Shareholders didn't HAVE to "decrease the number of shares" or DO anything at all! A r/s DOES NOT affect the value of your investment. The value of your investment came down simply because people sold in a panic without thinking, a fairly typical reaction.

It's there because shareholders had to decrease the number of shares they were holding bought with the money they earned,
