As noted before, Statins may help only 25% of the people that have heart attacks! A small percentage of this group!

Hospital statistics show only %25 had high Lipid counts. You can remained focused on LDL, but there is more to the picture. Perhaps inflammation plays a larger role!

What about the failed niacin and fibrate trials? Why are they still prescribed? Are there lawsuits being filed against these drugs?

Nut: It would be nice if you knew what you're talking
about. AMGN, PFE, SNY, REGN, ISIS, all have non statin
lipid lowering agents that also require Outcomes Trials.
FDA has stated publically that they will be approved
years before the data is available You remind me of a
Nazi Spy who infiltrated the US lines in an old Black
and white.

Re your comments
Statins are most effective at lowering LDL cholesterol ....not very effective at lowering high TG's
For examples ... In 2012 my TG's were still in the low 200's ...and HDL at 30 ....DESPITE max dose Lipitor .
In this situation the high TG / low HDL represents real residual risk NOT addressed by Statin drugs .

Low HDL is very hard to raise ( I've been on almost all the different drugs ) however TG's do respond to changes in life style , diet and omega 3's

Now assuming you have max'd out on Statins and your LDL still runs around 160 ...done as much as you feel you can do in diet etc ......what drug do you prescribe to a patient such as this ? recognizing that the TG/ HDL ratio still presents significant risk ....some DR OZ feel that ratio is the risk .

Re law suits .....not going to happen . Patients are well informed of the risks ...even for Statins ( and I've been on them since late 1985 )

Risk / reward analysis favors approval of Vascepa for those at risk ...diabetics , those on dialysis , those with high TG /low HDL despite Statin therapy .....with a warning label saying " not yet proven to reduce CVE ...outcome trial underway
