Trump’s Vision of the Economy vs. the Actual Economy

David Gray / Reuters

At the first debate, he conjured up an economic dystopia that was largely a fantasy.

Derek Thompson
Sep 27, 2016

“Our jobs are fleeing the country,” Donald Trump said on Monday night at the first presidential debate. “Our country’s in deep trouble,” he continued, blaming NAFTA and U.S. trade policies for destroying the Rust Belt and shipping jobs to Mexico and China.

Extending a message that he delivered at the Republican National Convention and across the country, Trump painted the U.S. economy as a hellscape, where foreign interests descend on American cities like demons in a Bosch painting and leave a trail of misery in their wake.

But Trump’s dire portrait differs from most statistical snapshots of the U.S. economy. Hours after the first presidential debate, the Conference Board [ https://www.conference-board.org/data/consumerconfidence.cfm ], a business research association, reported that consumer confidence had reached its highest level since the recession. Three weeks ago, the Bureau of Labor Statistics [ http://www.bls.gov/ ] reported that the U.S. has added private sector jobs for its record-setting 77th consecutive month. The unemployment rate has been at 5 percent or below for the past 11 months. Two weeks ago, the U.S. Census [ http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2016/09/13/middle_class_incomes_shot_up_in_2015.html ] reported that real median household incomes grew at the fastest pace on record, with incomes rising fastest among the poorest Americans. The average price of gas [ http://www.gasbuddy.com/Charts ] has been under $3 for almost two years. Meanwhile, President Barack Obama’s approval rating is at its highest level of his second term.

How could Trump possibly attract near-majority support in the presidential election despite brandishing an economic message that runs so counter to the average American’s experience? There are a few plausible explanations.

First, perhaps Trump is effectively speaking to the private concerns of many Americans whose angst isn’t reflected in the national economic figures. After all, statistics like the unemployment rate and wage growth might disguise some regional inequality. Residents of Denver, Seattle, and Portland are seeing unprecedented housing booms, but in, say, Ohio, where Trump is leading, rural incomes are growing slowly, Cleveland's workforce is still shrinking [ http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/05/the-economy-is-great-the-economy-is-terrible/481020/ ], and Toledo lost 4 percent of its businesses in the first four years of the recovery.

But despite its simple allure, this explanation is far from dispositive. Although Trump is leading in some states that have been gutted by the demise of manufacturing or coal, polling research has not been able to find a clear correlation between local job losses and support for Trump. In fact, some studies found that Trump supporters are even less likely to live [ http://www.vox.com/2016/8/12/12454250/donald-trump-gallup-trade-immigration-study ] in areas that lost jobs to trade.

That leads to a second explanation, which is that many Trump supporters are drawn not exclusively to his economic message, but rather to his particular brand of nativist bluster, which often conflates racial and economic anxieties. There is considerable evidence that racism predicts Trump support better than any economic indicator. But cultural attitudes do not exist in a psychological vacuum. Several studies of racial attitudes toward immigration and welfare [ http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/05/donald-trump-and-the-twilight-of-white-america/482655/ ] have found that the mere perception of economic scarcity can inflame racial tensions, as the white majority fears that their taxable income will go to support minority families that they consider different and undeserving.

Finally, there is a third possibility that is more sociological than economic. Perhaps many Trump supporters think that the world is getting worse even though many of them would report that their own lives are improving. In other words, if asked “How are you doing?” many say, “Alright.” But if asked “How is the country doing?” they’ll say, “very poorly.” This is how one might have a country where consumers are optimistic about their own lives (as the statistics seem to indicate) but depressed about the state of the rest of the country (as Trump’s popularity might suggest). Why might they come to hold that belief? Cultural and economic attitudes are leaky. It is conceivable that many members of this group, motivated primarily by racist attitudes, have conflated their fears about the future of U.S. demographics with their fears of the future of the economy.

In sociology, there is a concept called “pluralistic ignorance [ http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2015/01/sex-and-drugs-and-high-school-but-also-social-psychology/384339/ ],” which refers to when a group’s public attitude differs from their private experience. Recall the Hans Christian Andersen story about a royal court that claims to see invisible clothes on an emperor while each individual privately sees him naked. Or, for a more contemporary example, imagine a fraternity where every young man publicly disparages women but privately considers such behavior to be boorish.

Pluralistic ignorance would help explain what is otherwise a paradox: Trump supporters are more likely [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/09/12/hillary-clinton-repeats-a-common-myth-about-trumps-supporters/ ] to express negative views about the economy, but people suffering from economic hardship are less likely to vote for Trump [ http://www.gallup.com/opinion/polling-matters/193898/economic-hardship-favorable-views-trump.aspx ]. This can be true only in a scenario in which millions of Trump supporters who are personally seeing decent economic conditions are nonetheless convinced that the economy is terrible for everybody else.

“We have come back from [the] abyss, and it has not been easy,” Hillary Clinton said on Monday night. “So we’re now on the precipice of having a potentially much better economy.” Indeed, there is no doubt that Americans should look forward to a larger prime-age labor force with less underemployment and inequality and higher social mobility. But today’s economy is not a post-apocalyptic hellscape that can only be redeemed with trade wars with China and Mexico. It is, more humbly, a work in progress—and one that is actually progressing.

Second-quarter GDP raised to 1.4% from 1.1%
Business investment not nearly as weak as previously reported
Sept 29, 2016
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Business investment in the second quarter was actually a lot better than previously reported and that bodes well for third-quarter growth.
A fresh look at the economy’s performance in the spring shows that gross domestic product grew at a 1.4% annual pace instead of 1.1%, the government said Thursday. That matched the forecast of economists polled by MarketWatch.
The upgrade in GDP — basically a score card for the nation’s economy — largely reflected higher investment by companies than earlier government estimates showed. Investment excluding housing actually rose 1% instead of dropping 0.9%.
Even that number is worse than it looks, revised figures show [ http://www.bea.gov/newsreleases/national/gdp/gdpnewsrelease.htm ]. A 57% plunge in spending by energy companies coping with cheap oil was the main culprit in weak business investment. If mining and drilling are excluded, investment rose a healthy 10% in the second quarter.

Donald Trump’s campaign chairman for police supporters in a key swing state, who was also a pilot for the Republican presidential campaign, has been fired from his job after the Guardian disclosed that he is charged with a violent crime.
Vincent Caldara, a retired police officer and chair of Trump’s Florida law enforcement coalition, will no longer fly vice-presidential nominee Mike Pence to rallies across the US. He is accused of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon [ https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/sep/18/donald-trumps-police-officers-backing-republican-have-murky-legal-histories ].
Caldara, 55, allegedly drove his car at a man repeatedly, knocking the man to the ground, causing him severe physical injuries and leaving him with more than $200,000 of medical bills. Caldara has pleaded not guilty.
He is also accused of seriously injuring a woman by recklessly driving his Harley-Davidson motorcycle into her, in a separate incident. The woman has sued Caldara, but according to court filings, officials have been unable to locate him to serve him with legal papers.
Eastern Air Lines [ http://easternairlines.aero/ ], the Miami-based company that supplies Pence’s campaign plane and pilots, confirmed Caldara’s departure.

Lawsuit: Trump's NC campaign director pointed gun at aide
Aug. 11, 2016
WASHINGTON (AP) — A former paid worker for Donald Trump's presidential bid has accused the campaign's North Carolina state director of pointing a loaded pistol at him.
Vincent Bordini filed a civil lawsuit Wednesday in a North Carolina court against the Trump campaign and recent state director Earl L. Phillip. The lawsuit alleges assault and battery, seeking monetary damages for emotional distress. Bordini, 41, also says Trump's national campaign leadership refused to address the February incident.
Wednesday's lawsuit — first reported by WBTV in Charlotte — says Bordini and Phillip were traveling by car in South Carolina when the campaign director suddenly pulled out a .45-caliber handgun, the safety off and his finger on the trigger, and pressed the barrel to the staffer's kneecap.
Phillip, 48, told The Associated Press Wednesday he had recently resigned as both state campaign director and as deputy chair of Trump's National Diversity Coalition. "I stepped down from ... all affiliations with Donald J. Trump until this is cleared up," said Phillip.

I Wrote That I Despised Hillary Clinton. Today, I Want To Publicly Take It Back.

By Isaac Saul
Editor, A Plus
09/28/2016 Updated September 28, 2016
When this election began, I was like millions of millennial men: a “Bernie bro” rooting hard for Sen. Sanders.
Watching the candidate of my dreams get steam late and lose in the primary wasn’t so different from watching my favorite football team not have enough energy to complete a fourth quarter rally. Hopeful, exciting, but ultimately deflating and disappointing.
When Hillary Clinton became the presumptive Democratic nominee, I was distraught. Months before I had written about her on Huffington Post [ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/isaac-saul/i-despise-hillary-clinton-gender_b_9160682.html ], explaining that I despised her not for her gender - as some of her supporters accused - but for her hawkishness, her center-left policies, her husband’s crime bill that incarcerated so many people of color, her support for the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and her inability to get progressive on climate change policy.
I’ve spent almost every waking hour of every day following this election, reading about Hillary, Donald Trump, both parties’ platforms, and the under-qualified Libertarian and Green Party candidates running. During these months of obsessing over my choice, I’ve watched my position slowly shift. I’ve felt myself start advocating for Hillary more than advocating a vote against Trump, culminating in last night’s debate when she finally, totally, completely won me over.
[...]
Secretary Clinton, I’m sorry. And I retract my previous position of hatred and angst towards you. You have made mistakes, some of them grave, and some of them unforgivable. Unfortunately, that comes with decades of life in the public eye, pressure and microphones in your face. But you have also accomplished far more in your life as a public servant than just about anyone that’s run for this office, and certainly far more than I ever will. When November rolls around, you’ll have my vote.
And you’ll get it enthusiastically.

Vote As If It Matters

Published on Sep 21, 2016 by Mike Malloy

As I said, it calls for abolition of the income tax and the privatization of almost everything the government does, including education. “We would restore authority to parents to determine the education of their children, without interference from government.” And if parents don’t want their children educated, or want them indoctrinated in a cult, or put them to work in a sweatshop instead of learning to read? Not our problem.

What really struck me, however, was what the platform says about the environment. It opposes any kind of regulation; instead, it argues that we can rely on the courts. Is a giant corporation poisoning the air you breathe or the water you drink? Just sue: “Where damages can be proven and quantified in a court of law, restitution to the injured parties must be required.” Ordinary citizens against teams of high-priced corporate lawyers — what could go wrong?

It’s really hard to believe that young voters who supported Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary think any of this is a good idea. But Mr. Johnson and Ms. Stein have received essentially no media scrutiny, so that voters have no idea what they stand for. And their parties’ names sound nice: who among us is against liberty? The truth, that the Libertarian Party essentially stands for a return to all the worst abuses of the Gilded Age, is not out there.

New Book About Hitler Screams Trump In Every Sentence

Published on Sep 29, 2016 by Mike Malloy

Although Donald Trump used to sleep with a copy of Hitler's speeches on his bedside table, I've tried to avoid comparing him to the Nazi dictator.

For whatever he is Trump isn't Hitler, and to suggest he is only insults that murderous maniac's many victims.

But after reading a review of a new book about Hitler's rise to power, I must admit I might have to reconsider that position.

For while the reviewer never mentions Trump's name, Hitler's rise from big mouth buffoon to demagogue does seem chillingly familiar.

The answer that best exemplifies how badly Donald Trump was out of his depth in the debate
September 27, 2016
There are a lot of little nuggets that could be distilled out of the first presidential debate on Monday night as representative of the whole thing. Donald Trump's performance was a fractal: The whole thing was encapsulated in any given answer and any given answer was encapsulated in a single meandering sentence. You can pick out nearly any response and hold it in your hands and say, this, this is why Trump didn't do very well. And you could make that argument effectively.
This is the answer I would pick out, coming after moderator Lester Holt asked Hillary Clinton how to defend against cyber attacks. Clinton responded that it was a serious threat, as evidenced by the Russian hacks of American institutions including the Democratic National Committee.
Then it was Trump's turn. Take this in your hands. Look at it.
"As far as the cyber, I agree to parts of what Secretary Clinton said. We should be better than anybody else, and perhaps we're not. I don't think anybody knows it was Russia that broke into the DNC. She's saying Russia, Russia, Russia, but I don't — maybe it was. I mean, it could be Russia, but it could also be China. It could also be lots of other people. It also could be somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds, okay?
You don't know who broke in to DNC.
But what did we learn with DNC? We learned that Bernie Sanders was taken advantage of by your people, by Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Look what happened to her. But Bernie Sanders was taken advantage of. That's what we learned.
Now, whether that was Russia, whether that was China, whether it was another country, we don't know, because the truth is, under President Obama we've lost control of things that we used to have control over.
We came in with the Internet, we came up with the Internet, and I think Secretary Clinton and myself would agree very much, when you look at what [the Islamic State] is doing with the Internet, they're beating us at our own game. ISIS.
So we have to get very, very tough on cyber and cyber warfare. It is — it is a huge problem. I have a son. He's 10 years old. He has computers. He is so good with these computers, it's unbelievable. The security aspect of cyber is very, very tough. And maybe it's hardly doable.
But I will say, we are not doing the job we should be doing. But that's true throughout our whole governmental society. We have so many things that we have to do better, Lester, and certainly cyber is one of them."
Here is what is contained in that answer.

ABOUT HILLARY CLINTON
Hillary Clinton has served as Secretary of State, Senator from New York, First Lady of the United States, First Lady of Arkansas, a practicing lawyer and law professor, activist, and volunteer, but the first things her friends and family will tell you is that she’s never forgotten where she came from or who she’s been fighting for throughout her life. Hillary was raised in a suburb of Illinois where she attended public school and was raised a Methodist by her parents. She attended Wellesley College, and went on to study law at Yale. After attending Yale Law School, she went to work for the Children’s Defense Fund, going door to door in New Bedford, Massachusetts. After serving as a lawyer for the Congressional Committee investigating President Nixon, she moved to Arkansas where she taught law and ran legal clinics representing poor people. She co-founded Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, one of the state’s first child advocacy groups. As First Lady under President Bill Clinton, Hillary tenaciously led the fight to reform our health care system so that all our families have access to the care they need at affordable prices. Hillary led the U.S. delegation to Beijing to attend the UN Fourth World Conference on Women and gave a groundbreaking speech, declaring that “human rights are women's rights and women's rights are human rights once and for all”—inspiring women worldwide and helping to galvanize a global movement for women’s rights and opportunities. Hillary was then elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first woman senator from New York. She repeatedly worked across the aisle to get things done, including working alongside Republicans after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. When Congress wouldn't do enough for rural areas and small towns, Hillary didn’t back down. She launched innovative partnerships with the tech industry and provided support to local colleges and small businesses. When President Obama asked Hillary to serve as his secretary of state, she answered the call to public service once again. She was a forceful champion for human rights, internet freedom, and rights and opportunities for women and girls, LGBT people and young people all around the globe. Now she’s running for President because everyday Americans need a champion and she wants to be that champion.

Michelle Obama Campaigns For Hillary Clinton in Pittsburgh FULL Speech 9/28/16

Published on Sep 28, 2016 by LesGrossman News

First Lady Michelle Obama campaigned for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton at the University of Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

"This is not on the script... but I love Pittsburgh," Obama told the crowd.

According to the Clinton campaign, Obama was in Pittsburgh to “lay out what is at stake in November and urge Pennsylvanians to support Clinton and (Tim) Kaine and register to vote ahead of the October 11 deadline,”

Obama said when it comes to qualifications for president, "We need someone who will take the job seriously. ... We need a grown up in the White House."

She said the country needs someone who is compassionate, adding that the presidency "doesn't change who you are. It reveals who you are."

Obama touted Clinton's stamina and experience as an attorney, first lady, U.S. senator and Secretary of State.

"We've seen her character and commitment not just during this campaign" but through her entire life, and told the crowd that Clinton "earned sky-high approval ratings" as Secretary of State.

Obama urged young people in the crowd to register to vote.

"The stakes are far to high," she said. "This is the country you will inherit."

Obama attended a Democratic Party event at noon at LaSalle University in Philadelphia before she headed to Pittsburgh. There, she told attendees that Clinton is a tough, compassionate fighter who doesn't back down and who loves her country.

"Experience matters, preparation matters, temperament matters," Obama said. "Hillary Clinton has it all. She's the real deal."

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's campaign reacted to Obama's speech in Philadelphia with a statement saying Clinton is in "panic mode" in Pennsylvania because polls show Trump surging in the battleground state.

Obama also complimented her husband for his progress in creating health reform, slashing unemployment rates and expanding LGBT rights.

This May Be The Most Horrible Thing That Donald Trump Believes

And it just may be the master key to unlocking how he thinks.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump [ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/donald-trump/ ] has offered a litany of racist comments, which it turns out may be rooted in his deeper belief in the inherent superiority of some people ? and not others.

The Frontline documentary “The Choice [ http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/the-choice-2016/ , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7uScWHcTzk (next below; with comments; also at/see {linked in} http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=125457709 and preceding {and any future following})],”
which premiered this week on PBS, reveals that Trump agrees with the dangerous and abusive theory of eugenics [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugenics_in_the_United_States ].

Trump’s father instilled in him the idea that their family’s success was genetic, according to Trump biographer Michael D’Antonio.

“The family subscribes to a racehorse theory of human development,” D’Antonio says in the documentary. “They believe that there are superior people and that if you put together the genes of a superior woman and a superior man, you get a superior offspring.”

The Huffington Post dug back through the archives and found numerous examples of Trump suggesting that intellect and success are purely genetic qualities and that having “the right genes” gave him his “very good brain.”

Video [compilation of Trump statements re genes/genetics; embedded] produced by J.M. Rieger.

‘WE.ARE.SICK.OF.THIS!’: Students respond after racial slurs are shouted at Mizzou

A member of the black student protest group Concerned Student 1950 gestures while addressing a crowd following the announcement that University of Missouri System President Tim Wolfe would resign last November at the university in Columbia, Mo.
September 28, 2016
On Tuesday night, a group of students yelled racial slurs and other insults at a group of black female students at the University of Missouri, where student protests over race last year upended the university administration and sparked demonstrations at campuses nationwide.
The Legion of Black Collegians issued a statement about the incident, which it says was started by a white student who passed a group from their activities committee and shouted, “Look at those [racial slur] looking at us,” and escalating from there.

Trump wanted to fire women who weren't pretty enough, say employees at his California golf club

Donald Trump poses next to the 11th hole at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., in 2005.
Sept. 29, 2016
Donald Trump wanted only the pretty ones, his employees said.
After the Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes opened for play in 2005, its world-famous owner didn’t stop by more than a few times a year to visit the course hugging the coast of the Pacific.
When Trump did visit, the club’s managers went on alert. They scheduled the young, thin, pretty women on staff to work the clubhouse restaurant  — because when Trump saw less-attractive women working at his club, according to court records, he wanted them fired.
"I had witnessed Donald Trump tell managers many times while he was visiting the club that restaurant hostesses were 'not pretty enough' and that they should be fired and replaced with more attractive women,” Hayley Strozier, who was director of catering at the club until 2008, said in a sworn declaration.
Initially, Trump gave this command “almost every time” he visited, Strozier said. Managers eventually changed employee schedules “so that the most attractive women were scheduled to work when Mr. Trump was scheduled to be at the club," she said.
A similar story is told by former Trump employees in court documents filed in 2012 in a broad labor relations lawsuit brought against one of Trump’s development companies in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
The employees’ declarations in support of the lawsuit, which have not been reported in detail until now, show the extent to which they believed Trump, now the Republican presidential nominee, pressured subordinates at one of his businesses to create and enforce a culture of beauty, where female employees’ appearances were prized over their skills.
A Trump Organization attorney, in a statement to The Times, called the allegations “meritless.”

AP: Across US, police officers abuse confidential databases
Sep. 28, 2016
DENVER (AP) — Police officers across the country misuse confidential law enforcement databases to get information on romantic partners, business associates, neighbors, journalists and others for reasons that have nothing to do with daily police work, an Associated Press investigation has found.
Criminal-history and driver databases give officers critical information about people they encounter on the job. But the AP's review shows how those systems also can be exploited by officers who, motivated by romantic quarrels, personal conflicts or voyeuristic curiosity, sidestep policies and sometimes the law by snooping. In the most egregious cases, officers have used information to stalk or harass, or have tampered with or sold records they obtained.
No single agency tracks how often the abuse happens nationwide, and record-keeping inconsistencies make it impossible to know how many violations occur.
But the AP, through records requests to state agencies and big-city police departments, found law enforcement officers and employees who misused databases were fired, suspended or resigned more than 325 times between 2013 and 2015. They received reprimands, counseling or lesser discipline in more than 250 instances, the review found.

Trump stirs old Clinton sex scandals, to the dismay of some allies

Monica Lewinsky and President Bill Clinton are shown in an official White House photo taken on Nov. 17, 1995.
September 29, 2016
Donald Trump and his allies are dredging up the past marital infidelities of Hillary Clinton’s husband — a move of questionable benefit that is bewildering even some of his staunchest supporters.
The Republican nominee and his surrogates, under pressure to boost his standing with female voters and respond to Hillary Clinton’s accusations that he is a misogynist, are turning to an attack that has been tried repeatedly by the Clintons’ foes.
On Thursday, Trump spoke of the Clintons’ “sordid” history and made a reference to Bill Clinton’s impeachment, which stemmed from his affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. A campaign memo circulated the day before urged associates to mention Lewinsky and other women with whom Bill Clinton has been widely reported to have had affairs.

How Donald Trump’s Company Violated the United States Embargo Against Cuba

Donald Trump makes his way past television camera crews after taking questions regarding his presidential bid on the Reform Party ticket in Hartford, Connecticut, on December 1, 1999.
By Kurt Eichenwald
9/29/16
A company controlled by Donald Trump [ http://www.newsweek.com/topic/donald-trump ], the Republican nominee for president, secretly conducted business in Communist Cuba during Fidel Castro’s presidency despite strict American trade bans that made such undertakings illegal, according to interviews with former Trump executives, internal company records and court filings.
Documents show that the Trump company spent a minimum of $68,000 for its 1998 foray into Cuba at a time when the corporate expenditure of even a penny in the Caribbean country was prohibited without U.S. government approval. But the company did not spend the money directly. Instead, with Trump’s knowledge, executives funneled the cash for the Cuba trip through an American consulting firm called Seven Arrows Investment and Development Corp. Once the business consultants traveled to the island and incurred the expenses for the venture, Seven Arrows instructed senior officers with Trump’s company—then called Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts—how to make it appear legal by linking it after the fact to a charitable effort.
The payment by Trump Hotels came just before the New York business mogul launched his first bid for the White House, seeking the nomination of the Reform Party. On his first day of the campaign, he traveled to Miami, where he spoke to a group of Cuban-Americans, a critical voting bloc in the swing state. Trump vowed [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjEqTrHisFY (just below, as embedded; with comments)] to maintain the embargo and never spend his or his companies’ money in Cuba until Fidel Castro was removed from power.

Endorsement: Libertarian Gary Johnson for president

September 29, 2016
Today this newspaper does something it has never done in its 143-year history: endorse someone other than the Republican candidate in a presidential contest.
Since its founding in 1873, The Detroit News has backed a Republican every time it has made a presidential endorsement (three times we have sat on the sidelines — twice during the Franklin Roosevelt elections and in the 2004 Bush/Kerry contest).
We abandon that long and estimable tradition this year for one reason: Donald J. Trump.
The 2016 nominee offered by the Republican Party rubs hard against the editorial board’s values as conservatives and Americans. Donald Trump is unprincipled, unstable and quite possibly dangerous. He can not be president.
His Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, has an impressive resume and a presidential bearing. And although we disagree with her nearly across the board on the issues, we acknowledge she has the temperament to be commander-in-chief and leader of both a diverse nation and the free world.

Don’t vote for Trump: Our view

The Editorial Board has never taken sides in the presidential race. We're doing it now.
September 29, 2016
In the 34-year history of USA TODAY, the Editorial Board has never taken sides in the presidential race. Instead, we’ve expressed opinions about the major issues and haven’t presumed to tell our readers, who have a variety of priorities and values, which choice is best for them. Because every presidential race is different, we revisit our no-endorsement policy every four years. We’ve never seen reason to alter our approach. Until now.
This year, the choice isn’t between two capable major party nominees who happen to have significant ideological differences. This year, one of the candidates - Republican nominee Donald Trump - is, by unanimous consensus of the Editorial Board, unfit for the presidency.
From the day he declared his candidacy 15 months ago through this week’s first presidential debate, Trump has demonstrated repeatedly that he lacks the temperament, knowledge, steadiness and honesty that America needs from its presidents.

Trump Foundation lacks the certification required for charities that solicit money

September 29, 2016
Donald Trump’s charitable foundation — which has been sustained for years by donors outside the Trump family — has never obtained the certification that New York requires before charities can solicit money from the public, according to the state attorney general’s office.
Under the laws in New York, where the Donald J. Trump Foundation is based, any charity that solicits more than $25,000 a year from the public must obtain a special kind of registration beforehand. Charities as large as Trump’s must also submit to a rigorous annual audit that asks — among other things — whether the charity spent any money for the personal benefit of its officers.
If New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D) finds that Trump’s foundation raised money in violation of the law, he could order the charity to stop raising money immediately. With a court’s permission, Schneiderman could also force Trump to return money that his foundation has already raised.
The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment Thursday.
