"Wrong.....it was shorted the past few days to get cheaper shares. Market makers can short anything because that is how they create liquidity on a market. Of you route for a market maker that does not have inventory they have to short to recoup the shares to be delivered. Also the new NSCC rule going into affect is now going to force all market makers that have not delivered the shares back the dtcc to no longer be allowed to borrow aka naked short any more shares until they settle up. In the past they kept the naked share scheme going because they just journaled over their balance to a different account so they could hide it. Finally it appears the dtcc is doing the right thing. If shares get bought back or canceled they will no longer have that inventory to borrow against causing some serious MOASS "
