Powerful moments stir emotions at Paralympic Games
Tue Sep 28, 2:04 PM ET
AFP Features
ATHENS (AFP) - As the Athens Paralympics drew to a close 1,001 moments, each more poignant and powerful than the last, rise to the surface in the search for the defining image of these unforgettable Games.
A journalist sifting through them is caught between competing directives.
The nearly 4,000 elite disabled athletes who competed here in 19 sports wanted to be recognized -- win or lose -- for their sporting achievements: "focus on the sport, not the disability" was the official refrain.
Yet most media professionals arrived in the Greek capital with orders to mine the "human interest" angle, to tell moving stories of triumph over adversity.
In the end, though, these two visions were complementary.
So what were the candidates for that defining moment?
Perhaps it is blind runner Henry Wanyoike of Kenya, fresh from breaking his own world record in the 10,000 meter race, answering journalists' questions while fiddling absent-mindedly with the tether that connects him at that moment and on the track with his soul-mate and sighted shadow-runner Joseph Kibunja Gachui.
Kenyan Henry Wanyoike(R) and his guide in the 5000m men (T11, blind) at the third International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championship in Villeneuve-d'Ascq
(AFP/File/Francois Lo Presti)
Born in the same village a stone's throw apart, fate brought them together when Joseph was so inspired by Henry's victory in the Sydney Paralympics in 2000 that he decided, against the odds, to become his guide even though he had never run a race in his life.
Or it might be the 100-meter heat in which 14-year-old Mareena Karim of Afghanistan (news - web sites) took 18.85 agonizingly long seconds to complete the race, coming in dead last, before bursting into tears in the arms of a teammate.
The very fact she competed was a double miracle: just getting here from her
Or there is Spanish swimmer Xavier Torres climbing out of the pool after taking silver in an individual medley. Torres is missing both hands and his right forearm, and both his legs have been amputated above the knee. Even with his residual limbs, he can walk. And oh my, can he swim.
But here's the moment: after he got out of the pool, looking like a statue of a Greek god ravaged by time, he slipped on a pair of artificial legs and strode away, in every sense, six feet tall.
One thinks, also, of 21-year-old swimmer Doramitzi Gonzalez, also an amputee, on the phone with Mexican President Vincente Fox after one of her three gold medals. "Mr. President," she had the courage to say after graciously accepting his congratulations, "do not forget that we are Mexicans too."
Then there is Henrik Jorgen Jorgensen of Denmark, who excels in what is surely the sport least loved by journalists at these Games: boccia, a Paralympic variant of petanque in which competitors try to position steel balls on a dirt surface.
Beset with cerebral palsy due to a lack of oxygen at birth, Jorgensen has very limited use of his hands and arms and actually throws the steel balls -- nestled against his chest in outwardly-facing cupped hands -- with his body. He arcs his back over the rear of his wheelchair, looking skyward, and launches the ball like a human catapult. It usually lands within an inch or two of its intended target.
And how could one forget the blistering speed of South Africa's 17-year-old war-torn country was supremely difficult. One can only imagine how she felt when organizers told her upon arrival, before reversing their decision, that her disability -- she lost half of one foot and all the toes on her other as an infant -- was "not severe enough" to qualify for competition.
Oscar Pistorius, mounted on two prosthetic legs, as he pulverizes the world record in the 200 meter dash for amputees in a time within a few tenths of a second of the fastest able-bodied athletes his age.
Finally, though, one thinks of another moment, outside the stadium and away from the competition. It is an intimate moment, and must remain anonymous.
Two young athletes side-by-side in their wheelchairs, facing in opposite direction, as if on a love seat. It is a sparkling Athens night, the competition is over, the crowds have gone home.
The athletes embrace, a lover's embrace, the most natural moment in the world.

Paralympics Scrap Closing Celebrations After Crash
World - Reuters
Mon Sep 27,11:24 AM ET !
By Karolos Grohmann
ATHENS (Reuters) - The Athens Paralympics canceled celebrations at its closing ceremony after seven schoolchildren traveling to watch the event died in a bus crash on Monday.
The school bus, on its way to Athens from central Greece, collided with a truck. Thirty people were injured, 26 of them pupils in their mid-teens, police said. Of 41 people on the bus, only four escaped unscathed.
"The Paralympics Organizing Committee announces the cancellation of celebrations at the closing ceremony (on Tuesday) ... due to the tragic accident," a statement said.
Organizers had planned a visually stunning celebration for the end of the Games, in which disabled athletes compete.
Instead they will go ahead with just a brief athletes' parade, a speech by the International Paralympic Committee chief and the handing over of the flag to Beijing, host of the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
A minute's silence was observed on Monday at all sports venues in remembrance of the victims.
Thousands of Greek children on school trips have come to Athens to watch the Paralympics, which started two weeks after the end of the Athens 2004 Games and have involved more than 4,000 disabled athletes from 140 nations. The event is held every four years at the same venue as the Olympics.
Some athletes taking part in the Paralympics are themselves victims of road accidents.
Rescue workers blocked traffic on the country's main north-south highway after the bus coming from the town of Trikala crashed at Kammena Vourla, some 110 miles north of Athens.
They pulled out the dead and injured from the mangled bus as others cleaned pools of blood and oil from the road.
"The situation inside the bus was absolute horror, blood everywhere," a rescue worker told Reuters.
Hospital officials said two of the injured were in serious condition.
The government said all schools would be closed on Wednesday as a tribute to the dead and an investigation into the crash was under way.
Last year more than 80 people died and about 200 were injured in accidents in the same area, one of the most dangerous stretches of the highway.
The toll included the country's worst road accident in decades, in which 21 schoolchildren died when a truck carrying wooden planks crashed into a bus in northern Greece, decapitating most of them.

Closing Ceremony artistic part cancelled due to accident
27 Sept. 2004 16:29:
ATHENS, 27 September - The ATHENS 2004 Organising Committee (ATHOC) has decided to cancel the planned entertainment portions of the Closing Ceremony of the XIIth Paralympic Games, due to the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of high school students who were traveling to Athens to attend the Paralympic Games.
The Closing Ceremony will only entail the protocol segments (entry of athletes, Speech by the IPC President Mr. Phil CRAVEN, handover of the Paralympic Flag to the Beijing Organising Committee, extinguishing of the Flame).
Ticket holders who wish to attend the revised program are welcome to do so.
Ticket holders who decide not to attend the Closing Ceremony will be refunded the amount they have paid, by presenting their ticket(s) through a procedure that will be announced by ATHOC in the following days.

Seven schoolchildren die in car crash en route to Paralympic Games
27 Sept. 2004 14:31
ATHENS, 27 September - Seven schoolchildren were killed and over 30 were injured, Monday, when a bus carrying Senior High School students to watch the Paralympic Games collided with a truck on the Athens-Lamia E75 National Highway.
The bus had left the village of Farkadona, near Trikkala, in Thessaly, central Greece (some 300 kilometres north of Athens) early Monday morning to bring the students to the capital for the second-to-last day of the Paralympic Games. The accident happened at 10:00 hours, between the towns of Kammena Vourla and Aghios Konstantinos, in the Prefecture of Phthiotis.
Most of the injured were admitted in the hospital of the city of Lamia, while a student with severed limb was transferred by helicopter to Larissa.
According to Traffic Police sources the causes of the accident are still uncertain, pending an investigation.
The 60-year-old truck driver and the 22-year-old bus driver are being held for questioning at the Kammena Vourla Police Station.
The stretch known as the "Maliakos Horseshoe", an 180-degree curve around the Maliakos Gulf, is considered the most dangerous part of the E75 Highway and has been the site of several serious accidents in the past.
The bus was part of a convoy of over 40 buses transporting students from villages of Trikkala to the Paralympic Games. Following the accident most of the buses returned home.

Million of viewers enjoy ATHENS 2004 Paralympic Games on TV
ATHENS, 27 September - Broadcasters report that the ATHENS 2004 Paralympic Games are being watched by a record number of viewers.
Although the live broadcast of the Opening Ceremony coincided with the middle of the night in some parts of the world,10 million Chinese and 8 million Japanese

Said, IPC spokesperson Miriam WILKENS:
"Almost 50 broadcasters are present in Athens - this is a new record and a development, which confirms that there has been a good growth in interest for the Paralympic Games since the Sydney 2000 Paralympics.
We expect to continue this positive trend for Torino in 2006 and Beijing in 2008."

Thank YOU for taking the time to do it.. love the sail boat pics... very nice.
Thanks, Merci.
This kind of competition is different enough to make it interesting,
even thou there isn't alot of interest by the media.
I like good quality photos better anyway - they tell their own story.

combining elements of rugby, basketball, ice hockey and american football
RULES for Wheelchair Rugby
About Wheelchair Rugby
A relatively new sport which debuted in Sydney, but one which has got a lot of support worldwide over the last few years.
Also known as Quad Rugby it is played using a volleyball, on a standard basketball court, by 4 players per team (a squad of 12). Players are graded according to level of disability from 0.5 (approximately equal to a C5 tetraplegic) to 3.5 (least impaired) and the team fielded must total 8.0 points or less - similar idea to wheelchair basketball. The teams are not gender specific.
Goals are scored by crossing the opponents baseline whilst holding the ball. Each match consistes of 4 quarters of 8 minutes (clock stops when ball is out of play). Key rules are the ball must be passed or dribbled every 10 seconds, within 15 seconds the ball must enter the opponents half, infringements are penalized by use of the 1 minute sin-bin, ball turnover or awarding of a goal. There are no restrictions on amount of pushes, chair contact is allowed but not personal contact. With timeouts etc a typical game will last about an hour, in Athens in the event of a draw 3 minutes of extra time is played.

Goalball Rules
Played by blind and visually impaired athletes. An official Paralympic sport since 1980 and played competitively in more than 100 countries.
Teams consist of 3 players with 3 substitutes (from classification B1, B2 or B3 with eyes masked to ensure vision equality) propelling a ball (which contains bells) by hand only, on an indoor volleyball court.
The objective is to pass the ball over the opposing sides end-line, thereby scoring a goal. The opposing team can use their entire body to try to block. Verbal instructions and the sound of the ball are crucial orientation guides for players.
When players hear the ball coming towards their end of the court, they dive, usually head-first, towards it hoping to block it with their body. If all three players miss the ball and it goes past the back line, it is considered a goal.
Each match is of 2 halves of 10 minutes, with overtime of 3 minutes each way in the event of a draw. 3 timeouts of 45 seconds. The team with the most goals wins the game
