#4929 RE: Elmer Phud #4926

Elmer, have you seen some of these other SGI Altix designs? The Cambirdge University win is also in the list.

-- SGI received a contract for one of the largest SGI Altix 3000 superclusters to date, powered by 256 processors, as part of an 18-month extension to a six-year supercomputing service contract with the U.K.'s Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council on behalf of a consortium comprising prime contractor Computer Sciences Corporation, SGI and the University of Manchester. This latest upgrade,
a four-node supercluster featuring 64 processors per node, extends the capabilities and compute power of the service available to U.K. academia and commerce and opens new opportunities for scientific development. The council's investment in high-performance computing technology enables such applications as molecular modeling for the pharmaceutical industry and climate prediction and monitoring.

-- The Supercomputing Education Research Centre (SERC), India's leading center for high-performance computing (HPC) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore, has purchased India's first SGI Altix 3000 system, powered by 32 Intel Itanium 2 processors. The SGI system will provide a powerful shared supercomputing resource for SERC researchers, helping to further discoveries in the areas of gene sequencing, gene mapping, computational fluid dynamics and other cutting-edge research projects. Intel will also support IISc with Intel(R) processor-based compilers and tools to enhance the performance of various applications developed by SERC.

-- Dr. Richard Weinberg, chief technologist and a research professor at the USC School of Cinema-Television, recently purchased an SGI Altix server. USC offers undergraduate and graduate programs in animation and digital arts, production, critical studies, screen and television writing, producing, and interactive media. The eight-processor SGI
Altix 3300 server will be used for animation rendering, image processing and digital media production associated with the school's curriculum and research.

-- The Center for Biological Sequence Analysis (CBS), part of the Technical University of Denmark, has invested in one 64-processor SGI Altix 3000 server with 256GB memory. Founded in 1993, CBS conducts basic research in the field of bioinformatics. At CBS, the Altix machine will be used to conduct system biological research within the post-genome era-the era following the completion of Human Genome Project. The human genome sequencing has provided access to the extensive human genome variability that distinguishes us from one another.
