Day nine of the ATHENS 2004 Paralympic Games



In 26 September, ninth day of ATHENS 2004 Paralympic Games, 12 sports were held, eight of which included finals. It was the last competition day for Wheelchair Tennis, Goalball, Equestrian and Archery.

In Athletics, twenty two exciting finals took place. The day started at 08:00 with the Men’s and Women’s Marathon. The competitions continued with the evening session in the Olympic Stadium, where finals in Men’s and Women’s Javelin Throw, Men’s 100m, 200m and 1500m, Men’s Long Jump, Men’s Discus, Women’s Shot Put, Men's Triple Jump and Women’s 100 and 200m took place.

In Swimming, this was the most exciting day in the Olympic Aquatic Centre, 5b4 with 58 events been held, including 18 finals in the afternoon session. Once again, spectators cheered athletes to great performances.

In Wheelchair Tennis, Netherland’s Maaike SMIT and Esther VERGEER were the winners in Women’s Doubles, Nick TAYLOR and David WAGNER (USA) in the Mixed Doubles - Quad and Robin AMMERLAAN (NED) in Men's Singles.

The Goalball competitions came to an end today, with the Men’s and Women’s finals. In the Men’s event gold medal went to Denmark and in Women’s to Canada.

In Equestrian, the competition schedule was completed with the Team finals. G. Britain was the Champion; Germany won silver medal and The Netherlands bronze.

The sixth and last day of Archery started with Women's Team - Open, where the G. Britain’s team was the gold medallist, and was continued later in the afternoon with the Men’s event, where Korea was crowned Paralympic Champion.

In Powerlifting, finals were held in Men's -82.50 kg cat 5a4 egory, where Mohammed Khamis KHALAF from the United Arab Emirates won gold, and in Men’s -90kg category, where Korea’s Jong Chul PARK was the Paralympic Champion.

Finally, in the Mixed Individuals finals in Boccia, Yuk Wing LEUNG (HKG) won gold medal in Class BC4, Canada’s Paul GAUTHIER in Class BC3, Spain’s Jose Javier CURTO in Class BC2 and Joao Paulo FERNANDES (POR) was the Paralympic gold medallist in Class BC1.
