely drives AMD to take a more conservative tack and trim the full year - potentially to up ~50% v current +60% Y/Y," explained the analyst, who maintained a Neutral rating and $110 price target on AMD shares.
"Though it likely cuts full year due to elevated customer inventory and weakening demand, the picture for INTC is much worse because some large customers appear to have bought ahead of price increases, which actually sucked some demand forward. The dynamic for AMD seems more straightforward," he added.
AMD shares are trading 3.5% higher Monday.

At the close today, AMD closed with a market cap of $153.1 billion.
INTC closed with a market cap of $148.5 billion.
To my knowledge this is the first time that AMD‘s market cap has exceeded Intel’s.
My guess is that Pat Gelsinger is not anywhere close to being an Andy Grove.
Pat seems to overpromise then under deliver. From yesterday‘s conference call, I got the impression that he still believes that Intel is superior to all his competitors in all regards. I suspect that he’s going to have a very difficult time catching up with Nvidia or with AMD. … Let alone surpass either of them.

The Better Semiconductor Stock to Buy: AMD vs. QCOM
By: StockNews.com | July 27, 2022
While many analysts expect the ongoing chip shortage to continue through the following year, the surging demand for advanced and efficient chips and rising investments to ramp up production should drive the semiconductor industry’s growth. Moreover, the U.S. Senate voted in favor of the $280 billion CHIPS-Plus package yesterday to bolster domestic semiconductor manufacturing, which should bode well for the industry.
Investors’ interest in this space is evident from the SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF’s (XSD) 3.4% gains over the past month versus the SPDR S&P 500 Trust ETF’s (SPY) 0.2% returns. According to Deloitte, the global semiconductor chip industry is expected to reach about $600 billion in 2022. So, Qualcomm Incorporated (QCOM - Get Rating) and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD - Get Rating) should stay afloat amid the volatile market conditions.
QCOM is a multinational semiconductor and telecommunications equipment company that develops and delivers products and services based on CDMA technology used in digital wireless communications equipment and satellite ground stations. It operates through Qualcomm CDMA Technologies (QCT); Qualcomm Technology Licensing (QTL); and Qualcomm Strategic Initiatives (QSI) segments.
On the other hand, AMD manufactures microprocessors, chipsets, GPUs, server and embedded processors, semi-custom SoC products, and technology for game consoles and offers assembly, testing, and packaging services.
It serves OEMs, ODMs, public cloud service providers, system integrators, independent distributors, online retailers, and add-in-board manufacturers through its direct sales force, independent distributors, and sales representatives.
While AMD lost 30.7% over the past nine months, QCOM surged 13.7%. QCOM is a clear winner with 19.3% gains over the past month versus AMD’s 2.1% loss. But which stock is a better buy now? Let’s find out.
Latest Developments
On July 19, 2022, QCOM unveiled the latest additions to its suite of premium wearable platforms, Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon W5 Gen 1. With highly integrated packaging, these platforms advance ultra-low power based on 4nm process technology and deliver breakthrough performance with extended battery life and premium user experiences.
Moreover, these will help manufacturers scale, differentiate, and develop products faster in the continuously growing and segmenting wearables industry.
On June 21, 2022, AMD announced the Ryzen Embedded R2000 Series, second-generation mid-range SoC processors optimized for various industrial and robotics systems, machine vision, IoT, and thin-client equipment.
This new series is expected to witness high demand in the coming months, delivering significant performance uplift, optimized power, and better graphics than the prior generation.
Recent Financial Results
For the fiscal 2022 second quarter ended March 27, 2022, QCOM’s non-GAAP revenues increased 40.8% year-over-year to $11.16 billion. The company’s non-GAAP operating income came in at $4.37 billion, up 63.7% from the year-ago period.
Its non-GAAP net income came in at $3.66 billion, representing a 67.6% rise from the prior-year period. QCOM’s non-GAAP EPS was $3.21, indicating a 69% year-over-year improvement. As of March 27, 2022, the company had $7.17 billion in cash and cash equivalents.
AMD’s revenue for its fiscal 2022 first quarter ended March 26, 2022, increased 70.9% year-over-year to $5.89 billion. The company’s non-GAAP gross profit came in at $3.10 billion, up 95.2% from the year-ago period. Its non-GAAP operating income came in at $1.84 billion for the quarter, indicating a 141.1% rise from the prior-year period.
While its non-GAAP net income increased 147.5% year-over-year to $1.59 billion, its non-GAAP EPS grew 117.3% to $1.13. The company had cash and cash equivalents of $4.74 billion as of March 26, 2022.
Past and Expected Financial Performance
Over the past three years, QCOM’s EBITDA, net income, and EPS have increased at CAGRs of 40.6%, 66.4%, and 75.1%.
Analysts expect QCOM’s EPS to grow 46.4% in fiscal 2022, ending September 30, 2022, and 4.8% in fiscal 2023. The company’s revenue is expected to grow 33.1% year-over-year in fiscal 2022 and 8.2% in fiscal 2023. Its EPS is expected to grow at 14.3% per annum over the next five years.
Over the past three years, AMD’s EBITDA, net income, and EPS have increased at CAGRs of 102.4%, 131.9%, and 120.4%.
AMD’s EPS is expected to rise 57.3% year-over-year in fiscal 2022, ending December 31, 2022, and 11.8% in fiscal 2023. The company’s revenue is expected to grow 59.5% year-over-year in fiscal 2022 and 12.5% in fiscal 2023. Its EPS is expected to grow at a 28.1% rate per annum over the next five years.
Valuation
In terms of forward EV/EBITDA, AMD is currently trading at 16.06x, 76.3% higher than QCOM’s 9.11x. In terms of non-GAAP forward P/E, QCOM’s 11.95x compares with AMD’s 19.58x.

Furthermore, QCOM’s ROE, ROA, and ROTC of 107.6%, 19.7%, and 30.7% compare with AMD’s 11%, 6.4%, and 7.6%, respectively.

The Bull and Bear Case for Investing in AMD
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | July 27, 2022
• The Bull Case for Investing in AMD
Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) is one of the most hotly-debated stocks in the semiconductor industry. My colleague Sam Quirke at MarketBeat recently outlined some arguments for and against investing in the stock, which included the fact that some analysts trimmed their price targets while still leaving a considerable amount of upside potential. Other comments in the article included that the stock could be hurting from China's lockdowns and reduced demand for consumer products such as computers and smartphones.
In this article, we'll further explore the bull and bear cases for investing in AMD based on the stock's key financial ratios and let the reader decide if it's worth the risk.
THE BULL CASE FOR INVESTING IN AMD
Analyst ratings for the stock are mostly positive for the last 90 days. Out of 39 analysts, 19 rated AMD as a strong buy, and 7 rated it as a buy, while the rest rated the company as a hold with 1 strong sell rating. The consensus price target for the stock stands at $122.82, with a high of $200 and a low of $63. This shows that analysts could seem to be bullish on the stock in general. It should also be noted that over the last five years, analysts have been accurate in their forecasting for the stock with a low margin of error, except until very recently, in 2022, when the market rotated out of technology stocks.
Another consideration for this stock is its performance against its sector for growth and profitability. The company's FWD revenue growth stands at 44.59%, while the sector median is 14.72. AMD also outperforms the sector median for YoY revenue growth as it stands at 65.26% compared with 20.56%. AMD's margins are strong compared with the median. The company's EBITDA margin of 25.74% compares favorably with the sector's margin of 13.14%.
THE BEAR CASE FOR INVESTING IN AMD
One key area where AMD underperforms the sector median is its valuation. The company's FWD P/E ratio is 27.36 compared with the sector median of 24.52. This could be interpreted as the company's prospects being better than those in the sector median, which warrants a higher share price. It could be viewed that the company is more expensive than its peers.
There are other valuation ratios that show the stock is more expensive on a relative basis, especially when examining how much it costs to buy one unit of the company's sales. AMD's FWD Price/Sales ratio is at 5.41 compared to the sector median of 2.82, or almost twice as expensive.
AMD VS. INTEL CORPORATION
Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) is AMD's classical competitor and is a key benchmark for the company. The companies have a similar market cap with AMD's market cap of 141.86B and 160.11B, respectively. One thing to note is that Intel has a significantly higher number of employees than AMD at 121,100 compared with 15,500. The consensus of Wall St is also divided on the firms, as AMD has a rating of Buy while Intel holds the rating of Hold.
Over the last five years, AMD returned a significantly higher value to investors than intel. AMD returned 520.41%, while Intel returned 28.43%. YTD, both companies are down. AMD is down -39.17%, while Intel is down -22.78%.
A big difference between the stocks as we head into a possible recession is that Intel offers a dividend while AMD does not. Intel's dividend rate stands at $1.43 and has an FWD yield of 3.73%. It should be noted that Intel has 8 consecutive years of dividend growth.
AMD is relatively more expensive than Intel on an FWD P/E basis. AMD's FWD P/W stands at 27.36 while AMD's ratio is 10.32.

Morgan Stanley Sees Risk to AMD's Gaming Business, Says NVIDIA Consensus 'Too Cautious'
By: Investing.com | July 18, 2022
In a note to investors on the chip market, Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore said they are positive about the prospects for the CHIPS Act and it will be a notable positive driver, with over $50 billion in federal money subsidizing spending across multiple years.
"Further, the heavy subsidization of the Global Foundries fab in France - by our estimates roughly 50 cents on the dollar - demonstrates that this is a global phenomenon," said Moore.
Focusing on Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) and Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA), Moore explained that discussions with clients focused on themes such as how they are estimating the impact of crypto mining on the GPU market, what the current secondary market card pricing means for Nvidia and AMD, and how they expect the impact of the two prior dynamics show up in earnings reports.
"As we have written, we arrived at our estimates by analyzing the total hashing power that was added to the ethereum network in 2021, from the beginning of the year to the annual peak, estimating an average hashing power contribution per card, and then multiplying by the ASP of such cards, but only NVIDIA's and AMD's take, which is considerably lower than the final card price," said Moore.
He added that the "math would then suggest total GPUs for crypto drove about $2.6mm of revenue last year; of that, roughly $600mm was the Nvidia specialty 'crypto mining processors', implying roughly $2bn for the gaming product in particular. This number peaked at about $1 bn in 4q, and declined from a run-rate perspective 50-60% through May, when we started to see the hash rate contracting."
Morgan Stanley expects NVIDIA to have the more outsized exposure to the crypto market, given their higher overall market share in gaming GPU in general. He also said that most investors agree with their more positive view that "NVIDIA's data center business will see less impact from cloud digestion next year. Shorter term, we think that consensus might actually be too cautious around the current quarter."
For AMD, they see a risk to the gaming business but remain "enthused by the company's market share gains in CPU, and believe the combined growth and profitability profiles of the data center and Xilinx (NASDAQ:XLNX) businesses mean existing estimates should be achievable even in a weak gaming GPU cycle."

The story for much of the year on Wall Street has been one of downward estimate revisions. A slowing economy, the very real possibility of a recession and consumers’ shrinking spending power in the face of rising inflation have all been reasons for lowering expectations.
And now another downward revision has been added to the increasingly long list - for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).
Due to near-term headwinds, mostly coming from the direction of the PC market, BMO analyst Ambrish Srivastava has lowered his 2022 and 2023 EPS estimates from the prior $4.40 and $4.90 to $4.30 and $4.68, respectively. Both are now below the Street’s outlook of $4.36 and $4.80.
However, near-term headwinds aside, Srivastava is extremely bullish on all things AMD. In fact, the current problems in the PC market can even be brushed aside, given the promising outlook elsewhere.
“We are hearing of continued momentum from our work around the industry, and see AMD's server share continuing to expand,” the analyst said.
Much has been made of how AMD has managed to close the gap on its once far bigger rival Intel in the CPU market, while it has been astutely managed by CEO Lisa Su. Part of AMD’s success in recent years has resulted from the company taking advantage of Intel’s missteps. Indeed, Srivastava sees a path to “sustained share gains” against Intel but not because of more mistakes on Intel’s part.
“Our sense is that with the several key architectural innovations the company has made, along with rolling out a lineup of products that has enabled the company to not only close the gap but get ahead in many cases, AMD's credibility with customers has continued to climb,” the 5-star analyst explained. “This should enable AMD to gain a larger share of the wallet, especially on the faster growing cloud data center TAM.”
Another enticing aspect concerns AMD’s valuation. Like others, AMD shares have not been spared in 2022’s brutal market – down 46% year-to-date. But this now offers a “favorable valuation and an attractive reward/risk profile.”
As such, based on the above, Srivastava raises his rating from Market Perform (i.e., Neutral) to Outperform (i.e., Buy) while the price target is also increased – from $100 to $115. Should the figure be met, investors are looking at 12-month upside of 48%. (To watch Srivastava’s track record, click here)
Srivastava is hardly the only analyst to come out bullish for AMD; the stock has a 19 to 8 split in favor of Buys reviews over Holds, giving it a Moderate Buy consensus rating. The shares are priced at $78.88 and their $130.65 average target suggests room for ~66% appreciation next year.

PC Demand Is Sagging. Intel and AMD Head Into a ‘Much Weaker’ Second Half
By: Barron's | July 11, 2022
With demand for personal computers rapidly decelerating, there is trouble ahead for both Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, which provide most of the microprocessors used in laptops and desktops.
Barclays semiconductor analyst Blayne Curtis warned in a research note Monday that June-quarter notebook production from Taiwan-based contract manufacturers missed expectations, but adds that the bigger issue for the PC-component companies is a “much weaker” than expected outlook for the second half of 2022. He points to cautious comments from the contract manufacturers, noting that they see a flat-to-down year, but that a double-digit decline seems likely.
Curtis now expects full-year 2022 notebook production to drop17%, down from a previously forecast 12% decline. Intel made cautious comments about the demand outlook at an investment conference last month.
Curtis views the situation as “yet another negative data point” for Intel (ticker: INTC) and Advanced Micro (AMD). The analyst reduced estimates on both companies and warned that there could be additional cuts to come. “We just see no reason to own these names until the size of the correction is better understood,” he writes.
For Intel, he repeats his Underweight rating, trimmed his target to $40, from $45. For AMD, he maintains his Equal Weight rating, with a new target of $85, down from $115. For both Intel and AMD, the analyst now has below-consensus estimates for the June and September quarters, and for both 2022 and 2023.
The market research firm IDC on Monday reported that worldwide PC shipments were down 15.3% in the second quarter, to 71.3 million units. That includes estimated year-over-year unit declines of 27.6% for HP Inc. (HPQ), 22.5% for Apple (AAPL), 12.1% for market leader Lenovo, and 5.3% for Dell Technologies (DELL), which has lower exposure than others to the weakening consumer laptop market.
“Fears over a recession continue to mount and weaken demand across segments,” Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC’s Mobile Device trackers, said in a statement. “Consumer demand for PCs has weakened in the near term and is at risk of perishing in the long term as consumers become more cautious about their spending and once again grow accustomed to computing across device types such as phones and tablets. Meanwhile, commercial demand has been more robust although it has also declined as businesses delay purchases.”
Intel shares were down 1.13%, to $37.56, while AMD was off 1.83%, to $77.90.

Stay Away from AMD and Intel Shares - Barclays
By: Investing.com | July 11, 2022
Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis reiterated an Equal Weight rating on AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) and Underweight on Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) amid a “much weaker 2H outlook.”
While headwinds facing Intel are well-understood, Curtis says AMD is not immune to the slowdown despite the company reiterating its full-year guidance recently. Curtis notes corrections that will likely take place in several end markets, such as PC, Gaming, Semi-custom, servers, Xilinx, etc.
“We are taking down estimates for both companies, but they may have to come down even further as these cuts are just starting. For both, we just see no reason to own these names until the size of the correction is better understood. When we downgraded AMD, we pointed to 2024 as the real make or break year for INTC as that is when they will have first products on Intel 4/3. It does appear that Intel’s roadmaps continue to slip to the right with Granite Rapids (Intel 3) and Meteor Lake (Intel 4) due out at the end of 2023,” Curtis told clients in a note.
The analyst is telling clients to stay away from buying a dip in AMD shares. A new price target on AMD stock is $85 per share, down from $115.
Intel stock price target is cut to $40 from $45.
AMD and INTC shares are down 1.5% and 0.7%, respectively, today.

Whether you or I use INTC or not is irrelevant. This is no longer Andy Grove's company. Since Andy retired, NVDA has grown to more than 2.25 times the market cap of INTC, AMD had come to within 5B of Intc's market cap and is now about 20B less. In Andy's day, they were totally insignificant and he kept them alive to help ensure that the Antitrust folk didn't carve his company into ineffective pieces.
INTC had always been the leading edge company, letting their "competitors" catch up, then almost immediately leapfrogging to the next generation technology, and doing so before AMD or NVDA could recoup much of the investment that it took to catch up with INTC.
INTC seems to have totally underestimated the foundry threat. TSM is at least 2 generations ahead of INTC and continuing to increase the gap. So INTC's chips will continue to be more costly, require more power, more cooling and more space than those being made for their competitors by TSM.
While I'm no longer current with the industry, I suspect that INTC's only chance of catching up would be by hiring several of TSM's best fab engineers (with their current strategy of having their own fabs).
Buying the skills and knowledge that they now lack may not be possible. The best engineers are unlikely to leave a very successful company to go to one that is struggling and failing.
They should have recognized that their industry was going through another stage in its continuous revolution a couple decades ago.
They didn't. Now, I suspect that the only way that they may regain a leadership role is if they sit down with TSM and negotiate the best deal they can for TSM to provide Fab Services located in the USA for INTC. I doubt that any such deal could be crafted that would allow them to keep the US Gov't funding earmarked for building their own leading edge fab.
So I don't see any way that INTC will catch up let alone leapfrog any time soon, if ever.
They may still have the ability to design the best chips in some areas
but they're so far behind, I don't see them delivering anything that competes with products from NVDA, AMD and others any time soon.
They've locked themselves into a losing position.
IMO,
Ian
I don’t use AMD, only Intel. GL

Looking at fundamentals, AMD has steadily taken share from its competitors, especially INTC, while improving its margins. It continues to improve its balance sheet. INTC continues failing at getting anywhere close to producing the 5nm chips that TSM offers ADM.
In the long term, AMD's price will resume going up. I have no idea when that will happen - it could be after the next earnings report or it may be after the Fed regains control over inflation, and Russia is forced to behave as a civilized nation rather than a genocidal terrorist. I have no idea how low its price will go, but I intend to stay in and enjoy the ride once it starts moving up again.

AMD Stock Approaches Key Support Amid Fall to New Lows
By: TheStreet | June 30, 2022
• Advanced Micro Devices stock is making new 52-week lows. Is it time to buy?
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is declining to new 52-week lows and is now down 54% from its all-time high just just seven months ago.
It’s been a brutal wake-up call for investors, as they’ve seen the value of many tech stocks erode so far in 2022.
It’s been the worst first-half start for the S&P 500 in five decades and now fears of a recession are pressuring semiconductor stocks even more. Nvidia (NVDA), Intel (INTC) and others are all feeling the pinch.
For now, Micron’s (MU) earnings report after the close remains a bit of a wildcard for semi-stock investors, as it sits on a critical support level.
Regarding AMD stock specifically, the valuation has been pummeled, as the stock price has been more than halved while earnings estimates remain steady — at least so far.
To some degree, investors are likely beginning to look at this as a value stock at sub-19 times earnings. That’s even as short-term headwinds may persist. Let’s look at the chart.
Trading AMD Stock
Weekly chart of AMD stock.
Chart courtesy of TrendSpider.com
In late April, AMD stock did a great job finding support at the 61.8% retracement and bouncing back to the $110 area.
For bulls to maintain momentum, I thought it was important for it to hold above $100 and the 10-week moving average. However, AMD failed to do so and has now traded lower in three of the last four weeks.
Amid the recent decline, shares broke back below the 61.8% retracement and are hitting new lows as we speak. That has me keep a very close eye on the $73 to $75 area.
I don’t know that it will be support, as AMD stock may want to trade down into the mid- and upper-$60s.
However, in the $73 to $75 zone, AMD has a big level of former support. That area was support for several quarters spanning from 2020 to 2021. At the very least, I would expect some sort of minor bounce from this area.
If we get it and AMD stock can reclaim $80, then recent prior support at $85 may be in play.
Regardless of whether AMD stock bounces from this zone, it may still end up breaking in the future — particularly if it remains in a downtrend.
If that’s the case, investors can keep an eye on the rising 200-week moving average and the 78.6% retracement near $64.
From an investing perspective, there may certainly be value in AMD stock down at current levels. From a trading perspective, we need to follow the levels and respect support and resistance. Market participants should know which approach suits them best before entering a position.
